Have the Rams gotten better or worse? — Scott P.
Much better without having to go all out with trades and big money deals like they have the last couple of years. They lost Ndamukong Suh, but I would take what Eric Weddle and Clay Matthews bring to that field and locker room over what Suh brought 24/7/365. Not close.
How does a head coach manage the egos when a former long-term starter, say Blake Bortles or Ryan Tannehill, signs a deal with a new team as a backup? Does it make the current starter feel like they are really on a shorter leash? — Jesse G.
No, these aren’t designed to make the starter feel that they are on a shorter leash. They are certainly not there to provide pressure. When picking up guys like Bortles or Tannehill, the thinking from the coach is, “Hey, in OUR system, he will flourish and in case our quarterback goes down, we have someone who we think can manage it.” You’re going to sign someone like this hoping that if something bad happens to your starter, it’ll work out with your backup like it did with Nick Foles and the Philadelphia Eagles. Foles wasn’t there to provide pressure in case Carson Wentz didn’t work out.
