Joe Barksdale poised to hit free-agent market
March, 6, 2015

http://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-rams/
EARTH CITY, Mo. — On Saturday, NFL teams can begin engaging agents of potential unrestricted free agents as the “legal tampering” window opens in advance of the new league year on March 10.
With that negotiating window about to open, it stands to reason that deals for pending free agents to stay with their current team, guys like St. Louis Rams offensive tackle Joe Barksdale, will go on the back burner.
Joe Barksdale’s price tag could increase with a low number of high-quality tackles set to hit free agency.”A lot of times people, players, once they get through, get close, it’s good to test the market,” Rams general manager Les Snead said. “And it’s not the worst thing for the team, either, because at the end of the day, now no one is guessing. Here’s the options and I think it makes the club, the player, especially, because he now knows reality versus make believe and it helps the agent make the best decision.”
For the Rams, Barksdale is the player that might be the key domino to determine how the rest of their offseason plays out. They’d like to keep him at his usual right tackle spot and as of the end of the season, he made it clear he would like to return.
But making that happen won’t be easy. The two sides have discussed a deal but it seems as though the Rams are only willing to pay so much and Barksdale’s price could potentially exceed that.
“With Joe, because he was a starter, we’ve had some pretty serious dialogue with those guys,” Snead said. “I think we’ve got a nice plan that both of us feel like is the best way to execute going forward and we’ll see where it goes from there.”
Estimates for Barksdale’s possible price tag have been all over the map. This year’s free-agent class could also play in Barksdale’s favor as quality tackles are hard to find. Save for Green Bay’s Bryan Bulaga, Barksdale is probably the next best tackle poised to hit the market.
In surveying various NFL resources at last month’s NFL scouting combine, the numbers ran the gamut from similar to Indianapolis’ Gosder Cherilus’ $6.9 million annual salary to a more reasonable comparison of the Jets’ Breno Giacomini’s $4.5 million average salary. The truth, as it often does, could be somewhere in the middle, perhaps closer to the $6 million average pay for guys like Oakland’s Austin Howard or Tampa Bay’s Anthony Collins.
Simply put, the going rate for solid, durable tackles is probably higher than most teams would like to pay but such players have become increasingly difficult to find. And while the Rams would like to bring Barksdale back, there are those in his camp that express surprise that a deal didn’t get done before now.
Given how far Barksdale has come in a little less than three seasons with the Rams, it’s understandable why he’d feel a sense of loyalty. The Rams claimed Barksdale off waivers from Oakland in 2012, and offensive line coach Paul Boudreau quickly set about turning him into a productive player. Barksdale took over the starting job at right tackle after an injury to Rodger Saffold early in the 2013 season and never relinquished the job.
Over the past two seasons, Barksdale played in all 32 games, most of them starts. The standard evaluation of his performance has been that he was better in 2013 than 2014, but Barksdale says he was told otherwise by the coaching staff.
“I’m not the person to ask because I’m really hard on myself,” Barksdale said. “But the coaches say it’s been really, really good. Better than last year. Obviously I’m a young guy and I’ve still got a lot of room to grow.”
There are things outside of Barksdale’s control that could also help with that growth. Adding some stability at right guard, for example, would figure to help Barksdale reach his potential. He might have been at his best late in the 2013 season when Saffold played next to him.
But Barksdale has much to consider as the free-agent market opens. He’s in the midst of planning an upcoming wedding and this could be his best chance to cash in. In addition to his agent and fiance, Barksdale will also consult mentor and Rams legend Jackie Slater during the process.
So, if the market develops as one might expect — teams like Carolina and the New York Giants have been connected to Barksdale — he could face a difficult decision between staying in the place that gave him his chance and landing a more lucrative offer, not that one could begrudge him either way.
“That’s a good question,” Barksdale said. “I don’t know. You talk to your agent and fiancé and things like that because at the end of the day, a guy like me is about to have a family, so I’m going to have to do what’s best for them. But the fact still remains that I’d love to be back.”

March 6, 2015 at 8:48 pm #19581canadaramParticipantIt’s ok. It’s the FO’s new strategy. The Rams will wait for him to agree to terms with another team, and then the that team will get cold feet and make up an excuse about Barksdale’s health and back out of the deal. Barksdale will then return to the Rams. That’s how these things always go.

Joe Barksdale, the Rams’ starting right tackle for the past two seasons, has one foot out the door. Barksdale has decided to test the market Tuesday, the first day of the free agency period, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
The sides are simply too far apart in terms of what the Rams are offering and what the expectations are in the Barksdale camp. Of course, the Rams have more than three days to come up with something that might change Barksdale’s mind, but that appears unlikely.
In addition, outside teams can contact and negotiate with Barksdale starting Saturday as the three-day “legal tampering” window opens. Barksdale had a couple of tough games last season, but losing him would be a blow for the Rams, who already have needs at guard and possibly center on the offensive line.
Barksdale is coming free at a time when there’s a very thin crop at offensive tackle. Green Bay’s Bryan Bulaga is generally considered the best tackle in this year’s free-agent class. Denver’s Orlando Franklin would be No. 2, although he switched to left guard in 2014 after being the Broncos’ starting right tackle for three seasons.
When it comes to possibly replacing Barksdale, the options are limited on the current Rams roster. Jake Long, recovering from a second knee injury in the span of 10 months, could move to right tackle. But it’s not even certain he’ll be on the roster much longer because of a contract clause that guarantees $4 million in base salary if he’s on the roster the fifth day of the league year (March 14).
The current roster also includes offensive tackle Steven Baker, who was on the Rams’ practice squad for the last nine games of the 2014 season. Rodger Saffold has played right tackle in the past, but the coaching staff feels his best position is guard, followed by left tackle.
In other developments, the Rams have sent out one-year tender offers to three of their four restricted free agents.
Quarterback Austin Davis and fullback and tight end Cory Harkey were tendered at the minimum level of $1.5 million. Safety Rodney McLeod was tendered at a second-round level of $2.4 million.
Restricted free agents are players with three years experience and with expiring contracts. Because Davis and Harkey were undrafted players, the Rams would get matching rights if either player got outside offers, but no draft pick compensation if they chose not to match any offer.
They would get a second-round draft pick as compensation on McLeod if they chose not to match an outside offer on him.
The Rams did not make a qualifying offer to restricted free agent Tim Barnes, a center and guard from the University of Missouri. The Rams may try to re-sign him for a lower rate once the free agency period begins.
Also, special teams core player Chase Reynolds and offensive lineman Brandon Washington received one-year tenders offers as exclusive rights free agents (players with less than three years experience).

Posted: Sat Mar. 7, 2015The Dallas Cowboys have signed right tackle Doug Free to a three-year contract, Cowboys COO Stephen Jones confirmed to Mike Fisher of Cowboys HQ.
Todd Archer of ESPN first reported that the sides had reached a three-year deal worth $15 million. Archer reports that $6 million of the contract is guaranteed.
Free missed five games in 2014 with a foot injury, but from 2009-2013, played in all of Dallas’ 16 regular season games.
• The 2015 free agents ranked 1-50 | 50-100
With Free off the market, the entire Cowboys’ offensive line from the 2014 season – Free, Tyron Smith, Ronald Leary, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin – will remain intact.
Dallas drafted Free in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL draft.
That puts Joe Barksdale in line for my old estimate of 4 yr(s) / $16,750,000. I think we should sign him if that is true.
March 7, 2015 at 1:51 pm #19607AgamemnonParticipant60. Doug Free
60-doug-free-atOT, Dallas (Age 31)Undisputed veteran leader of standout offensive line in Dallas. Has increasingly battled injuries (he missed five games last season) after being durable for four straight years. Best fit: Cowboys. They know what they have in the room, and Free has been amenable to taking less money to stay in previous years.
75. Lance Kendricks
75-lance-kendricks-dekTE, St. Louis (Age 27)Not much of a blocker, but at 6-3 and 250 pounds with some speed, Kendricks is a good athlete for the position. Best fit: Browns. Doesn’t look like Cleveland will bring Jordan Cameron back. Kendricks would be a low-cost player to give the team options.
88. Joe Barksdale
88-joe-barksdale-mtgiOT, St. Louis (Age 26)Decent run blocker who struggles at times in pass protection, Barksdale is a good stop-gap measure for a team looking to give a young player more time. Best fit: Panthers. They can use all the help they can get on the offensive line.
98. Kenny Britt
98-kenny-britt-dekWR, St. Louis (Age 26)After being a disaster on and off the field his final three seasons in Tennessee, Britt seemed to get things going with Rams with a 48-catch, 748-yard season without a quarterback. Best fit: Rams. Britt should sign short term to continue the positive vibes where he is.

Cowboys bring back Doug Free
Updated: March 7, 2015
By Todd Archer | ESPN.comhttp://espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/story/_/id/12438166/doug-free-dallas-cowboys-agree-3-year-deal
IRVING, Texas — With free agency set to begin Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys made their choice at right tackle by re-signing Doug Free to a three-year deal.
The deal is worth $15 million and includes $6 million in guaranteed money, according to a source.
The Cowboys don’t know if they will be able to keep free-agent running back DeMarco Murray, but they have kept one of the best offensive lines in football intact with Tyron Smith, Ronald Leary, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin and Free set to be together for a second season.
With Free returning, Jermey Parnell, who started five regular-season games and two playoff contests because of foot and ankle injuries to Free, will hit the free-agent market and likely find a starting deal elsewhere.
Free, 31, has been a full-time starter since 2010. He started at left tackle at 2010 and 2011 before moving to right tackle in favor of Smith in 2012.
He took a pay cut in 2013, dropping his base salary to $3.5 million in each of the last two years after signing a four-year, $32 million deal that included $17 million guaranteed.
Free is considered the leader of a Cowboys offensive line that features three Pro Bowlers — Smith, Frederick and Martin. He had offseason surgery on his left ankle but he is expected to be at full health for training camp.
March 7, 2015 at 3:32 pm #19615AgamemnonParticipantIf Barksdale can ask for anything over 4 million and get it, good for him. 😉 and then Demoff didn’t screw up.

For me, I would not go over $6 million a year for him. I also want Saffold to move back to RG as well.

If you read the thread, he wants 6 M apparently and the Rams don’t want to make it that much.

I know.
But then no one can know 32 teams the way we know the Rams.

Yeah, man, I know what you mean.
But then, we’re not offering information on Raiders and Falcons out there on the web as if we are experts.
I guess I figure that, if you set up as an expert offering information claiming credibility, you ought to know what you’re talking about. Or, at least, know the LIMITS of what you know.

All true. I hear you. Thank goodness for message boards.
March 7, 2015 at 7:56 pm #19629InvaderRamModeratori’d rather the rams not sign britt or barksdale and go after randall cobb. then draft offensive line.

I wrote it wrong. I meant if someone would offer Barksdale more than $6 million, and he would want us to match that to stay, then let him go. I think the Rams should sign him back for $6 million. I do not want to have anther rookie at OT. Robinson is still basically a rookie as he did not start if correct, week 9? My mind is not the best ya know. I’m all for depth on the OLine though
