The Winston QB issue
==================
XXXIVWinTo put it in Rams terms: Is Jameis Winston like Lawrence Phillips– so stupid, immature, and self-destructive that he’ll sabotage his own career? Or is he Kenny Britt– a guy with a LONG rapsheet of troubles with the law and immature behavior– but shocks everybody and becomes not only a solid pro but a LEADER on the team?
I was totally wrong about Kenny Britt– the guy had NINE run-ins with the law since he turned pro, and after Britt posted his sex video during this preseason, I thought that was a sure sign that he was going to keep doing stupid things which would interfere with his career. I still find it amazing that Britt has turned it around enough to be a “mentor” for the young guys.
But Jameis Winston has such a long history of doing stupid, stupid, stupid things. (As well as the much more serious rape allegation).
There are so MANY things for Jameis– stealing the crab legs, walking around campus with BB guns (was handcuffed by police for this), stealing soda at Burger King, dressing for a game he was suspended for (and being told by his coach to go back in the lockerroom), the allegations of point shaving and autographs, standing up on a desk and yelling profanities about sex (When he was still under investigation for rape), being kicked out of practice and having his coach tell him “It’s not all about you”….
In terms of judging his fitness for the pros, the “worst” one for me is the way he shoved the referee in the Boston College game. To me, it just showed he has NO respect– for anybody. Here’s a link to Mike Pereira explaining why Jameis should have been ejected immediately (just another in the long line of things Jameis has gotten away with)
And here’s a link to the New York Times article about how the investigation into the rape charges was completely mishandled:
Maybe I’m getting older, but I’d like to have guys on the team I can root for– not sure I could ever root for Jameis Winston. Personally, I hope that if he “falls” to the Rams due to character concerns– I would hope that Snisher let Winston keep falling right past them.

That, unfortunately, is not a link to the article mentioned, it’s just a link to the front page of the Times. As a rule, links on herd board posts don’t work here. You have to go get the link on a case by case basis yourself.
Nevertheless, I know a bit about that story. It’s actually part of a national issue. Campuses all across the country have gotten worse and worse at handling rape and sexual assault charges, not just with football players.
I thought this issue was deserving of its own thread btw so voila.

Why would campuses be getting worse?
Schools seem to be doing better
on bullying, i thot.w
vDecember 19, 2014 at 12:28 pm #14221joemadParticipantyou need a special guy to be QB in the NFL, not only in talent, but a guy that will put in the work to study, game plan to succeed.
Brady, Rodgers, Luck, Russell Wilson, Flacco, etc…..guys that have established great study and work habits to prep well to pick up the complexities of the game.
Very few can rely on raw talent, maybe Brett Farve, but to be great, you need talent and the will to have a strong smart work ethic.
Do you think this Winston kid has these habits established?

vSome grade schools and high schools were doing well on bullying for a while, but I think that backslid.
Either way, universities and colleges have infamously backslid on sexual assault. A simple search would reveal this. It’s national level concern.

One of the things i started noticing about five or ten years ago or so,
was that the tv-celebrity-experts started talking a lot about
potential QB-draft-choices being “the face of the franchise” —
meaning that the QB had to represent the corporate ‘brand’
in a certain way. I’m not saying thats good or bad,
just saying there was a change at some point in the NFL.
I doubt tv-celebrity-experts were saying things like
“Billy Kilmer needs to be the face of the franchise”.w
vDecember 19, 2014 at 1:59 pm #14233MackeyserModeratorWell, you can thank the David Stern marketing assholes of the NBA who took them from a team game “Lakers versus Celtics” to a Magic versus Bird game… and totally destroyed it by pushing players to want the old “one on one ISO”…
Makes me sick just thinking about it…
Football can’t function that way, inherently, but they sure want to market it that way.
And contracts have started to get paid that way. They pay the QB dozens of times more than the OL in some cases and then wonder why the QB can’t perform. Well, fucking duh. It’s a team game and all bumper sticker sloganeering about “elevating those around you” aside, it just doesn’t work that way… no matter how much some asshole in marketing would like it to.
<insert obligatory Bill Hicks “if you’re in marketing” reference here>
So, yeah, we’ve seen that change because the QB has the ball on every snap. He’s the focal point on the offense. He’s the sports analogue for the “one who runs things, makes things go, is at the hub of an organization’s success” etc. Thus, the actual Quarterback for an actual NFL franchise when he does perform becomes both a literal and figurative symbol of a whole lot of things… thanks to that damn marketing machine…
Could Winston = Britt? I dunno. THAT thought never occurred to me. I tend to believe that rapists of any kind have a very high recidivism rate (as every study ever has shown) and so if he did what he’s alleged to have done, then he’s simply another encounter from being the next Darren Sharper. No one needs that.
If he didn’t do it, then he does have the potential to be special. He’s got so much growing up to do… I dunno even if he’s cleared that I’d want to deal with that.
If folks thought Michael Sam “could” be a distraction… well, Winston WILL be a distraction because every last blink will be scrutinized.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.

wvI think it changed when QBs stopped wearing the single bar face-mask…. (just kidding)
good GMs / coaches or great franchises won’t buy or fall for the hype.
Look an Manziel. that guy was dropping like a rock in the draft, then he calls the Browns and begs to be picked, and they did….. That’s why the Browns sucked for so long, their GM, Owner or whoever picked him based on a phone call. I don’t think the Pats or perennial winner would do that.
I blame Melvin K.
While general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, Tobin gained some notoriety during the television broadcast of the 1994 NFL Draft after being criticized by ESPN analyst Mel Kiper for picking Nebraska linebacker Trev Alberts with the fifth pick in the draft, instead of Fresno State quarterback Trent Dilfer.
While being interviewed by ESPN later in the broadcast, Tobin famously said “Who the hell is Mel Kiper?!”[1] Tobin later called a press conference where he ranted about Kiper for several minutes, stating that Kiper had been biased against the Colts ever since they moved from Baltimore, Kiper’s home

He is accused of sexual assault and stood on a table in public yelling obscenities about women.
He may not be a physical abuser the way Phillips was but there are many different kinds of fukkked up misogynists out there.
There is no excusing Winston.
December 22, 2014 at 4:04 pm #14492AgamemnonParticipantDecember 22, 2014 at 11:25 pm #14541ZooeyModeratorI doubt he’s around when the Rams pick anyway.
But I wouldn’t take him.
A quarterback HAS to have his mental game together. Self-discipline is extremely important.
Maybe if he’s still around in the 4th round – depending on who else is available….
December 23, 2014 at 1:40 pm #14580DakParticipantI wouldn’t draft Jameis Winston at all. With him comes more chances for trouble than success.
