Los Angeles Rams acquire RB Sony Michel from New England Patriots
    By Lindsey Thiry

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Los Angeles Rams have acquired Sony Michel from the New England Patriots to add some much-needed depth at the running back position.

New England received two conditional draft picks — one in the fifth round and another in the sixth — in the deal, which was announced Wednesday morning by the Rams.

Michel fills an immediate need for the Rams, who will play the season without rising star Cam Akers after he tore his right Achilles tendon while working out before training camp.

In Akers’ absence, Darrell Henderson Jr. has taken over as starter, but the Rams lack depth behind the third-year pro.

Second-year pro Xavier Jones, an undrafted free agent in 2020, and rookie seventh-round pick Jake Funk have competed throughout the preseason with the hope of proving they could fill the position.

At the outset of training camp, coach Sean McVay said the Rams would give their young backs ample opportunity to compete for the job but left open the possibility that the team could look for outside help when the season opener approached.

Asked this week whether Jones and Funk had proved through two preseason games that they could be ready for Week 1 against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 12, McVay said the Rams were in the process of figuring that out.

“We got a little bit of time,” McVay said. “Darrell is a guy that’s been established and done some good things. But I was pleased with both those guys.”

Henderson suffered a mild thumb sprain in practice Monday but returned to practice Tuesday with a cast or brace protecting his left hand.

A fourth-year pro, Michel has rushed for 2,292 yards and 14 touchdowns in 28 starts for the Patriots, who drafted him in the first round with the 31st pick in 2018.

In a 13-3 victory over the Rams in Super Bowl LIII, Michel rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

Michel is due to earn a base salary of $1.79 million in the final year of his contract in 2021 after the Patriots previously elected not to exercise his fifth-year option for 2022. He had drawn rave reviews from Patriots running back coach Ivan Fears this preseason, with Fears saying he had “upped his total game.”

“I’ve always liked him as a runner, but now he’s shown to us that he can also play in the passing game and be very effective,” Fears said. “He’s had an awfully good camp.”

Last season, Michel missed six games when he was placed on injured reserve after Week 3 because of a quadriceps injury. In nine games he rushed for 449 yards and a touchdown on 79 carries. In a 24-3 loss to the Rams, Michel rushed for 22 yards on seven carries.

The Patriots have gone through training camp with a surplus of six running backs, including third-year pro Damien Harris, who took over the starting job from Michel last season, and veteran James White.

The Patriots’ surplus at running back has been a hot topic at camp, with Harris, Michel, White, fourth-round pick Rhamondre Stevenson, sparkplug J.J. Taylor and veteran core special teamer Brandon Bolden on the depth chart, and the likelihood that the team would keep a maximum of five players at the position.

Last week, coach Bill Belichick said, “They have all gotten opportunities and shown positively. Competition brings out the best in all of us. It’s a great situation.”

ESPN’s Mike Reiss contributed to this report.

Well that’s a relief. Clearly the Rams had to do something at RB.

When looking at his stats I noticed that he was not often used as a receiver out of he backfield during his time in NE, even during his two healthy seasons. Is that a function of the Patriots offense or is it a weakness is Michel’s game?

He seems to be a good RB, not quite Todd Gurley. I don’t know about his receiving. Sony has been hurt some. The Rams paid a bit of a premium, but it wasn’t a lot. imo He doesn’t hurt the Salary Cap.

Akers out, DH gets dinged up. Rams RB coach coached Michel in college so they know each other. Everything adds up the right way with him.

I think Funk will be good but he’s a rookie with an injury history. I don’t know as much about Jones but he does look like he can contribute…could be a role player, like a 3rd down back.

I think they can have a strong rotation at back.

Akers would have been great. He is the most gifted back out of the guys named. But I think without Akers they can still have a solid running game. Which is important because as we know, Stafford basically has never had that.

    Nothing to not like here.

They didn’t have much of a choice, given all of the injuries. But I would have preferred a running back pickup without trading away draft picks. Unless I’m mistaken, Michel is a rental for just this season, so a potential 4th is a lot to give up.

I wonder. Did the concept of draft picks itself steal McSnead’s girlfriends, or kick their dogs? They seem to hate the very idea.

    ;>)

That said, Michel should help them a lot this year.

I for one, think this is great.
Glad a quality player became available.

He will have a role to play,
    for good, or evil, before
    this is over.

i don’t know much about football, but on one of the vids kellerman mentioned the rams running the shanahan running game. now that’s one thing i forgot about. that this running game will make running backs look good.

i don’t know how well michel’s skill set will mesh with the system. or how different the rams’ system is from the patriots’. but michel is still young. he’s no todd gurley but could he be at least as talented as akers? i don’t know. but he was a first rounder. his agility numbers are solid. this could really work out for the rams i think.

Why the Rams could have a perfect fit in running back Sony Michel

Why the Rams could have a perfect fit in running back Sony Michel

The Rams were headed into the 2021 NFL season with an unclear picture at running back. Cam Akers suffered a torn Achilles tendon in July that ended his season before it began. This foiled Sean McVay’s plan for using Akers as his “Mr. Everything” at the position. 2020 backup Darrell Henderson, more of a satellite back, has been dealing with a sprained thumb, though it’s estimated that he’ll be ready for the regular-season opener against the Bears. Jake Funk and Xavier Jones were among the team’s primary backs in their Week 2 preseason game against the Raiders last Saturday, and the Rams ran for 129 yards on 27 carries in that game, but McVay was looking for more to reinforce a depleted group.

On Wednesday, the Rams made a deal with the Patriots for the services of running back Sony Michel, the 2018 first-round pick who gained just 449 rushing yards and scored one rushing touchdown on 79 carries in 2020. Michel’s numbers had dropped precipitously in 2020 in part due to a quadriceps injury, and it was a fall from grace after a rookie season in which he scored six rushing touchdowns in the postseason, and helped New England beat McVay’s Rams in Super Bowl LIII. The Rams gave up a fifth-round and sixth-round pick in 2022, which turns into a fourth-round pick if the Rams get a fourth-round compensatory pick. So, a fourth-round pick for the former first-round pick.

Michel had lost the starting job to Damien Harris last season, and with the sascent of fourth-round rookie Rhamondre Stevenson, the Patriots were flush with running backs, and Michel had fallen out of favor. That doesn’t mean that the Rams made a mistake here — they just have to know how Michel is best utilized.

Interestingly enough, though Michel ran behind more gap and pull schemes in 2020, he was more effective when running zone. That fits in with at least the 2020 version of the Rams, who, per Sports Info Solutions, had the second-most zone rushing attempts in the NFL last season with 336 for 1.425 yards, 620 yards after contact, and 16 touchdowns. Only the Titans had more zone running attempts with 384 for 1,840 yards, 1,157 yards after contact, and 16 touchdowns, and they had Derrick Henry as opposed to Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson, and Malcolm Brown. In zone and split zone last season, Michel had 45 carries for 263 yards, 161 yards after contact, and his only rushing touchdown — in Week 1 against the Dolphins.

Michel’s best 2020 run came on this 38-yard scamper against the Raiders in Week 3, where he showed excellent ability to move to open space, second-level agility, and third-level ball security. If Michel can pull off a handful of these runs in 2021, McVay will be perfectly happy with the draft capital given up (not that the Rams give a single expletive about draft capital anyway).

McVay likes to use his backs in the passing game, and though Michel caught just 26 passes for 258 yards and a touchdown during his three seasons with the Patriots, he is capable of more. In his finale with the Patriots, against the Jets in Week 17 last season, he picked up three catches for 60 yards. Michel can handle wheel routes and screens and little leaks all day.

Since the Patriots declined Michel’s fifth-year option, he’s on the books for the Rams in 2021 with a cap charge of $3,063,039. This makes Michel the cap-heaviest back on a Rams roster that wants to define the position inexpensively. Not that Michel will be able to regain the glory of his rookie season right off the bat, but he does add much-needed every-down attributes if he’s healthy and near 100%. If not… well, it’s a lowball trade for a guy who won’t be on the books next season. Schematically, it seems like a good enough fit to give Sony Michel another chance at the brass ring.

No Michel is not as talented as Akers, and that’s not being negative about Michel, who”s good. Michel is essentially a better version of Brown. But Akers has the vision and lateral quickness to be elusive in traffic. Not like Faulk but it’s still impressive. None of the other Rams backs, including Michel, have this. Akers after all constantly made something out of nothing in college behind what was widely known to be one of the worst OLs in college football.

The guys the Rams will be using this year will be fine, they have a solid running game IMO. But Akers is a cut above.

and i’m not saying he is. i really don’t have an opinion one way or the other. but i do think he’s one of the more talented rbs to come to the rams in the past 3 years. definitely top 2 since gurley left.
