znModeratorfrom What to watch for in Saturday’s NFL preseason games
Los Angeles Rams at Oakland Raiders (8 p.m., Saturday)
Rams: The running back situation
With the Rams’ plan to limit Todd Gurley’s workload this year combined with it being the preseason opener, we aren’t going to see standout back on the field. However just how Malcolm Brown plays coming off an injury and how rookie Darrell Henderson fares in his debut will be of particular interest for Rams fans and fantasy enthusiasts, alike.
Raiders: First-round debuts
Anytime a first-round pick gets his first live action, it’s something to look forward to. With the Raiders, there will be three such interests and their debuts come three days after many got to know them a bit better on HBO’s Hard Knocks. Defensive end Clelin Ferrell will offer a glimpse at a pass rush that needs to improve, running back Josh Jacobs can change things up for the Raiders’ offense and safety Johnathan Abram will get the opportunity to go full-speed and hit the opposition after being told to hold back against teammates.

Blake Bortles ready for his preseason opportunity
Jared Goff won’t play in the Rams’ preseason opener Saturday. Blake Bortles will.
Bortles has two more years and 35 more starts than Goff, but Goff is the starting quarterback and Bortles now is his backup. If things go as planned for the Rams this season, the only action Bortles will see is in the preseason.
He will try to make the most of it.
“It’s an opportunity for me to get a new resumé on tape,” Bortles said, via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times.
Bortles signed a one-year contract with the Rams after the Jaguars gave up on the former No. 3 overall choice. It gives him a chance to learn under Sean McVay before hitting the free agent market in March in search of a starting job.
Bortles called it “an unbelievable system.”
“He’s really been impressive when you look at a guy that’s had a lot of success as a starter in some different systems, how quickly he’s been able to come in here, digest the material, be able to own it and then be able to help get guys on the same page with some of the younger guys he’s playing with,” McVay said.

Keep an eye on #14 Webster, WR. Kid is fast, good hands and cuts on a dime.
The other one that looked really good in camp is #9 Wolford, QB. It will be hard to make the final 53 but look for him on the practice squad where I have a feeling he won’t last long with the Eagles losing their back up.

Most starters will sit Saturday against the Raiders
Don’t expect to see any of the Rams’ established starters when they open their preseason schedule against the Raiders on Saturday in Oakland. But that doesn’t mean all the starters will get the night off.
The Rams will decide some time over the next day or so the plan with new starting offensive linemen Brian Allen and Joe Noteboom, who are taking over at center and left guard, respectively.
The hope was that Noteboom and Allen would get enough quality work against the Raiders and Chargers during the four joint practices, but with so much riding on their successful transition as starters this year, they still might see some playing time on Saturday.
“That’s something that we’ve talked about earlier in the week. I’m going to get with (offensive line coach Aaron) Kromer (to decide),” McVay said. “We’re going to assess this tape. We’re going to see what kind of work they’ve gotten in. That’s something that we have not decided on. If they do, it’ll just be a couple series.”
On the other side of the line of scrimmage, inside linebacker Micah Kiser, who is battling veteran Bryce Hager for the starting job, and Sebastian Joseph-Day, who is on track to start at nose tackle, will get a look in Oakland as they prepare to be starters in their second seasons.
“Those guys are going to play right now,” McVay said. “They’ll play a couple series. Micah will play a quarter (and) we’ll get Bryce in there as well. Those are the guys that really — you kind of just mentioned — those guys that we’re potentially projecting as starters that haven’t had the experience that a lot of our other players do have. Those guys are going to be conversations. The defensive players you mentioned, we expect those guys to play and then we’re going to talk about (Noteboom) and Brian.”

znModeratorGuys I will be watching.
Rapp, though, as Farr said in a “mailbag,” they will not be using him this summer the way they will be in the season.
Will Fowler play? If not then is there anything to look for with Ebukam or Obo?
Kiser is a must watch.
The NTs? Gaines and Joseph-Day.
NB and Allen if they play.
Everett? If he plays.
Brown, Henderson, Kelly. This one is obvious.
Bortles. They also might have a 3rd guy in Wolford. I hope they have a 3rd guy in Wolford because Bortles is a 1-year, and it would be nice to have a #2 next year who knows the system.
A big one for me–Thomas. I like Thomas as a WR, I think he is natural depth behind Cooks, and he’s a great special teamer. They say he has been lighting up camp so we’ll see.

probably obvious but further evidence of this: Rams HC Sean McVay on the CBS2 pregame show told sideline reporter Jaime Maggio the team treated the joint practices against the Raiders and Chargers as the preseason for the 1s on O/D given their involvement.Gary Klein@LATimesklein
Brian Allen not out with centers for pregame snaps to QBs. Looks like Allen and Noteboom might be held out. Also Justin Davis in sweats.Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
Interested to see if Mike Thomas momentum from a strong camp will carry over to games.Looks like Aaron Neary, Jamil Demby and Vitas Hrynkiewicz will be the #Rams centers tonight, which means Brian Allen – and I suspect Joe Noteboom – did enough in joint practices to create comfort they don’t need to play
Talking to some #Rams people, a lot of eyes are going to be on those young offensive linemen tonight – more the ones vying for backup spots. Rams really need to build some depth on the OL
