znModeratorSo Ram (regular camp reporter in previous years)
The Offense Line is Where it is at. I mean every season it seems to be. McVays first season I wrote one of my one & only post back then. That training camp I had a Great Experience. Got into The Chargers vs Rams at the Stadium. Parked at LA Dominguez parking lot free. Walked around parking lot & found a few tailgaters & got an eTicket. Watching from as close as I could get with a couple Beers at the 50. Almost eye level with Snead on the field if I were to sit down. What I did see there was the bonding of The Big 5. It was SUPER COOL. The leadership Whitworth took along with John Sullivan was priceless to The Rams organization.
Was cool to see Saffold bond with Sullivan & Whitworth. Jared Goff has always been in connection with them. He will come of the field talk to them, and then move on. He has shown great leadership. Saffold was down on himself & Brown & Big Rob Hav sort of we’re finding themselves.
Last season Whitworth was working with Noteboom. They both would pack a punch. That’s why Noteboom would make a good LT. He is able to keep DL man a-bay. Learning from one of the best. Sullivan doing the same with Allen.
Big Rob when injured his first season at UCI showed leadership. He kept in tune. He has sort of meshed in well. Blythe of all players seems to go unnoticed. Which in away is a good thing. Shows he is solid. I thought Noteboom was going to get the starting RG position, but Blythe earned it. Noteboom being the back up LT.
Really curious about how the group stacks up this season. I expect Big Rob to be a bigger part of the leadership. Then again Allen is the Man in the Middle. Whitworth will be passing the torch after this season.
Gurley the last 2 seasons stays after practice to work on his pass catching & route running. He has lead by example by always running hard. It will be interesting how he monitors his reps ?? I also wonder how the RB position plays out. There has never been much real competition & depth sort of speak.
Brockers has always been the leader of the DL. Of course Aaron Donald has not been to training camp for 2 years. Then when he was it was Quinn & Brokers. The 2nd year it was Brockers & Ogletree . Fox & Westbrooks were a big part of the DL back then. Last season it was Brockers & Suh that we’re the veterans. I wonder what this year will bring. I like to see the bonding of players & get a vibe for the players interactions.

Was at camp both Gurley and Kupp looked sharp. Kupp still appears to be Goff’s security blanket. Made some great catches.
Goff still needs to improve on taking the check down he still waits for the deep ball to open up too much this was evident on a pick he threw to talib in the endzone.
==
Karate61
So Gaines…I don’t know. He looks short, stocky, and slow today.
Gurley. You wouldn’t know anything was wrong just watching him.
Brockers looks scary large in person.
Bortles was super fan friendly, and he looks a lot taller in stature in person. Him and Goff looked sharp today. Gotta be the best #1,#2 quarterback duo of any team this year.
Daryl Henderson. My god he is short. Tiny. But looked lightening fast during special teams drills. I bet he returns either kickoffs or punts, or both.
Donald…he looked playoff ready…already. Lightning fast hand speed on some edge rushing bag drills.
Our new guy Rapp looks fast.
Kupp = full speed. He was running routes in warm ups in the end zone real close to us fans, digging hard into the turf as he made cuts. A lot of strain on the knees with those cuts. So, he seemed 100% from what I saw. He looked big, and in great shape overall too.

So, it was packed, most people ever at camp i would imagine. Not too hot, little bit of breeze, really not too bad considering how hot it was in most of L.A.
Gurley, didn’t look great to me but looked good. He seemed stiff, less effortless, less smooth a lot of the time, didn’t take a ton of reps but on one play, a little dump off from Goff in 11 on 11, he looked great, just like you’d expect Todd Gurley to look, quick, fast, effortless, perfect. I didn’t have the best vantage point so i may have missed a lot of what Gurley was doing today. This won’t be my only look at him in camp.
Offense looked good, a couple nice TD’s from Goff to Cooks, one bomb and someone shouted “where was that in the Super Bowl?” (Actually it was me, i muttered it, but i’m someone.) Woods looks good. Kupp is good to go, took a ton of reps, looked great. Goff did get picked by Talib covering Woods and there was a botched snap, i think, again didn’t have the best vantage point.
Bortles looked good a lot of the time too, though he did have a turnover or two. He had several nice completions to Jojo Natson. I’ve been skeptical of Jojo’s chances of making the team but if he can up his receiving game, i may have to change my mind. Mike Thomas had some action from Bortles too.
John Kelly got a lot of reps including with the first team, based on today, seems like he figures in the Rams plans.
Henderson got a lot of work too, with the ones and the twos, a lot of balls thrown his way.
Like i said, it was really crowded so i didn’t do a lot of moving around, mostly watched whatever was in front of me so my impressions could be different than what others were seeing.
Anyway, that’s day one.
I’ll be back Monday.

Just got home from TC. Had a great time with the fellas. Wow! Was it packed with Ram Fans today. All the stand were full and standing room only around the field. I bet there were over 5,000, by far the biggest crowd at TC since they came from St Louis. Hot, mid 80’s.
I got there at a little after 3, and found a seat in the south stands at 45 yd line. QB’s were already out there taking snaps from Allen, Hrynkiewicz, Kolone and Chandler Brewer, throwing to coaches. Allen looks bigger, Hrnky is even bigger. I could see right away Bortles is a huge upgrade over Mannion. Goff, Bortles and Wolford all throw tight spirals, Brandon Allen looks a step behind. I liked what I saw from Wolford.
LB’s were first to come out in front of my section. (no way I could move around, too crowded). LB coach had them stripping away balls. They did this several ways, punching from underneath, over the top and just slamming the ball any way they could. Lots of “Ohhhss and Ahhs” from the crowd. Next they practiced covering screen passes. Coaches played as RB’s. Then some “tip ball” drills.
LB play that stood out: Mathews doesn’t look like he’s lost a step. He’s as quick as any other LB, Littleton is buffed, Kiser was practicing intense and quick. Hager is a hitter, liked what I saw there. I wasn’t impressed with Oko, he looks like he’s holding back a little. Ketner Kupp, Coops’s brother, is not going to make the team, noticeably slower.
Next group was the DL. They started with hitting the sleds after zigging around a dummy. Of course AD got the loudest “pop”. Brockers was right there, He looks bigger and is very quick. F-Meyers looked good. Gaines a bit slower, but showed power. But DL who impressed me most? Joseph-Day. He’s almost as big as Brockers and looks very quick. Next drill was speed rush around dummy, and lean into coach with ball. AD and J-D swatted ball out real quick. Boogie Roberts, who I liked going into TC, was a disappointment. He is slow, and could barely move the sled. It’s only the first day though.
Because we were in the south stands, we didn’t get to see 7 on 7 and 11 on 11. that was on the north field and the stands over there were packed. I could only see with binoculars and hard to make out player numbers. I did see Gurley out there. Don’t think he’s be out there if he was still hurt.
Of course I missed stuff because of shooting the breeze, but all in all it was a good practice, players were into it.
Players that stood out to me:
Blake Bortles. Not hard for the average fan to see this guy is a much better QB than Sean Mannion. I can’t wait to see him in pre-season, not only to see how good he really is, but him being better than Mannion, we can see how good the new WR’s in camp are.
Sebastian Joseph-Day. Almost a mirror image of Brockers. this guy is cut and quick. Only day one of practice, but he stood out today.
Mathews looked good.
About all I can give right now. I was disappointed I didn’t get to see the 7 on 7 and 11 on 11. I’ll be there tomorrow and expect a big crowd again. I’ll make it a point to get to the OL and DB’s.
Of course I’ve left stuff out, but when I remember I’ll post here.

Great practice day. I just got off the 405 parking lot, cracked a Belgian White. We didn’t visit the beer tent today, VFR and I agreed to concentrate on the field. Want to get this out to you all as fast as possible.
I’m not going to go through my notes and just put info out as I put them down, so it’s going to be somewhat jumbled.
Got here early and got a good seat in north stands, really good view of 11 on 11 later on, WR work and DB’s. Bones came out and tossed balls to kids and had them run. Kids loved it. Goff came over and tossed a few to the kids. Gurley in uni but not taking part today.
First workout in front of us. Fielding punts from machine. Taking turns were Jo Jo, Thomas, Webster, Hendricks, Lloyd, Jalen Greene and Austin Proehl. Webster has good hands and is fast with good moves. Henderson also, guy has great burst and change of direction. Jo Jo also did a good job. The others so so. Coach Bones spent time between each KO with all of them in a huddle, teaching. Each got a couple reps.
Further down the field the OL worked on hand placement, footwork hitting the sled. Kromer moving in and out teaching.
QB’s practiced with RB’s handing off left then right. WR’s taking quick passes from coach after zigging and zagging. Good drill to see who makes good cuts, Webster impressed me again. Of course Woods and Cooks were the best. Kupp didn’t participate.
McVay came over and oversaw QB’s passing quick outs to WR’s and RB’s. Lots of interaction and instruction. (no DB’s).
Here I have to comment on QB’s after watching them yesterday and an hour into today. Goff looks great, and looks to have put on some weight. Bortles is definitely an improvement over Mannion. Quick release, good footwork and a better scrambler than Goff (so far). John Wolford so far is better than Brandon Allen IMHO. Nice tight spiral and leads receiver better and more accurate than Allen.
Now 11 on 11. 1st team O vs 2nd team D. LT Whitworth, LG Noteboom, CAllen, RG Blythe, RT Havenstien. 2nd D RDE Morgan Fox, DT F-Meyers, NT Gaines, DT Smart, LDE Lawler.
2nd team O- LT Edwards, LG Kolone, C Neary, RG Demby, RT Evans. 1st team D- RDE Ebukam, DT Donald, NT Jo-Day, DT Bockers, LDE Fowler.
First teams stayed pretty much the same, though Demby got reps with 1st team and F-Meyers got rep with 1st team. I may have missed subs.
They went pretty had at each other in 11 on 11, considering no pads, hard to tell who got the better, especially along the line.
1st team went with 11 formation, put Kupp in motion on 1st play and Goff went incomplete to woods. a few plays later AD and Demby went at each other. Some good pass plays to Woods and Cooks. Malcolm Brown made a great one handed catch for TD. Brown looked good today, he got a lot of touches.
Goff to Kupp over the middle. Kupp looks great, Can’t tell he’s coming off an injury.
Bortles to Reynolds nice throw and catch. Kelly swing pass from Wolford, nice run after catch.
Hodge end around for some good yds. Peters with a pass breakup. Henderson catching screen more than a few times. Guy has good hands.
Big collision between Reynolds and Weddle, they helped each other up, both fine.
Tanzel Smart and Brian Allen shoving match had to be broken up. Tempers flaring and McVay stops action and calls a huge huddle of all the players, I’m guessing to calm them down and focus.
Action resumes with Kelly getting a good run. Justin Davis turns a swing pass in a gain of 10.
Talib just misses a pick 6.
There it is fellow Ram Fans. A very good practice. I’m forming some opinions about players. Who’s doing good, who doesn’t. Just 2 days in so a lot can happen. Without them being in pads, its hard to judge OL or DL play. Some guys look good so far. I like what I’ve seen from most of the starters. New guys Weddle and Matthews look very good. Wolford at QB, Jo-Day at DT and Webster at WR-returner have impressed me the most.
I’m there tomorrow and hopefully there will be less of a crowd so I can get around the field easier to see position groups.

Demby did take snaps at G with the ones, but mostly played with the 2’s and I think that where he belongs.
avis is looking good. Kelly, meh. Webster and Jo-Day have impressed me so far. Wolford at QB is a player. Brandon Allen hasn’t impressed.I just read Cameron De Silva’s article on TC and I have to dis agree with one of his takes. He thinks Henderson is clearly the #2 RB. After todays practice its clear to me Malcom Brown is. He had a very good day today, better than Henderson. Brown is way better at pass blocking and finds holes through the middle. He had a very good day today.
52, Matthews, was out there with the 1 defense and doesn’t look like he’s lost a step. Rams fans are going to be pleased to have Mr. Mathews in horns.

Good crowd today. Not near as many as yesterday though. Nice breeze blowing with temps around 80. It was Vamos day and they had a live band playing and free giveaways. I must say, the Rams have really embraced their fan base and these training camps are so fan centric it unbelievable.
Practice for just day 2 was very spirited. Guys are moving fast, giving there all it appears. One player that never gives up is 99, Donald. Of course we all expected that but I feel for the OL opposite him, He gives 110% every play! He even ran down field after a pass was thrown when there was no need for it!
Gurley in uniform no helmet not practicing
Joseph-Day is a player! He was giving as much as he was receiving.
Gaines is short and stocky but strong! He took on a double team and pushed them back into the pocket on a pass play and then took on the same double team during a run, occupying those two OL players. Kid has a chance to start or at least be in on certain situations.
Mike Thomas seems a little rusty. Just not fluid and his hands are not that sure. He dropped one pass but others sort of bobbled till he secured them.
Kupp is 100% recovered from what I can tell. Caught one across the middle and turned it upfield for a TD.
Wolford (QB) looks real good. nice arm. Sharp throws. Let’s see if can grasp the offense.
Speaking of offense, during the first part of 11×11, Goff was razor sharp but more importantly, they ran like four different plays from the same formation and motion. How does a defense game plan for this?
Henderson is the real deal. The kid can catch, run and field punts and kickoffs. Very fluid and has good vision and cuts. He’s quick more than fast. Justin Davis and John Kelly have some competition. I don’t see the Rams carrying four RB’s. I see it now as Gurley, Brown then Henderson. We cannot stash Henderson the practice squad, he would be snatched up too fast but more likely wouldn’t even clear waivers.
Speaking Malcom Brown, guy looks fine. Just like before his injury last year.
Unfortunately, from our seats it was hard to see the o-line. All I know is that the first fight of camp came from Demby and Donald. Didn’t see what triggered it. There was a second fight with Brian Allen and I think it was Tanzel Smart. That’s when McVey stopped practice and pulled everyone, and I mean everyone into a hudle. My guess was to calm everyone down. Man, only the second day of practice!
I really feel these guys are hungry and want to redeem themselves for the SB loss. They will be the team to beat!

On offense, Reynolds made a nice TD grab after beating Rapp and the other safety on. Dbl move. Later , he snagged a high throw over the middle in tight coverage. As he came out of his break, his knees were bent and lower to the ground and immediately stretched up to catch the ball; very athletic play.
Also , Thomas has been running good routes and making catches today and previously on Saturday. If was asked to rank the Wr’s after a couple days of practice I would him at 4 – 5, probably behind Reynolds.

Malcolm Brown is having an outstanding camp and will remain the #2 RB. Mostly due his ability to pass block. He was targeted a lot coming out of the backfield yesterday and never dropped a pass, even catching a one handed TD over Peters.

Really not much different to report from the previous two days but let me say this, practice is very spirited! No fights today but some guys did end up on the ground from some subtle tackling.
A couple of stand out players today were Josh Reynolds and Mike Thomas. Both making some leaping catches, using their size to their advantage. Josh looked a little smoother and surer of himself than Thomas but it was nice to see Mike making some plays.
There were a lot of second and third strings guys being rotated in and out. None really stood out, good or bad. The offense started off with a bunch of runs and without pads on, it’s not really fair to judge how some did.
Some situational football was incorporated. Two minute drill with the sound system cranked up and it was loud! First team moved the ball well but it was against the 2nd team defense.
I’m hoping tomorrow brings out the pads. These guys want to hit!

The battle for that 6th spot for WRs between Thomas and Hodges… it’s going to be a tough call…
Thomas looks good, catching everything… I think it will come down to who is better on ST….
As far as the UDFA rookie TEs, no one impressed me cause no one stood out,,, No. 84/Brookers, I don’t see him making this team…. He seemed to get throws being over thrown to him, or he might of not run the right routes…. But it was only one day for me to observe….
As for the RBs, I really didn’t notice either Kelly or Davis, but I did notice Henderson…. Lining up wide for a route on drills… Same for Gurley…
QBs, Goff looks great, sharp and on target, whereas Bortles looks good,
The O-line, today’s starters, was LT/Noteboom, LG/Demby, C/Allen, RG/Blythe, RT/RHav…
Demby was playing with the second unit at RG during camp day 2,,, but today he was with the 1st unit at LG… Also at the Center position on QBs underneath the center drills.

Oh My God! Legends day was incredible. I had no idea it was gonna be like it was. There were 50 Rams legends there today just milling around, signing autographs. I’m sure you all probably heard Steven Jackson was there, signed a one day contract to retire as a Ram, so many great Rams of the past. And then after practice several players came over to say hi and sign including Gurley, Hekker, Zeurlein, McQuaid and SJ.
Practice was probably the least interesting part of the day.
I thought today was a padded practice, some players were in pads but some were in shorts so i’m not sure what it counted as. It was a low key practice, the last half hour was at walk through speed. Many veteran days off: Whitworth, Weddle, Matthews, AD, Brockers, Talib.
I watched Gurley a lot. He looked good, like himself. Maybe a couple times walking he seemed to have a hitch in his giddyup but really looked good got no sense of him being damaged goods. They are really managing his reps.
My good buddy Jake McQuaid said tomorrow is gonna be the first real padded, got get ’em practice and i will be there.
Among the alumni that were there that i can rattle off off the top of my head: Henry Ellard, Preston Denard, Torry Holt, Mike Jones, Reggie Doss, Nolan Cromwell, Dennis Harrah, Irv Pankey, Dickerson, Everett, SJ, Ivory Sully, Greg Bell, LeRoy Irvin, David Hill, Bob Andrews, and a lot more i’ll hopefully remember when i look at my pics.
There was also a stadium virtual reality thing for Inglewood that was amazing. I hope it’s accurate ’cause i’m gonna love my seats if it is.

Josh Reynolds has some great plays today Goff found him over the middle on a dig route through a trio of defenders in the area, including Taylor Rapp, who recognized the play just a bit too late. However, I was impressed by his closing speed.
Cooper Kupp had a great deep reception from Goff on a play where they were lined up in a 1 x 3 formation. Kupp was the inside slot receiver on the right, and it looked like man coverage with a Cover-1 shell. Talib and Peters were in man coverage against Woods and Cooks to the outside. The defender (Marqui Christian or Robey-Coleman) on Kupp opened his hips at the snap and Kupp streaked down the seam for a wide open catch. Goff saw it all the way and hit him in stride, never even considering going elsewhere.
An interesting thing to note—I’ve seen our D play a lot of cover-3 with Robey-Coleman playing the deep safety and Weddle/Johnson/Rapp coming down into the box as a hybrid linebacker/safety type, usually over the tight end. Our offense has responded by throwing the mid-distance out routes and digs that the cover-3 are susceptible to.
Weddle and John Johnson have a very good rapport already, as they were trying to disguise coverages. Most of the time, they make it look like a cover-2 shell, but they’ll break off into a cover-1 or cover-3 at the break with Johnson typically going down into the box. Very exciting to see them test Goff, but even more exciting to consider what they’ll do to opposing offenses during the season. Weddle is going to freak up a lot of plays for opposing offenses.
Everett often lining up wide, and being guarded by Peters or Talib, rather than a safety.

So Ram
I left early but have a few takes from camp today.
Everett looks leaner, stronger, faster. I think I saw Reynold make a real nice play. Copper Kupp made a play on an out. Cooks looks really quick. Wants to get physical in the middle. Nice to see. I think he might have bulked up.
My take from today is how freaking much Morgan Fox is going to mean to The Rams upfront. He is going to get a lot of reps. I thought he got some first team reps today ??
Troy Hill is looking sharp. He is such a solid special teams guy. I like him. Once again for fans saying trade & cut him. There is a reason he got a 2 year extension.
Hatfield made a nice play. He was wondering if it was a penalty, because I think he knocked someone on there butt.
Weddle made a nice play. I got him going by calling his name. Donald ran up & picked him up. Donald was having fun. In good spirits. He slapped Clay 5 after a QB sack. Going to be fun watching the Vets. Called Weddle an old man. He dresses in all long sleeves & pants.unlike Peters.
Speaking of Talib is just a solid CB.
I’m a big fan of Richards. Not sure he makes it, but he always shows up. Marquis Christian
got some solid reps today. Both blondes?? Lol.John Johnson is real good.
Malcom Brown is a flat out stud. He is all-around good.Speical teams, catching, out of backfield, blocking.
Justin Davies made a play. Aaron Donald after the play tried to dislodge it a few times. He was having fun with it.Ball security is a Ram things
Ram fans around are excited about Henderson. They say he is going to be fun to watch . Smooth.

Really nice day at camp, weather was great. It was youth day, big turnout, lots of kids.
I gotta say, seeing Donald in pads in the blue and white uniform, is quite a sight to see.
I was just coming to the conlusion that there’s really not much difference between in pads and not these days but though the difference may not be huge, it is significant. No tackling but felt like real football.
The offense won most of the time. Goff looks great, seems like he has more zip on the ball. Henderson continues to get a lot of reps. Thomas doing stuff with the 2’s so maybe he has a shot. Higbee seems to have taken his game up a notch.
I’m looking for big things from Fowler. He’s on the field early getting individual coaching and just looks really strong a focused out there.
The 3rd and 4th QB get no reps in team drills except after practice is over. I read this is to get them ready for preseason games in case anyone is wondering how we’re approaching preseason this year.

Another energetic practice. Couldn’t ask for better weather, upper 70’s with a nice breeze. We first got a look at guys taking punt from the machine. Austin Proehl, Jo Jo Natson, Nsima Webster, Alex Bachman all got a couple of turns. they had 5 gunners coming at them as the ball was shot to them from the machine. Jo Jo still has the best juke moves and is quicker than the rest. I rate Webster not far behind him. The others, meh. At the end of the drill, Jo Jo fielded 5 punts before he dropped all of them trying to field the sixth. (two in each arm and one between his legs).
Gurley dressed but held out. LB Okow not dressed, tight hammy, was told he should go on Sat. in scrimmage with Chargers.
I think McVay wanted a quieter first part of practice as most position groups worked on technique and situationals. they didn’t really start going at each other till after the second hour with 7 on 7’s.
7 on 7. Woods from Goff, Henderson quick out. Kupp quick out. Goff looking sharp, getting ball out quick. Rookie Long with a nice breakup. Everrett with play action TD. Mundt TD vs 1st unit D. Austin Proel from Brotles nice play action catch. Brown wiith sideline grab for TD from Goff. Higbee gets one over the middle in traffic.
On to Red Zone drill. 2nd OL Evans LT, Demby LG, Nearly C, Kolone RG, Edwards RT. Bortles moved the ball, tucked it and ran for yds on one play, Henderson screen from Goff for TD for 1st team O. Kupp TD over middle.
Here I had my first technical issue. My pen quit working. Everything is now from memory not much more though some 11 on 11 with a lot of good contact.
Kupp got a long pass from Goff, Brown got some good runs and catches. Bortles connected to Thomas for a nice gain. 1st team D got to Bortles couple of times. Jo-Day with a sack (He was with 1st team all practice, Gaines with 2nd D.
69 is Sebastian Joseph-Day and he’s been starting at NT with Brockers on his left and Donald on his right. Gaines has been starting NT for the 2nd team D.
Day and Brockers are about the same size. Both look in terrific shape and giving the OL all they can handle. I really like what I’m seeing from the starting DL.
Webster can field punts. If he can show as a WR in pre-season he might have a chance to unseat Jo Jo as 6the WR.
Great practice. players were intense and they don’t get to do any standing around. No fights.
I think they are all off tomorrow and go to Costa Mesa a few miles down the roed to scrimmage and practice with the Chargers They start at 10am and I plan to be there.
Thursday will be an early report. I’ll try and post as soon as I get home.

headslapper
I got hooked up with my job and spent the day in a VIP tent.
View ended up being both great and bad depending on the time of practice.
It was the first day in pads and there were some fun drills for sure. Special Teams was the most fun to watch for some good hitting.
TG3 was on the field but not suited up. Whit played the whole time. I had the OL near me for a while and paid special attention to Allen. I would say he looked almost as tall as Blythe, the two of them have a very similar build actually. Where Allen seemed to stand out was during a drill using the slides. He seemed to have the most punch out of all the linemen (Noteboom’s punched seemed pretty weak actually). I also watched him on 11 on 11 and he seemed to work really well with Goff, unlike others with Bortles etc who seemed to have some shaky exchanges. All in all, Allen is not my biggest worry, Noteboom looks good, but wondering about the lack of punch.
I noticed that Higbee was a man among boys when the TEs were working out, he just looks huge and great. He also seemed to be playing in front of Everett and had a nice TD catch from Goff in 11 on 11. I wonder if Higbee is holding off Everett and knows his spot as top dog is being challenged, either way he is stepping up and looks great.
There will be no QB controversy from what I saw today. Goff seems in a different league than Bortles and Bortles seemed in a different league than the other two camp arms.
JoJo seemed to get a lot of work as a starting WR and made a few plays. He also stayed after working on punt catches from the jug machine. He seemed to get a lot of play today and seemed to make the most of it.
The Goff connection to Cooks looked natural and great, but there was one pass to Cooks that was low and difficult but that I believe he should have had, His hands still seem to lack strength for those hard catches. When it is placed in stride it looks amazing and that happened more than once. Timing seems better than ever. Later on Goff to Woods seemed to take over and timing looked great there too.
Both Brown and Henderson looked spry and had some good runs. Henderson had a great catch going up for it and think he has a lot of catching ability.
Weather was great and it was really fun watching Brokers and Whit playing with their kids on the field after practice.
All in all, things moved pretty quick and it seemed like an efficient practice. Seems to me that the offense is ahead of the defense right now (which makes sense).
That is mostly what I remember, I am sure others will have more. My first camp report is done

znModeratorA late Day 3, 7/29 entry.
Rampage2K
First of all, I wish y’all had a chance to make it out to one of these open practices….the Rams have come along way since their first year back and just keep adding more to an already fantastic experience…shaded bleachers, kids zone, food court, beer garden, team gear store, stage for the legends, autograph booths, free swag, etc. the Rams truly are a first class organization
Amazing thinking back to 1994 when you could just walk up and watch practice on a beat up field with about 10-20 other fans…. no bleachers, no food, no fanfare, nothing. Times sure have changed as it has become a festival of sorts with thousands of fans, even on a Monday afternoonOk back to the day….Cool to walk into the main concourse and see all the legends there just hanging out, signing or on stage talking Rams. Not much of an autograph hound so I headed up to the fields to watch the players warm up and get some good seats. Got lucky by sweet talking to some little cutie at the season ticket members booth and she hooked me up with a “preferred seating” pass that was a sectioned off bleacher with free snacks and beverages….definitely a nice surprise.
Watching the QB’s warm up there is no doubt who the starter is as Goff just throws such a better looking ball with zip…Bortles looked good too, he’s a big kid. Him and Goff seem to be buddies as they were always hanging out and doing drills with each other …. at the end of practice they walked over to the southeast side of the fields and had a little battle of throwing the ball in the big yellow trash can….Bortles made one, Goff was close but didn’t get one in. Pretty fun to watch
Gurley, looks fast and no indication that he is hurt…looked great. Once again he ended his day on the juggs machine like he always does.
Looks like McVay finally might have found his Chris Thompson in the form of rookie Darrell Henderson … dude catches everything and is quite shifty. A short guy, but not little… can’t wait to see him in preseason
Not only do the Rams have three great WR’s, they now have four!!! Reynolds looks like a different player compared to last training camp…. he stole the show today by getting wide open on a long bomb with a perfect throw from Goff…. Woods dropped and easy TD in red zone portion, but he won’t do that in a game ever.
Not a lot of physical stuff as they were in shells as opposed to fully padded.
Fun to watch McVay do what he loves and that is coaching them up…he’s all over the place and always coaching.
GZ was booming 60 yarders right at us….and Hekk was drilling punts as usual
NRC made a hell of an INT
Rapp seemed to get plenty of reps with the ones…looks good.
Everett and Higbee look like men amongst boys out there….they should both be improved in 2020
Big Whit had the day off
That’s all I really got….Always seems to go by so fast.

Safety Blitz
I attended two practices and am again going today. Who impressed me most?
Henderson..amazing acceleration and great hands. This guy will pick up the slack.
Weddle always talking to teammates…great communicator.
Gurley not limping at all and Kupp looks ready to rock.
MCVAY IS A RELATIONSHIP GENIUS.

Gaines may be short, but he is wide. I think he and Sebastian-Day will spell for each other on run/pass plays. Gaines is a big boy, and he will be a roadblock in the middle. We don’t need him to get push up the middle (though he certainly does that!!); we need him to just clog the middle.
Rapp looks good, but I’m a bit concerned that he’s often just standing around instead of communicating with the ones in the secondary—Talib, Peters, Weddle, and Johnson. With his helmet off, he really looks like a lost little high school kid, but I think he’s going to factor in pretty well.
David Long is a true technician. His athleticism doesn’t really jump out at you, but he had really good technique. He got beat on a crisp five-yard slant by Michael Thomas, but I think that’s because he was on an island and his responsibility was not to get beat deep. He came in and made the tackle right after the catch was made. On another play, he was isolated wide on Robert Woods, and he was able to knock the ball away. He did a really good job of using the sideline to squeeze Woods before reaching out to bat the ball away. I am VERY excited about David Long.

So Ram
I think Noteboom & Brian Allen are doing an excellent job upfront. The depth at guard is my biggest concern. I’m still not solid on Austin Blythe. He is a good technician though. He Maneuvers defense of lineman around well. He gets over powered easy.
Kolone actually looks okay. He is a strong guy.Evans & Edwards are moving around a lot.Looking forward to the preseason.Bill Johnson is gone , so the D’line Is going to bring in a different mind set. Wade adapts well
to different types off fronts.I saw Marquis Christian in a lot.
The rookie Taylor Rapp did not show much except a little on special teams. Did not pick up on Nick Scott. There were a couple sleepers out there.
The Rams Depth is pretty good.

Here is Austin Blythe on his back legs trying to block. Not great form. Just saying I’m not a big fan & this doesnot help change my Perspective of his play. My point is I believe he is the weak link the last 4 games of the season & playoffs. He played real well against Dallas though.

Kiser can cover sideline to sideline. He would have destroyed the RB before he could get out of bounds. When plays with pads he seems smaller & faster. I would not take anything away from his performance.
Fowler is being over looked. Should be his best pro season coming up.
Does Barron not being on team change anything as far as personnel grouping ? Clay Mathews is moving all the time from left de to right de to all lower postions. The defensive rotation is changing as well. Wade has been a more of a 3-4 guy with a lot of 4-3 concepts. Morgan Fox seems to almost like a 4-3 DT the way he postions himself inside at points

Gaines might be in the mix, but so far in TC, he’s #2. Jo-Day has been playing with the ones. Day is clearly bigger, faster and has shown great tenacity and drive. I’ve watched the DL group during their hitting the sled drills, coming out on snap drills zigging and zagging around the dummies and Jo-Day is right there with AD and Brockers as far as delivering the biggest “pop”. It’s also worth noting that when they are standing around, Brockers and AD are constantly talking to Jo-Day, more so than Gaines. It remains to be seen how it all translates to the field against other competition. We’ll get that today in Costa Mesa when the Rams scrimmage the Chargers. I’ll be there.

Sebastian Joseph-Day had a great off season. He’s come back bigger and stronger then his red shirt year as a rookie and looks primed to battle Gaines to start at Nose Tackle. I loved Joseph-Day at Rutgers, one of the players that shined in a program that in most cases was overwhelmed by their competition. I expect both players to have major impacts improving the run defense as well as freeing up Aaron Donald some.

znModeratorThe last day
49RH8R
First of all, this was night and day from when I visited the first year the Rams were back. Like, not even close. There were tents for games, merchandise, alumni autographs, and a tent where you could wear virtual reality goggles and see what the new stadium will look like from the inside. And that was even before you went to watch the practice. The first year I went there was like one hot dog stand and now there was a whole food court area in the lower parking lot. Next to that was the kids area with about 6-8 huge inflatable bounce houses and stuff. Frankly I was a little bummed it has gotten so big. I talked to a lot of people and this was their first year visiting.
I was in line for parking and the cars were at a dead stop when Eric Weddle pulled up next to me and went in the side gate. He’s got a pretty badass white F-150 with black detailing. He could be driving anything, and he drives a Ford truck which I thought was cool.
Dennis Smith and LeRoy Irvin were in the alumni tent signing autographs and taking pictures.
This was the last practice at Irvine, so it was just a walkthrough, no contact at all. Whitworth, Gurley, and Kupp were all out there.
*Kupp was getting more reps and special attention from Goff it seemed. McVay had Goff pointing out reads and his checkdowns instead of throwing the ball but sometimes Goff would finish by just offloading it to Kupp. It was like they were trying to knock the rust off even if it meant just tossing him the ball.
*Higbee came out first as the #1 TE but I’m not sure what that means. Everett got a lot of reps but it seemed Higs got more.
*There were some pretty sweet screen plays to Gurley and Kupp that I didn’t recognize from any game last year. It was almost a long, frozen rope lateral behind the line of scrimmage.
*There was some talk of Demby making noise but there is no doubt Allen and Noteboom are the starters. Allen looks kind of short but rock solid.
*Clay Matthews was mostly lined up as rusher outside the RT. I did not see him much at ILB at all.
*Weddle showed blitz a few times.
*It was interesting watching the defense because they had so many substitutions. Most of the DB’s like Troy Hill, Hatfield, Marqui Christian were out with the 1’s. Interestingly, rookie David Long was not with the 1’s but on the other side of the field with the backups.
*SJD is a big boy and seems like he has the inside track to start at NT. Gaines was not out there much but was on the other side of the field with the backups like Long.
*Rapp got a lot of reps with the 1’s and even played FS with Weddle moving to SS. There were some packages where JJ, Weddle, and Rapp were all on the field at the same time.
*Troy Hill looks like the 3rd CB and was in for Peters a lot. I think Peters might be a little banged up but he did play.
*Morgan fox surprisingly played a lot with the starters.
*Gurley and J.J. were hamming it up big time on one play. In fact, JJ hit the ground rolling and laughing because Gurley must have said something pretty funny. It was a very lose walkthrough all throughout.
*Malcom Brown clearly #2 and I didn’t see much of Henderson
*These guys were definitely having fun out there and I think they know they are good.
*During red zone drills, Gurley ran a fly pattern as a WR from the 20 for a TD.
*Some loud fan started the “Who’s House? RAMS HOUSE!” chant and got some of the players fired up.
*I’ve been back and forth on Serena Morales being hot or not but after seeing her in person I’ll go with hot.
*Hekker was leaving the field after signing autographs but people started chanting “Johnny Johnny” and he came back out for more.
*Johnny Mundt was signing autographs near me and I gave him a shout out being as he’s from my hometown. We talked for a second because my buddy coached his brother who is a stud baseball player.
