WinnbradParticipant
I’m not worried about these preseason games. Their purpose is to evaluate who to cut, and who to keep.
Bradford looks good. Britt, if he can stay out pf prison, could be a big time playmaker. That’s something this team hasn’t had at receiver for a long time. Quick seems to be stepping up. And if Austin can make plays on special teams, or on offense, so much the better.
We know what Cook gives us, when he makes the effort. And we know Kendricks is a keeper.
Stacy and Cunningham are the backs, and I’m thrilled with that.
The D-line is excellent.
After that, keep the O-line healthy, try to cut down on penalties, and no more stupid suspensions (I’m looking at you Bailey).
Oh, and don’t turn the ball over. Ever. For the entire season.
All that matters now is beating the @#$% out of the Vikings.
WinnbradParticipant1. Bradford continuing to look sharp.
2. Britt, Quick, and Austin. Make plays.
3. Starters = continue not turning the ball over. Nothing will screw this team more than turnovers.
It would be nice if we could see fewer than double digit penalties. I know I’m asking for a lot here, and that a lot of penalties are being committed by guys that probably won’t make the team, but is it too much to ask for less than 10?
WinnbradParticipantJoemad is right! The NFL network **TV** schedule says midnight on Sat night, Sun morn. Sweet. I can DVR it and watch it Sunday morning.
WinnbradParticipantCrap!
8PM Eastern means it will run right through the season premiere of Dr. Who on BBC America.
Me, the wife and the kids are Who fanatics, and Saturday is exactly 2 days before we have to send my daughter off to college.I guess I’ll be recording the game and watching the Who…
A fellow Whovian! Nice. 🙂 Yeah, my wife and I are crazy about that show. Have you seen Sherlock, also? Some of the same Dr. Who writers and producers are involved. It’s got a similar feel. Very good.
WinnbradParticipantWell I’ve never even heard of PDT.
Can you do the time-algebra and tell me
what time the game will be on in the EAST ?w
vNFL.com says 8PM Eastern.
WinnbradParticipantNice stats, which make an excellent point, imo. The preseason is useless for anything other than evaluating players. 🙂
August 17, 2014 at 6:16 pm in reply to: Roger Goodell To NFL Players: 'Murdering Your Wife Will Result In Automatic 4-Ga #4239WinnbradParticipantSeems excessive for a first offense.
WinnbradParticipantI almost get the impression Fisher was
trying to test his secondary against Green Bay
more than anything else. Ya know.
Doesnt look like he was trying
to get the DLine involved much.
I think he already knows what ‘they’ can do.w
vI think you’re right. The starting D-line looked… “meh”. Almost like they had been told to tone it down. The Rams and GB starters did not blitz against the starting QBs. I guess that’s common.
August 17, 2014 at 8:28 am in reply to: Observation hands to the face automatic 1st down. Is that fair? #4177WinnbradParticipantNo. I don’t like it either. But the league wants offenses to lead this game. Auto first down penalties help make that happen.
WinnbradParticipantFewer penalties on the starters. That was an improvement.
The O, even with no running game, clicked well on the TD drive. It was nice to see playmakers stepping up.
Starters didn’t have any turnovers. That’s always a good thing.
Pead = ACL tear. Done. Per twitter. My opinion: injury settlement and cut him. I know it’s tough to cut a second rounder, but he has shown nothing.
Rodgers is ridiculous. If he had stayed in the game, he would have put up 40.

WinnbradParticipant“As a practical matter, it’s the Legion of Boom rule. In 2013, the Seahawks brazenly committed illegal contact and holding, knowing that, if illegal contact happens on every play, the officials won’t throw a flag on every play. In an intriguing segment that aired on NBCSN’s NFL Turning Point, Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman was displaying to a teammate on the practice field techniques for concealing illegal contact.”
I watched a couple of preseason games this week on the lack of D NFL Network – Bears and Eagles from last week and the Jags last night. They did call it almost every pass play. It was ridiculously easy for any receiver to simply run into a DB who’s more than 5 yards past the LOS and out would come the flag. So, the play of the night was run into a DB and draw a flag for a FD. That said, it was a preseason game so we’ll see how far it goes once the regular season starts. If they’re looking for more scoring – this is one way to enhance that. Simply look at last night’s NFL preseason scores.
The jersey grabbing, pushing, pulling, bumping stuff has been going on for decades. Many times, it goes both ways. After all the emphasis on illegal hits and injury producing head hunting the past few seasons, this would really make it much harder on any defense to slow down any NFL passing attack. I prefer balance and a defensive game isnt’ a bad game in my opinion.
Yep. I saw a few of the *running into a DB plays*. The WR just ran downfield, 5 yards past the LOS, straight into the DB, and if the DB did anything other than get out of the way, out came a flag. I doubt they call it like that in the regular season, because a team could score almost every time they had a possession.
This is going to be interesting to watch. Enforcing it is going to be tricky. My guess is, like all judgement calls, it will depend on which officiating crew is working the game. Some will call it often, some will let’em play.
WinnbradParticipant*When* it’s called is gonna be a huge factor. It’s only a 5 yard penalty, but it’s an auto first down. So when it’s 3rd and 17, and a DB grabs for a second and gets called… ouch.
WinnbradParticipantI’ve watched a lot of preseason games, and so far the refs are calling a lot of defensive holding on the DBs. Especially on slants and double moves when a WR runs by his guy. If the DB gets “grabby” at that point, he gets a flag.
I’m not certain how all of this is gonna play out. It could have a huge impact on the game. So many DBs grab guys on slants and quick look-in routes. If the refs keep throwing flags at this rate, they’re gonna break some kind of record.
I’m also seeing a lot of “hands to the face” calls against the D-lineman. Even if the hands just go to the helmet for a second, they’re getting a flag.
WinnbradParticipantWell, sure, but they’re just pre-season blessings.
August 14, 2014 at 2:42 pm in reply to: Are the Vikings already looking past the Rams in week #1.? #3975WinnbradParticipantWell, to be fair, compared to Brady, Rodgers, and Brees, Sam shouldn’t be mentioned. The Vikes will try to run against the Rams, early and often, and then make play action passes, or very quick throws when they can.
But I don’t think the Vikes are looking past the Rams. They’ll be game-planning like crazy against the Rams. Especially the Rams D-line.
Let’s hope the Vikes secondary is terrible, and Britt/Quick and company can make some big plays against them. Then we’ll get to watch Quinn and company tee-off on Matt Cassell. Or whoever is gonna be their QB.
WinnbradParticipantThat’s good news on Long and Wells. Thanks, ZN!
WinnbradParticipantBradford, Britt, Quick. Make some plays.
August 12, 2014 at 3:09 pm in reply to: after 1 pre-s. game & all the camp reports what are the concerns v. good omens? #3857WinnbradParticipantConcerns:
1. Penalties
2. More penalties
3. The Leg – You can’t go 1-3 unless they’re all longer than 50 yards. Especially at home, in a dome.Good omens:
1. The RBs look decisive and “crisp”. Stacy, Cunningham, and Mason hit the dang daylight and take what’s there. Not a lot of college running, where they bounce around outside and try to beat people with speed and moves. Unless you’re the next Barry Sanders, don’t do that. If the O-line blocks 3 yards, the RB should get at least 4. Take what’s there and be quick about it.2. The D-line is going to be the best pass rushing line in the NFL. They have the skill, now they need opportunity. If the offense could ever get a decent lead in the 4th quarter, this D could break the sack record.
3. No turnovers in pre-season game 1. The Rams simply cannot afford any this year. The Seahawks and Niners destroy teams that turn the ball over.
4. Special teams, with the exception of “The Leg” looked great.
I’m not worried about tackling. Every game I watched last week had poor tackling.
WinnbradParticipantUnhappy with his team’s 14 penalties against the Saints, Fisher made his team run a sprint for every player who committed a penalty. That essentially meant the whole team had to run, though some more than others.
Excellent. Run them until they puke. Then run them some more.
I’m sick of the damned penalties.
WinnbradParticipantI watched several of the other preseason games, and tackling was bad everywhere. I expect it’ll get better.
Agreed on Bradford. If he’s healthy, play him.
WinnbradParticipantIt seems like the league is trying to make something out of nothing. I still think the best option is to get rid of it. It slows the game down for no reason.
IMO, give teams 7 points for a TD, or let’em opt out and go for 2 from the 2 yard line.
It’s bad enough having so many games decided by a bad snap/bad hold/gust of wind, etc. Kicking a 33yd extra point just makes it harder for outdoor teams to consistently make extra points.
WinnbradParticipantI’ll be watching Mason, and Cunningham.
And team penalties.
And turnovers.
I know they’re gonna have some ugly moments, but this team has to cut down on penalties.
WinnbradParticipantI think he unquestionably is. He has some Martz to him, I think.
But…now he’s OUR sunovabitch.
Oh yeah. 🙂
WinnbradParticipantThis rule change is silly. It’s a solution looking for a problem. Either keep the conversion kick where it is or get rid of it.
WinnbradParticipantNo prob! Thanks for the help, Zach!

WinnbradParticipant@ WV: I’m guessing they’ll get rid of the ball very quickly. Whether they want to or not. 🙂

WinnbradParticipantI feel ya, but lots of 3-and-outs ain’t good for business. $$$ 🙂
WinnbradParticipantA shutdown corner is, of course, a wonderful thing. But I’d like a ball-hawking, extremely fast, high IQ safety. An Ed Reed, or Troy Polamalu type. Either one. But since they come along about once every ten years…
