ParticipantWade Phillips got kind of out-coached in the first half, but he made great adjustments going into the second half. He is really good at making halftime adjustments.

ParticipantI like it too Jack.

ParticipantWell I notice the modern wolf is friendlier.
He looks at the camera and grins, for one thing.
The dire wolf? He’s all hostile and growly.
….
Thus the name, ‘Dire’ wolf.
Dire: adjective, from the Latin dirus, meaning fearful or threatening.
Dire Wolf hates men wearing hoodies, capri pants and no socks.

ParticipantI guess that Donald is getting a new contract starting in 2018 and not an extension starting in 2019.
snowman
ParticipantDonald should get more than what Suh got. Donald deserves that.
More importantly, Suh’s deal was in 2015, and contracts go up annually with the cap. If you transported a 2015 Suh clone through time to 2018, HE would get more than Suh did in 2015.
I think that’s a great idea. Instead of trying to re-sign Donald we should clone 2015-Suh and sign him instead.

ParticipantIt will be fun to watch our starters vs. the Texans starters, especially all the new talent on defense. How will Talib and Peters defend Hopkins and Fuller? Will Suh chase Watson out of the pocket? Will Littleton be OK calling the defensive signals? Waiting to find out!

ParticipantI wish him well. I hope he finishes his career in Dallas and puts up numbers he can feel proud of.

ParticipantThe Rams have the seventh-most cap room in 2019, about $44 million, if I remember correctly. That includes Peters, Talib, Sullivan, Whitworth, Brockers, Cooks, Gurley and even Barron. Goff, Kupp, JJohnson and others still on their rookie contracts. All that cap room and we don’t have to part ways with an established veteran!
July 25, 2018 at 4:04 pm in reply to: Rosenthal; Barnwell … effects of Rams new contracts, on them & on the NFL #88508snowman
ParticipantRe-signing Gurley two years before his contract expires opens up the same can of worms the Falcons are trying to keep closed with regard to Julio Jones at the moment.
Not exactly. Gurley is in his rookie contract deal and Jones is in the second year of a five-year deal, his second contract. Jones was the highest paid wide receiver at the time he signed his deal, so it’s not apples to apples.

ParticipantI’m not sure that Cooper had two fumbles. The muffed punt actually hit Blake Countess in the foot, making it appear that Cooper muffed it. That was definitely on Countess.

ParticipantInteresting. Maybe Donald’s contract hangup is about guaranteed money and not an opt-out clause?
snowman
ParticipantMoving Havenstein to RG and putting Lucas or Noteboom at RT is a possibility too, although just replacing Brown with another guard would cause the least amount of disruption across the line.

ParticipantGood stuff! Thanks for posting it zn.
June 13, 2018 at 1:26 pm in reply to: informal poll: go ahead & guess…if healthy do the Rams have a top 5 offense? #87331snowman
ParticipantI think so, yeah. If the offensive line can stay pretty much intact through the whole season, yes I think so. The Rams can’t affect the Falcons, Saints, Steelers, etc… offense, but they are still strong at RB and have improved at WR, while Goff has gotten another year of experience. And I think the defense will force a lot of punts and turnovers, putting the offense back on a short field.

ParticipantGreat article, thanks for sharing it zn.

ParticipantJim Souhan, write for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, calls the NFL decision “cowardly”.
an excerpt:
This week, Philadelphia defensive lineman Chris Long said: “This is fear of a diminished bottom line. It’s also fear of a president turning his base against a corporation. This is not patriotism. … These owners don’t love America more than the players demonstrating and taking action to improve it.”
The NFL’s attempt to dictate the behavior of its black players is typical of our country’s treatment of minorities. We treat them badly, then order them not to inconvenience us.
EDIT:
It just hit me that mandatory attendance at church and tithing and all the other church rules generate fake devotion. It’s about obedience, not faith or patriotism.-

ParticipantI stopped clicking the HERD link months ago. I get sooo tired of reading the cheerleader posts, or self-appointed talent evaluator expert posts. Billy, you got banned from a dive bar!

ParticipantCool stuff, thanks for posting it zn.
In the FWIW department, the Vikings defensive coordinator, George Edwards, rented the house next to ours. My wife went outside and chatted with him and his wife while they were looking over the dandelions in the back yard. Irony: he rented the house from a guy who is a big Packers fan!

ParticipantI like this. The only real question marks that I see are at linebacker/edge rusher. Training camp and preseason will be interesting to watch and see who handles those assignments the best.
It will be fun to watch Suh blend in with Donald and Brockers, and see how good the new secondary can be with Peters, Talib and Shields working with Joyner and Johnson.

ParticipantAmerican companies can find a Russian contact with Iran and there you have your easy work-around.

ParticipantWell…somewhere in heaven, ole steely-eyed, intense, Chuck Knox is coaching against Bud Grant and Tom Landry.
Lets hope he wins one up there.

vWell said wv. RIP Chuck Knox.

ParticipantGood discussion, this is why I like this board more than others. We can agree on the concept of hit/miss grades but disagree on the process and the result without getting our undies in a bunch.
For me, it’s hard not to take draft position into consideration. There are certain expectations that come with being drafted in the top ten, or later in the first round, vs. pick #200 in the sixth round. And they are subjective.
I don’t know if I consider Tavon a miss. Can I have a third category called “push”? He did not become an every-down WR like I hoped, but he started 50 of 75 games, was targeted as a receiver almost 200 times in 2015-16 combined, was valuable as a third RB and gadget player and he returned kicks. Tavon played a lot, just not in the capacity one would expect or desire of the #8 overall pick. I end up looking at stats. If Tavon had five years like the first two years of Tyreek Hill’s career, I would call him a big hit.

ParticipantGood film. Gyllenhaal’s character really evolves from start to finish.
snowman
ParticipantThey cold line both teams up at the 50 yard line, and the kicking team snaps the ball to a holder, and the kicker kicks it away like a field goal. Not many people get hurt on field goals.

ParticipantGil Brandt is reporting some free agent signings following the draft. He lists the Rams as signing WR Steven Mitchell, USC and defensive back Afolabi Laguda, Colorado. Chargers signed a bunch, other teams starting to sign players,

ParticipantI think the odds of success in the middle rounds are improved by picking linemen.
snowman
ParticipantI think we all will feel a huge relief when Aaron Donald is signed to a long-term deal. This has been in the back of our minds for a long time.
