The QB has to learn an entire new language.

Yes and he’s still playing like a struggling rookie. That’s even with the fact that no one becomes a qb in the first place unless they are mentally set up to learn a system. AND the issue is unit cohesion anyway. Not everyone will be on the same page. I remember Saffold talking about learning a new system in 2011. It puts hesitation into everything. Heck Keenum was talking about this during the pre-season. It was new for him, too.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t get your forgetfulness on this. You can say other factors for you weigh more. But no one can just armchair into existence the idea that it’s easy for a team to learn an entirely new system. This has come up before, in spades, with extensive backing from articles and player comments and so on. I think for example about the switch to the McD system in 2011. It is just simply not an easy process, and that’s especially the case now, when the new CBA limits practice time. None of this is new discussion.

It’s a factor. You decide if it’s a major one.

Goff was a completely different animal than the O-line…he had more than just verbiage to overcome.

The Rams did install new concepts this year. When Groh came on board to revamp the passing game it also involved changing blocking concepts and that could definitely be affecting the play of the line.

However….As Zooey said, we are 12 weeks in now and this should be coming together and I would agree with that. Personally I’m leaning towards this one isn’t about the X’s and O’s but we need to think about the Joes.

    Here’s a pretty good article

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2005/zone-blocking-vs-man-blocking

There’s quite a bit about zone blocking vs man blocking if you google around…in one of them Billick was giving a white board write up I would have liked to watch but it probably wouldn’t go over to good while I’m here at work, I’ll catch it later at home.

the playcalling and overall strategy will reflect his style – which is to use the run to set up play action

That sounds like a Norv Turner offense to me…strive for run/pass ratio of 50/50.

I actually think Turner would be a good fit with Fisher and wanted them to hire him when Cleveland let him go.

BTW…For the “I love Mike Martz” guys…Martz was an assistant coach under Turner.

We had the Eagles game on the TV next to the Rams game so I watched a lot of the game.

I noticed, and mentioned this during the game, that Wentz had a lot of his passes knocked down. He’s a tall QB so the only thing I could think of was maybe he throwing a little 3/4 but I could never determine if that was the case or not. Maybe because he has such a long wind up and release it gave the line time to get up, and they had to have come in to the game with that in mind.

It really was amazing to me just how many times Cincy got a hand on his throws.

Not trying to come down on Wentz, as I had him as my pick at No. 1.

Hekker is a weapon no doubt about it…but to call a punter our best weapon, I think is a stretch.

I wouldn’t call Goff our best weapon on O at this point either. I think the best weapon on O is Gurley and every team that faces the Rams realizes they have to neutralize Gurley and they will win the game.

I know Gurley has been a non factor this year, but teams are game planning to stop him and by not really having any respect for the passing game, they can shut down the Rams run game.

I don’t think other teams are respecting the passing game because they know they can get pressure on the QB and he either throws short 3 step stuff all game or he gets bounced off the turf several times.

    Here’s one from Dewey-Cheatum-and How

Ex Ram fan that changed allegiance when the Rams left STL.

I was on the sunny side of the stadium – it went into shadow in the middle of the 3rd quarter. While the sun was on me it was gorgeous. In the shade, I kinda wished I’d had some gloves, but was still not bad. Probably low- to mid-40’s, which up here is not bad for December (it’s currently 29 and snowing).

Tom did spend much of the game taking the underneath routes – the few times he went deep, the Rams’ secondary did a nice job of contesting the pass. I give the Rams’ D lots of credit for limiting the Pats to FGs on four drives – only allowing two TDs to this offense, even without Gronk, should be considered a positive day.

McDonald looked to me to be the best player on the field at almost all times. He hit hard, covered well, seemed to be everywhere. I feel like he deserves credit for keeping about 8 more points off the board – two drives at least that would have resulted in points without his personal interdiction.

Also, Joyner looked really good, hit the snot out of Lewis (I think it was Lewis) at one point. Lewis bounced back like a foot and a half, ended up being dropped when the rest of the Rams D arrived, but Joyner put a walloping on him

Can’t remember where, but I either read or heard a report that some of the Rams came out of halftime bickering with each other…did you happen to notice this?

No, I didn’t notice. Seeing the game live has its benefits (you can see how coverages develop, etc) but you miss out on the details. Plus it’s not much fun watching the game surrounded by the enemy. Overall I much prefer watching the game on TV.

However, I think I will make a pilgrimage to the new stadium when it opens to see a game at some point. Maybe a bunch of us from the board can get together at the new stadium for a ‘Huddlefest’ sometime.

OK…I talked to another guy that was there and he didn’t notice that either.

When they get the new stadium I think I’ll feel compelled to go…just don’t have that with the coliseum. I had a chance to go the Miami game and decided to watch from my cozy room.

When I read that article I thought I was reading another poster on a website that really just wants Fisher gone.

I really didn’t read anything that someone “in the know” would report just some guy ranting is all I got out of it.

I think Fish is for sure going to be here but will have to EF Hutton his way to 2018.

    What I thought I watched

I figured Fisher was extended and it was just a matter of time before it was made public.

Goff still impresses….he’s a hard guy to tackle, kinda reminds me of a lighter Rothlisburgher (sp?)

Receivers dropped several balls that were put on the money, although I still think the offensive game plan is woefully lacking.

The punt return team surely missed TA

For a team that was lacking on the pass rush front, NE sure put pressure on Goff all night…I watched Havenstein get ran over and Grob is a step slow.

Grob is not a LT he needs to be moved inside next year.

Mo Alexander has done his version of a Ballerina 2 weeks in a row now. Quit spinning in a circle and tackle the guy.

TruJO needs to be signed next year

The Rams D-line had every run stopped inside but when the back broke it outside they had no answer. This tells me this is an undisciplined D.

They need to draft a real OLB next year

Compact delivery, good arm not a gun. Throws intermediate pass well. Feet–in between frenetic and pro quick. Rams may have most unathletic OL in the league and the Saints went after Goff AND the OL. This game JG erratic with ball placement…made some great throws, but at times was scattershot.

I agree with all of that

I’ve been to that stadium and didn’t think it was anywhere near being considered a dump.

the stadium is fine. there’s nothing wrong with that stadium.

of course i don’t think there’s anything wrong the coliseum, so what do i know?

I agree Invader. I’m sure it has to do with the dollars but it sure comes across as the big boy version of “I want a new bike too”.

Never made it to STL to catch a game. The wife and I almost took a trip 1 year but decided on a different adventure…I kinda wish I made the trip because now it’s not gonna happen.

I was in San Diego while the Rams played Miami in LA and really had no desire to make the trip…maybe when they get the new stadium I’ll be more interested.

This post had to have been made after Green was injured and before the season started.

What a great call by this poster.

I was a little crushed when Green went down, he was having a fantastic pre-season and that team was loaded….then Warner exploded on the scene…fun time for a Rams fan.

Seems that TA is struggling with a chest injury and hasn’t practiced all week. Word I’m hearing is he may not play Sunday.

Means more Marquez and Cooper. My hope is they sprinkle a little Thomas in, I’m interested in this guy.

IDK…to me Oakland is Raider land..

Oh believe me, wv knows that, sanbagger.

As a long time 49’ers fan, wv is well aware of Oakland’s love of the Raiders.

And with his beloved team 1-10 and now 45 miles away in Santa Clara and the Raiders a Super Bowl contender, he senses the Frisco area switching their allegiance to the Silver and Black (note that I said ‘Frisco’. wv, like most San Franciscans, hates that. I get my digs in where I can).

That’s why he wants the Raiders to move. He knows putting an expansion team in Oakland will take a long time to approve. It will take longer still to field a winner. In the meantime local support will undoubtedly swing back to the 9’ers. Unlike the Raiders, an expansion team won’t be a threat to the 9’ers’ sovereignty in the bay area.

So, believe me, he cares little about fair play or justice for other cities that lost their team. He cares only about one thing, the 9’ers maintaining their hold over the greater San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose/Santa Clara metroplex.

Ahh…secret undertones…thanks for turning on the light.

You know, just last week when I learned there wasn’t a Santa Clause I thought I had unlocked the mysteries of the universe…now…mind blown.

I’m with you I was being goofy……..The Lakers are the NBA brand of LA…… I too want the Rams to be the only show in town….

If SD doesn’t work for the Chargers…..STL needs a team…..

St. Louisans appreciate the sentiment. Seriously, thanks.

    ===========

Cardinals should move back to St.Louis
    Chargers should stay in SD
Rams should be alone in LA
    Oakland should move to Vegas

Arizona and Oakland should get expansion
    teams.

    OK, next problem.

    w
    v

IDK…to me Oakland is Raider land..if only they could get a stadium deal done because really they have a much worse situation than the Chargers stadium wise.

    Cards back to STL…agree
    LA remains Rams…agree
    Chargers stay in SD…agree

    AZ and Vegas get expansion.

I generally agree, but I am disappointed in Tavon’ lack of production on punt returns this year. I was hoping for a better year on special teams.

    w
    v

He’s had a couple of good returns that have been called back due to the red flag syndrome. I guess if your returner is a bit of a jitterbug that happens.

Part of TA’s thing on returns is he’s lookin to break it vice run North and South and a cloud dust at 6 yards. He has to know there are times when that’s the best option, and I think he’s done better at that.

The big thing for me is do not fair catch the ball at the 5 yard line…I’m OK with the 10 now but let’s take our chances from the 5.

Good post…I absolutely concur. I know shocking.

It seems the Rams are running him less and using him as a decoy less this year…not sure why, because every D coordinator they play against states TA is a guy they have to know where he is on every play.

I also think Goff is gonna help TA out and he may get more involved with the deeper stuff which is where he should be. That in turn opens up the short stuff because the DB doesn’t know where he’s gonna go….as opposed to what we have seen where he mostly just hung around 5 yards of the LOS.

I still wouldn’t rule out Spanos getting a deal done to refurbish Mission Valley. He still owes 50 mil from a previous upgrade and as the article stated would owe 650 mil for a relocation fee.

Everybody knew the downtown proposal was gonna get shot down and THIS IS MY SPECULATION…..he could have been leveraging to get a deal done to fix MV. I’ve been to that stadium and didn’t think it was anywhere near being considered a dump. They have a very loyal fanbase and the support of all the casinos in the area.

I’m just sayin it isn’t a done deal yet and with January comin fast Spanos had to make his intentions known.

Upset players is important for focus and motivation. Tru Jo and a few others missed tackles….they slacked off….that simple

I think it was a little more than missed tackles and slacking off.

They had no answer for the TE’s
They were gashed by the running back
The screens pass was open all game
They allowed 3rd and long completions

I think Brees had a lot to do with getting NO in the correct play call to offset the call GW was putting the D in.

I believe in a team being flat and I do believe that was a big part of what happened but I also believe a great QB can get their team in the correct sets to expose the D.

I was wondering why the Rams got a flag on that play. Was watching the game at my neighbors house, and his game had the volume up. He has a man cave and we have 5 games going at a time….and since he is the owner of the cave he gets priority…so I watch and listen to a lot of Browns games.

    The Rams win.

That’s just what they do. They lose to 5 mediocre teams, then rise up and beat the best teams.

That is kinda their MO…but the Pats MO is to not allow the lesser teams to rise up against them.

I think Goff has a decent game against a suspect Pats D but it won’t be enough.

    Pats – 27
    Rams – 19

At this point I’m rather indifferent as to whether he stays or goes. On the one hand I see Jacks point, 5 losing seasons in a row is enough time to have your players and system installed.

On the other hand I really like a lot of the pieces in place including the additions of Weinke and Groh and GW at DC. Also, and most importantly, I don’t want to see a revolving door of Head Coaches and OC’s much like what happened to Bradford…which I believe hampered his development.

So I guess I’m good to go however it unfolds.
