PA RamParticipant
I already get targeted ads. I just bought a book yesterday on Amazon for coin magic and today I get ads on Facebook with DVDs on coin magic. That happens all thew time. The year I went to Hawaii I saw ads for Hawaii on every site I visited.
I don’t know how it all works but I think in this day and age you have to come to peace with the fact that there is no real privacy anymore.
Yes–it makes me angry. Yes–I think it’s wrong. Besides VPNs you have companies like Lifelock and others all making money by protecting your privacy. Who thought you’d have to pay for that? Is privacy not a right of freedom? The right is always arguing this and that about what rights are and aren’t. Apparently you have a right to own a gun but not a right to healthcare. What about privacy rights?
And I think people are too exhausted by the whole thing to really get worked up about it. They just assume that nothing is private anymore. They assume that at some point they’ll be hacked. Or that the government is watching them. Or that companies will sell their information. Trying to fight that battle seems impossible. I posted articles about this on Facebook and the response was….crickets. I get that about a lot of political things really but this should be non-partisan. Everyone should care–no matter what your party.
I thought about VPNs but I really do not want to pay for them and I don’t even trust them, really. Someone always has your information–even if it’s the VPN. And with all the sophisticated hackers today–if they want it–they’ll get it.
I can see all kinds of problems if, for example, some prospective employer buys the information and doesn’t like your political leanings. You may be pro-union. What about an insurance company who sees that you’ve been reading about different medical conditions?
In the future nothing will be private at all.
There are great things about the computer age–but there is also a downside.
We are paying with our privacy.

March 26, 2017 at 3:57 pm in reply to: Sanders and other progressives begin a push for single payer #66707PA RamParticipantIt’s so disheartening that the Democrats have to be pushed into single payer. It is such a no-brainer. Get behind it. Sell it. But then again–maybe it’s better if it sits in limbo–not attached to either party. Maybe if it doesn’t have a party “label” it has a better chance. Maybe it can be some negotiated ground. But of course the Republicans would NEVER go for this–would they? I mean–they couldn’t.
It’s a tough fight that people will have to demand at the grass roots level.
As for the Dems–I’m hearing that Mark Warner of Virginia is a favorite right now for the nomination in 2020. God help us all. It’s bad enough to fight one party. When you have to fight two?

PA RamParticipantYeah Putin is a hard right kind of guy. While it’s interesting to me that RT carries a guy like Thom Hartman, I don’t particularly trust RT any more than Fox.
By the way–an excellent book I just read:

I just lost track of it somewhere along the way. There are soooooo many shows now. I should try to pick up on it again. It was good.

Putin is cleaning up his end–his way.
Here–the intelligence committee is compromised by Nunes. They will stall until evidence can be buried or destroyed. This country is in big trouble.

March 24, 2017 at 12:29 pm in reply to: Billy asked about "Iron Fist". What other shows are you watching? #66632PA RamParticipantI’m in a show vacuum right now. I’m waiting for “Game of Thrones” or “Orange is the New Black” or something else new to excite me. I’ve been on a show search for awhile but haven’t had much luck. I’m watching “Riverdale” right now–as a guilty pleasure. It’s actually a pretty good show. In case you don’t know it’s a live action “Archies” show but apparently “Archie” has gotten a LOT darker. Betty has a bitch of a mom and a sister in a psych ward. Archie was having sex with Miss Grundy(a sexy miss Grundy), Veronica’s dad is in jail from some sort of fraud and her mother is sleeping with Archie’s dad. Jughead’s dad is an alcoholic and Jughead is the dark kid who lives wherever he can. And there’s a murder.
I grew up on “Archie’s” cartoons and comics so I’m getting a kick out of the show.

PA RamParticipantI heard it’s bad.
Actually the only one I really liked was “Daredevil”.
I didn’t finish “Jessica Jones” and I didn’t finish “Luke Cage” (although that was the second best one). I have no interest in “Iron Fist”. I may finish “Luke Cage” at some point.

PA RamParticipant“So the dream is gone.”
Yes. I think we should rename the Public House, “the Dream is gone.”
Most of our posts describe dream-crashing of one kind or another
Well, sure—THAT dream is gone. But I haven’t given up on building my own solar panel and becoming energy efficient and free from the electric company. First, I’ll have to find instructions on line for panels that can be made from things around the house-like duct tape and aluminum foil. And it has to be a 3 step process, of course.
If it’s any consolation–the dream was probably gone a long time ago–we just held out hope that it wasn’t. That’s not a problem anymore.

PA RamParticipantI gotta be honest. Right now I would vote for the most pro-corporate Democrat in the land if it would get Trump out of office.
This idiot is about to march us into war with North Korea and China and our only hope is that both of those countries just ignore Trump and dismiss him as a moron. He has a dunce for Secretary of State whose only real interest is negotiating oil contracts and who has no idea how to deal with the world–and who will only allow Fox News to follow.
Trump is unhinged–paranoid to a dangerous degree and pissing off enemies and allies alike.
No corporate Dem would even suggest cutting “Meals on Wheels” or other such programs. Cutting these little programs will lead to bigger disasters. No corporate Dem would just completely abolish the EPA and march the United States toward climate change at an accelerated speed.
There is not a more dangerous and unhinged leader in this country in my lifetime.
And the Republican party is doing its best to prop him up for fear it all comes crashing down on them AND that if they dare mess with him, they will destroy their own base of wackos they’ve spent years building.
We are not quite THREE months into this.
I just don’t see how we survive another 45 months of this insanity.

Turns out…yes (updated 3/16) #66258PA RamParticipantI have to say that I’m really impressed with what the Rams have done in free agency so far. I hope they get this center signed. But they are set up pretty well for the draft if they can get that done.
My only concern about the offensive line is the right side. I’m not sure about Havenstein at guard and Robinson at RT. I’m not sure that shouldn’t be reversed, but we’ll see. I’m sure they’ll sort that out during pre-season.

PA RamParticipantIt’s has nothing to do with keeping us safe–it’s just a giant money scam. There is no logic or reason here. It’s obscene. It’s kind of like the WALL he’s building. Not needed. Won’t really help with anything. Gonna cost a fortune. But he wants it.
AND….the Republicans are already crying about the deficit as they get ready to go into budget discussions. Gee—I wonder where they’ll cut.

That would be—insurance. Spreading the risk.
We can’t have any of that.

March 10, 2017 at 7:25 am in reply to: Rams cut Barnes, Sims, & Kendricks & trade Hayes…also Watts & Mason #66092PA RamParticipantBarnes doesn’t surprise me. They clearly need to upgrade the center spot. The others are a bit of a surprise but then this is pretty much a rebuild. They’re changing the defensive scheme and Wade knows who he wants. Now we’ll see who they target to get.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantI like what they’re doing in free agency. They made two key signings. I’d really like to see them upgrade the center position if possible and fill in other spots in the draft.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantI like it. They HAD to do something. I know they need receivers but if the line isn’t fixed it won’t matter and the wide receiver market is super expensive. They had to lock down the LT spot. Hopefully Robinson can make that move to guard. This guy is not a long term solution but he will do for now. I think they just couldn’t get it done with the receivers so they’ll look for bargains later. But offensive line was even a higher priority for now in my mind. Maybe this is a good start at fixing what has been an ongoing problem.

PA RamParticipantWell–you always have to wonder if he’s a one-year-wonder. He seems immature but he had a very good year last year. I still think the Rams are signing one of those Washington receivers–Garcon or Jackson. So either way–he’s gone from the Rams.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantInteresting but I’m not sure that you’d get anything back that would make the trade worth it. I would not take less than a 2nd round pick and I’m not sure you’d get that. I have a feeling he’ll be at corner for the Rams next year.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantThere is just too much money in the system–period. Whether you’re a millionaire or a billionaire–it doesn’t make much difference. The political system’s lifeblood is money. You will have owners–like the Koch brothers, or Wall Street bankers, or oilmen.
I’m not sure how you get out of this mess. You would need these people–the system itself–to fix itself. Not gonna happen.
Or you can vote in an honest guy to shine a light on it. You know–a guy who doesn’t need money anyway–like Trump, who will “drain the swamp”. People WANT this all cleaned up in general, I think. But the system is so corrupt–including the media, that even when some of them THINK a guy is someone who will clean it up–they’re just being conned.
A guy like Trump doesn’t even care if you know it. He’s more out in the open about it than anyone I’ve ever seen. So what? What are you going to do about it?
All the Russian oligarch money flows through Putin so he can take his piece and everyone knows it. That system is beyond repair, however. Who is going to do anything about it? No one.
Same here. They just haven’t started poisoning journalists or shooting opposition leaders in the street–yet.
But the parties themselves are becoming just like the Duma. They will accept any behavior out of fear. In Russia they fear for their lives. Over here–it’s the next election.
I heard how important it was to pass a healthcare bill by the Republicans–not for the health of the American people–but because the election was in 2018 and they need something.
I heard a Republican congressman saying(in not those words) that very thing yesterday.
2018 is coming.
But what about the health of Americans–making sure a good bill is passed?
2018 is coming.
It’s sickening.
But that’s where we are. That’s America today.
And whether a billionaire is the face of it–or just some charismatic face on the way to billions–the money that flows through it makes the calls.
This will not be fixed in my lifetime–if ever.
And that’s very sad.

PA RamParticipantAs long as the insurance companies interests come first–this will be crap. It was one of the problems Obama had and it will just get worse now. Neither party wants single payer and it’s the best answer.
In the meantime we get this.
But the new plan does get rid of the tax on health insurance CEOs making over 500,000. Guess who’s getting a raise?
And this is only the first step. They’ve admitted as much. It’s just “Phase 1”. It’s going to get worse. Much worse.
And, by the way–it’s taking Medicare and possibly VA health care with it.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantWell, it’s not good for the Republicans who have backed Trump at this point.
But yes–they will have control for 4 years no matter what happens.
I’m not sure that this isn’t something Trump just read on InfoWars and believed it. So it may be meaningless. But in any case I heard Steve King this morniing the radical rethug from Iowa and even he said that an investigation may be in order—and then he said it needs to go back to Hillary so she can be investigated. I don’t know for what, exactly. But the message seemed to be that the Dems were going down with them if the Republicans had to take the hit for any of this.
I have been doing a LOT of reading about Russia lately. I’ve been watching documentaries, I’m on my fourth book, and I’ve scanned numerous articles.
And through it all–as bad as things are here, I keep telling myself–at least it’s not Russia.
But I’m not so sure it isn’t becoming that. And that’s a terrifying thought.
We have a long way to go–but maybe not as long as it used to be.
