Rams In Trade Talks With Several Teams About Franchise CB Trumaine Johnson

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media is reporting that the Rams are in discussions with several teams about potentially trading franchised CB Trumaine Johnson.

Johnson just officially signed his franchise tender worth around $16.8 million fully guaranteed for the 2017 season. Although, this won’t prevent them from negotiating a long-term contract before the July deadline or trading him to another team.

Because Johnson receives a 20 percent increase on top of the franchise tag figure, he’s now the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

Given how much Johnson will make for the 2017 season and the fact that he basically can’t be franchised again, considering how much it would cost, andy team willing to trade for him would have to be prepared to sign him to a long-term deal.

Johnson, 27, is a former third-round pick of the Rams back in 2012. He played out his rookie contract with the Rams before being franchised back in February and made $13.952 million fully guaranteed under the tag.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing will free up $16.8 million of available cap space while creating no dead money.

In 2016, Johnson appeared in 14 games for the Rams and recorded 58 total tackles, one interception, one fumble recovery, and 12 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 28 overall cornerback out of 120 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding a potential deal

hmmm. i don’t see why a team would trade a draft pick for trujo when this draft is supposed to be loaded with cornerbacks.

Interesting but I’m not sure that you’d get anything back that would make the trade worth it. I would not take less than a 2nd round pick and I’m not sure you’d get that. I have a feeling he’ll be at corner for the Rams next year.

Maybe a team is one of those teams that feels they needs a veteran CB to get them over the hump, and Tru is that guy. Also, is it possible that there is talk, the team may be sending a first round pick next year, not this year. So, the trade is Tru goes for a 2018 first round pick. Just a thought. I’d take that. Not a strong draft for LT.

TruJo is not the best corner in the NFL so he does not deserve the highest salary, even for one year. I hope they do trade him, and I would take a third rounder. That’s where he was drafted, I would take that to avoid paying overpaying him with the franchise tender and then losing him next year for a third round compensation pick that will be later in the same round the following year.
