Take a look at where russia is on that chart. Also note countries like Saudi Arabia get their weapons from US corporations, etc

Aggregate spending tells one story, per capita defense spending tells another. Or defense spending compared to other parts of the federal budget for transportation, conservation, etc…

What is striking to me is the comparison to China. I would think their defense spending would be much larger, though who knows what the real number is for them.

Our defense spending is obscene but people don’t really question it because we are told this money has to be spent to keep us safe.

The number is actually much higher, if they include everything to do with actual military spending, regardless of department. It’s more than one trillion then.

We could easily slash 75% of its budget and still spend too much. Shift that money to education, infrastructure, health care, the environment, etc. instead, and keep it in the public sphere. No privatization. All public. Americans would absolutely love the results, but they’ll never get that chance. The power of Capital will prevent us doing what is best for Americans.

I read somewhere(http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/06/us-military-bases-around-the-world-119321 ) recently that the US has like 800 or so permanent military installations world wide. The next three countries combined have under 30 which I believe are Russia, England, France. Many of the us installations are depots or radar sites but not all. Sure, many are in the US – but not all or even most from what I understand. Add to that the largest naval fleet of air craft carriers which are mobile military bases and the rest of the fleet.

Nobody does peace time defense spending like the good old USA. The scare tactics work pretty well and seemingly always will.

It’s has nothing to do with keeping us safe–it’s just a giant money scam. There is no logic or reason here. It’s obscene. It’s kind of like the WALL he’s building. Not needed. Won’t really help with anything. Gonna cost a fortune. But he wants it.

AND….the Republicans are already crying about the deficit as they get ready to go into budget discussions. Gee—I wonder where they’ll cut.
