nittany ramModeratorNever thought that Darwin himself believed in Social Darwinism. But his concept of evolutionary change is easily hijacked by those who do. Twisted for their own purposes, etc.
There is a lot of controversy over Darwin’s views on what came to be known as Social Darwinism. Regardless of what he truly believed, we have to remember that he was a product of his time. He was not raised in isolation but in a society that had a deeply entrenched class system and believed unquestionably in the superiority of the white race.
nittany ramModeratorTotally off topic but I used to enjoy court room dramas. Is there a TV show you know of that portrayed criminal court proceedings fairly accurately?
——————-
Not that i know of. To be honest, if they were accurate,
they’d be incredibly boring and tedious. Yer basic everyday courtroom stuff
is usually really boring. The interesting stuff occurs in the jail, when the client and defendant talk off the record.w
vYeah, I figured as much.
nittany ramModeratorWell, apart from all the ‘dick sucking’ dialogue, the defendant
was supposed to be given ‘discovery’ (autopsy reports, police reports, lab reports, etc)
and apparently all he was given was the Indictment (Ie, the piece of paper telling him what he is charged with)So, the Defendant was just asking for what he is entitled to. When the lawyer said “I gave him everything i have” that is kindof a dead give away, that he didnt give him what he was
entitled to.The judge just should have asked the lawyer “What, exactly did you give the defendant?”
And if the lawyer hadnt gotten discovery and given it to the defendant, then the judge should have just ordered that, and continued the trial, and on to the next case.

Because without the inanimate object the mass killing wouldn’t happen.
Not true. Just takes a little more thought. Thought. Yes that is the murderer again.
The gun makes it easy. Without the gun it’s too complicated and therefore prohibitive for the majority of mass killers. No semiautomatics means there would be much fewer mass killings.

nittany ramModeratorIs Jared Goff as ready to start as Russell Wilson was as a rookie?
The “NFL Total Access” crew compares Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback Jared Goff and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Is Goff as ready to start as a rookie as Wilson was?
One of the guys says Goff is struggling? I haven’t heard that. I’m sure Goff is making rookie mistakes but from what I’ve read he’s about where you would expect a rookie to be thus far in his development. Struggling implies he’s doing worse than expected and I haven’t heard that from anyone.
June 21, 2016 at 2:27 pm in reply to: what is the definitive list of Rams worst qbs of all time #46761
nittany ramModeratorBefore you can come up with a list I think context has to be established first. You have to look at expectations.
There were high hopes for Bert Jones and Joe Namath (even though perhaps there shouldn’t have been). Those guys were brought in as the final ‘missing piece’ to get to a Super Bowl. The team was loaded at every position but just needed a solid vet QB to get over the hump. Both of those guys were too old and brittle.
Guys like Null don’t deserve to be on the list. There were no expectations for him. He was never expected to be a starter. He was simply unfortunate enough to be forced into action on a talentless team with no hope of success. He never had any chance. Of course he wasn’t a good QB, but there was never any reason to expect him to be, unlike Jones and Namath.
So my list would be limited to QBs who were drafted/acquired with the expectation to be good but busted instead. In no particular order…
Namath
Jones
Brock
Germaine
Long
Rypien
Bartkowski
Walsh
Banks
DilsApparently, the Rams used to like to try for quick (but cheap) fixes by bringing in QBs that were past their prime hoping to get one more good year out of them.
nittany ramModeratorSome of the muskets came from private citizens but many of the muskets came from the armories of individual states. The states maintained armories to supply the militias. By 1778, most of the continental army’s muskets were supplied by France.
nittany ramModeratorYou have a reasonable take on tbe subject, Maddy.
Also, I have heard it repeated that if a killer is going to kill, he doesn’t need a gun, and regulations and restrictions will be of no use. I don’t think tighter regulations will end all gun violence. But what if it reduces gun violence by some percentage? I think it is reasonable to expect that it woludlow
It is reasonable to expect that it would work. Why? Because tighter restrictions have worked in every country that has implemented them. Also, this idea that someone who wants to commit a mass killing can do so without a gun is ridiculous. The gun makes the mass killing easy. It would be nearly impossible to commit a mass killing like what happened in Orlando without a gun. Yeah, a bomb could be used, but the complexity of finding the materials, building it, placing it and then detonating it is prohibitive. If it was easy bombings would occur more frequently. Much easier to pull a trigger.

nittany ramModeratorI think Dryer means they are even more separated than they used to be. That’s a byproduct of the skinnier horn. They’ve also changed the curve of the horn to accommodate the new style helmets and facemasks. If the following pictures work, you can see a big difference between the current and classic horns. Note the classic horn has a wider curve around the ear hole. That looks much better than the current style IMO.

Enh. To me, the problem pales in comparison to the massive-massive-massive-destruction wreaked by the great assault-weapon-Corporate-Capitalizm.Ix-nay that whiny defeatist crap, young man.
True, the corporate destruction of the biosphere is a bigger issue than gun control but nearly every problem pales in comparison to that problem. That doesn’t mean we stop trying to fix them. That doesn’t mean we should give up.
AIDS is small potatoes compared to the destruction of the biosphere but I hope researchers don’t walk off the job in frustration…

nittany ramModeratorI don’t know which one is the worst, but religion as a whole is certainly an anchor holding back progress. I don’t know if a any sort of global ‘utopia’ is actually possible but I know it isn’t possible as long as religion exists.
We agree on that one, definitely.
I also don’t think “utopias” are possible. Perhaps they’re not even desirable. But I do believe we can do immensely better. Doing much better is the key for me. We have a ton of room between our current barbarism and that utopian high.
I’m reading a biography of the Romanovs right now, and judging from the norms of the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries — I’m up to 1740, roughly — we’ve already reduced a great deal of commonplace barbarism in the world. Obviously, we have tremendous work still ahead. But it gives me some hope for the future.
Well, I wish I had your optimism but I have no hope for mankind’s future. I see a toddler and I cringe when I think of the world he or she will inherit. I think humanity has two, maybe three generations left.

nittany ramModeratorCrime has actually fallen for decades — though mass shootings have increased. People should be LESS fearful than ever of most kinds of crime — but more fearful of those mass shootings.
That has to be stressed. WHAT people CLAIM to be afraid of is actually decreasing.
From an article posted earlier…
A recent study published by the Harvard Injury Control Research Center shows that the frequency of mass shooting is increasing over time. The researchers measured the increase by calculating the time between the occurrence of mass shootings. According to the research, the days separating mass shooting occurrence went from on average 200 days during the period of 1983 to 2011 to 64 days since 2011.
What is most alarming with mass shootings is the fact that this increasing trend is moving in the opposite direction of overall intentional homicide rates in the US, which decreased by almost 50% since 1993 and in Europe where intentional homicides decreased by 40% between 2003 and 2013.

nittany ramModeratorNittany,
Well said. You posted this while I was still writing, and you said it much better than I did:
Well, it depends on what is meant by gun control. If by gun control, you mean tougher gun laws, registration, licensing, restrictions on magazine size and the types of gun one can own, then I’m in favor of gun control.
If by gun control you mean making the possession of ANY gun illegal, then I’m not in favor of that either. I don’t think most people who are in favor of gun control are actually talking about that though. Most people just want some reasonable measures enacted to reduce gun violence ala Australia, Canada, etc.
Thanks, but I don’t know about ‘better’. I’ve enjoyed reading your posts since you’ve come back to us. You and I see eye to eye on a lot of things.

nittany ramModeratorI watched it , thought it was ridiculous . The GSOT got dinged for not having the TE a big part of the offense. Of course the Bolts had nothing remotely close the Faulk. Winslow was great but not Faulk great ! The Bolts didn’t go to or win a Super Bowl either. GSOT 2nd place yeah right.
Actually Faulk ran a lot of routes that were traditionally TE routes, so in that sense, the Rams did have a great TE.

nittany ramModeratorGun Shop Owner: AR-15’s Flying Off Shelves at $500 a Pop
By Nick Giampia Published June 15, 2016 PoliticsSince the Orlando nightclub shooting on Sunday, gun sales have rapidly increased throughout the United States.
Adventure Outdoors Owner Jay Wallace told Fox Business Network’s Stuart Varney that sales of AR-15s and other firearms have “really kicked up” since Sunday.
AR-15’s may look like military rifles but they are actually semi-automatic guns, which means they can only fire one round with each pull of the trigger. By contrast, military-style guns have the ability to fire multiple rounds with one pull of the trigger. The ‘AR’ in AR-15 actually stands for ArmaLite rifle, named after the company that developed it and does not stand for “assault rifle,” according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
Wallace claimed that he has sold more than 15 AR-15’s per hour and may know the reasons as to why there is such a rise in sales.
“[People] are afraid that the government is going to take [guns] away and there are folks that are in fear because of the times that we are living in today and those are two big reasons,” he said.
Wallace said some people buy the guns for profit gain as well.
“There are also those that feel that the guns are going to go up in value so they buy them for investment,” he said. “[AR-15s] start out around $500 and go up to $3,000,” he said
Wallace said the last time he had seen such a surge in gun sales was when President Obama was first elected into office.

nittany ramModeratorZooey,
Very true. There is no common ground on this issue between the disputants. Though a majority of Americans side with implementing gun control measures. It’s actually “popular.”
Indeed, even Bill O’Reilly, the biggest right wing bloviator this side of Rush Limbaugh is for tougher gun control laws now.
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/bill-oreilly-takes-stunning-stance-154449244.html
Poles consistently show that upwards of 80% of the population are for stricter gun regulations. Legislators are WAY out of touch with what the public wants on this issue.

nittany ramModeratorI’m not sure anything quite typifies what the Republicans have become,
more than the law they created barring scientific research.I mean….just pause…and think about that.
Does anything say “Republican” more than that?
And i own a gun.
w
vWhy fund research with a known political agenda? We already have enough of that nonsense occurring with global warming “research”.
Preventing research because the republicans and NRA might not like the results is their political agenda.
The NRA is afraid of research into gun violence because they know what it will reveal. And they know what the solution is. It’s the solution that Australia, Canada and other countries have already figured out.

nittany ramModeratorThe first casualty of man-made climate change?
Of course, it makes sense that PA Ram would vote for Hillary. If ocean levels rise he’s going to possess some prime beach front property there in Reading, PA.
Dr. Stein is by far the candidate most in-line with my beliefs although I don’t like it when she panders to the crystal-wearing, holistic anti-vaxxer, Gaia-worshiping segment of the Green Party. Unfortunately, it’s a big segment so she has to. That element has been the only reason I didn’t become a card-carrying member years ago.
nittany ramModeratorYet he is a registered DEMOCRAT. Oops.
I really appreciate everyone who posts here and all the contributions.
That said, don’t fucking do that. Just fucking don’t. Don’t play puerile politics days after the mass murder of 50 people.
There is no political party affiliation that makes any difference here.
The man had serious mental illness. The man may or may not have engaged in terrorism in addition to the hate crime it clearly was.
You know what doesn’t matter? What corporate fucking club he belonged to.
So can we please NOT?
If for no other reason than out of respect for the dead.
Respect for the dead demands we can’t say he is a registered democrat? I disagree. The democrats are using this to try to deny our 2nd Amendment right. You know it too. It was an act of terrorism. You know that too.
Why does it matter what party he was registered with? He obviously wasn’t against gun ownership. The motivation behind shooting all those people had nothing to do with political parties or gun rights. His motivation was homophobia ignited by extreme mental issues.
nittany ramModeratorBan the things? Good luck with that. We would just create a large and very violent black market for weapons.
I’m not sure what the answer is either. I constantly hear people say that banning guns or a certain type of gun would lead to a black market scenario as you describe. The ‘ban guns only the criminals will have guns’ hypothesis. Seems like a valid assumption on the surface, however it isn’t born out by available data…

nittany ramModeratorBut the Establishment, which claims to at least acknowledge Climate Change doesn’t realize Hillary has embraced fracking infrastructure at home and around the world and doing so requires a 30-50 year commitment to build the additional natural gas power plants and the thousands of miles of pipelines.
She supports fracking. She supports offshore drilling and she once supported the Keystone Pipeline. Her foundation accepts millions of dollars from the oil industry. She claims to care about climate change but wants to increase domestic drilling for oil and natural gas.
She has little credibility on environmental issues. Any concern for the environment she has seems to be purely politically motivated.
