nittany ramModeratorYeah I would agree with zn on that.
nittany ramModeratorFassel makes sense. Boras has to run the offense and Williams has to run the defense. Fassel deserves the honor given how well his special teams have played since he’s been with the Rams.
Of course, no way does Fassel remain HC beyond this season, unless the Rams win the remaining 3 games by a combined score of 150 to 0.
I reckon Fassel will return to his special teams duties next season under the new head coach.
The rest of the current coaches will likely be gone.
December 12, 2016 at 1:00 pm in reply to: Gurley: "It looked like a middle-school offense out there," #60761
nittany ramModeratorMy main interest in the article was that Gurley implied there are players that aren’t trying. That is what concerns me.
nittany ramModeratorThe Rams completely dominated the game. They exploded for 312 yards whereas the Falcons could barely eek out 282.
Sucks when your team outplays their opponent but still manages to find a way to lose.
nittany ramModeratorThere’s nothing wrong with the Rams offense that new coaches, receivers and o-line couldn’t fix.
Goff did ok considering…
nittany ramModeratorWithout Quinn the Mob Squad is the Meh Squad.
nittany ramModeratorWhat makes you think that Demoff’s job is in jeopardy?
nittany ramModeratorThis offense needs Mike Martz.
If they hire Vermiel to be the HC I’d gladly accept Martz as the OC.
nittany ramModeratorIf Fisher is fired I’ll hold out and see what coaches are making it known they are available and discuss my wishes then.
One reason I’m not on the ‘Fire Fisher’ bandwagon is because I haven’t really been impressed with the list of possible replacements that have been mentioned so far.
nittany ramModeratorThe Rams have the best punter and the best DT in the league. Maybe ever.
Well, at least that’s something, right?
December 7, 2016 at 7:01 am in reply to: Unless the Rams get good, their coach is fired PLASCHKE #60495
nittany ramModeratorThe Rams have yet to publicly announce or even comment upon the extension, and why do you think that is?
Well, Bill, I think it’s because Stan doesn’t feel the need to come out and talk to you.
He conducts his business. Media is media, and he doesn’t think you are as important as you think you are.
Plaschke has a good reputation. And I like him. But this is the same standard issue, tea leaf reading BS that we have seen from many of his inferiors in journalism.
There is no inside information here. He doesn’t even pretend that he has any. He is making it up. Telling us what he feels.
Okay. So now we know he is in the “I feel Fisher is bad and want him gone” camp.
Got it.
The LA press is tough. Tougher than the St. Louis press anyway.
I remember Plasche’s first column about the Rams after their return to LA. He basically said, “ok, LA didn’t ask for you to come back, so if you want us to care, you better win”.
Not that the sentiment isn’t true. It certainly is. But I doubt that the first articles written in the St. Louis Dispatch when the team moved there were as indifferent to borderline hostile, even though they also knew they were getting a team that had been losing for five straight seasons prior to their arrival.
nittany ramModeratorI don’t care if he’s back or not. I do want the OCs replaced. I want them to hire Norv Turner. Who knows if Turner even wants the job but that’s what I want.
If Fisher wins out to go 8-8, he’ll be back. Anything less than that makes it unlikely that he’ll be back.

nittany ramModeratorI think the Rams could win out.

nittany ramModeratorI have no idea if something that looks this bad, can bee quick-fixed.
w
vWell certainly nothing is going to get fixed this year. But I think the offense could be markedly better next year if….
-Goff takes the next step forward in his development.
-Gurley commits to getting his game back.
-The o-line improves. I think the o-line can go from among the worst to at least an average group over the offseason. It’s a possibility. I mean, they were kinda sorta average the year before and it’s the same group of guys so if they can go from middlin’ to terrible they ought to be able to go from terrible to middlin’. Plus, they are certainly going to address the o-line in Free Agency so the personnel should get a little better anyway.
Fix those three things while the defense remains at its current level and we’ll be talking playoffs again.
Note: I’m not saying any of the above will happen or is even likely too, although I do have a good feeling about Goff. I’m only saying that it could happen and if it did that would be enough to get to 10-6.
December 6, 2016 at 4:29 pm in reply to: informal poll: should the Patz even bother to show up? #60443
nittany ramModeratorThe defense has looked terrible against two of the best offenses. Now they face a third good offense. It aint gonna be pretty.
w
vI actually thought the D did an admirable job. I know the Pats were a little shorthanded but that’s life.
If the Rams O could have mounted any kind of attack this score would have been a lot closer…even though I realize they called off the dogs in the 4th, I still believe this to be true.
Yeah I was pretty happy with the way the defense played against the Pats sans that 43 yd TD run on 4th and 1. The defense got no help from the offense so they were on the field a lot but they played hard the entire game. They didn’t really wear down.
If the Rams had just a competent offense that would have been a close game.
nittany ramModeratorThe Rams win this week. Bank on it.
nittany ramModeratorIt is not really a new system. It is still a Jeff Fisher offense. All it is, play calling. You just switch OCs, with Fisher’s type of coach, is just being masked. Unless he has an experienced OC like Norv Turner, per say, I’ll say it again, you are just masking it with a Fisher guy, and he is running Fisher’s plays.
It is a new system. How different it is from the previous system I can’t say, but it is new.
I could be wrong but I don’t think Fisher has an offensive system that he uses wherever he goes. He has a style. And regardless if the system in place is based on a WCO, Coryell, Erhardt, etc system, the playcalling and overall strategy will reflect his style – which is to use the run to set up play action.
well one question i have is did they change the run blocking scheme?
i remember all this talk about using the zbs last year. did they switch back to strictly man blocking?
I don’t know, but Rich Gannon noted what he thought were problems with the blocking scheme when reviewing film in preparation for the Rams game that he did the color commentary for this season. Can’t recall which game it was. He said too often the scheme left defenders unblocked who would then disrupt the play. I don’t know how much stock to put in that though…

nittany ramModeratorthe playcalling and overall strategy will reflect his style – which is to use the run to set up play action
That sounds like a Norv Turner offense to me…strive for run/pass ratio of 50/50.
I actually think Turner would be a good fit with Fisher and wanted them to hire him when Cleveland let him go.
BTW…For the “I love Mike Martz” guys…Martz was an assistant coach under Turner.
Turner is a disciple of the Coryell system as was Martz. But Turner’s style is more balanced with the run:pass ratio as you note whereas Martz liked to feature the pass.
I would love to have Turner as the Rams’ OC.

nittany ramModeratorI say–give him 16 million next year and let’s go win the Superbowl!!!!!
Actually, 16 million dollars would only guarantee them an undefeated regular season based on your theory. 19 million dollars would be required to win the Superbowl.
16 million means the Rams would lose in the divisional round of the playoffs.
You’d like that wouldn’t ya? See the Rams go 16 – 0 only to lose in the first round of the playoffs… Look on with glee as the hope and excitement built up over the course of 16 straight victories cascades away like water through a burst dam.
Your hatred for the Rams and their fans has no limits, does it?
nittany ramModeratorActually, and unfortunately, Hekker is their best weapon. How about that 76 yard punt? That was more impressive in person than it would be on TV.
I had the same response to the 78-yarder against the Bills. You just wouldn’t get the sense of that on TV. On TV, a long punt is “Oh, cool.” In the stadium, it was just, “Holy ####!”
The Rams have to get it together and win a ring for Hekker’s sake.
The guy next to me: “Did he just kick that 80 yahds’?! He kicked that 80 friggin’ yahds’!
nittany ramModeratorCan you imagine is we had a Massey to go with Hekker???
If they had Hekker and Massey the Rams win by two touchdowns.
Even the Pats fans seated next to me conceded that point when I mentioned it.
nittany ramModeratorSeems to me its either personnel or zn’s ‘distractions lead to lack of cohesion’
or both.I dunno, but i ‘lean’ toward both. Which is bad.
w
vWell then why the hell doesn’t zn stop distracting the o-line?!
I mean, I know he is a Seahawks fan and therefore wants the Rams’ o-line to fail, but you would think in the interest of sportsmanship and fair play he wouldn’t interfere.
I guess I just grossly overestimated zn’s level of integrity.
nittany ramModeratorBut then the Patz were right, to defend the Rams you have to take away their best weapon, which is Goff.
Actually, and unfortunately, Hekker is their best weapon. How about that 76 yard punt? That was more impressive in person than it would be on TV.
What you saw in Goff was a 3rd game rookie against a smart, veteran defense. Not taking anything away from Hekker. But, we have to cut through the static to see what Goff can become. Even buried under the debris of that particular defensive gameplan, which was calculated to negate him.
Oh there was nothing about Goff’s performance that tells me he won’t be a great QB. That game was just Belichixx against a rookie QB. I expected that.
But I don’t know if I would call him their best weapon yet. Hekker on the other hand was able to reverse field position all on his own. Hate to think how many points the Pats might have scored without Hekker.

nittany ramModeratorCan’t remember where, but I either read or heard a report that some of the Rams came out of halftime bickering with each other…did you happen to notice this?
No, I didn’t notice. Seeing the game live has its benefits (you can see how coverages develop, etc) but you miss out on the details. Plus it’s not much fun watching the game surrounded by the enemy. Overall I much prefer watching the game on TV.
However, I think I will make a pilgrimage to the new stadium when it opens to see a game at some point. Maybe a bunch of us from the board can get together at the new stadium for a ‘Huddlefest’ sometime.
nittany ramModeratorDid you see any cheating? How about Bill stealing Fish’s challenge flag?
The only cheating I experienced was the Rams continuing to cheat me out of the satisfaction and contentment that comes with being the fan of a good football team. Ah, to have a reason to be arrogant when watching the Rams…
I saw those feelings expressed on the faces and in the conversation of the chowdah heads all around me so I know what it looks and sounds like. However, if it ever does happen for me I just hope it doesn’t make me seem so stupid.
PS. That is a cool gif, though.

nittany ramModeratorGoff truly looked like a rookie against Belichick’s defense. The Rams’ o-line didn’t play well and allowed too much pressure but even when they gave Goff enough time he often held the ball too long. The pocket awareness we saw from Goff was gone in this game but I think that was because he was confused by what he was seeing. His accuracy wasn’t great either. He also threw some nice passes that were dropped though.
Overall I thought the defense played pretty well considering they were on the road facing Tom Brady. The Rams offense gave them no help and put them in bad situations a few times.
At halftime the Patriots had a tribute to the 2001 team that “beat” the Rams in Super Bowl 34. They had a bunch of players from that team on hand and Bob Kraft gave a speech about how the Greatest Show on Turf was defeated by “The Greatest Team on Earth”. During the speech he implied the 2001 Rams were a collection of prima donnas whereas the Pats were a true ‘team’. He said something like only a team committed to hard work and blah, blah, blah, deserves to win the Super Bowl. I turned to my wife and said at a pitch loud enough for everyone around me to hear “by ‘dedicated to hard work’ he means ‘taping their opponents practices'”. The Pats fans around me got quiet for a second and glared at me and I figured I might be in for some trouble but they just let it go.
nittany ramModeratorThe Rams have 25 yards of offense at the end of the first half.
So glad I’m here.
