nittany ramModeratorAnother Nordic Model.
nittany ramModeratorI think the Scandinavian countries are capitalist with strong social safety nets.
nittany ramModeratorI thought McVay was slow to adjust to the 6-1 front the Bears used in the second half. Once he did, the offense started rolling.
Gurley looked rejuvenated.
Goff’s numbers don’t reflect how well he played, IMO. He made some beautiful throws, and his numbers would have looked pretty good if not for a muff of a deep sideline pass that he dropped in over two defenders, and a 53 yard TD bomb that was called back. It was poetic because Collinsworth had just mentioned how the Rams didn’t have a deep threat with Woods and Cooks inactive, then on his very next breath Reynolds went flying past the Bears defense. Goff was clutch down the stretch.
Defense was outstanding.
nittany ramModeratorAnd it is unclear to me whether the strong dislike for Trump extends into more votes for the Democrat. Are those people who really, really, really dislike Trump new voters? Or the ones who voted for Hillary anyway? The polls show a close race right now, with Biden, Sanders, or Warren all beating Trump by a slim percentage. Just as polls had Clinton favored by a slim percentage.
Polls show Trump losing to Sanders and Warren, but as was pointed out to me on FB, those are national polls. They don’t necessarily reflect what will happen in the electoral college. I have no doubt whoever runs against Trump will win the popular vote, but the electoral vote is the issue, as it was in the last election.
November 17, 2019 at 9:46 am in reply to: Obama warns democrats about moving too far to the left #108234nittany ramModeratorWe have a two party system but it’s not composed of Democrats and Republicans. They are just a subset of a single humongous party called the “Status Quo”.
The other is the itsy-witsy, teeny-weeny, party called the “Left”. That’s the one Obama was warning you about.
Like the rest of the Status Quo party, he hates the Left. No matter how much he or other members of the Status Quo party dislike their president, they hate the Left even more. Because as much as they complain about their president, their differences are largely superficial. They all believe that the best way to help the masses (if they even care about the masses) is by appeasing the rich. In this sense Obama, that liberal paragon, has more in common with Trump than with Bernie or AOC.
I’m really getting tired of centrists trying to tell us that they are legitimate counters to the current power structure.
nittany ramModeratorActually, we did run into Jason, but fortunately the Carrot Creature from “Lost in Space” was with us so Jason ran off crying like a wee girl…
nittany ramModeratorGood thing your other German Shepherd was with you to capture the moment on camera.
Actually the porcupine took the picture. Apparently there were no hard feelings.
nittany ramModeratorIf it was done before the election, have they followed up on that?
His lie count in his first 1000 days was more than 13,000.
That’s not a misprint. More than 13,000. No president has ever come within light years of that. I’d bet no other human has.
I don’t know if there’s been any follow-up. I have seen the 13000 lie count before.
My question is, can the “Trump Effect” work for any right-wing, populist, presidential candidate in the future, or was there something unique to Trump and/or the particular circumstances that exist at this moment in time that will be hard for future candidates to copy?
nittany ramModeratorWell, I’d like to see Scientists study why Democrat-voters are ok with voting for murderous Imperialists, election after election.
Wonder why no American Scientists wonder about ‘that’ ?
w
vThe study wasn’t a Dem vs Rep thing. It wasn’t about the voting habits of Republicans. It was about something very specific, ie Trump supporters. It wanted to find out why Trump supporters remain loyal despite gaffs and lies that would have sunk any other Republican candidate in history. This study was conducted before he was elected.
And there have been all sorts of studies that look at why people vote the way they do. I think what you’re really asking is, “Why Democrat-voters don’t know they are voting for murderous imperialists?”
Well, you already know the answer to that, Squeaky. 😉

I bought this book. I had zero interest in the Manson case, but this intrigued me. I know the title makes it look all ‘over-the-top’ and stupid, but I think it might be good. I dunno. Henceforth you will be known as ‘Squeaky Ram’.

This Podcast Will Kill YouYou Must Remember This did a 5 or 6 part series on The Manson Murders. You might ask why would a podcast about Hollywood do a docu-series on Charles Manson and his family? Well, it’s because of the connection to Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski. I’ve always been fascinated by the Manson family and I have to say that docu-series is the best on the subject that I’ve ever seen or heard.
nittany ramModeratorIf I believed in karma, I’d say the football gods have more than made up for the PI in last season’s NFC championship game.
Between injuries and bad calls, the Rams season is on the verge of ruin.
nittany ramModeratorWell, fix the o-line and the biggest problems with the offense go away.
Goff has some problems of his own (also fixable), but the best thing you could do for him is fix the o-line.
That can be done in a single offseason.
Whit said on Cowherd that he’d like to keep playing beyond this season.
Fix the o-line and this team is a contender again.
nittany ramModeratorA nice effort by the defense spoiled by an inept offense.
O-line is banged up and depleted, but that doesn’t explain everything that’s wrong with the offense.
Goff is constantly being pressured, but that doesn’t explain everything that’s wrong with Goff.
It’s the ninth game and the start of the playoff push…what are they saving Gurley for now? He should be getting 25 touches a game.
nittany ramModeratorWhat draws me to the left is my dislike of inequality, exclusion, etc.
I reject the pervasive idea that the rich are deserving of their wealth just as the poor are deserving of their lack of wealth, as if the factors that contribute to wealth or poverty are inherent in the person and not a product of an exclusionary system of institutionalized oppression, inequality, bigotry, etc.
Ultimately I want to see a government and an economic system that serves everyone equally. How that happens doesn’t matter to me, whether it’s through some form of socialism or an attenuated capitalist system with strong social protections.
Although it’s not exclusively a leftist principle, protecting the environment is another priority. I want to reverse climate change and protect the remaining wild areas of the planet. I want the creation of government agencies that are tasked with developing clean renewable energy sources and improved agriculture/crop technologies. I’d also like to see legislation and policies based on evidence and scientific principles instead of ideology.
Ok, so now this has moved from why I’m a leftist to a wish list (what’s a commie without a manifesto?) so I’ll end this here.

nittany ramModeratorThis is the Russian spy whale Hvaldimir. I know a few of his trainers. In this case the whale is outside the jurisdiction of the MMPA and it highlights just how much these animals bond to humans when they are brought under human care.

November 8, 2019 at 12:56 pm in reply to: Chargers, Lions better than their records; Bills, Rams are worse #107911nittany ramModeratorGil makes a good argument as to why this year’s Rams team is worse than last year’s team, but I don’t see an argument for why they aren’t as good as their 5-3 record.
nittany ramModeratorLos Angeles Chargers owner Dean Spanos has pushed back against a report the team would consider relocating to London.
“It’s total f–kin bulls–t,” Spanos told reporters Tuesday. “We’re not going to London. We’re not going anywhere. We’re playing in Los Angeles. This is our home, and this is where we are planning to be for a long f—king time. Period.”
Maybe.
But I remember when Kroenke and the NFL said the Rams were committed to staying in St Louis…
nittany ramModeratorPitt. is 5th in sacks, 2nd in qb hits, & 4th in sack percentage.
Thotz?
Might be a good time to get the running game going.
November 4, 2019 at 1:30 pm in reply to: rams 5-3 at the bye…how do you see them ending up & why #107745nittany ramModeratorI think 10-6 overall is about the best they can hope for without the dynamic version of Gurley they had in 2017 and 2018. Gurley’s abilities in the running and passing games are what made those offenses special. To be better than 10-6 would also require better play from the o-line. They really miss Saffold.
nittany ramModeratorAm i the only one who watches birds on this board? What the hell is wrong with you people.
You’re kidding, right?
You may not realize this but birding is my number one passion. When I lived in PA I was a member of the West Branch Bird Club and took part in breeding bird surveys and the christmas bird count for the Audubon Society.
Making fun of West Virginia and the people who live in it is only my number two passion.
Sooo…whatcha been reading?
Bake any good books lately?
nittany ramModeratorwants to provide poor people from Mexico and Central America to the American dream when we the poor in America
I’m not sure allowing poor immigrants into the country will drastically increase net CO2 emissions. They’re not going to be driving Hummers to their Madison Avenue offices as soon as they cross the border. They’re still going to be poor. But now they will be able to find a job that allows them
to send a little money home to their families. Who knows, millions of immigrants working in farm fields might even reduce net CO2. It allows the work to be done by hand instead of using gas burning machinery. You are right that we need to drastically reduce CO2 emissions now. But keep in mind, it’s the conservatives who want to maintain the status quo. Their plan isn’t realistic. Just the opposite. It completely dismisses the reality of climate change.

nittany ramModeratorI’d go with either Warren Beatty or Alan Alda.
nittany ramModeratorGould studied trilobites. I think that;s where he came up with the idea of punctuated equilibrium. In the fossil record of different varieties of trilobites, he noticed brief stretches of rapid morphological change (punctuated) followed by long periods where there was very little change (equilibrium). Evolution still followed Darwinian rules, it’s just the timing was different. Natural Selection was not about slow, incremental, changes over time. It occurred rapidly and then remained relatively static for long periods of time until something happened to restart the process like an extinction event.
October 30, 2019 at 8:45 pm in reply to: Bee friendly companies are getting the science of the crisis wrong #107585nittany ramModeratorGrass lawns in general aren’t good for biodiversity. Even if you let it grow, grass isn’t going to attract a lot of pollinators. Relatively speaking grass doesn’t support a diverse insect community.
Here’s a link to some native flowers you can plant in your yard to attract pollinators.
