So which what gets the wet dick in the ear?
Would that be the 2nd string punter? Samantha Bee didn’t make that clear in her report…
If you haven’t seen the Daily Show piece, then watch it…
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorExactly. I think this point has been lost in the Westbrooks versus Sam debate which I dislike because I think it’s an unnecessary frame.
Teams almost never add 3 guys be they starters and/or depth to ANY position, let alone a position of strength in any one draft unless they’re in complete rebuild mode. So, the idea that we could add 3 guys to what is already arguably the best DL in football is just…well, astonishing.
Worthy of that gif, even… LOL.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorI think maybe Coach Boo underestimated the amount of struggle Greg Robinson would have with NFL pass pro. He really needed to NOT be flex and just lock in.
But Coach Boo gets paid the big bucks because he knows about a million times more about OL coaching than me, so I’ll just have to trust that he’s got to take the heat if he’s wrong in making this call.

MackeyserModeratorYour prose resonates…
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorAgree. BOTH need to stay. With Donald, Sam and Westbrook, you’ve gotten THREE guys to add to a position of strength IN ONE DRAFT!!!
That’s crazy. If anyone had said that, I’d have said they were nuts, with out depth that’s impossible. So, you just cannot look past how rare and special that is.

MackeyserModeratorWell, as I posted in this thread: http://theramshuddle.com/topic/brief-2015-qb-class-breakdown/
Hogan from Stanford is more like Luck, but I’m with you on Hundley. I doubt he’s the favorite for the Heisman since Mariota is in that Read Option at Oregon that will put up sick numbers and he’s almost as fast as Vick with not quite the arm.
Mariota is Vick, in other words. So, if you want to try again with Vick and YES, some teams DO. They would LOVE to have a Vick clone in light of what Seattle has been able to do with Wilson. I mean, can you imagine a Vick with better decision making on the Seahawks? F’n scary. So, he’s GOING to make GMs drool and likely win the Heisman over Hundley who will put up numbers, but not crazy numbers you’re going to see in that Read Option.
That said, while Hundley is improving his decision making (he did throw some bad INTs), there’s just no question that in this offense, he’s as set up as Wilson was with Seattle and has better tools. With limited reps and time in the system, a guy like Hundley could really blossom into a top tier QB under Schotty with this team.

MackeyserModeratorThis is what I know.
2nd ACL tear to the same knee.
Timeline even by the most optimistic estimates put him OUT for the preseason next year. Which means that he’s going to need a full calendar year to rehab AT MINIMUM. That means no time to practice, no time with the 1s, no time getting in football shape, etc. That takes time, too, especially after being out for a year. And as we know, after ONLY a year, there is still no blood flow or nerves established there, yet.
Thus, it’s pretty clear to me that he’s better off doing the rehab for 18 months or so, by which time, the 2015 season will be ending and then start to make decisions.
He could rush the decision, sustain a 3rd injury and end his career, which as we saw could happen in a preseason game or as Darnell Dockett found out could just happen in practice, or he could really try to build it up and give himself a better shot at it.
As for Adrian Peterson, when he came back, those first few games back, that knee wasn’t fully right and AP later admitted that. He couldn’t fully feel it and it was 4-6 weeks into the season before it really started to feel like he could trust it. And that gels more with the timelines we know. Maybe he was just lucky. Hard to say. But he wasn’t fully healed by that first game of the season as opposed to Bradford. Just wanted to clear that up.

MackeyserModeratorWell, even though Sanchez looks reborn under Chip Kelly, I still wouldn’t do anything.
I’m still enamored with Hill now and Brett Hundley next season… Rams are ready to roll.

MackeyserModeratorYeah, I’m still very, very optimistic about this team with Shaun Hill under center.

MackeyserModeratorCan’t cut Reynolds. He’s a CORE Special Teamer. He’s part of what made our ST the #1 unit in the league. You don’t just dump a guy like that for a guy with wiggle. And I really like Trey Watts…

MackeyserModeratorNot to nitpick, but Shaun Hill is 34. He was born January 9, 1980.
Big difference between 34 and 39… ask any 39 year old…LOL.

St. Louis Rams’ projected roster
By Nick Wagonerhttp://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-rams/post/_/id/10663/st-louis-rams-projected-roster-5
Examining the St. Louis Rams’ roster:
(Note: WR Stedman Bailey is expected to make the team but is suspended for the first four games of the season and will not count on the initial 53-man roster.)
QUARTERBACKS (2)
Shaun Hill
Austin Davis
Garrett Gilbert Mack: Practice Squad. If something happens call him up, but we need the roster spot. I’ve looked and there’s nothing out there. I seriously doubt we add anyone. They don’t know the system, so they’d have to be pretty special and what special QB gets let loose? The devastating loss of quarterback Sam Bradford leaves the Rams with just the three players mentioned above on the roster. But let’s be real, the Rams aren’t likely to keep Davis and Gilbert on the roster and having Davis as the No. 2 is a questionable proposition in itself. It’s probably safe to expect the Rams to pursue a veteran backup for Hill meaning Gilbert is listed here more as a placeholder than a projection.
RUNNING BACKS (4) Mack: No change unless Trey Watts has another big game. I think he’s staking a claim and is already on the PS. He’d already be on the roster, but Reynolds is a core STer.
Zac Stacy
Benny Cunningham
Tre Mason
Chase ReynoldsIsaiah Pead is officially on injured reserve, leaving these four in good shape but the intriguing name here is Trey Watts. He performed well against Cleveland and will get another chance against Miami. The Rams carried five last year and if Watts has another strong outing and proves capable on special teams, he might elbow his way into the mix.
RECEIVERS (5) Mack: No change. I think Pettis is waived once Bailey comes back. Bad luck for him since he’d have better luck finding a job being waived now, but that’s the NFL.
Kenny Britt
Brian Quick
Tavon Austin
Chris Givens
Austin PettisWith Bailey suspended the first four weeks, the Rams could take a longer look at another wideout for the first quarter of the season but there isn’t one who has really emerged as worthy. Givens reminded many why he deserves to stick against the Browns but Pettis has been nearly invisible. Without Bailey, it stands to reason Pettis would stay but upon Bailey’s return, that could change.
TIGHT ENDS (4)
Jared Cook
Lance Kendricks
Cory Harkey
Justice Cunningham Mack: All along I’ve been in the Alex Bayer camp, but can’t deny that Cunningham is the better blocker on a run first team. Still, Bayer catches everything thrown his way…AS A ROOKIE… in a Schottenheimer offense… which isn’t normal. If they even TRY to let this kid go, he’ll be snapped up in a heartbeat, which is why I say…DON’T. You find a steal, KEEP HIM.The first three are probably pretty safe, but the Rams could have an intriguing competition for a potential fourth tight end if they opt to keep four. Cunningham vs. Alex Bayer continues to be one of the more interesting battles on the roster. Cunningham is the better blocker, while Bayer has shown more as a pass-catcher. It’s really difficult to determine which flavor the Rams prefer but I’m going back to Cunningham because of his value as a blocker on special teams.
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (9) Mack: No change. I trust Coach Boo whether he chooses Washington or Bond. I expect that Barrett Jones will be on IR.
Jake Long
Joe Barksdale
Scott Wells
Greg Robinson
Rodger Saffold
Davin Joseph
Brandon Washington
Tim Barnes
Mike PersonThe Rams have serious questions about their depth on the offensive line. Barrett Jones’ situation remains in flux and few of the backups have stood out. Washington finally got back to work against the Browns and played pretty well at left tackle. He can play inside and out so he pushes Travis Bond out for now. Some with the Rams like Bond, though, and he could still factor.
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (10)
Chris Long
Robert Quinn
William Hayes
Eugene Sims
Michael Brockers
Kendall Langford
Aaron Donald
Alex Carrington
Ethan Westbrooks
Michael Sam Mack: As others have noted, the current rules really emphasize the pass rush moreso than ever. With William Hayes’ health not proven and Carrington not showing up in games, the Rams can’t afford to let go of production. Westbrooks is the highest rated 4-3 DE in all of football according to PFF and Sam’s got 3 sacks, multiple hurries and enough production that the Rams will need that for our rotation.
This is the toughest decision on the roster right now. Westbrooks and Michael Sam have both done enough in camp and the preseason to stake a claim to a spot. Jeff Fisher has hinted at a different look in terms of roster composition this year and it’s not out of the realm of possibility they could keep both. It’s hard to project where they could chop elsewhere to create space right now. Quarterback is one possible solution but the Rams aren’t in position to go with just two given Bradford’s injury history. Carrington hasn’t done much in the preseason and I wonder how safe he is but with Brockers and Langford battling ankle issues, it seems the Rams need him right now. The other X factor here is Hayes’ health. He has practiced but still not appeared in a preseason game as he returns from offseason surgeries.LINEBACKERS (6) Mack: No change. I haven’t seen any other LB do anything to unseat these guys.
James Laurinaitis
Alec Ogletree
Jo-Lonn Dunbar
Ray-Ray Armstrong
Daren Bates
Phillip StewardBarring injury, it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which the first five don’t make it. But the sixth spot is more of a question mark. That spot is anybody’s guess. Steward stays there for now but one would think it comes down entirely to special teams.
CORNERBACKS (6)
Janoris Jenkins
Trumaine Johnson
Lamarcus Joyner
Brandon McGee
E.J. Gaines
Marcus Roberson Mack: I’m sorry, but how can you watch Greg Reid at maybe 5’9″ 190 in uniform take on a 245# FB, take him out without hesitation and not love that? He’s a sure tackler and not a DB to make a “business decision”. There’s no matador in this guy. I see him improving in coverage AND he’s already a little guy who makes the bigger guys wince a little. That’s the kind of guy I want on my team. I like Roberson, but after watching Reid play, I’ll be disappointed if he gets away.
OK, so we are taking the plunge and adding a sixth corner here which seems even more likely with Johnson battling a knee injury. But it’s not easy to choose one from the group of Roberson, Greg Reid and Darren Woodard. Roberson has flashed the most in coverage, Reid is the best tackler and Woodard is sort of the happy medium between the two. We’ll go with Roberson because he’s gotten the most opportunities, an indication the coaching staff likes his potential.SAFETIES (4) Mack: No change. I had hope Christian Bryant would show up, but his injury took longer and looks like he’s a PS guy at this point.
T.J. McDonald
Rodney McLeod
Maurice Alexander
Cody DavisI’ve teased a possible change here for a couple of weeks but hesitated because it’s been hard to figure out where the other roster spot will be allocated. But it’s time to make the move because none of the other safeties have really done much of anything to stand out. It’s possible that a player like Matt Daniels could get another shot because of special teams but the Rams would do so at the expense of a more talented player at another position. Plus, Lamarcus Joyner can play safety in a pinch.
SPECIALISTS (3) Mack: This is a fantastic trio. I wouldn’t want to change a thing.
Johnny Hekker
Greg Zuerlein
Jake McQuaideIt would take a serious injury to disturb this strong trio.

August 25, 2014 at 3:10 pm in reply to: for those who are arguing Rams shoulda drafted a qb high #5059MackeyserModeratorI dunno that I really liked any of the QBs in this draft. Any. So I don’t fault them for not drafting any until Gilbert.
I certainly wouldn’t trade who we have for any of the QBs who got drafted… ugh.
But after some distance and because I believe in Shaun Hill, I’m having difficulty getting too far into the weeds on discussions like this.
I truly think WITH Shaun Hill at QB we’ll be 5-0 before we face Seattle at home.
I mean, this is the type of stuff a team has to overcome to win the Lombardi… so… we overcome it.
I. STILL. THINK. IT. IS. OUR. YEAR.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorHill SLINGS it. I dunno what people are talking about that he doesn’t have an arm. He may not be able to throw it more than 50, but he routinely zips it in there on 30 yard passes with authoritay!

MackeyserModeratorExcept for that play where our franchise QB got taken out for the season…
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorI still think it’s our year. This year.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorWhat this means for Bradford and his agent after the dust settles is that if he wants to stick with the Rams and not be an March release, then he’ll have to renegotiate WAY down into the $2 Mil range. Not sure Condon’s going to want to do that for his client. Not that he’ll have much choice, but it’s so early.
At this point, I just want the Rams to win with Hill.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorOkay, so I see what you’re saying, TD. All of his salary became guaranteed under the CBA, presuming this rule wasn’t materially different than under the old CBA since Bradford’s contract is under the old CBA. I can see if it’s all guaranteed that the Rams would just keep him on IR. Damn, that’s a lot of money to just sit there all season, though…
http://overthecap.com/what-exactly-are-injury-settlements/
The CBA protects players who are injured performing football activities. Essentially if you are injured your salary is protected, but it is only protected to a point. Remember there are various extents of injuries that occur in the NFL. An ACL tear is devastating and will cause a player to miss the entire season. That is a major injury and the player will earn his entire Paragraph 5 salary for the year.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorTD, sportrac is saying something different. That his $17M contract would only hit for $7M, but it’d be only half this year because it’s after June 1st, so only $3.5M
How does his entire salary get guaranteed? And if so, are you sure that all of that counts against the cap? He may get it all (we talked about that for guys who get injured in OTAs and Pre-Season games who are UDFAs who reach injury settlements. Those UDFAs salaries don’t count against the cap, iirc, even though they only count the top 53, it still doesn’t register. Again, unless I’m misremembering. I could be wrong on this…
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorAll that is agents and pr flunkies and other shadow people just making noise.
None of that changes anything real.
It doesn’t change the Rams needs or desires, the Eagles price or Sanchez’s actual willingness.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorCutting them is a business decision. That doesn’t mean they can’t talk to him. Just means that it’s not right to carry that money if he can’t play. And… there’s no guarantee that he actually recovers in 12 months to be ready to play by the regular season NEXT SEASON, which puts next year’s roster in question as well.
Frankly, in cutting him, he’s likely on a 2 year rehab stint where he’ll have to really get it stronger and then try to come back to the league and SOMEONE will likely give him a chance. But I just can’t see the Rams carrying his salary this year out of loyalty when we may need it for injury/trade offers/surprise late cuts.
I mean, how often are we told that “football is a business”?
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorAs someone who lives in Central Florida, I can tell you definitively that lightning not only strikes twice, but if you’re not careful, a lot more often than that!!!
I’m still excited about the Rams and our prospects because Sam Bradford going down doesn’t do anything to diminish the capacity or capability of Shaun Hill who proved his ability to play with these players and in this offense this preseason.
If it takes a few wins for others to get excited, then so be it.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
MackeyserModeratorIf the line holds… which is funny because the weak link was Jake Long and that won’t be the case long… then Shaun Hill may just have a career year.
He’s got the best OL, best RB corps and best SET of WRs he’s ever had AND the ability to start as the starter from the beginning.
With a Defense that shouldn’t make him play from behind, he should have all the support he needs to be very good this year.
I think he could EASILY be a 90+ rated QB with 30TDs and about 12 INTs, give or take.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
August 24, 2014 at 8:26 pm in reply to: who should start? will they trade for someone? who? qb discussion #4908MackeyserModeratorLet it go.
Winston is a knucklehead. I live in Florida and even as he was winning the Heisman, the stories of him stealing things and committing assaults wouldn’t stop.
Marcus Mariota won’t get out of the top 3. Getting him will require an RGIII type trade. No dice.
Brent Hundley… Need to do more homework on him.
But even if we don’t get Sanchez NOW, he’s on a one year deal. If he plays and continues to play well, the Eagles won’t be able to afford him. If he doesn’t the Rams won’t want him. But if he’s essentially rehabbed in Philly, then HE’S the perfect guy to go and get as a starter in this system. I kinda get dizzy typing that because I’m just so used to thinking of Mark Sanchez as Mark “buttfumble” Sanchez and not this new guy…
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
August 24, 2014 at 7:12 pm in reply to: who should start? will they trade for someone? who? qb discussion #4879MackeyserModeratorMack, would you give a 4th next year for Sanchez or Hoyer to back up Hill and compete next year? Do you think either team would take that?
I’d do it.
I believe Austin Davis is probably not starter material and right now don’t expect him to be able to win many games with the Rams. I haven’t seen consistency from him.
I think Hill can start and win (maybe 10 games), but only on a team with a very good defense, special teams, running game and a couple big receivers who will bail him out. We might have that this year, but everything would have to come together.
Sanchez might be able to help them win some games.
Yes, I totally would do that. Sanchez wasn’t worth a ham sandwich prior to this off-season and now he’s a solid backup again who’s playing well enough to potentially compete for a starting job. His play in Philly has been…well, eye opening.
What may need to happen, however, is that the Rams may need to trade a DL to make that happen because of cap considerations. I don’t know what Sanchez’s cap number is, but we’re up against it and the Eagles are pretty sad on D. If Sanchez’s number is low, I could see them trading someone like Sims and a lower pick like a 5th which would REALLY help the Eagles while giving the Rams the depth they desperately need. But the cap is an issue as well.
Bottom line is that we may not be able to do anything because of the cap.
Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
