also he’ll be a pass rushing lb here instead of a defensive end. maybe that makes a difference?

    i think it’s not a bad move.

it could pay off. i mean he had 8 sacks last year without starting a game. so i think there’s potential there. he doesn’t need to perform like a number 3 pick for the rams.

he missed his rookie season with a torn acl. sophomore season was nothing much to write about. productive the next year. and then a limited role this year.

Quarterback Jared Goff wasn’t perfect and missed on more throws than usual due to his offensive line struggling to protect him, but he made enough big plays to win the game

yeah, i like that. he was up and down. but made some really good plays.

so here is how goff ranks according to various metrics.
    qb rating – 7th
    total qbr – 5th
    football outsiders – 5th
    pff – 5th

well i meant bad. as in good.

    Isnt that entering Faulk territory?

yeah. you’re talking about all-time great season for a running back territory over a 16 game season. the type of season that can get you votes for league mvp.

of course there’s still another half to play. but he’s on pace for sure.

it’s not just the yardage. it’s the yardage AND the touchdowns combined.

i am troubled by one thing though. he’s on pace for exactly 400 touches on the season… i don’t like seeing that number. they need to find spots where they can rest him. if he can finish the season at around 370 touches, i’d feel a lot better – especially with playoffs coming.

Yeah, its got weaknesses for sure. (and they might well derail it in the playoffs)
But its got quirky strengths too.
Its an odd defense. Not sure ive ever seen the like.

the way i see it their strength is in the spine. donald, suh, littleton, barron, joyner, and johnson.

their weakness is mainly on the perimeter. their corners and edge rushers.

so they’ve got a good base. but they’re so weak on the edges, that it could hurt them against a quality team.

I just kept thinking how much the Rams miss Kupp.

i’d say any of their three wrs actually. they are so dependent on 3 wr sets. they run them like what? 95% of the snaps?

Yeah, the Rams defense certainly have room to improve but what constitutes great defense might have to be redefined based on the new rules.

well, i look at this defense compared to its contemporaries.

and while they may be ranked 7th in total defense, their average yards per play is in the bottom half. so that concerns me.

and it won’t be any easier these next three games.

i do think they’re improving. that’s a very good offense in green bay. and they were coming off a bye week. mike mccarthy is a helluva coach. he had 2 weeks to prepare for this defense. aaron rodgers is the best qb of this generation.

just one question. can marcus get his head out of his ass? don’t mean to be rude. but i think he’s capable of being much better than he has been. i think he knows it too. hopefully, he can turn it around because he’s shown before how good he can be.

well. against rodgers he held his own. not lights out. but very efficient.

    first half of the season.

    qb rating – 112.5
    comp % – 67.6%
    yards – 2425
    yards per attempt – 9.6
    touchdowns – 17
    interceptions – 5

Goff outplayed Rodgers in an ‘away game’ environment.

    I’ll take it.

i don’t know that he exactly outplayed rodgers… but he definitely held his own. again. only goff’s second season in the same system. he’s 24 years old. and came from a college system about as raw as a qb could be entering the pros. so i think this was a good game from him. he had lots of pressure. and this is just me guessing. but he probably saw things pre-snap and post-snap that he had never seen before. he’ll continue to learn. far from a finished product. far far far. i mean look at what other qbs were doing at a similar age. patrick mahomes aside.

It would appear that everyone thinks Gurley did the right thing by staying out of the endzone at the end. Announcers, pundits, etc. etc. But I’m not so sure.

the chances of the packers coming back either way were very slim. but this is what would worry me the most. injuries. i don’t want to see a defensive players tweaking a muscle or snapping a ligament because they had to go back on the field. the chances of that happening on a kneel down are far less. look at what happened to will fuller when the game was completely out of reach in the texans game.

i think he did the right thing.

todd gurley at the halfway mark.

    800 yards rushing 11 tds 4.73 ypc
    351 yards receiving 4 tds 11.32 ypc

really coulda shoulda woulda had 12 rushing tds. but he did the right thing.

just wow. but it’s only half of a season, so it doesn’t mean squat. still. terrific start. now for the finish.

just got back and watched the fourth quarter.

well. the bye week makes a difference. green bay looked fired up at the beginning of the game. they had time to come up with a game plan against the rams. almost worked.

rams really miss cooper kupp. he makes those 3 wr sets really work. i like reynolds. but the rams lose something with kupp out.

donald. when he wasn’t sacking rodgers, he was constantly in his face. 10 sacks at the half. wow. and that’s after a slow start.

peters. the rams should not re-sign him. at this point. maybe he’s hurt. maybe he gets healthy and turns it around for the last 8 games. we’ll see.

gurley. coulda had 2 tds and kept him on pace to break the record. but unselfishly kneels down to run out time. how cool is that? smart unselfish player.

goff. no it wasn’t the greatest game. i think we’re becoming spoiled. still had a rating of 111.0 and ypa of 8.4. and it’s important to remember he’s only 24 years old…

Then, add the context of how he changes space second-most often of any back on downs when he’s not the ball carrier or targeted (as measured by how many defenders are on him and how close they stay to him). The idea behind this metric is to measure how related a player is to wins, and no running back — or any other offensive player who is not a quarterback — rates higher through seven weeks.

    very cool. and interesting.

Hali, who ranks first, is an edge rusher who doesn’t start at the snap surrounded by blockers

I wish they had put up the nearest DT who did anything close to that

yeah. he always seems to be fighting through multiple blockers.

he’s like wolverine. he’s short and stubby. but powerful and quick. hard for blockers to get their hands on him and slow him down.

Aaron Donald has totaled a league-high 47 total pressures through Week 7, the second-highest total for any defensive player in Weeks 1-7 in the PFF era (2006-Present).

Only Tamba Hali and his 54 pressures in 2013 rank ahead of Donald.

The dude’s a freak of nature.

and you know what’s really impressive about this stat?

the fact that he’s doing it at a time when the league is putting every freaking roadblock it can think of to slow down defensive players.

i mean just think about it. gurley and goff are putting up unreal numbers. but you expect numbers across the league to be going up in terms of offense.

donald is being handcuffed, and he’s still dominating. transcendent i tell ya. freaking transcendent.

If you hate the Rams so much, why don’t you move to Milwaukee?

    haha.

seriously though. last year his first 7 games compared to his last 8 games. his qb rating jumped 19.1 points. his passing tds jumped by 10. his ypa increased by 0.5 points.

if he could do that. and do it against guys like rodgers, brees, wilson, mahomes, wentz, stafford… and i know that qbs don’t actually go up against each other. but still. if he can do it against them and win…

    well… that would be interesting.

I agree, but, it was nothing like last year’s slump (games 5-7, Seattle, Jax, Aez).

So even his slumps are better this year.

no not even close. and last game he still had an efficient game. 127.4 rating and 8.4 ypa.

last year at this time (week 7) his rating was 90.3. he had a 59.9 completion percentage. 9 tds and 4 ints. 7.7 ypa. and then games 8-15 he just took off.

i don’t expect a similar jump this year from the first half to the second half. i mean that’d just be crazy right? but shoot. he just keeps getting better and better the more he plays.

Joyner’s doing what they’re asking and playing the deep part of the field. They like what he’s doing. Does that mean he comes back long term?

dunno. i think jj and littleton would be candidates before joyner. but don’t get me wrong. i like joyner. rams are gonna have to make some tough choices.

he’s the seventh highest graded safety by pff.

i don’t know. i don’t know what the big deal is.

playing in mcvay’s scheme enhances gurley’s abilities on the field. that’s why the rams signed him. to get the most out of goff, gurley, and the team as a whole.

    this is a good thing.

and it’s also true that gurley is a phenomenally talented player.

it was like the old debate. who’s better? emmitt or barry?

i don’t know. they were both great. do you downgrade emmitt because he plays in a great system with other great players? no. they were both great. and i’m perfectly fine with gurley given a leg up on other rbs cuz he plays in a superior system with superior players. that’s a good problem to have. if that means he’s a system rb then so be it.

    oh well.

The Rams running game didn’t really pick up until the 4th quarter. So it looks to me like they just chose to bang this one out.

and they didn’t have to wear gurley out either.

gurley only had 15 of the 35 carries. brown had 13.

    the number one rushing attack.

interesting to compare this one to the martz rams with faulk and warner.

not as explosive as that rams offense was. but that was probably unrealistic to expect. i mean the current rams’ receivers pale in comparison to bruce, holt, hakim, and proehl. and faulk’s receiving abilities – maybe the only current back who can compare is bell? maybe gurley can get there but as of now i think he’s just more limited in terms of the routes he can run. maybe i’m wrong on that.

but it’s the running game where the current rams might rival that of those rams. this offense can grind out wins. and it’s not just gurley. but brown too. i really hope that he sees the ball more going forward as he could take a load off gurley’s legs. and it’s not just the running backs. mcvay keeps defenses off balance with the sweeps that the receivers run. just a very dynamic rushing attack. i like it. i like the balance. and i’m hoping it serves them well as it can stretch defenses in ways that the gsot rams could not.

but also. this offense is not the finished product yet. it’ll be interesting to see how it evolves over the next few years. goff is currently 4 years younger than when warner took the helm in 1999. gurley is currently 2 years younger than when faulk was traded to the rams in 1999. running backs typically peak in their 6th year in the league. so i can only imagine what this offense will look like in 2 years – health permitting of course.

but also. how does mcvay evolve as a coach and playcaller? he’s still only 32 year old – 16 years younger than when martz took over as playcaller for the rams in 1999. my impression at this point is that mcvay has a better overall picture of how an offense should be run. and he’s very self-critical which should benefit him as teams find ways to slow the offense down. i’m not sure martz ever had that in him.

and also. hopefully, egos don’t get in the way like it did with martz, armey, and zygmunt. i don’t think it will. martz’s personality was divisive. mcvay seems to be a harmonizing force. more in line with vermeil.

i try not to get too ahead of myself. just try to enjoy the moment. but it’s hard. exciting times.

    well.

against the vikings, goff had a statement game to the rest of the world.

last week against the broncos, gurley had a statement game to the rest of the world.

so it only made sense that this week against the 49ers, donald had a statement game to the rest of the world. best player in the nfl.

2 impressive plays. the strip sack where he ripped the ball out of beathard’s hands with just his one hand. then the sack where he just pushed the olineman back and knocked beathard down with the flick of a wrist. so powerful. so strong.

he’s now got 8 sacks in just 7 games. 6 tfls??? so disruptive. so glad the rams re-signed him. and those 8 sacks have all come in the last 4 games.

oh. and i can’t forget littleton. blocked punt. 2 sacks. definitely a keeper. a playmaker. gotta get him locked up before he hits free agency.
