wow. havenstein looks like a slimmed down 320 lbs. not as sloppy as i thought he’d look.

not just seattle but tampa bay as well. i don’t believe they interviewed the victim at all. pretty disappointing but not the least bit surprising.

yeah it’d be cool if jackson took on a mentor role like stephen davis did for him.

well i’m only basing my rankings on production and experience but yeah. they all bring different elements to the receiving corps. hopefully they are all able to complement each other.

i don’t think he is as strong as lynch, but i would guess he has better short area quickness. i also believe he has better explosion than him. and while he is not as elusive as faulk. my guess is he has better power than him.

the one thing we don’t know is how that knee is going to heal. the doctors inspected it closely and came away encouraged. but. who knows? maybe it snaps next season, and he’s back on the table and under the knife again…

look. i don’t think he’ll ever be as good as faulk. that man’s talent was transcendent. as is peterson’s. those are special special athletes.

but do i think he can be as good as lynch or gore or jackson? yeah. i think those are realistic expectations. is that worth the number 10 pick? in this draft, i think it was. in other drafts. maybe not.

one thing about adrian peterson. i don’t know if this was talked about, but he did not have a straight acl tear. he actually tore both his acl AND mcl. so it would appear at first glance that his knee injury was more traumatic than gurley’s which was only an acl tear.

this makes peterson’s recovery all the more miraculous in my opinion. but i also take a little bit of comfort in that i don’t believe that gurley’s climb to recovery is quite so steep.

of course, bradford had a straight acl tear, and he reinjured it on a freak hit to the knee. so no one can predict these things.

frank gore had two acl surgeries in college. he’s gone on to have a productive nfl career with little disruption due to injury. i think he had hip surgery but has otherwise been relatively healthy. of course there’s no telling how much he lost physically due to those two knee surgeries.

    also.

i was thinking about gurley’s long speed. i’d venture to guess it’s around 4.5. not elite. but very solid. i estimate this partially based on his 100 meter time as a track and field star. he ran a 10.7 in the 100 meters. by comparison chris johnson ran a 10.38. adrian peterson ran a 10.26!!! i realize it’s hard to extrapolate based on this distance, but my point is that his long speed is probably not elite rather it is most likely very good. out of high school this one website listed gurley’s 40 time at a ridiculous 4.33. even if this is true (which i don’t think it is), it was done at 215 pounds. he’s added some weight since then, and i would expect his speed to go down some.

i don’t this is as important as his initial burst anyway. that’s what i’m really curious to know. it looks good on film, but it’d be nice to have a real number for comparison.

i would include austin in it. and i would rank it.

    britt
    bailey
    quick
    austin

britt is still the most consistent receiver in this unit, although i think bailey could easily jump to the top spot this year.

quick. depends on how he comes back from the injury. he could possibly overtake britt as well.

Derrick Mason didn’t have Quick, Austin, Bailey, Cook, & Britt to take balls from him either Invader.

    WV’s point is valid!

true. but i do think he can reach 900 yards. i think that’s reachable. even with the ball being spread around. he’s got the most reliable hands, and when foles needs a first down, i’m thinking he’ll be looking for bailey.

curious as to what you think of gurley. luxury pick? too risky? ceiling? floor?

i think a healthy gurley could potentially be the most complete back under a fisher coached team.

eddie george had the power. but he didn’t have the explosion.

chris johnson had the explosion. but he didn’t have the strength that george possessed.

steven jackson had power and explosion, but by the time fisher came, he was a shell of his former self.

i believe gurley will eventually have both those traits. maybe less power than eddie or steven. and less explosion than johnson. but he’ll have a good mix of the too. plus he can catch the ball, and he seems to have the requisite attitude to become a good blocker. eventually.

of course if his knee never heals, this will all be moot.

i also read about how some people feel he should be the workhorse. i don’t agree. i think he will be most effective with 250 carries. add in 40-50 receptions. and i think you get maximum effectiveness out of him. meaning you’ll get the most amount of explosive plays off him without subjecting him to unnecessary wear and tear. any more carries and i believe you get diminishing returns. mason should get the other 150 carries. and he should be effective. also giving the rams explosive plays. those two combined will be more effective than gurley handling the workload by himself.

i don’t know. derrick mason had 1000 yard seasons from 2001-2004 with the titans.

i think it can be done. as long as foles stays healthy.

i’m more interested in him catching passes on the field. third year. i wanna see 70 catches 900 yards.

it’s hard to see there being a clear cut opening for collins with the cowboys. not at the tackle spots. the only spot i could see is at the left guard spot.

it’s gonna be interesting. rams were interested in collins. they brought him in for a pre-draft visit. i don’t know how interested they were in him, but being he’s available as an undrafted free agent, you’d think the rams would at least take another look. unless have still have reservations based on the investigation.

it depends on the fans. it depends on if the fans care enough. my guess is the nfl will be able to sweep this under the rug.

if the fans announce their displeasure though. the league will do something about it.

also need to see if bailey and austin can make some strides. does greg robinson make strides. can brian quick come back healthy.

so many things need to happen… but the potential is there. i don’t think it was before.

i think the key is a top 5 rushing offense. if the rams can do that, then we see something closer to the 2013 foles than the 2014 version.

and then yeah. i’m thinking playoffs… maybe not anything like 1999. but yeah. playoffs.

in order for that to happen, the oline has to be fixed, gurley has to be healthy, and gurley has to live up to the hype.

    should be exciting.

great post isiah. and might i add.

gurley is not just a potentially special player. he’s a potentially special player who fits fisher’s vision. his style of football.

his offenses have been defined by the likes of eddie george, chris johnson, and to a lesser extent steven jackson. dare i say. gurley might bring elements of all three of those running backs to the table.

i’m dreaming of gurley in the backfield.

i want to say that while i like the ol prospects, i really only expect one starter from that group in year 1. havenstein at right tackle. center will come from one of their three prospects – jones, rhaney, or barnes. the right guard spot will be barksdale or some other free agent they sign or possibly jones.

the other rookies are developmental. no way they start them immediately unless they just absolutely knock he socks off the coaches, but that’s highly unlikely.

and again. i think the gurley pick was brilliant. they needed that type of talent on offense. absolutely needed it. now he just needs to fulfill his potential… no pressure…

I think they want Saffold at RG.

that sounds good. saffold and havenstein blowing open holes for mason and gurley.

center position is going to come from within too. we aren’t privy to that info, but they must feel confident with what they have there.

the big question then i guess is left guard.

but the oline is going along further than many of the experts seem to think. there’s a really solid nucleus forming there. robinson, saffold, and havenstein. there’s a lot of athleticism, power, and intangibles right there. the coaches and front office should be able to do enough development and roster churning to fill those two areas in. but it also comes down to chemistry. the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. and i think guys like robinson, saffold, and havenstein can affect that too. all are said to have good intangibles. leadership qualities. can they get this group to perform as a cohesive unit? they’re young, and they should all have something to prove. they’ll also be looking to get after defenses knowing they’ve got mason and gurley running behind them. they should be taking pride in that. how far can that take them?

yeah. at this point a lot of it is about development. that’s the best way they can catch up to seattle, san francisco, and arizona besides adding more talent. a lot of young players who aren’t close to reaching their potential.

contrast that to seattle and san francisco who seem to have reached a peak. not sure about arizona.

What do you mean “based on the CBA”. What kind of limitations are we talking about here?

The league sets a limit on how much teams can spend on undrafted FAs every year. I actually think it might be less that $100,000. That means that, in year one anyway, he will have to settle for next to nothing. Of course after this year he could end up getting a big-time FA contract.

If that’s true, he may sit the year.

He may have to anyway. He may be cleared this week, and he may be cleared after everybody has been in camp a while. And maybe he will be Aaron Hernandez’s roommate this time next year.

But why work for a plumber’s salary this year, and risk an ACL?

Presumably he would be eligible for FA next year in February when all the other FA hit the market.

I just don’t think he plays this year.

his agent says he plans on signing this year. but only after his name is cleared. my guess is if he sat out a year and then signed as a free agent he’d get a lot less than if he played a couple years and then signed a contract. it’s risky yeah. but my only guess is it’s about maximizing your earning power.

yeah, they talk a lot about the little things that gurley does. how he varies the frequency of steps when a defender comes. they talk about his receiving skills. they talk about his flexibility when running in traffic. good stuff.

and he seems to run with good pad level when he has to.

the one question waldman has is how gurley will do when those running lanes will inevitably be tighter in the pros. he had some pretty wide open creases in college. but he seems pretty sold on him.

If he’s cleared, there will be a damned land rush to get him…

Unfortunately, few teams will be able to offer him money based on the CBA, so it will be interesting how he and his team decide…

Again, looking around the league, I dunno of many better situations for him than the Rams… Running attack where he would could step in and start at ROT from Day 1. How many other franchises could offer that?

well i would certainly sell him on the fact that he’s got 2 promising young running backs to block for. a power running scheme. a right tackle or a right guard opening basically up for grabs.

he’ll want to go to a situation where he’s got the best chance for success so he can get a good contract when he’s up for free agency.

after all this offense is going to be built around the running game.

    Ah but.

To me, running game or not, if the qb ain’t clutch, you don;t get that much.

The classic Oakland Raiders were a running team too, but, Kenny “The Carnivorous Reptile of the Suborder Serpentes” Stabler was clutch, and that was all the difference.

Me? I keep whoever is clutch. Even if he’s a klutz for the other 3 1/2 quarters.

    ..

that sounds good. but my point still holds. the rams weren’t likely to know the answer to that question with a guy like hundley by the end of this season. they’ll likely have a better idea with a guy like mannion who played in a pro-style system.

just want to add one more thing. people talk about how gurley is a once in a decade type running back…

well. gurley had a teammate at georgia – freshman running back nick chubb.

some were whispering last year that he might be BETTER than gurley.

so… take that for what it’s worth. he put up some mighty impressive numbers behind the same line. early heisman candidate.

What do you (and others too) like about Gurley? I have my own opinions (I liked the pick instantly)…it’s just fun to hear.

    ..

i’ll leave film analysis to mack and others. mine is more of a cheerleader type response.

i always go back to steven jackson. he was the unquestioned talisman for the offense. he set a physical tone from the start. he was going to punish the defense. he was going to get up and he was going to do it again. he was relentless. but more than that he was also an explosive playmaker at his prime. he could bust long runs. he didn’t just grind out the tough yards. he made plays that could change the game in an instant.

even in his last year here. even when he was a shell of his former self. we all saw it. we saw that physicality. even if he could no longer produce the explosive plays. he provided that physicality.

but more than that. he was versatile. he was a very good receiver of the ball. he could go inside. he could go outside. there were so many ways steven could attack you. and an underrated skill of his was pass pro. he did the dirty work to help out his teammates. he realized the importance of giving up yourself for the team.

that’s what i believe gurley will bring to the table. he’s got it all. he can run inside. he can run outside. he can break a defenses will by churning out first downs. but equally by taking it to the house. his receiving skills are said to be top notch. he’s got big soft hands. he can run routes. he’s great after the catch.

and like mack said, i was pleased to hear him say pass protection was the first thing he needed to work on as a professional. he knows he can run. he knows he can catch. but he also recognizes that the nfl is a different game. it’s a passing league. and he needs to do his part to keep his qb clean.

he also protects the ball. everyone should watch the waldman piece on gurley. one of the first things he harps on is gurley’s fundamentals. how he holds the ball high and tight. the one thing that worries me about mason is his tendency to fumble the football. not with gurley. he’s got 10″ mitts. he takes care of the ball. he pays attention to the small things.

again. fixing the offensive line was important. not trying to minimize that. but maybe more important than that was establishing an identity. they not only got a blue chip playmaker. they established an identity for this offense in much the same way jackson did when he was here.

He was caught from behind as a Sophomore, but he was battling an ankle.

    As a Freshman? No.

    Now? Not likely.

Actually, AP is a very good description for when he’s right. Strong enough to truck people and fast enough to run right by people…IN TRAFFIC.

It’s just amazing to me to watch a DB or LB set up the angle and think they’ve got him and because of his speed, the defender just ends up chasing him.

    Just. Like. AP.

Plus, he’s very good at catching the ball and I LOVE that he understands that the FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS is learning Pass Pro.

This guy is going to be a super star in this league…

I know I’m banging the table hard for this guy, but I can’t help it…

He’s almost like Suh in this regard. The more tape I watch… the more I like about this kid…which if anyone knows me is unusual. It’s normally the other way around.

And don’t get me started about this kid’s stiff arm…

go on, mack. go on. i love reading this stuff.

i agree about the receiving skills. i think that will be a significant part of the rams offense. a nice outlet for foles to go to.

honestly, i think teams took seriously his threat to sit out if drafted. because then he would be eligible for the 2016 draft. so there was no point. and i’ve also read this situation could actually work out for collins. as a udfa, he will be eligible for restricted free agency earlier. he is also eligible to sign an extension earlier and recoup any money he may have lost.

the rams need to hedge their bets since foles is in his contract year. so best case scenario is he proves himself ready to start by the end of this season, and the rams don’t have to shell out a bunch of cash to keep foles. mannion offers the best chance of that happening.

after all this offense is going to be built around the running game.
