June 10, 2017 at 4:07 pm in reply to: Informal poll…take some guesses on the knowns & unknowns #69884
InvaderRamModeratori’ll concentrate on oline starters.
i think whitworth is a huge plus. one of the best left tackles in the game and a lot left in the tank (more than a lot think he does). he makes everyone else on the oline better. sullivan should be healthier and should be a plus although i preferred groy.
saffold and havenstein at guards. who knows? i guess we’ll find out. i do think whitworth makes saffold a better guard if he can stay healthy. i don’t see why havenstein can’t be a good guard. although i do know more will be expected of him under the kromer system.
grob/brown. i take it as a good sign that brown is beating out grob. looking on the bright side, at least they got a competition going on there. but still a big question mark.
InvaderRamModeratori’m guessing this offense will be unlike the washington offense in many ways.
Well if Hav is their ROG you have to figure they are going to do a power running scheme not zone.
.
running game will definitely be different. not just cuz of kromer but because i don’t think mcvay’s ever had a running back of gurley’s caliber.
but the passing game too. i’m anticipating that. like i said that si article was showing mcvay using atlanta film. and a lot of experts were comparing goff to ryan. now i don’t know how similar they actually are or if thats just media talk, but if they have a similar skillset i could see lafleur adding some things from that falcons offense.
i’m wondering what kinds of things they take from that passing game and fold that into mcvay’s scheme.
InvaderRamModeratorgoff should look good. he’s not under any pressure. we’ll see.
i used to be worried about ogletree but not anymore. maybe it was becoming a father. i don’t know. but he’s the leader of this defense. i hope they can extend him.
kupp. he’s gonna have 70 catches 900 yards this year. bank it.
grob is done. and i’m guessing brown will do well in kromer’s tackle friendly system.
InvaderRamModeratorsome combination of the bills running game with some of mcvay’s own concepts.
Don’t forget LaFleur, who comes in from Atlanta, where they had a top running game too (12th in attempts, 5th in yards).
Kromer prefers a power scheme so yes it will be interesting to see how McVay collaborates with him.
.
i did find it interesting that mcvay was using washington and atlanta film to explain some concepts in otas.
so i’m guessing not just running plays from atlanta but passing concepts as well.
sounds like mcvay wants this to be very much a collaborative effort. i’m guessing this offense will be unlike the washington offense in many ways.
InvaderRamModeratorso do we know what the rams running game will look like?
i’m assuming some combination of the bills running game with some of mcvay’s own concepts.
just curious if there’s any more info on that. i know there was mention of the inside zone mixed with some power schemes. i’ve looked online but haven’t found much.
InvaderRamModeratori like what i read about todd. he seems focused.
i’m thinking he has a good bounce back season.
June 7, 2017 at 10:06 pm in reply to: Would a Tavon Austin for Eric Decker trade make sense for Rams, Jets? #69805
InvaderRamModeratori like cooper, but i don’t think he makes this team. it’s thomas and spruce. unless spruce can’t stay healthy.
i’m having a hard time figuring out where cooper would even fit.
InvaderRamModeratori think the rams are set at safety. maybe even better than last year with alexander moving to his more natural position and joyner who maybe should have been starting over tj anyway.
also seeing some brian randolph in the ota galleries. wonder if it means anything or just random. either way he should be good depth.
InvaderRamModeratorhmmm. definitely something the rams should explore.
InvaderRamModeratorWith all the weapons on offense, and a bit of spreading it around, who will have a good year? They will all have 40 catches and 480 yrds. 😉
it could be something like that. at least for next year.
going forward though i think kupp could eventually be a high volume 1000 yard receiver in the slot and out wide.
just not in 2017.

InvaderRamModeratorhe’ll be a garcon type. maybe he can get that 70 catch 1000 yard season. once or maybe even a couple times in his career. but you shouldn’t count on it. this is gonna be a team effort in the passing game. that means woods, kupp, everett, higbee, austin… etc…
i’ll say this though. the professionalism with woods and kupp coming in. the wr corps has made an improvement just from that standpoint. no more mental mistakes.
May 24, 2017 at 7:07 pm in reply to: Donald not at OTAs…now morphed into, do you pay Donald & how much thread #69256
InvaderRamModeratoreven if by some chance they had to cut a player, i’d do it.
i don’t understand this salary cap stuff so i trust you guys when you say it isn’t necessary, but even if it was, i mean how many times do you come across a player of donald’s caliber at a position like his? he is the best of the best at a difficult position. maybe the third hardest position to fill outside of quarterback and defensive end?
you don’t let a player like that go.

InvaderRamModeratorrams can’t possibly screw this up can they?
InvaderRamModeratorit’s either tavon adapts or mcvay adapts.
mcvay will probably have to at the beginning but my guess is mcvay eventually phases him out.
InvaderRamModeratorwhat happened with jon toth? i’m guessing he wasn’t offered a contract?
InvaderRamModeratorlooking at their agility numbers and physical attributes groy seems to be the better athlete. but maybe toth compensates with intelligence and strength.
i was reading that toth might be dealing with some injury. might explain why he dropped. also might be a huge red flag. i won’t keep my hopes up.

InvaderRamModeratori’m gonna take this as a good sign. that they are comfortable enough with goff and mannion that they don’t feel the need to sign a romo or a cutler which would give them a solid starter but not someone who would be a long-term solution. or even a short-term upgrade over goff.
i take this as a sign that the qb whisperer likes what he sees in goff.
i’m gonna keep saying that to myself and hope it’s true.
InvaderRamModeratorToth (pronounced TOETH) is a bit of Renaissance Man, a mechanical engineering major and fluent Spanish-speaker who just happens to have been one of the top centers in college football the past couple of seasons.
so he’s a smart guy, eh?
InvaderRamModeratorwell i believe that 1999 rams championship team had warner, fletcher, farr, and jenkins – all undrafted and all major contributors to that team. i’m sure there were more than that.
rams need to hit on a couple in order to get an edge on the other teams.
InvaderRamModeratorhe sounds like a kromer type center. but that should be obvious i guess cuz they signed him. i’m hopeful for him as a developmental player.
i remember reading about him before the draft.
InvaderRamModeratori think kupp ends up being the best pick out of the rams’ draft. i don’t think it’ll even be close.
May 7, 2017 at 6:15 pm in reply to: Rams Impressed with Gurley's Offseason Conditioning & Practices #68468
InvaderRamModeratorthey made additions this offseason for sure.
but yeah. goff and gurley. the offense hinges on them doing well. otherwise, forget about it.
InvaderRamModeratorwent from grob to whitworth. britt, austin, quick, kendricks to woods, kupp, austin, everett. i mean that has to be an improvement. i can’t see how it won’t be.
InvaderRamModeratorcooper kupp against pac-12 teams for his career.
4 games
40 catches
716 yards
11 tdsthat’s 4 games…
against oregon last year, he had 15 receptions for 246 yards and 3 tds.
InvaderRamModeratori hope his comments about goff aren’t just lip service.
i can’t get a read on jared. i have no idea how that’s going to go.
but kupp and robert woods. the wr corps. just in terms of professionalism. has gone up many notches.
InvaderRamModeratorgot this quote from jamesjm over at the herd. i think it describes best how i feel about this guy. my closest comp for him i think is anquan boldin. bigger receiver. slow. but smart and competitive. excellent hands.
for the life of me I can’t shake the notion that this guy has what it takes.
I read the criticism’s of him… and admittedly some make sense to me, but I still can’t shake this notion that there’s something there, a bit hidden but often times glaringly apparent.
I mention Cooper because he’s a good example of what I ‘feel’… ‘sense’… ‘intuit’… ‘believe’… about several of the players on this current roster, (all positions), that, to me, have underachieved, (to varying degrees), for no apparent reason… not to me anyway.
THUS – the McVay era is fascinating for me. I don’t think the entire roster ‘has what it takes’ by any means… but there are enough, IMHO, to believe it far from silly to think the Ram’s ‘could’ make huge strides this year.
As I said earlier, I dunno what I’m hoping for this year…. but I do think, unlike in the past several years, there are currently more… .and I HATE to use this word but… ‘potentially’ good players than the Ram’s have had in some time.
We all know this.. there is 8-8 and then there is 8-8… can mean failure, can mean so-so, can mean improvement, can possibly mean HUGE improvement – (competitive in every game).
I try to come up with a number… meaning ‘how many’ need to stop underachieving and start over-achieving to make a noticeable difference in being competitive and unfortunately I can’t help thinking the number is rather high, and therefore not all that likely. Meaning a LOT of work, good drafting, remains.
At the same time… should all, or lets stay grounded and say ‘most’, (if that can be called grounded), DO step it up…. it’s not far-fetched for me to envision a winning season. – JamesJM
again. his agility drills were top end. not even taking into account his size 6’2″ 204 pounds. and i feel he could still add about 10 pounds on his frame without losing speed.
short shuttle – 4.08 seconds
3-cone – 6.75 secondscombine that with intelligence, toughness, competitiveness. the intangibles are off the charts.
InvaderRamModeratorBtw in terms of Kupp and slow 40 times, here’s some top receivers who ran slower than a 4.55:
Jerry Rice – 4.71
Anquan Boldin – 4.71
Larry Fitzgerald – 4.63
Cris Carter – 4.63
Brandon Lloyd – 4.62
T.J. Houshmandzadeh – 4.61
Steve Largent – 4.6
Antonio Brown – 4.57
Chad Johnson – 4.57
Brandon Marshall – 4.56
Hines Ward – 4.55If you look at that list, one thing becomes clear–the slower you are as a receiver, the better you are. So, I predict Kupp will be great.
…
others:
wes welker – 4.65s 40 30″ vert
jarvis landry – 4.77s 40 28.5″ vertdon’t have to be fast and explosive to be a good receiver.
InvaderRamModeratorHe forced a ridiculous 24 missed tackles in 2016 (the most in all of the FBS).
On average, Everett forced a missed tackle over once in every two receptions (56 in 108 catches) over the past three years.
While undersized at 6-foot-3 and 239 pounds, Everett gave up just 1 sack and 0 QB hits in 125 total pass-blocking reps between 2014 and 2016
i like reading those things. also in reading interviews with him online. when they ask him what he needs to improve on the most.
blocking.
i like reading that too.
on the huddle report, he’s ranked fourth AHEAD of njoku and engram.
boylhart compares him to dallas clark in his writeup. not bad.
Gerald Everett TE South Alabama
STRENGTHS
Gerald reminds me a lot former TE/H-back Dallas Clark. He has Velcro hands to catch the ball and a big catch radius. He has good run after the catch skills using quick steps to gain separation and stay on balance making it hard to tackle him and knock him off his routes. Gerald has excellent hand/eye coordination and strong hands to easily catch contested passes on third downs and in the red zone. He has the speed and toughness to split the safeties and catch the ball down the slot making him a touchdown nightmare once your team gets over the 50 yard line. He also has the talent to play in the slot on third downs and in the red zone could be used on the outside because of his talent to catch contested passes on slants and crossing routes. He is tough minded and the physical aspect of the game seems to bring out his best.CONCERNS
Gerald is not a three point stance, on the line of scrimmage blocking tight end. He is more of an H-back and although he does a good job blocking in space he struggles with techniques, leverage and lateral agility. That doesn’t mean that he can’t block or be a good blocker. It just means as an open space blocker he will have to improve to stay on the field and become more than just a specialty player or second Tight End.BOTTOM LINE
If Gerald improves his blocking he can become your starting pass catching Tight End/ H-Back depending on the offensive system. If he is selected by the right team with a good quarterback then the sky’s the limit for his ability to impact and become a core player for the team that selects him. When Dallas Clark came out in the draft the Colts had Payton Manning and Dallas was a perfect fit for that offense and had a big impact in the Colts going to the 2006 Super Bowl. Gerald in the right offense with the right quarterback could have the same impact but he has to improve his blocking in space to stay on the field or he’s just a specialty player.Drew Boylhart MAR.2017
InvaderRamModeratoryeah, the second video with the oregon and oregon state coaches raving about him is telling. he was a beast against pac-12 competition. and this was against defenses that were likely focused on him. especially impressive considering the talent surrounding him was probably less than ideal.
i’m gonna venture a guess and say he gets around 70 catches and 800 yards next season.
InvaderRamModeratorwell i don’t doubt that snead has a lot of say. i just find it interesting that they draft a fullback. that screams kromer to me. and while he may not have specifically singled out rogers as a pick, he might have told snead and mcvay that he needed a fullback for his running game. with snead’s job to try and find one that could satisfy both kromer and mcvay’s specifications.
