watkins talked a little about it too. all the different formations and route concepts is what i think he said.

so it probably has to do with where you line up on a certain play and what route you will be running. and maybe even understanding what the play is trying to accomplish?

i don’t know. i’m curious as to why his offense or his teaching methods are supposed to be so innovative.

greg roman offense. only thing i know about him is that he coached under harbaugh for many seasons from stanford to the niners. very run heavy offense.

it’s probably mostly a matter of learning the terminology. i can’t imagine the concepts being so vastly different. it’s probably just learning the verbiage.

I dont wanna alarm anyone but that sounds a lot like… Faulk.

which is why i think this guy has a shot at offensive roy.

although with watkins coming in i’m not so sure anymore. there is the possibility though that he beats out woods.

i think mcvay already said that goff will play into the second quarter next week. and most likely into the third quarter the third game against the chargers. so i’m excited. he didn’t look glaringly bad last night. in fact he looked solid from what little we saw of him.

mcvay said they needed to be more patient on that first play. i guess goff let go of that pass a little early? maybe some jitters? too hard to tell at this point, but next week should tell us a little more.

i agree with everyone that the defense looked sharp. and yes dallas played without their big stars. but so did los angeles. donald, quinn, and barron were all out. and shoot. they didn’t even allow a first down in the two series they did play. so they did their job.

lastly. this is the most exciting week of the offseason yet for me. they just traded for watkins. i think the skill position groups already looked decent. this just takes it up to another level. maybe not an elite level. but still. i used to think hey just don’t screw up on offense and grind out some wins. now i’m thinking maybe the offense can actually take some pressure off the defense and stress the other team. this guy is explosive. he’s going to make the other guys better. can’t wait for this week to get going. it’s been a long time since i’ve thought that.

The way Snead and McVay are constructing this offense, the QB could be the weakest link. And that won’t fly for long. Esp. with a (seemingly) loaded QB draft class.

it all hinges on goff. that part makes me nervous. although i do think he can be good enough. eventually. it just might take awhile.

mcvay will know by the end of the season though. i mean he won’t necessarily be there at the end of the season, but mcvay will have seen enough to think that he can eventually be there.

my question is if mcvay decides to switch directions does he draft a qb or does he sign cousins?

i think he’s a lot like steven jackson. lots of little minor injuries that slow him down, but for the most part, he’s able to play through them. i think the foot injury was a little fluky. so i think he’ll play around 14 games a season. maybe miss a couple games here and there. but the guy plays through injuries. and sometimes really well.

in terms of caliber. i think he’ll be to an odell beckham what steven jackson was to marshall faulk at running back. not quite at that elite level but close enough and a legit number one receiver. and like jackson, he’ll get nicked up. but he’ll play a solid number of games with very solid production.

i read somewhere that the second surgery is actually somewhat common.

dez bryant and julio jones had the same injury and ended up having second surgeries as well.

the second surgery wasn’t to correct anything structural. it was to alleviate pain. that’s my understanding from what i read anyway.

as far getting nicked up. i don’t know. he does seem to play with the injuries. i don’t know if that’s good or not. i don’t know if he needs to switch up his routine or something. like what bruce ended up doing when he had those hammy issues.

And Watkins is that age, too. So they have a young corps of talent right there.

    Really…wow.

The Rams did a LOT with the offense since January.

it’s funny. well not so funny considering the head coach is offensive minded. but still. if these moves work out, they really only will have to address the offensive line next offseason. most of the needs will actually lie on the defensive side. cornerback, outside linebacker, and defensive end. which is funny cuz this defense could be something else. providing donald returns of course.

To me it’s not about Goff because this is the first step in a continuing process. If he’s real good, I will want to see more later anyway, and if he struggles, I won’t make too much of it…he will have ups and downs on his way to being a consistent franchise qb. I mean I am interested in how Goff looks but there won’t be any “final judgments” on that for a while.

My thing is Gurley. If Gurley is “right” then a lot of other things fall into place more easily.

    ..

i pretty much fall into the same boat. i mean i want to see a good drive. even two. but i won’t make too much of it if it doesn’t happen.

i’m gonna wait until the end of the season to make any real judgments on goff at least.

I don’t think he’s Beckham, either. Or even Jones. But if he is in that next level of players, that’s good enough for me.

i agree he’s one tier below. but laram from the herd had this to say. i almost never see him be this effusive.

He wants the ball…he expects the ball…because he’s a playmaker!

Don’t watch him against scrubs like Sean Smith.

Go watch him retire Darrell Revis.

I sat there and watched a corner who I admired above all, who was as fundamentally sound as anyone get completely dismantled.

If Sammy can stay healthy dare I say he could surpass Ike in Rams lore.

    He’s that good!

No, think about it, it’s using resources. Tavon used 2015 style in an offense dominated by Watkins means more space for Tavon, which means more big plays.

i agree he’ll use him in spurts the way he was used in 2015. sure. he’s there. might as well. i’m talking about volume. why invest that much time into using him when he’s most likely gone in a year?

he’s going to use guys at his disposal sure. but he’s got to balance that with installing his system. invest in the guys who are going to be here past just this season. tavon’s saving grace is most of these guys are young and inexperienced. kupp and everett who are very much in mcvay’s plans are rookies. we don’t know how long it will take for them to adapt. with kupp i doubt it takes very long. they might very well be busts in which case mcvay will have to go to tavon.

He’s not going to get a lot of touches, maybe 4 or 5 a game – plus punt returns.

tavon in 2015 got 104 touches not including special teams. that’s 6.5 per game. i’m thinking maybe about 52 touches this season.

    Big plays. Touchdowns.

well. the big plays will be for watkins. for gurley. tds will be for watkins. gurley. higbee. everett.

    there’s only so many touches.

when they got watkins to open things up underneath. i believe it’s for gurley. woods. kupp. higbee. everett.

again. my only hesitation to fully invest in this prediction is that kupp, higbee, and everett are largely unproven. austin has at least done it. and watkins could get injured.

We all know if you use Tavon right, he’s a bigplay threat to defenses. Well with Watkins aboard now, if anything, that’s even more true. I think McVay would be crazy not to use him (2015 style) and take advantage of that.

    i could be wrong.

i still don’t see it happening. if he’s used right. in the right system. yes. but i don’t see logically why mcvay would bother trying to integrate austin into this offense when he’s brought in three guys this season for his offense. maybe if kupp struggles. but i doubt he struggles. and that’s leaving out everett, who i’m assuming he hand picked to fill the jordan reed role.

there’s only so many touches to go around especially when he has to fold gurley in as well.

the only way i see it happening is if kupp and everett struggle. and that could happen. they’re rookies.

i also want to clarify one thing about watkins’ injury history. i just read on turf show times. there was some bit about watkins’ having “season ending injury after season ending injury”.

let me clarify. he’s NEVER had a season ending injury.

his rookie year he played all 16 games. his second year. he had some injuries at the beginning involving the calf and ankle. and he had a little bit of a meltdown on the internet. but he recovered. and he finished strong that season. he was dominant. then before his third season even started, he broke a bone in his foot. had surgery. tried to come back. had a setback and was placed on injured reserve. but he came back to finish the season. he’s finished ALL THREE SEASONS he’s played. i think that’s important to note.

i should also add that jones’ stats in 2013 came before the surgery.

watkins’ stats in 2016 came AFTER the surgery. i think that makes a little bit of difference.

at best he’s the fourth receiver. at best. and mcvay likes tight ends. which puts him further down the pecking order. he’ll be around for at least this season. he can still do damage as a returner. and maybe can run the ball some. rams are being supportive of him, but that trade said pretty much everything.

i don’t think he’s on par with a beckham. i think he’s right below that. which is good. won’t have to pay top dollar to keep him.

but i think more importantly he complements the other guys well. he’ll open things up for the other receivers.

i’ve said it before, but i think ultimately, it’s going to be watkins and kupp. i like woods, but i think the rams have the potential for 2 1000 yards receivers in watkins and kupp. not this season. but for the future.

either way. all three should be getting lots of looks this season and hopefully for a lot longer. and that’s not even considering the tight end group which also has lots of potential.

watkins played last night for the bills. had 4 catches for 39 yards. i think i read that he had 3 alone in the first series. appears to be healthy and full go so far in preseason.

so at washington, mcvay had garcon, jackson, and reed.

he had other receivers, but i think that was his core.

now with the rams, he has watkins, woods, and everett.

right now it’s all just potential though with his second group. that first group has done it. and done it consistently. but on paper. man. they compare pretty favorably i would think. and that’s not even including kupp who i think ultimately should take on that garcon-type role. and i think he’ll be better than garcon honestly.

and oh yeah. they got gurley in the backfield.

and ryan asks in the podcast if this puts pressure on goff. yeah it does. if he can’t show anything, i expect the rams to move on from him quickly.

i think we’re just fine at left tackle. i know he’s old. but he’s been pretty productive the past couple years and no injuries of note during that time. i’m not worried there.

i am worried about center. a little bit. he hasn’t played much at all the past 2 years. so i think there’s legitimate reason to worry there.

another thing. this guy was playing in the run heavy buffalo offense. we were making arguments that woods would see a surge in production playing in the mcvay offense. i would have to say the same should apply to watkins. i’m liking this gamble.

which means it probably will flop.

Displaying his big-play capability, Watkins finished No. 3 with seven receptions of at least 40 yards, and he had 18 receptions of at least 20 yards. He also ended the year No. 6 in yards per reception at 17.5.

that’s legit. that was in 2015. desean averaged 19 yards per reception under mcvay.

also. and i think this is important. watkins is ONLY 1 DAY OLDER than kupp.

A lot of people are saying Watkins means Tavon is gone. That’s probably true, after this year (they can’t lose him this year because it would mean a 5 M cap hit). There’s a big however coming, but, my take all along was that it looked like McVay wanted Tavon to be DeSean west, and that that wasn’t going to work–Tavon is not a pure receiver in that mold.

But now? Tavon, for one year anyway, doesn’t have to be DeSean west. They have that now in Watkins. He can be Tavon 2015–back when he was a multiple hybrid player, not a pure receiver.

i wasn’t thinking this year. and i believe snead when he says he isn’t up for a trade ONLY because watkins hasn’t even signed a long term contract. IF watkins signs long-term, then tavon is gone. by trade or by cut.

and yeah. i immediately thought watkins plays the desean role. the explosive downfield threat. but more than that he could be the number one receiver desean isn’t. he brings more to the table than a desean in my opinion. IF he’s healthy.

and i think he can get back to being healthy. dez bryant had 2 foot surgeries i believe, and he came back. i think watkins can too.

also. and not trying to think too far into the future. let’s say goff is a bust. well next year they sign cousins, and he’s got a ready made supporting cast waiting for him in los angeles. possibly as good as what he had in washington.

i think kupp is legit. watkins, woods, and kupp could be scary.

i like the mix they have at tight end. i think hemingway could surprise.

and gurley. i hope last year was an aberration.

I dont see why people think this means Tavon is a goner. What if Watkins and Woods and Kupp and Gurley and the TE’s open up a lot of SPACE for Tavon to work in?

    Ay, what then?

We might see some electifying stuff.

    w
    v

you got watkins, woods, kupp, and then austin. i just don’t see a team paying him that much money to be the fourth receiver.

i like the watkins pick by the way. he could be a stud receiver if healthy. stud!

so i guess watkins is not just a number one, but he’ll be the guy to go deep like a desean jackson?

also tavon’s days are numbered. i don’t care what they say. they need to trade him.

i also hope he can stay healthy, and they sign him to a long term contract.
