It was a move that no one was expecting, but its clear Buffalo’s front office is going to shape this roster in the image they believe will bring sustained success. On Friday, a day after their preseason opener, the Bills made a blockbuster move sending former first-round pick Sammy Watkins to the Los Angeles Rams along with a 2018 sixth-round pick in exchange for CB E.J. Gaines and a second-round pick in next year’s draft.

Watkins, who has had a pair of foot surgeries to repair a Jones fracture, led the team in receptions Thursday night against the Vikings. He will be reunited in Los Angeles with Robert Woods and likely fill their number one receiver role.

Parting with Watkins was certainly a surprise, but the current front office did not draft the Clemson product and clearly has a different direction charted for the team’s receiving corps. Watkins appeared in 37 games for the Bills posting 153 catches, almost 2,500 yards and 17 touchdowns. Injuries have kept him out of 11 of the team’s last 32 games.

Gaines, 25, has been the starting right cornerback for the Rams since he was a rookie in 2014. He missed the 2015 season with a Lis franc foot injury, but returned in 2016 to make 10 starts and posted 56 tackles, seven pass breakups and a forced fumble.

A former PFWA All-Rookie team member, Gaines had a career-high 70 tackles in the 2014 season along with 14 pass breakups and a pair of interceptions. He will compete for a starting role in Buffalo’s secondary.

Buffalo also parted with their sixth-round pick in 2018 in exchange for a second round pick next spring. The Bills now have two picks in each of the first two rounds of the 2018 NFL draft.

Well, i would make that trade in a heartbeat.

Assuming all the medical reports on Watkins were encouraging.

Good Lord — an actual number One WR. In horns. How long has it been?

    Glory-fucking-Hallelujah.

I figure the roster bonus for 2017 has already been paid.
    .
We might only have him for 1 year, but then we would figure to get a high comp pick, round 3.

I’d be excited if I thought that the Rams were one good WR away from being competitive, but I don’t feel that they’re that close. Add in the fact hat Watkins has had problems staying healthy and that he’s a FA next season I’d rather have the 2nd round pick. Hopefully the Rams find a way to keep him or at least get a good comp pick in return. However, there is no denying that the Rams need help at WR. I’m hoping for the best. It’d be nice if the o-line can get it together.

yes, Rams better sign him for 2018, but I think Gaines is also a UFA for 2018… BTW Gaines also has an IR history too……

I’m not sold on this trade. Watkins has durability issues. Plus giving up a 2nd round pick? I’m not happy. But I will trust Rams brass. I am skeptical though.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk on NBC Sports, the Rams aren’t shopping Tavon Austin.
There was speculation Austin could be dealt after the Rams acquired Sammy Watkins from Buffalo on Friday, but multiple outlets have confirmed that isn’t the case. Obviously Watkins’ presence will mean fewer targets for Austin, whose fantasy appeal was flimsy to begin with. A glorified gadget player (despite ludicrous comparisons to DeSean Jackson), the former eighth overall pick ranked 123rd out of 154 qualified receivers in yards per reception last season. Interesting take from the Bill’s media

Bills media is expecting a low win total and think the Rams got Watkins much too cheap.

The Bill’s are in this to retool and rebuild.

They are stocking up on draft picks for next year.

They now have 2 Firsts, 2 Seconds, and 2 Thirds.

In fact, some say the Bills are setting themselves up to “tank” this year to get the highest pick possible (a new QB?).

The elephant in the room after the Sammy Watkins trade: What does this mean for Tavon Austin? Crazy to think, given the $40-plus million extension he was given less than a year ago. But it seems like he is being phased out of this offense. Rams have drafted seven wide receivers and tight ends the last two years, have signed another wideout (Robert Woods) and have traded for another (Watkins). Also, Austin’s dead cap drops from nearly $20M to $5M next year. He hasn’t been able to practice, either. Right now, looks like it’s Watkins, Woods and rookie Cooper Kupp, who they really like, in three-receiver sets.

So the Rams have – what? – about 13 WRs now?

Holy crap. I’m guessing this is Tavon’s last season in LA.

If Watkins can stay healthy and be the guy he was supposed to be – big IFs – this is an improvement. But good lord. Those WRs aren’t going to sleep well at night. Some heads are going to roll.

Well, unless they keep 13 receivers.

Snead says team still discussing the best time to get Watkins to LA. Will be in the next day or so, but he won’t be available vs. DAL.

Snead added he has been in contact with Watkins’ agent, who had relayed Watkins is glad to be a Ram.

Snead said he sees Watkins trade as a long-term decision. Adds out of respect for the player, has not yet engaged in contract discussions.

Snead called Watkins a good piece that will compliment the offense. Talked about having speed, and as many good weapons as possible.

Few notes from GM Snead, who just spoke to media at luncheon… Said team LA started dialogue with BUF in spring when 5th yr option declined

    Hacksaw compiled this:

WHAT BILLS FANS ARE SAYING ABOUT WATKINS TRADE

Who even cares. What a joke of a franchise.

Watkins and Matthews have been in the league the same number of years and…
Sammy has 153 catches for 2,459 yards and 17 TDs
Matthews has 225 catches for 2,673 yards and 19 TDs

First they took his 10 mil, now they take the top wideout.
2-4 win season. Hooray for Hinkie.

The Bills got the receiver with the better stats and a DB with similar stats to Darby..while adding picks…

I look at it completely different.
    Matthews is reliable and productive.

    Watkins wasn’t both of those.

i just don’t understand this. the only thing i can think is that they’re stockpiling picks to trade up next year. right?

very very poor return for Sammy Watkins

Serious question: Is this the beginning of a tank?

I pretty sure that trading young talent to stockpile picks is the definition of modern NFL tanking. See CLE

They certainly gutted the team’s offense in one stroke.

The beginning was trading down in the draft, bringing Tyrod back and letting Gilly walk.
Trading Watkins is the cherry on the tank sundae.

No. The writing was on the wall for Sammy when we didn’t pick up his option. You can’t give injury-prone players big contracts.

We finally have a GM that understands the value of draft picks.

    Yep. Embarrassing, actually.

We’re probably looking at a top 5 pick right now given how hard the schedule is and given how little talent we have at WR.

This team will be worse in 2017 as a result of these trades.

They’ve saved me about 4 hours a week through January, and countless dollars I otherwise might have given them.
    !@#$ing !@#$s.

    Jordan Matthews was getting cut.

Jordan Matthews + 3rd round pick = Ron Darby
Sammy Watkins = 2nd round pick + EJ Gaines

Suggesting Watkins is on the same level as Matthews is absurd.

Not boycotting or anything, but I am genuinely not excited at all for the season.

Who the hell is EJ Gaines?

I wonder how the vets feel about these moves? A guy like Kyle who was talked into coming back this season. Or a guy like Boldin, after all the talk about him being brought in to mentor Sammy.

Perhaps, but Sammy has the potential to be a BIG TIME player in this league

    I am bumming.

so i guess watkins is not just a number one, but he’ll be the guy to go deep like a desean jackson?

also tavon’s days are numbered. i don’t care what they say. they need to trade him.

i also hope he can stay healthy, and they sign him to a long term contract.

I dont see why people think this means Tavon is a goner. What if Watkins and Woods and Kupp and Gurley and the TE’s open up a lot of SPACE for Tavon to work in?

    Ay, what then?

We might see some electifying stuff.

you got watkins, woods, kupp, and then austin. i just don’t see a team paying him that much money to be the fourth receiver.

i like the watkins pick by the way. he could be a stud receiver if healthy. stud!
