Week 3 NFL defensive line rankings
By Austin Gayle • Sep 27, 2018
ebukam has been a disappointment so far.
InvaderRamModeratorIs it me, or does Gurley look bigger and tougher AND a just a tad slower this year?
he definitely looks stronger. i’m not sure about slower, but i hope not.
InvaderRamModeratorcan i just say that the both of you do a tremendous job on this board?
i salute you both.
InvaderRamModeratoron good morning football they said goff is the only player in nfl history to pass for more than 300 yards while maintaining a completion percentage of 75% for three straight games. a little arbitrary but still impressive.
also. on his perfect passer rating. it’s the 70th in the history of the nfl. also among those perfect passer ratings it’s number one in completions (tied), attempts, and passing yards.
that’s impressive. to maintain it over that many attempts which no one else has done. and every one of those plays was crucial for the rams to win. the vikings defense is struggling but it was rated number one last year.
i guess i didn’t realize just how impressive that rating was when put in context. although this is also with the new rules in place that protect qbs and wrs so there’s that to consider as well.
here’s the list.

InvaderRamModeratoroh. i should have posted here. he’s number one again. where he should be.
InvaderRamModeratorwhat i’m interested in is how much collaboration is involved in these plays?
goff and mcvay chest bumped on one of the tds. but how much input did other coaches have? for that matter how much input did goff have? or was it all mcvay?

InvaderRamModeratoraaron donald is back to being rated the number one dlineman according to pff.
next up is seattle. and you know he loves playing seattle! i hope he goes off!
i keep saying it. but i think donald is the one true transcendent player on this rams team. there are some other candidates. but i feel like this guy has already proven it to be true in the short time he’s played. he’s that good. i don’t know if i’ve seen a dlineman with his combination of strength, speed, and explosion. and it’s not just strength. like his legs are strong. or his chest. or his arms. and he is strong in those areas. but even his fingers are strong. insanely strong. if he gets his hands on you it’s over. you’re done. easily the best dlineman i’ve seen on the rams. but my fandom only goes back to 95.
but that’s also the reason why i want to see the defense do so well. moreso than the offense. it’s not just enough. for me at least. for donald to be merely a great player on a great team. i want donald to be on a great team with a great defense. or he could be like a reggie white. a team known for its offense with him being a singular larger than life figure on defense. but really. i want him to be on a defense that people write about decades from now.
anyway. i’m rambling…
InvaderRamModeratorit didn’t seem fluky. i mean when a qb is that accurate as consistently as goff was how fluky can it really be?
sometimes qbs just throw it up and let the receiver get it. but goff seemed to be putting it right where he wanted it with receivers in full stride. i guess we’ll see.
goff is now ranked #3 among all qbs by pff.
InvaderRamModeratorYou know what, I like the throwbacks, but I think I like the white on white (even with the little bit of gold) with the white horns better.
i agree. but without the gold. and if they could get a blue jersey without the gold. i think they’d be fine.
InvaderRamModeratorbut yeah. it’s premature. gotta wait this season and next before any comparisons can be made. and even then they might come crashing back down to earth and it won’t even matter.
InvaderRamModeratorfor it to not be totally outrageous to begin to compare this offense to the offense led by warner and faulk…
well it just tickles me to no end.
i’m giggling even as i write this post and for some time after.
it’ll be interesting to track this team’s progress over the next five years.
i’m hoping it’s more fun than the previous fifteen years.

InvaderRamModeratorrules were different back then.
that offense in this era with all the protection qbs enjoy?
not as impressed. i think that san diego game was more impressive.

InvaderRamModeratori thought the defense would be the one doing the bulk of the work. i thought goff would regress a bit. i was wrong.
at the quarter mark.
jared goff is now second in qb rating with 127.3.
second in ypa with 10.5.
on pace for 44 tds and 8 ints.todd gurley on pace for 1352 rushing yards 16 tds.
776 receiving yards 8 tds.
that’s 2128 yards from scrimmage.brandin cooks on pace for 1872 receiving yards and 4 tds.
robert woods on pace for 1368 receiving yards and 12 tds.
cooper kupp on pace for 1444 receiving yards and 16 tds.
just crazy.
InvaderRamModeratorThe throw: In hurry-up, Goff takes the shotgun snap, gets protection and finds Woods on a deep out-breaking route. The ball clears Pro Bowl corner Casey Heyward’s outstretched arm by no more than a foot or two, and hits the receiver less than a second before rookie Derwin James makes it over to help on the coverage.
The quarterback’s take: “It was Cover 2. That would be a throw—that’s the best example of one that would’ve been tougher last year, just in me understanding defenses and understanding what their intent is, and understanding, what’s Casey’s responsibility and what’s Derwin’s responsibility, and being able to manipulate that in the way that we did. And feeling confident in where to throw the ball and knowing Robert would be there. All of it comes back to being confident in the receiver and really trusting him.”
i liked that.
InvaderRamModeratorhmmm…
i hope the rams know what they’re doing.
InvaderRamModeratorHe needs some playoff wins to pass Bulger.
that’s fair. hopefully, he starts this season.
InvaderRamModeratorMan that Griffin story is so sad. I hope he gets back to normal.
i agree very sad. can’t help but think head injuries.
on the pass rush. every other unit has stepped up. now the edge rushers need to do their part to win this game. we’ll see how complete of a team the rams are or aren’t.
i’m getting very nervous.
InvaderRamModeratoragain. not that pff matters much. but he’s still the third highest rated defender overall and the second highest rated defensive lineman.

InvaderRamModeratorThere were times he winged it like Favre. (and got intercepted)
There were times he zinged it like Bulger. Perfect accuracy. Ropes.
There were times he floated it softly and accurately like Kurt.
And there were a few times he subtly moved in the pocket like Marino.i already think he’s better than bradford or bulger.
only one i’ve seen better in a rams uniform is warner. but who knows what i’ll be saying in a couple years. i need this season and a couple more before i can compare him to warner. well maybe this season and next.
but yeah. he can put zip on the ball. but he’s also got touch. as mcvay says he can change the launch point. things that bradford never seemed to master while with the rams. and his pocket presence is impressive and should only get better the more he plays. and he’s got those typewriter feet. constantly moving. just constant microadjustments that put him in the best position to get a throw off.
InvaderRamModeratorawesome as usual, ag.
thanks again.
if you haven’t checked it out, check it out, y’all.
InvaderRamModeratori wonder if at some point blythe is the rams’ starting center. not this season (hopefully) but maybe next year.
InvaderRamModeratori can only hope that the rams pass rush can get to cousins.
also interested to see how goff follows up his performance against the chargers.
InvaderRamModeratorRemember when the Rams couldnt run in the redzone? Well what is the secret? Is it the talent on the Oline? Gurley’s skill? I dont think so. I think its the scheme mainly (plus those other two things). By ‘scheme’ i mean i think the Defenses just dont know whats coming. They seem on their heels. A lot. So far.
And thats McVay. Mainly.i think kromer has done an excellent job with the oline.
and whitworth. even beyond just his skill i think his leadership has been huge. and then having that stability at left tackle has allowed saffold to stay at left guard where he’s been excellent as usual. and that just ripples on down to the rest of the last line.
not to dismiss mcvay’s impact but he’s only as good as the people around him.
InvaderRamModeratorI wish I had time to look that over. Tuesdays are bad for me. Interesting stuff.
this is something i’m going to track throughout the season. i’m curious to see where they rank at midseason and then obviously at the end of the season.
InvaderRamModeratoralso interesting. i just started looking through the past years’ drive stats.
ok. so net points per drive.
rams this year. so far. only 3 games in. are at 2.38 net points per drive.
next closest as far as i can tell unless i missed something is the 2007 new england patriots at 1.95 net points per drive. they also finished first in net yds/drive and net dsr that year. and yes. that’s the year they also finished 16-0.
the next closest team after that was the 2001 st louis rams with 1.28 net points per drive. they also finished first in all three categories that year.
so if this current rams team can keep that pace. uhhhh. wowsers. that would be something wouldn’t it?
of course the two teams i just mentioned were also upset in that year’s superbowl. sooo… welp.
but there’s no way they can sustain this. especially with peters and talib going down.
InvaderRamModeratorhere are various rankings for goff.
i don’t know how today’s game will affect rankings but here goes.
pff – 87.8 (4th best)
football outsiders – 250 (5th best)
passer rating – 111.0 (6th best)
total qbr – 78.1 (5th best)
still early in the season. i’ll be interested to see where he is after the vikings game and again at the halfway point.
but wow. good start. i just hope he keeps improving as the season goes on. he did start out hot last season the first three games and then slowed down a little before picking it back up.
on the other hand, beyond the numbers. and just by the eye test. he looks better. and that would make sense. other teams have a whole year’s worth of tape on goff in the mcvay offense. defenses should be better prepared. yet he’s still producing. if he can keep this up, people will have to give him more respect. not that it matters or anything.

InvaderRamModeratorand he’s back!
InvaderRamModeratori just don’t understand how a player can be as streaky as fitz.
InvaderRamModeratorJared Goff is the first @RamsNFL QB to…
✔️Throw for 350+ in consecutive games since @MarcBulger10 in 2004-05.
✔️Pass for 941 yards through first three games since @kurt13warner in 2001 (957).not as impressive now as it was back then.
but still good.
InvaderRamModeratorfifth in yards per game
seventh in completion percentage
third in ypa
sixth in passer rating
