2020 Fifth-Year Option Decision Tracker
https://www.profootballrumors.com/2019/04/2020-fifth-year-option-decision-tracker
Teams across the NFL have until May 2 to officially pick up their 2020 options on players who are entering the final year of their rookie contracts. These fifth-year options can only be exercised on first-round picks, and the salaries are determined by where players were drafted and what position they play.
If a player has his option exercised, his rookie contract will be extended by one year and he’ll be eligible for unrestricted free agency in 2021, after the conclusion of the 2020 season. If a player’s option is declined, he’ll be eligible to hit the open market a year earlier. Of course, if a 2016 first-rounder is no longer on his rookie contract, there will be no option to exercise or decline. We explained the intricacies of the fifth-year option in a PFR Glossary post, so you can read up on the specific details there.
Soon, we’ll learn the official salary figures for all 2020 fifth-year options. What we do know is that the option salaries for top 10 picks is equal to the transition tender at the player’s position during his fourth season. So, because the transition tag for quarterbacks this year was $22.783MM, we already know that Jared Goff and Carson Wentz‘s fifth-year option will be worth that amount.
With next month’s deadline looming, we’ll use the space below to track all the option decisions from around the league based on various reports and official announcements. Here are this season’s fifth-year option decisions so far:

One of a few 2016 first-round picks with fairly open-and-shut fifth-year option decisions, Jared Goff will soon see his rookie contract extended to 2020.
The Rams plan to pick up their two-time Pro Bowl quarterback’s fifth-year option, Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times writes. This will tie Goff to a $22.783MM 2020 salary.
Goff became extension-eligible this year, joining 2016 No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz in that regard. While the Eagles are hoping to extend Wentz this year, the Rams have not discussed a Goff re-up yet. Both teams have plenty of high-priced veterans, though the Rams have higher-profile deals on their payroll due to their 2018 extensions for Aaron Donald, Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks.
“Not on my mind at all,” Goff said, via Klein, of an extension. “I know the deal and understand that I hired an agent for that reason, and things always work out. You continue to play well, it will work itself out.”
It is possible the Rams ($5.4MM in cap space) could table Goff’s extension until after the 2019 season, but after ’19, Patrick Mahomes becomes eligible for a new deal. His next contract will raise the bar higher than Russell Wilson‘s did. While Goff has not accomplished what Mahomes has, from an individual perspective, he does have two Pro Bowl seasons and is only going into his age-25 campaign.
The 2016 No. 1 overall pick set new benchmarks with 4,688 passing yards and 32 touchdown throws last season, the yardage a near-1,000-yard spike from his 2017 figure. Sean McVay indicated recently he is pleased with Goff’s career track, despite the Los Angeles starter’s shaky Super Bowl outing.

As the Rams prepare for the NFL draft, The Times will examine their roster. Part 7 of 8: Quarterbacks.
Big money is eventually coming his way, but when Rams quarterback Jared Goff reported for offseason workouts last week, he said he was not thinking about his contract situation.
“Not on my mind at all,” said Goff, who is preparing for his fourth NFL season. “I know the deal and understand that I hired an agent for that reason, and things always work out. You continue to play well, it will work itself out.”
Sometime before the NFL’s May 3 deadline to exercise options, the Rams will employ their fifth-year option on Goff — the first pick in the 2016 NFL draft — guaranteeing him a 2020 salary of more than $20 million. And before he plays that season, he could receive a massive extension.
Goff is due to earn a base salary of $4.3 million this season and carries a salary cap number of $8.9 million, according to overthecap.com.
NFL teams have the option of adding a fifth year to first-round rookie contracts after a player’s third season. The fifth year is guaranteed for injury. Players selected with the first through 10th picks can earn a fifth-year salary that is the average of the 10 highest salaries at their position.
Goff and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, the No. 2 pick in the 2016 draft, are represented by the same firm. Both are expected to be impacted by the recent extension the Seattle Seahawks gave quarterback Russell Wilson. His four-year, $140-million extension included $107 million in guarantees.
Goff, who helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance this past season, enters the year with an experienced backup. Blake Bortles, seeking an opportunity to learn from coach Sean McVay, signed a one-year, $1-million contract with the Rams after the Jacksonville Jaguars released him in March.
Bortles passed for 103 touchdowns, with 75 interceptions, in five seasons with the Jaguars. During the 2017 season, he led them to the AFC championship game.
After he signed with the Rams, Bortles said he was looking forward to working with Goff. The quarterbacks have been friends for a few years, Goff said.
“I would imagine he’s kind of excited for the role and to be there and, hopefully, help me,” Goff said. “And I’m excited to continue to grow with him and work together.”
Under contract for 2019: Jared Goff ($8.9 million), Blake Bortles ($1 million), Brandon Allen ($645,000), John Wolford ($495,000).
Free agents: Sean Mannion, a third-round pick by the Rams in 2015, signed with the Minnesota Vikings. Bortles could not wait to join the Rams, and the team was happy to welcome a player who can play for a bargain rate because the Jaguars reportedly owed him $6.5 million.
Draft: Bortles is only expected to be with the Rams for one season, so McVay will possibly take a shot at a quarterback who can be groomed.
Roster decisions: The Rams will extend Goff at some point before or after the 2019 season. Wolford played in college at Wake Forest and most recently in the defunct Alliance of American Football.
