Whoa. Rams deal away their defensive captain months after signing him to a big contract.

    Wait , what

    Jason_OTC@Jason_OTC
#Rams will create $5.2M in cap room by trading Ogletree. #Giants take on $10M obligation for the year assuming no changes to the contract of course

FYI on #Rams and Alec Ogletree: Move is 50/50 about fit in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 defense and creating the financial flexibility to now re-tool for the 3-4 with players more in line with that defense.

Needless to say, on #Rams & Alec Ogletree trade: A lot of confidence being shown in Wade Phillips not just identifying better fits, but also to coaching them up like, in a hurry.

#Rams were 28th against the run last year. If you’re looking for reasons why they feel the need to re-tool and reconfigure defensively, look no further.

Certainly AO was a leader in that locker room and on the field. He also had an inconsistent season last year. Bottom line, Rams had WAY too much invested in the ILB position. Needed to use that money in other positions. And they’ve some draft capital in the process.

Alec Ogletree is the kind of flawed-but-useful player who made sense on his rookie deal and is totally overpriced on his second deal. Not every linebacker is gonna be Lavonte David, for crying out loud. But don’t pay them like they are!

Some insight into the Rams’ thinking on trading Alec Ogletree: They believe last year’s defense had a lot of 4-3 players who didn’t necessarily fit into Wade Phillips’ 3-4 scheme, Ogletree (and Robert Quinn, dealt to the Dolphins) among them. Signing Ogletree to an extension gave them down-the-road flexibility at that time, which they have now used to recoup draft picks.

The Alec Ogletree void for the Rams will come mostly in their locker room, which is why some players have expressed shock, even anger, through social media. Ogletree, a captain the last two years, had blossomed into a key emotional leader for them.

The Alec Ogletree trade to the Giants means there’s a pretty solid chance that ILB Mark Barron, a potential cap casualty, stays. The savings on Ogletree can be used on the Rams’ own free agents — namely, WR Sammy Watkins and CB Trumaine Johnson — and on remaking their defense to fit Wade Phillips’ scheme. In a larger sense, it’s about creating room for potential extensions with Aaron Donald, Todd Gurley and Jared Goff, who are each a year apart.

This also seems to be a huge “In Wade We Trust” move by the Rams. He turns 71 in June but it sure doesn’t seem like he’s heading into the sunset. They’re blowing up half their defense to rebuild it in his image.

Reaction from Rams players already has started, re: Ogletree. He was a captain and an emotional leader.

Rams are confident in their next wave of linebackers, specifically ILB Cory Littleton and OLBs Samson Ebukam and Matt Longacre, who in some ways outperformed the starters at those positions. But they no doubt need to add. Part of them is hopeful of getting a good one at No. 23.

I’m not so sure Barron is back next season. Good chance he gets released. Phillips needs players up front that better fit his 3/4

    Bruh this business is nuts!

Everything happens for a reason and GOD makes no mistake!! Can’t wait to get to the Big 🍎 and continue my career as NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANT!! #Blessed #GOGIANTS

Big picture, this move — all these moves — are largely about the Rams’ desire to have the defense be on par with the offense. Now take a minute to think about how crazy that sounds.

Classy guy. He and his wife navigated a pregnancy during the 2016 relocation and he took it all in stride and was a team leader.

What Vinny and Alden say makes sense to me.

I just look at that list of needs…and that’s a lot of LBs.

    I like Littleton, though.

I think the bigger surprise would have been standing pat. The defense was good but not great.

FYI on #Rams. Not a given Trumaine Johnson leaves. Just sayin’

So can they sign Donald, Joyner AND Tru?

I’d be a lot less nervous about this if they kept Tru.

rashaan evans is floating around in my head more and more.

he’d be an instant leader on this offense i think.

mayock and co kept talking about his intangibles. defends the run and pass and can blitz.

With the new cap space from Quinn and Tree and presumably also Tavon…yes IMO they can sign those 3 AND Watkins if they can reach a reasonable deal with him.

But I don’t see this as an issue of being less nervous.

With Peters, Joyner, J.Johnson, and signing Robey-Coleman as the nickel, plus either keeping Tru or drafting someone good…it’s not a matter of not being nervous…it’s beyond that, since with those guys they would instead have one of the best secondaries in the league.
