6 Reasons Why the Rams Should Move on From Sammy Watkins

    Joshua Hill

    https://www.downtownrams.com/single-post/2018/01/31/6-Reasons-Why-the-Rams-Should-Move-on-From-Sammy-Watkins

With the Super Bowl less than one week away, the NFL offseason is right around the corner. This means free agent frenzy and mock drafts are about to flood the internet. I know that this title will rub some fans the wrong way but hear me out! The Los Angeles Rams have a lot of difficult decisions coming this offseason with Trumaine Johnson, Sammy Watkins, Lamarcus Joyner, and Nickell Robey-Coleman being key Free Agents and the extension of Aaron Donald looming. At this point the Rams are projected to have about 50 million in salary cap. Here are 6 reasons why I believe the Rams should move on from Sammy Watkins.

1.) Sammy Watkins will command 15+ million in Free Agency.

Watkins is a great receiver that has shown that he has the ability to be a top wide receiver in the league. The problem is that he has been plagued with injuries throughout his short career and even though he stayed healthy this year, his injury history is still something to be weary of. Watkins opened up the Rams offense this year providing Todd Gurley with less 8 man boxes simply by his presence and is set to make 15+ million dollars in free agency, either by signing a long term deal or by getting the franchise tag. Although I do appreciate what Watkins provided the Rams this season I think that, with Sean McVay, the Rams can fill his spot with a cheaper option and still get the same, or close to the same result.

2.) Sean McVay’s offense spreads the ball around

One of the biggest aspects of McVays offense is that he spreads the ball around a lot. This means that there isn’t as much of a need for a prototypical #1 wide receiver. McVay proved this year that he is one of the more dangerous offensive minds and I think opposing teams know that they cannot put 8 in the box or he will make them pay with or without Sammy Watkins.

3.) The Rams can replace the deep threat at a fraction of the cost

There are a lot of wide receivers that the rams could pursue to replace Watkins. John Brown of Arizona, Paul Richardson of Seattle, Marqise Lee of Jacksonville or maybe even Martavis Bryant of Pittsburgh. All three of these players would probably cost somewhere between 5-7 million a year and all of them offer a vertical threat. That would free up 8-10 million for other signings.

4.) By not signing Watkins you can sign more impact players

In this article I am also assuming that the Rams move on from Tavon Austin, Robert Quinn, and Mark Barron. Those three would give the Rams another 20 million to play with. Add this to the 8-10 million saved from signing a receiver not named Watkins, that would give the Rams, let’s say, 29 million that they did not have before. With that 29 million alone the Rams can resign Trumaine Johnson for 15 million, Nickell Robey-Coleman for 4 million, and Lamarcus Joyner for 9-10 million leaving the Rams with around 43 million. With the remaining cap they can splurge and use it on Aqib Talib (or another top corner), maybe a Jordan Reed or Tyler Eifert for cheap, and they can replace Quinn with Ezekial Ansah and Barron with a draft pick. Oh yeah, and they can sign Donald to a long term deal.

5.) The Rams can build a better defense

As stated above, the Rams starting defense would be:

Safeties – Lamarcus Joyner and John Johnson
Cornerbacks – Trumaine Johnson and Aqib Talib
Inside Linebackers – Alec Ogletree and Draft Pick
Outside Linebackers – Samson Ebukam and Ezekial Ansah
Defensive Line – Aaron Donald, Dominique Easley and Michael Brockers

This would provide the rams an obvious upgrade in the secondary and solidifying the front seven. The draft would give you the ability to bring in solid depth and make the Rams Defense one of the best in the league.

6.) Goff can grow behind a more complete team

Probably the biggest improvement that can be gained is that Jared Goff could grow into an elite quarterback with the backing of one of the best defenses and Special teams as well as improving the offense as a whole. Sammy Watkins would be replaced with a cheaper outside receiver (I personally like Martavis Bryant), they could sign Jordan Reed, who has thrived in McVays offense, for a cheap price and he can provide Goff with a weapon he has never had, and in the draft the Rams now have the ability to focus on the offensive line and depth all around the team. The best way for Goff to grow is to give him a solid, all around team that can pick him up when he makes mistakes, which will happen. As Goff grows more confident and learns the nuances of the quarterback position in the NFL, he will get to the point where he can put the team on his back, but as of now he needs a little help.

Sign Watkins. We gave up this year’s 2nd round pick for him. If you don’t sign him, then we wasted that pick.

I agree we should sign Watkins, even if it is the Franchise tag.

I think he will be more on the same page with Goff with a full off season / training camp. Plus, I think he’s a good influence on the younger kids.

Plus, I think he wants to be here and can erupt as the #1 receiver we haven’t had in forever and at the same time make Gurley that much more effective.

I don’t mind them using the franchise tag on Watkins. Personally I would offer him $12 million/yr. If I couldn’t sign him, I would live with the 3rd round comp pick.

I dunno. But i trust Mc-Snead to know what he’s worth and act accordingly.

Sammy Watkins was asked point blank during the season about chasing his next contract.

He said money won’t drive me, I have enough money.

I believe him and feel IF the Rams come to him with a reasonable contract and promise him more involvement in the offense…he will sign.

Money will NOT be the driving factor IMO

    Found the article:

HOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Sammy Watkins realizes the size of his next NFL contract depends partly on his numbers for the Los Angeles Rams this season.

The receiver insists he’s more interested in the numbers in the Rams’ win column.

“No, I think I’ve got enough money,” Watkins said with a grin Wednesday. “For me, I just want to have fun and ball. I want to be a part of this team. It’s a great team. I know where they’re about to be at with Coach (Sean) McVay and his staff, and I just want to be a part and make plays, just score touchdowns and be a part of it.”

Watkins acknowledges he has been “frustrated” about his relatively small role for Los Angeles (3-2), which gave up a second-round pick to acquire the speedy pass-catcher from Buffalo during the preseason. But Watkins insists he doesn’t feel forgotten by Jared Goff and McVay, who have struggled to get the ball to Watkins early.

Watkins has 14 catches for 211 yards and two TDs in his first five games with the Rams. He failed to make a reception against Seattle last Sunday, going without a catch for just the second time in his four-year, 42-game NFL career.

“I don’t know a wide receiver that’s not frustrated throughout the game if you’re not getting the ball, but that’s the game,” Watkins said. “Each week, it could change. They had certain coverage that took me away, and that’s part of the game.”

But Watkins expressed some of his frustrations on social media after the Rams’ narrow loss by responding to tweets from retired Rams receiver Torry Holt, who questioned why Watkins wasn’t more involved.

“Something gotta be going on,” Watkins tweeted, along with an emoji of a face with the mouth zippered shut.

Watkins’ tweets led to a conversation with McVay, and both parties came out of it publicly happy.

“Sammy is a player that wants to be involved,” McVay said. “I really respect the way Sammy handled our conversation, in terms of taking the accountability to know that it’s about snap-in and snap-out (readiness), and really the tape is what tells the story. Sometimes when you don’t get your number targeted, it can be a little bit misleading, and what I appreciate about Sammy is I think he took it the right way.”

Watkins has just 14 catches, but the number that should concern Watkins more is 20 — the number of times he has been targeted by Goff and McVay’s offense in five games, including just four times on Goff’s 47 passes against Seattle. That’s a tiny number for a playmaking receiver expecting to put up significant stats in the final year of his rookie contract.

After the game, Watkins thought he had been open regularly against Seattle. After watching tape, he revised his opinion.

“They had certain coverage that took me away, and that’s part of the game,” Watkins said. “When you really watch film and look at film critically, certain things (are more obvious). Sometimes it’s on the line, sometimes it’s on wide receivers. There’s not a perfect play out there, so I can’t say I’m open. There’s a lot of other things that’s taking place on the field.”

Quinn will be an interesting decision too. Or is he already signed for next year?

Seems like there’s a lot of disagreement over the value of:
    Barron, Quinn, Tru, and Watkins.

Tru and Watkins are both FAs.

Quinn is signed through 2019 (so 2 seasons left). They gain 11.4+ M against the cap in 2018 with RQ if they move on.
Barron is signed though 2020 (so 3 seasons left). They gain 7 M against the cap in 2018 with MB if they move on.

I hope we can afford him. Watkins, Woods, Kupp and Reynolds are good, young players. Cooper too is a special teams standout and decent WR in his own right.

i’m only on board if they can sign him at a reasonable rate. but personally i’d rather see them make this defense great.

Here’s one promising stat from Sammy Watkins’ disappointing season

    Cameron DaSilva

Here's one promising stat from Sammy Watkins' disappointing season

As much as he helped open up things for other players on offense, Sammy Watkins was a fairly big disappointment for the Rams in 2017. With only 39 catches for 593 yards, he was hardly the No. 1 receiver many fans and analysts expected him to be in his first year in L.A.

Sean McVay and Jared Goff will talk at length about what a great teammate he is and how much his presence helps the rest of the receiving corps, but at some point, he has to produce the way many want him to.

As disappointing as 2017 was for him, there were a few promising stats to take away from his season. One interesting statistic worth noting is Watkins’ reliability in close-quarter catches, or tight-window throws.

According to NextGen Stats, Watkins was the seventh-best receiver in the NFL when it comes to tight-window catches. He afforded a 93.1 passer rating on those throws, making difficult catches with defenders all around him.

However, his placement on this list, especially his wildly impressive 93.1 passer rating when targeted in tight windows, shows that he was quite valuable as a big-play threat in the Rams’ high-scoring offense. While it’s tempting to imagine the free-agent-to-be in a setting where he’d be a more featured piece of a passing game, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Watkins showed he can make contested catches, but he has to be more consistent when it comes to getting separation. On average, he only created 2.5 yards of separation, which ranks toward the bottom of the NFL.

I think he has the best hands on the Rams.

He showed really strong hands on those slants for TD when the Rams were close to the goal line. If he will sign for 12-15, then Rams will have locked in a very good young wide receiver group for the next4-5 years.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking and some of those low and away passes he caught.

it’s a gamble. he’s inconsistent at best right now. so you’re paying for potential. is he really worth 12-15 based on his past production?

i like him. i like the potential. at this point i’d rather spend it on other positions. but i won’t be totally disappointed if they re-sign him.

Woods and Watkins have great hands. And that was one of those A-to-Z improvements Mc-Snead made, I think.

Based on reports from a couple years ago compared to last year, I believe he is maturing. I believe on a team with good coaches who will explain to him the why, and given a complete offseason with the Rams, he will become that much more lethal.

He draws coverages because he both stretches the field and makes tough catches in traffic. He a physical receiver. His combination of traits makes a difference in opening things for everyone else even when he personally does not get have a high level of production.

I recommend keeping him if it doesn’t break the bank because I don’t think you can replace him with one person and having him on the field makes things better for everyone else.
