Bengals fifth round pick J.J. Dielman claimed by Rams

The Cincinnati Bengals have lost a member of the 2017 NFL Draft class.
After waiving fifth round offensive lineman J.J. Dielman on Saturday, the Los Angeles Rams claimed him on Sunday. He will now join the 53-man roster in L.A., according to Rich Hammond, a beat writer in L.A.
The former Utah Utes captain started out in college as a right tackle before switching to play the center position in his senior season. Unfortunately, five games into the year he went down with a season-ending foot injury. That injury continued into this year with the Bengals. Dielman was unavailable for OTAs and minicamp but was cleared from his Lisfranc injury in time for training camp. That set him back a bit, which didn’t help toward his bid for a roster spot.
Alex Redmond, an undrafted player who joined the Bengals in 2016 and spent last year on the practice squad, beat Dielman out for the final offensive lineman spot on the team’s roster.
The Bengals were hoping to get Dielman on the practice squad, but he was exposed to waivers and quickly picked up by the Rams, who had a high priority order.

Jefferson is a 5 tech by size … great pickup.
6-4 291 from Maryland … Maryland runs a quasi 3-4 … so he should have experience inside and outside with leverage.
I think its Aaron Neary … And the THIRD Eastern Washington alum …
He’s a Center … 6-4 301. 1st year player …
Austin Neary is a baseball player.
Dielman played ORT for two years before switching to center
His short arms kind of dictate his being an inside guy … but he has the bloodlines (cousin of Kris) and started 37 straight games or something like that.
Might be our backup OC … couple analysts really liked his chances to start in the league after a year as a backup.

September 3, 2017 at 2:22 pm #73688PA RamParticipantI think the Rams may have their “center-of-the-future” in Dielman. He certainly has a shot at it. Cincy wanted to put him on their practice squad but he didn’t make it back to them. I watched some of him on Gamepass against the Colts and liked what I saw. I love this signing.

OVERVIEW
One of the top offensive linemen in the Pac-12 couldn’t find a place on the all-conference squad this season because a leg injury ended his senior year after five games. Dielman, the cousin of former NFL lineman Kris Dielman, was a team captain and started at center for the Utes in 2016 after starting all 26 games in 2014 and 2015 at the right tackle spot. J.J. (which stands for Jeffrey Joseph) was a second-team All-Pac-12 pick as a junior. The Arizona high school all-state pick redshirted his first year in Salt Lake City and played in one game as a reserve in 2013 before becoming a fixture on Utah’s line.ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Has three years of experience at right tackle to go along with his newfound snaps at center. Has quick feet and good flexibility through his hips. Possesses desired body control. Talented work-up blocker who finds his second-level targets and strikes with accuracy. Can get to the difficult angles. Will work to bend knees after engagement to improve his leverage. Quick to flip hips and wall off his man. Works well with guards in handoff on combo blocks. Plays with good determination and effort. Rides the bull as long as he can after engaging with bigger defenders. Has tackle feet to mirror pass rushers along interior.
WEAKNESSES Has short arms. Unlikely to offer tackle flexibility on roster due to a lack of length. Will need to add more bulk to prepare for NFL battles. Below average core strength. Finds himself hanging on rather than improving positioning. Finesse player in need of stellar technique without addition of play strength. Unable to create push at the point of attack without help. Can improve with securing on second level. Season-ending foot injury will have to be cleared at combine.
NFL COMPARISON Wesley Johnson
BOTTOM LINE An athletic center with the plus athleticism of a three-year tackle, but he lacks the core power that some teams will require from an interior lineman. Needs to bulk up and add as much strength as possible in order to be a functional NFL player. While his movement skills will be enticing for zone-scheme teams, he could be limited by scheme fit, which narrows the teams who might consider drafting him.

Hammond
On a day filled with NFL transactions, when teams claimed players and started to build their practice squads, the Rams added to their depth on their offensive and defensive lines on Sunday.
The Rams claimed three players through the NFL waiver system: offensive linemen J.J. Dielman (from Cincinnati) and Aaron Neary (Philadelphia), and defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson (Seattle).
To make room, the Rams made the toughest of cuts, and dropped players who survived the initial round of cuts and made the 53-man roster on Saturday. Linebacker Nic Grigsby, tight end Johnny Mundt and defensive lineman Louis Trinca-Pasat were waived.
The Rams also signed nine players to their practice squad, including tight end Travis Wilson (San Clemente High). Fullback Sam Rogers, receiver Paul McRoberts, offensive linemen Michael Dunn and Jake Eldrenkamp, defensive lineman Omarius Bryant, linebackers Cassanova McKinzy and Carlos Thompson and defensive back Isaiah Johnson also made the practice squad.
Among the three players claimed Sunday, Jefferson appears to have the best chance to make an early impact. Jefferson, a fifth-round draft pick in 2016, played three games on the Seahawks’ defensive line last year before a season-ending knee injury.
Dielman, a fifth-round pick by Cincinnati this year, and Neary, who went undrafted in 2016, both can play center. Neary is a former Eastern Washington teammate of current Rams Cooper Kupp and Samson Ebukam.
Cornerback Mike Jordan, waived by the Rams on Saturday, got claimed by Cleveland.
Four other players cut by the Rams on Saturday — running back Lenard Tillery, receiver Nelson Spruce and linebackers Kevin Davis and Josh Forrest — cleared waivers on were placed on the Rams’ injured list.
September 3, 2017 at 6:36 pm #73703znModeratorQuinton Jefferson NFL Draft 2016
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 291 lbs.
40 Time: 4.95s
3-Cone: 7.95s
Short Shuttle: 4.37sPOSITIVES
A junior at Maryland, Quinton Jefferson threw his hat into the NFL draft ring a year early. NFL teams looking for an interior pass-rusher to develop will take a long, hard look at this 3-technique tackle. Jefferson was uncaged as a junior and posted his best season yet with 12.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He also added a blocked kick and an interception while earning All-Big Ten honorable mention recognition.
On the field, Jefferson is a penetrator. He comes out of his stance low and with enough initial quickness to get offensive linemen to panic. He has nice leverage and understands how to use his pad height and hands to get underneath the pads of offensive linemen. Jefferson flashes a nice spin move and an above-average swim to get free as a pass-rusher.
He’s a bit of a dancer at the line, but he has the closing speed and toughness to be effective in pass-rushing situations. His lateral quickness shows well on tape, as does his hip flexibility and burst.
NEGATIVES
Jefferson was invited to the Senior Bowl as a graduated junior but wasn’t able to take advantage of the platform to showcase his skills as a pass-rusher due to a back injury.
In a scouting world in which everything is evaluated, Jefferson’s small hands (8 ⅞”) in relation to the rest of his frame brought up question marks at the Senior Bowl and combine. Jefferson also has smaller-than-ideal legs and could stand to add bulk and power to better handle blockers at the point of attack.
Jefferson will be looked at as a scheme-specific player who can only line up in a one-gapping 4-3 defense. He doesn’t have the power or leverage to play other spots currently. Teams will thoroughly check a torn ACL from his 2014 season.
