LA Rams to place RB Lance Dunbar on PUP list, out indefinitely
It looks like more of the same from the former Dallas Cowboys’ running back.

Lance Dunbar may want to hang up his cleats.

The veteran running back headed to Los Angeles after inking a free agent deal with the Rams this offseason, but his injury problems were apparently in his carry-on luggage — as they followed him right out of Dallas. What Dunbar saw as a fresh start is now anything but, with the Rams ruling him out indefinitely with a knee injury and, according to NFLTradeRumors, will now place him on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list to start the season.

There is no timetable for his return.

Dunbar was signed in 2012 out of the undrafted free agent pool by the Cowboys with the expectation his Swiss Army Knife skill set would be an invaluable asset in the NFL, much in the way Darren Sproles has been for much of his career.

Instead, Dunbar has been anything but.

The veteran finally delivered impact play early into his fourth season in 2015 after being inconsequential over the course of his first three campaigns. As soon as his light began to shine, however, he’d suffer a season-ending knee injury.

The Cowboys had seen enough to justify bringing Dunbar back on a one-year, $1.25M “prove it” deal for 2016, which saw him battle injury yet again while delivering inept production over the course of 13 games. A predestined change-of-pace back, Dunbar dictated the pace of the game in nary a way — delivering only 31 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown to go along with a dismissible 122 receiving yards and no receiving touchdowns.

And things become precipitously worse when his career numbers are factored in as a whole.

In five seasons, the 27-year-old has a total of only 422 rushing yards along with 646 yards receiving. The lone touchdown he scored in 2016 was the only time in five years he’s been in the end zone, and that won’t cut it based on the team’s expectations.

That’s a total of 1,068 total yards and one touchdown in five years.

Despite his lack of production and poor healthy history, the Rams opted to sign him to a one-year, $3M deal — of which he may not take a single snap.

Lance Dunbar signed a 1 year, $1,500,000 contract with the Los Angeles Rams, including $1,375,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $1,500,000. In 2017, Dunbar will earn a base salary of $1,000,000 and a roster bonus of $476,556, while carrying a cap hit of $1,476,556.
