Couple of nice plays in one-on-ones. Aarion Penton breaks up a pass on Travis Wilson. Sam Rogers puts on a nice move to get free & catch

Goff rolls out to his right delivers a really nice ball downfield to Kupp off play action during 11-on-11. Nice play.

Nice catch from TE Everett during 7-on-7. Had to slide toward the ground near the sideline to come up with it.

No pads, so take this with a grain of salt. But a Barwin spin move in 11-on-11 just looked real nice. #RamsCamp

Nice soft hands catch on the sideline from Josh Reynolds, pass from Goff, in 11-on-11.

Another nice sideline throw from Goff to Woods in 11-on-11. Those two have been sharp today.

OL Kyle Turley (2003) and WR Ron Brown (1984-89, 91) are the Rams alums signing for fans today.

First fumbled snap of training camp… belongs to Dan Orlovsky.

Few times today I’ve seen Cooper Kupp adjust other WR’s alignment. I’d have to ask, but I bet he already knows playbook for all 3 WR roles.

    Guess this @CooperKupp kid the @RamsNFL drafted is pretty sure-handed. #RamsCamp #TrainingCamp #HornsUp

Maybe he has that unique ability to slow the game down. Who knows?

Rams rookie fullback Sam Rogers juking Josh Forrest out of his shoes might be my favorite training camp moment, and it’s only Day 2

Jared Goff just delivered a beauty to rookie WR Cooper Kupp, while rolling out to his right. Can’t say we’ve seen that out of him before.

Andrew Whitworth is out here blocking three different guys on one play. He’s 35 years old.

Rams NT Brockers has been texting with Donald: “It’s killing him right now. I know it is. He cannot wait until this contract thing is over”

Sean McVay, on being asked about Aaron Donald: “It’s understandable. I’m asking those (front office) guys too. What is going on? [laughs]”

McVay said there is “ongoing communication” between the Rams and Aaron Donald but didn’t elaborate.

Rookie report from Day 2 at Rams camp: FB Sam Rogers put a fierce double-move on second-year linebacker Josh Forrest, easily slipping by him in a one-on-one situation. Also, TEGerald Everett made a nice sliding catch near the sideline during 7-on-7 work.

Five Observations from Day 2 of Rams Camp

    By Myles Simmons

    http://www.therams.com/news-and-events/article-1/Five-Observations-from-Day-2-of-Rams-Camp/c209da92-38eb-46dd-a570-595ef32f880a

The Rams completed their second training camp practice on Sunday afternoon. While the players are still acclimating and therefore not yet in pads, there were nevertheless a bevy of quality plays made throughout the day. Here are five observations from Day 2.

    1) Goff looked sharp

After going through what the quarterback himself called an “up and down” Day 1, quarterback Jared Goff was on point throughout Day 2. Early in the club’s 11-on-11 drills, Goff rolled to his right off play action and hit wideout Cooper Kupp with a deep downfield pass. It was a sign of things to come for the young quarterback, as he remained sharp all practice.

“Yeah, I felt good,” Goff said during Rams Camp Live after the session. “There are some things you want back, and some things you feel good about. I think, always, you’re trying to get better. But practice is a time to make some mistakes sometimes. But, yeah, today I felt pretty good.”

Goff and wide receiver Robert Woods have also exhibited strong chemistry over the first couple of days, with Woods making a solid sideline reception during 11-on-11 drills on Sunday.

Yes it’s early, but there was a clear progression from Day 1 to Day 2 for the second-year quarterback.

    2) Whitworth vs. Quinn will be fun to watch in pads

Whenever you have two elite players who line up against one another on a daily basis in training camp, it’s fun to watch. We haven’t seen left tackle Andrew Whitworth and outside linebacker Robert Quinn line up against one another in pads yet. But just from their footwork over these last two days, it’s clear there’s going to be some solid competition between them.

As the saying goes, “iron sharpens iron.” And in these first two days, sometimes Quinn wins a rep, and sometimes Whitworth wins a rep. But both players look like they’re at the top of their game.

For Whitworth, that’s despite entering camp at 35 years old.

“If you want to talk about Whit’s age, all you’ve got to do is watch him on the field and you know the productions there. The guy is a leader. The guy’s a beast,” right guard Rob Havenstein said. “Anything I can take from him and apply to my game I am going to do — clearly it works. You don’t stay in the league for that many years without being some of the best. I think it’s better for everyone that we can kind of pull off of him and take what he does.”

    3) Barwin still has it

Speaking of Rams free agent acquisitions, outside linebacker Connor Barwin made a few nice moves during the 11-on-11 periods during Sunday’s practice. At one point, he broke out a spin reminiscent of one of the plays we broke down in All 22 once he signed with the club in March. (Head to the 1:00 mark in the video below.)

The outside linebacker clearly has a lot of comfort in coordinator Wade Phillips’ defensive scheme, which should only become more apparent once the players put on pads.

    4) Draft picks making plays

It’s always intriguing to see the progress draft picks make from the end of the offseason program to training camp. On Sunday, tight end Gerald Everett displayed how he’s come along, making a few tough catches — including a sliding grab toward the sideline on a pass from Goff in 7-on-7 drills.

“I think when you just look at the first couple of days, the comfort level that you see in Gerald Everett and just moving around and getting lined up and just executing his role responsibility on the given play, he’s much more comfortable,” head coach Sean McVay said. “When you can do that, you can play fast and that’s when I think you’ll see his athleticism.

Elsewhere, Kupp has continued to catch just about everything in sight — including that nice rollout pass from Goff. Fellow wideout Josh Reynolds has displayed some soft hands and his lengthy catch radius — including on a nice comeback route from Goff. Fullback Sam Rogers shook off a defender during one-on-ones to make a reception out of the backfield, eliciting some “Ooos” from the assembled crowd.

And there was one play in 11-on-11 drills where outside linebacker Samson Ebukamflew through the offensive line to get a play stopped as a sack during 11-on-11. It wasn’t quite clear where he rushed from, but he arrived in the backfield quickly to induce the coaches to blow their whistles and end the play.

    5) Keep an eye on…

Three under-the-radar players who have caught my attention so far in camp are defensive end Morgan Fox, wide receiver Shakeir Ryan, and defensive back Aaron Penton.

You may remember Fox from last year’s fourth preseason matchup against Minnesota when he dominated the first half with 2.0 sacks and a number of run stuffs and quarterback hits. He has speed and looks like he could be effective as a potential rotational piece along the front seven.

Ryan is an undrafted free agent out of Northwestern State, and is one of the youngest Rams at just 21 years old. But he made a nice deep reception from third-string quarterback Dan Orlovsky during Sunday’s practice. He also has been working as a returner, so it will be telling to see if he receives any game reps there during the preseason.

And Penton has flashed plenty over the first two days. On Saturday, he recorded the day’s only interception, bringing it back for an ostensible pick six. And on Sunday, he stood out in one-on-one drills when he ripped a ball out of an offensive player’s hands to force an incompletion.

Again, it’s early, and there’s much still to learn about all three players once the club puts on pads. But they’re players who have stood out to me over the first two days.

Training Camp Report: Everything You Need to Know from Day 2

    By Kristen Lago

    http://www.therams.com/news-and-events/article-1/Training-Camp-Report-Everything-You-Need-to-Know-from-Day-2/7aabf885-67ac-4517-92c5-c4b817864d27

The Rams second 2017 training camp practice is officially in the books.

On Sunday, the team got some solid work in throughout the afternoon, practicing in jerseys, shorts, and helmets for about two hours in front of an upbeat crowd. And though the pads were off, there was still plenty to be seen. Here are the top observations from Day 2 at UC Irvine.

    TOP TAKEAWAYS

New additions making an immediate impact

During the offseason and coming into training camp, the Rams made a point to sign several young, dynamic playmakers. On defense, the Rams added depth at cornerback with former Bronco Kayvon Webster. Webster and the rest of the secondary looked solid in today’s practice breaking up several plays downfield and positioning themselves well in man coverage.

Webster reunited with his former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips by signing with Los Angeles and has adjusted well on the Rams’ defense. He had several notable plays throughout the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 periods, but really shined during the one-on-ones — breaking up a deep ball to wide receiver Robert Woods early in the day. In addition, Webster was the last player on the field, choosing to spend a few extra minutes catching balls off the jugs machine.

“It’s really important,” he said of getting those extra reps in. “We’re preaching getting turnovers, so I am working on catching the ball a lot. I try to get 300 catches a day.”

On offense, Woods has been an impressive addition. Quarterback Jared Goff connected with Woods on several routes today, including a few deep passes downfield. While Goff praised his new receiver after yesterday’s practice, it was head coach Sean McVay’s turn to complement the receiver’s versatility on the field.

“He’s done excellent. He’s playing both outside and inside for us. He’s competing well in the run-game,” McVay said. “Kind of like we talked about the other day, he’s been what we had hoped. He’s a complete receiver, not really limited in any of the routes he can run.”

“You talk about a pro’s pro where you say something in the meeting room and he’s going to be able to translate it out to the grass,” he continued. “A conscientious guy that you can look at and say, ‘This is the example of what it looks like to work and do the little things the right way on a consistent basis.’”

    The defense continues to shine

It was another stellar performance today for the entire defense. The defensive line in particular, has continued to take the transition from a 4-3 to a 3-4 in stride. They look comfortable in their new defensive scheme and are showcasing a lot of depth up front. Defensive tackle Michael Brockers, alongside Dominique Easley and Ethan Westbrooks took reps with the first-team, and even without pads looked aggressive and mobile.

“It’s a Wade [Phillips] defense — it’s a mix of things,” Brockers said of the new system. “We’ve got games, we’ve got blitzes, so it’s fun to play in. As a fairly large tackle I think I fit in perfectly. He came in [and] he didn’t take any aggressiveness away from us, so you know we’re pretty much doing the same thing in the 3-4 that we would do in the 4-3, so I’m loving it.”

The few, the proud, the Over 30’s

For the last five years the Rams have fielded one of the youngest teams in the NFL, but this year the offensive line welcomed one of the league’s most seasoned veterans — 35 year old Andrew Whitworth. Over the weekend, Whitworth has proven to be a valuable addition to the Rams line, bringing wisdom, experience, technique, and skill up front.

Though he is one of few Rams over the age of 30, McVay made the perfect parallel, referring to Whitworth as a fine wine, who “is just getting better with age.”

“I think that he is the epitome of a pro’s pro — doing the little things the right way all the time,” McVay said. “A great example in terms of just playing the techniques, the fundamentals — I think it has been encouraging to see a guy that has had the level of success that he has had in Cincinnati, and then asking him to do a couple things differently, and how willing he has been to buy in to those techniques. But he has been everything and more.”

    FIELD-LEVEL OBSERVATIONS

    – Fullback Sam Rogers was the first player to take the field on Sunday, followed closely by his teammate and roommate Cooper Kupp. The two took turns at the jug machine before practice.

    – During the 11-on-11 portion of practice, cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman showcased his speed in zone coverage breaking up a passing play to Pharoh Cooper.

    – Tight end Tyler Higbee saw a lot of action during today’s practice connecting on several routes from Goff — exhibiting strong hands and plenty of run-after-catch ability on field.

    – Outside linebacker Connor Barwin stayed after practice chatting with rookie tight end Gerald Everett. Everett had a few big plays today including a nice sliding catch during 7-on-7 drills.

    PLAY OF THE DAY

Once again the play of the day came from the offense — this time featuring wide receiver Tavon Austin. During 11-on-11 drills, Austin ran a jet sweep to the right side before cutting up the middle for a would-be touchdown.

Though Austin did not participate in the team’s offseason program, he has fit in well with the new offense, showcasing his high speed and solid hands. At yesterday’s practice, the receiver talked about his excitement to get back on field.

“It’s exciting for anybody that plays this position,” he said about playing under McVay’s instruction. “Everybody wants the ball. Everybody wants the opportunity to get the ball. So I’m definitely excited to be in the offense, I just want to keep working every day. Whatever challenges he has for me, just want to knock them down.”

    PRESS POINTS

After practice Rob Havenstein took the time to address the media. Catch up on his most interesting point after Day 2:

    ROB HAVENSTEIN:

On playing alongside Andrew Whitworth: “If you want to talk about Whit’s age, all you gotta do is watch him on the field and you know the productions there. The guy is a leader, the guy’s a beast. Anything I can take from him and apply to my game I am going to do, clearly it works. You don’t stay in the league for that many years without being some of the best. I think it’s better for everyone that we can kind of pull off of him and take what he does.”
