znModeratorPFF: WILL RAMS CB E.J. GAINES RE-GAIN HIS 2014 FORM?
Gaines missed his sophomore season with an injury, and did not fare as well in 2016 than he did as a rookie in 2014.

– The Rams drafted CB E.J. Gaines in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL draft and he played more snaps as a rookie than any other Rams cornerback that year.

– Gaines’ nine TDs given up in 2016 were the most in the league among cornerbacks as compared to 14th best with only one in 2014.
– He was targeted 85 times in 2014 and gave up 100 less yards than in 2016 when he was targeted only 72 times.

znModeratorJAMON BROWN VYING FOR STARTING ROLE AT RIGHT TACKLE WITH THE RAMS
Brown has played exclusively at guard with the Rams since being drafted, however has shifted to tackle during OTAs.
The Los Angeles Rams had T Jamon Brown working with the first team at right tackle during organized team activities while T Greg Robinson worked with the second. Brown has played only guard since being drafted.
In 2014, PFF’s first season tracking college football, Brown graded out as the 25th overall tackle out of 297 qualified tackles while at Louisville, splitting time on both the left and right side.
His run blocking grade ranked 17th in the nation while his pass blocking ranked 64th.
Of the 20 total QB pressures that Brown gave up that, eight came when at the right tackle position.

znModeratorMCVAY’S OFFENSE SHOULD HELP GURLEY FOCUS ON RUNNING THE BALL
Gurley saw a dip in his production last year, as his role in the pass game increased.

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley’s rushing production dropped off in his second year in the league, the same year his role in the passing game increased. However, new Rams head coach Sean McVay used his backs for specific roles in the last two seasons, that applied to their individual strengths.
Redskins RB Chris Thompson was used as the receiving threat out of the backfield, as he led McVay’s backfield in targets over the last two seasons, but his rush attempts were at least 100 less than the lead back.
Never really known as a pass-catcher, before his injury in 2014, Gurley saw only 12 targets in six games at the University of Georgia.
The Rams brought in Lance Dunbar during free agency, who has seen more passing targets than rushing attempts over the last two seasons.

For years book on Rams was pound the A gaps and Brockers was drafted (and Langford signed) to stop that, and they have. Look at the chart below and notice all the red before 2012…this is Football Outsiders grades on run stopping. Since 2012 Rams have been in top 8 every year (highlighted in yellow) and especially good up the middle.
Football Outsiders has good and interesting metrics…and they show Brockers is very valuable.
Also, all one needs do is watch him play. He lands his blow and controls his man.
He’s a fine shade tackle, commonly known as a nose tackle. And does a good job. And he is part of reason the A-Gaps have been shut since 2012. So back to Football Outsiders. Since 2012 A-Gaps have been shut. Before they were sh/t
