Lamarcus Joyner, who solidified himself as a standout slot corner last year, is a real option to convert to free safety, with Maurice Alexander shifting over to strong safety to replace free agent T.J. McDonald. Under that scenario, Joyner could play safety when the Rams run a 3-4 set under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, then perhaps reclaim his role as a slot corner on nickel downs.
It would allow the Rams to play Joyner on every snap — and it could free them up to continue to attack the offense through the draft.

Rams slot CB Lamarcus Joyner is a “real option” to move to free safety. Strictly limited to nickel corner duties under the Jeff Fisher staff, new DC Wade Phillips wants to get Joyner on the field for every snap. He played safety his first three years at Florida State and was a do-it-all maven, racking up sacks, interceptions, and forced fumbles. The Rams are expected to move last year’s FS Maurice Alexander to strong safety to replace free agent T.J. McDonald.

March 29, 2017 at 4:34 pm #66814znModeratorI think some folks underestimate Joyner.
IMO the Rams D was not the same whenever he wasn’t in there last year.
Even when he missed a play or 2 because of concussion protocol, you could see the difference. They would not be as effective.

i don’t mind joyner to free safety, but i still think it’s in their best interest to draft a defensive back this year. tru is on a one year deal, and this defensive back class is insanely strong. need to have the big picture in mind.

Joyner will fill the role TJ Ward had in Denver. Ward was probably the most versatile piece in Wade’s defense the last 2 years. He was one of the main reasons Wade was able to play so much base 3-4 because Ward could come down in the box, cover in the slot, blitz, and even play LB. He lined up everywhere; single high, as a split safety, nickle LB, in the box, and slot corner. Ward is only 2 inches taller and 6 pounds heavier, so the size difference is not that great.
Joyner plays with the same aggressiveness and has similar position versatility playing LB and Nickel last year to go along with extensive experience at safety at Florida State. Mo is constantly improving and is a bigger faster version of Wade’s Denver SS, Darian Stewart. I like the mix we have at safety.

Joyner’s skill-set allows him to be an above average slot CB. However, his weaknesses limit him from ever being great in that position. For the same reason that I’d rather have Marshall Faulk at HB than WR. Faulk would have been a good WR, but he was an elite HB. Joyner’s weaknesses are quite easy to mask at FS while his strengths are all magnified. Joyner was an above average slot CB despite never being a great player with his back to the ball and being a bit too grabby in man coverage. GW valued Joyner’s versatility as a slot corner greatly. It allowed him to use smaller, faster personnel because Joyner could play the run like an extra safety in the box. But he’s always been a much better fit at FS. He’s at his best attacking downhill and playing with his eyes to the QB. It’s a position where he has the ability to be very good. Considering that we have a hole at FS, I’d rather play Joyner at the position that maximizes his skill-set.
Our defense was among the best in the NFL each of the past two years at not allowing teams to convert third downs. I happen to think Joyner’s above average play is a big reason why considering that teams often look for their slot WRs on third downs. The Rams defense was fourth in 2016 (at 36.3%) and sixth in 2015 (at 34.7%) in the NFL in lowest third down conversion rate allowed
Tyrann Mathieu is just under 5’9″. He’s less than an inch taller than Joyner. He’s one of the NFL’s best safeties. It’s absolutely silly to say that being 5’9″ or 5’10” is fine at FS, but 5’8″ is too small? Those two inches mean nothing against a 6’5″ TE. Rodney McLeod was a small guy too. If you have the balls, strength, and instincts, you can play FS.
Joyner ran a 4.55 40. If he’s too slow to play safety, there are hell of a lot of good safeties in the NFL who were too slow to play their position. That Eric Weddle guy only ran a 4.56 40. Too slow to play safety despite being a five-time All Pro.

I guess we are all looking forward to seeing the new Wade Phillips Defense.
The Greg Williams Defense was spectacular sometimes, but it was a mess sometimes too. It would be nice to see some consistency.
