QB Abuse Rate is the rate at which a team exposes their QB to hits and sacks from opposing defensives. This is presented as the percent of plays which end in a QB hit or sack. We love this stat because it is not only a general offense stat, but an O-line stat, and our regular readers know how much we love the big men up front. The best O-lines, like the Cowboys, Steelers, and Raiders, are reaffirmed in this stat by their far below average QB Abuse Rate.

The QB Abuse Rate is an important stat because it gives us an overview of just how much damage a QB takes in a game. To put it in perspective while the average QB is getting hit once a drive, Derek Carr is getting hit less than once a quarter. That type of protection cannot be overvalued. Great protection leads to less hurried throws and better decision making, both obvious keys to success.

Now there is an evident question here; why are we concentrating of the total number of plays that end in QB Abuse instead of attempts per hit or sack? The reason is because we are looking at an all-encompassing view of how teams allow their QB to be hit. Poor blocking on hand-offs that end in QB contact are accounted as QB hits. By looking at rate we get a great view of just how brutal some QBs’ Sundays are.
