What’s up with the running game? I think it’s a combination of factors I’ll rank from least effecting the scheme to most: the line-play is down a bit this year, more teams are using LBs for run blitzes against us, they’re doing this because Tavon isn’t used as a decoy with reverses and jet sweeps as much. Without the threat of Tavon on almost every play (which was a problem in other areas of the offense), LBs don’t have to stay home and can come crashing in on run blitzes. They also won’t get taken out of the play trying to follow a decoy either so Gurley has to deal with much more traffic in front of him.
September 26, 2016 at 7:57 pm #53939InvaderRamModeratorwhat kind of running game do they have this year? i remember there was all that talk about a zbs last year. what do they use this year?

IF Goff is everything the Rams hope he’ll be, then he absolutely will loosen up defenses. But Fisher didn’t want to “find a way” to get him up to speed in an accelerated manner. He had every intention of just taking his time with him. And he did so because he felt he had that luxury. He didn’t want to let Goff take his lumps as he was learning. He wanted Goff to learn and then dish out the lumps. So it’s really not a matter of the coaching staff being unable to get their QB up to speed like everyone else. It’s just a developmental preference. I’m sure if Keenum got hurt in week one, that Goff would have started the Tampa game. More than likely. And they would have definitely found a way to get him up to speed before that too.
What about the argument that Keenum starting means defenses crowd the line and there’s no room for Gurley? All of this “Case needs to throw vertical” stuff is purely speculative, IMO. I’ve already posted splits that shows he throws to the middle and deep zones just about as regularly as any other QB in the league when you calculate percentages. But since this is the theory everyone is going with now, that Case doesn’t throw deep, and that’s why Gurley can’t get going, then the team with the most rushing yards (the Raiders) should have a QB who regularly throws a ton of deep stuff, and not so much in the 0-10 yard range. RIght? Wrong.
The Rams played two defenses (9ers, Seahawks) with very good front 7’s, and then they kicked Tampa’s ass. The Raiders have played teams with a combined record of 3-6.
I don’t see Jared Goff, even with his unprecedented arm talent, being someone defenses are going to fear right away. They’re still going to take the same approach of stacking up against the run and putting pressure on him in order to rattle him. Maybe he could exploit that and make defenses pay, or maybe he’ll get clobbered and do just enough to help us win. Similar to what Keenum is doing now. I don’t think anyone can say definitively how that will pan out until we *see* it pan out.
Now. All that said, this myth that Keenum is holding Gurley back? Last year, in his 4 games with Keenum, Gurley averaged 85 yards a game and had 5 touchdowns. I don’t see the correlation. Last year again, against Green Bay, Foles threw for 141 yards with 4 picks (while GB was stacking up against the run), yet Gurley ran for 153 yards.
Mayyyyyyyyyyyyyyybe Gurley needs to be Gurley regardless of the fronts he’s facing. And maybe the line needs to get a better push. He only needs one hole or crease to break one, no matter how many defenders are in the box. In fact (according to even Gurley himself), breaking through an 8 or 9 man front leads to much bigger gains. Steven Jackson did a fairly good job of getting his despite having no QB for several years. It’s not impossible to do.

But, mostly I think it is the Offensive Line. Not that they aren’t good enough, but that they haven’t really settled in on the starting 5. They just didn’t get time together as a set unit.
Give those guys a couple games together and they will be fine. imo
I read that Gurley did better when Harkey was used as a FB out of the I.
Also, nobody is scared by our WRs, especially if they can’t hold on to the ball.

I would put it this way…if it’s the line, it’s because they;re out of sync. It’s still young (2 2nd year players, that is if you count Brown/Wichmann as one guy, and a 3rd year LOT combined with a center who has actually only played 1 whole season plus 4 games before that). They didn’t get Hav back till near the end and that moved Saffold to guard just before the season.
So yeah it could be the OL is out of sync.

The next 2 or 3 games should make or break that theory. But they certainly should play better with more time together. imo
September 28, 2016 at 6:34 am #54027wvParticipantI think its a lot of little things.
OLine out of sync.
Hav just coming back from injury
youth on the line.
playing against good front Dlines
Keenum being the 32 best ‘starting’QB in the NFL
Rams WRs probly being in the bottom-tier of the NFL
Other teams ‘figuring something out’ about the Rams offensive scheme.Stuff like that. Not just one thing.
The reason I’m optimistic some of that stuff will
improve with time and game experience and adjustments. With Keenum at QB though, and without even having one no.1 WR (some teams have more than one), the Rams can only be ‘so’ good. Wildcard level is the ceiling, I’d think.
But add Goff to the mix (when he’s ready) and find a no.1 WR next year,
and then maybe the get to the next level. No matter who the coach is 🙂In the meantime Snisher plays with the cards they dealt themselves. And they try to win ugly for a while. Play efficient mistake-free offense, and turn loose GW’s dogs of War on D. And HOPE that legatron has his shit together. Legatron will be the difference in three games this year. One way or another.

It was a nail biter that shouldn’t have been, but I’ll take the W. I had to watch it on my phone so I missed a lot of the grit of the line play … so anyone who wants to fill me in on the big uglies, please do.
The Great
1) Quinn Returns … having him threatening with that speed and closing ability means we have two of the most feared linemen on one line.
2) Team held its focus during an hour delay at the end of the game. I thought we’d lose, honestly.
3) Confidence in Gurley inside the 5 … I haven’t been so sure of TDs in a long time.
4) Everything about the Barron pick. The hit the rallying to the ball and the focus.
5) Bennie’s 3rd down and long conversion .. I swear someone has to be keeping track of how many times he’s converted on a throwaway play.
The Good
6) Quick’s double move was a thing of beauty.
7) Troy Hill playing good football … very curious to see how/if Gaines overtakes him.
8) Playcalling was pretty solid.
9) Britt playing really consistently .. our first 1000 yard WR in a decade?
10) Westbrooks best game as a pro? Yes he was Johnny on the spot for the TD, but his whole game seemed at a higher level of intensity.
11) Brockers consistent push.
The Bad
12) Evans can’t go off on us .. I am not blaming TruJo because the coverages looked like they were being switched up often, but man.
13) Joyner, Humphries is your guy, you gotta figure out how to cover kids like that.
14) Have to open bigger holes for Todd. Have to find way of getting him out on routes too.
15) Can we get one game with no drops? Should I offer to throw a party?
16) Higbee the penalty on the goalline, lord. That’s your ONE. And can we get him the ball?
The Ugly
17) Sims, seriously dude. I’d not dress him next game and bring Longacre up to give him the message.
18) Case, the pick 6 … that’s twice this year I couldn’t tell if you were blind or not.
Couple Questions
19) Is the rubbery nature of the interior O line due to Barnes lack of pop and power? Can he not get to where he needs to go before he’s thrown off?
20) Has anyone seen our FSs?
21) Is Cam Thomas doing as good a job as it looks like?
I expect to see Spruce this week. Or Cooper. We need something that hasn’t been on film yet walking into a recently embarrassed Cardinal team. If we don’t bring our A game, they are going to eat us alive.
