More to come in 10 Observations, but much of my Day 1 takeaways were the plays made by Davante Adams and Cobie Durant today. Jordan Whittington had a nice day as well

10 Observations from Day 1 of 2025 Rams Training Camp: Plenty of Davante Adams, Cobie Durant’s playmaking and more

    Stu Jackson & Wyatt Miller

    https://www.therams.com/news/10-observations-day-1-2025-rams-training-camp-davante-adams-jimmy-garoppolo-cobie-durant-dj-humphries-warren-mcclendon-jr-jordan-whittington

LOS ANGELES – The first practice of Rams Training Camp presented by UNIFY Financial Credit Union took place Wednesday, with attendance exclusive to premium Season Ticket Members.

A heavily targeted and involved Davante Adams, the playmaking of Cobie Durant and a highlight-reel catch from Jordan Whittington were among the standout moments.

Rams senior staff writer Stu Jackson spent the evening watching the offense, while staff writer Wyatt Miller watched the defense. Here are five things that stood out from each unit:

    Offense

    1) Matthew Stafford spends practice working with trainers away from the field. This was according to plan, per head coach Sean McVay, who said he misspoke Tuesday when he told reporters Stafford would work off to the side. McVay said while Stafford could be out at practice, it’s most beneficial to get him to feel “as good as he can” before returning to practice Monday. As expected, Jimmy Garoppolo led the first-team offense, while Stetson Bennett helmed the second-team unit.

    2) With Alaric Jackson (blood clots) limited to individual work and jog-throughs, D.J. Humphries and Warren McClendon Jr. both repped at left tackle. McClendon also saw snaps at right tackle on Wednesday.

“D.J., obviously, I thought for a guy that got on a couple Zooms with (offensive line coach) Ryan Wendell… you could feel that he’s played a lot of football, got great athleticism, he’s got a great demeanor,” McVay said. “Thought Warren did a nice job. So D.J. got a handful of reps. Warren was able to play right and left, got a bunch of reps. Was just talking to Ryan Wendell about that. (David) Quessenberry’s another guy that we know can play. It was great to be able to have big Rob (Havenstein) out here at the tackle spot as well. So we’re going to continue to identify – that’s going to be a really important spot for us to be able to develop, with an optimistic and a hopeful approach that Alaric is going to continue to work and be ready whenever he gets cleared.”

    3) An extended look at Jimmy Garoppolo, who looked Adams’ way often. There’s a familiarity there from their time together at the Raiders, and Garoppolo targeted Adams frequently. Even with a different quarterback under center, Adams picked up where he left off this spring with his body control and separation at the top of routes that make him a friendly target. Meanwhile, McVay said he was pleased with Garoppolo’s performance Wednesday.

    4) Whittington looked comfortable. In the spring, the second-year wide receiver told theRams.com that things are moving slower for him and he had a better understanding of the detailed stuff within the offense. On Wednesday, that comfort and confidence looked evident as a frequent target of Bennett with multiple catches. The best one was a leaping catch in double-coverage as he fell on his back, from a Bennett pass.

    5) Bennett has a solid day. The third-year pro likewise got an extended look on Wednesday, and McVay was pleased with his command of the second-team offense, as well as his decision-making and movement.

    Defense

    6) Cobie Durant had a pair of nice pass breakups. Both passes came from Garoppolo and targeted Puka Nacua on the left sideline. The first would have hit Nacua in-stride had it not been for a timely lunge from the “landshark,” as he’s called. The second came just a few minutes later on a back-shoulder ball near that same spot, and Durant met Nacua up high to knock the pass away and then hit an emphatic “nae-nae” dance in celebration.

    7) Kobie Turner led defensive line out to team period. As the defense made their way to the other practice field for team activities, he took a moment to instill a confident mindset. The 2024 team captain is once again taking on a leadership role during training camp ahead of his third NFL season.

    8) Jared Verse and Byron Young enjoy their usual banter during individual drills. The Rams’ outside linebacker duo push each other as much as any two players on the team, and it usually includes some friendly trash talk between the two. After every sled rep or one-on-one, Verse’s chirping began, and it continued throughout the day.

    9) Shaun Dolac earning his stripes. The 2025 undrafted free agent signing out of Buffalo saw the field at inside linebacker during team activities and almost tallied a sack against Garoppolo, who was forced to get rid of the ball quickly. In one individual drill prior to that, Dolac’s hand-check was so strong that the route-runner fell down.

    10) Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Charles Woods make plays on the ball. Woods almost picked off a short pass near the left sideline early in the team period. Later on, the offense drew a flag to earn a free play, so Garoppolo heaved the ball down the left sideline to Nacua, but Forbes leapt into the air to bat the ball away.

Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Charles Woods make plays on the ball.

    1. From the wiki:

Woods initially opted to transfer to the SMU Mustangs, but later flipped his commitment to the West Virginia Mountaineers.[3] In his first year with the Mountaineers, 2021, he totaled 31 tackles, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries.[6] He opted to redshirt in 2022 and appeared in four games, three as a starter, recording seven solo tackles.[2] He opted to transfer again after the 2022 season for his final year of eligibility, eventually choosing to commit to the SMU Mustangs, which he had been committed to for a time before joining the Mountaineers.[3][7] In his lone year with the Mustangs, Woods started all 14 games, posting 27 tackles and a team-leading 11 pass breakups while being named third-team All-American Athletic Conference (AAC).[2]

After going unselected in the 2024 NFL draft, Woods signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent.[9] He made the team’s initial 53-man roster for the 2024 season.[10] On December 2, Woods was waived, and re-signed to the practice squad.[11] He signed a reserve/future contract on January 20, 2025.[12]

    2. from https://www.nfldraftbuzz.com/Player/Charles-Woods-CB-WestVirginia

    Woods, 5’11” 183

    Scouting Report: Strengths

Exceptionally quick, with the feet and fluidity to mirror underneath, including in the slot against the two-way go. Woods stays low in his backpedal and explodes toward the ball, with an outstanding closing burst.

Extremely aggressive to come up and put his body in traffic to make tackles.

Has good foot quickness and short-area burst to work well in tight areas.

He’ll line up in press at times, where Woods has a quick and powerful punch. His ball skills are good, and he plays with an extremely confident and competitive demeanor.

A coordinated athlete with good footwork and balance. A heady cover player with above-average · feel and anticipation in space.

Has at least adequate straight-line speed and good balance, fluidity to change direction.

    Scouting Report: Weaknesses

Better in press coverage than in off coverage, when Woods can look shaky and unsure when transitioning out of his backpedal. He’ll give up throws underneath.

Has poor recognition skills when facing the action in zone coverage.

Plays with adequate speed but there are concerns about his ability to handle the truly explosive speedsters of the NFL.

D.J. Humphries and Warren McClendon Jr. filling in at LT

Alaric Jackson was in uniform and took part in individual drills, as expected, but he wasn’t on the field for the team portion of practice. He’s dealing with blood clots and the Rams are being cautious with their $57.75 million left tackle.

In his place, McVay said Humphries and McClendon both got reps at left tackle, with McClendon doing a “nice job” at that spot. David Quessenberry is also a candidate to potentially fill in for Jackson or Rob Havenstein.

“We are hopeful that Alaric will be ready to go. … I thought Warren did a nice job. D.J. got a handful of reps,” McVay said. “Warren was able to play right and left [tackle]. He got a bunch of reps, so just talking to Ryan Wendell about that. So, Quessenberry’s another guy that we know can play. It was great to be able to have ‘Big Rob’ out here at the tackle spot as well. So, we’re going to continue to identify – that’s going to be a really important spot for us to be able to develop with an optimistic and a hopeful approach that Alaric is going to continue to work and be ready whenever he gets cleared.”

    Stetson Bennett impressed Sean McVay

With Stafford sidelined, Bennett got more opportunities at quarterback behind Jimmy Garoppolo, who was QB1 in Stafford’s place. McVay liked what he saw from Garoppolo, saying he was “really pleased” with how he performed, but he was also impressed by Bennett.

Bennett worked with the second-team offense and it sounds like he did a nice job leading that group.

“I thought he did a nice job,” McVay said of Bennett. “I was really pleased with Jimmy, I thought he had great command. Then I thought Stetson came in and really managed the second offense really well. There was a lot of instances where he’s going against the first group. I thought he was good with his decision making, showed some good movement. I thought he changed his arm slot and was able to get the ball where the coverage dictated. I was pleased with Stetson.”

    Adam Grosbard@AdamGrosbard
Highlight of first day of Rams camp was Jordan Whittington going up for catch in double coverage on a go route as he fell to his back. Nice ball from Stetson Bennett on the play.

Another nice play was Xavier Smith scoring a TD on a jet sweep from about 20 yards out. Smith avoided a TFL while Konata Mumpfield made the block that sprung the score.

Puka Nacua said he asked Davante Adams to lead the Rams WR drills, partly out of respect for the All-Pro WR, partly because he wants to watch Adams do drills.

“When I was in the front, I was trying to sprint as fast as I can so I can turn around and watch him.”

Puka said that Adams expected Puka to be first in position drills after joining the Rams, deferring to Puka’s success in LA, but Nacua wanted Davante to take the lead.

Braden Fiske yesterday on Rams FA acquisition Poona Ford: “He’s twitchy and he gets moving in the pass. I think he could be a key piece and maybe even the missing piece that we needed.”

Sean McVay’s refrain on Rams LT Alaric Jackson was “a day at a time.” Hope is he’ll get back on the field but there’s a lot of uncertainty when it comes to blood clots. Jackson will be allowed in jog throughs but no physical field work at this time.

3 Immediate Takeaways from Rams Training Camp

    1. Stetson Bennett is a much improved quarterback

    2. Defense was ready to compete from sunrise with Nate Landman looking particularly impressive.

    3. Jarquez Hunter. Relentless physicality

Five Takeaways From Rams 2025 Training Camp Day One
The Los Angeles Rams got after it on Wednesday

    Brock Vierra

    https://www.si.com/nfl/rams/stetson-bennett-sean-mcvay-davante-adams-nate-landman

The Los Angeles Rams are back in full swing as they took to the practice fields of Loyola Marymount for the first time this season. After many great sessions of traing and competetion, here are my five main takeaways from day one.

    1. The Rams have a special, cerebral player in Nate Landman. Landman continually snuffed out the run and play action, making critical decisions that prohibited the ball from being thrown downfield. Landman appears to be the difference maker that will take this defense from explosive to dominating.

    2. Stetson Bennett looked fantastic. He was making smart decisions, solid throws, and outperformed Jimmy Garoppolo. I asked Sean McVay about his thoughts regarding Bennett’s performance.

“I thought he did a nice job. I was really pleased with Jimmy, I thought he had great command,” said McVay. “Then I thought Stetson came in and really managed the second offense really well. There was a lot of instances where he’s going against the first group. I thought he was good with his decision making, showed some good movement. I thought he changed his arm slot and was able to get the ball where the coverage dictated. I was pleased with Stetson. [Rams Quarterback Coach] Dave [Ragone] does an excellent job with our quarterbacks as a whole, and I thought both those guys did a nice job today.”

    3. If Jimmy Garoppolo needs to play, the Rams would need to restructure their offense, making Davante Adams the priority target. Garoppolo didn’t have the best day but it’s also his first day throwing again. He needs to get into rhythm. However, it’s clear certain elements of the offense will not work when he’s in so if he does see the field, the Rams will need to change things up and looking at how often he targeted Adams, it would be the same approach the Vikings did with Justin Jefferson to unlock Sam Darnold.

However, Garoppolo did run in a touchdown and was immediately dapped up by Adams with both men smiling, so any thought that there are issues from their time with the Raiders can easily be put as false.

    4. Jarquez Hunter is a bulldog. Keep in mind that this was day one and players were in jerseys and shorts, no pads. Hunter tried to run through the entire defense, sprinting upfield long after the play was over. He wants it badly and he’s taking no prisoners with Rams’ defenders having to corral him with the most effort they spent on run defense the whole day.

    5. The Rams defense came to play. Jared Verse led the troops with boisterous noise as Quentin Lake added to the talk. The defense as a whole was firing, locking down the Rams in the secondary with Charles Woods in particular having an outstanding play.

Woods pressed Puka Nacua at the line of scrimmage, released at the perfect time, jumped the pass, but an easy pick-six fell out of his grasp. Not a bad day at all.

10 Observations from from Day 2 of 2025 Rams Training Camp: Puka Nacua shines, RBs breaking off big runs, plus notes on Nate Landman, Cobie Durant and Emmanuel Forbes

    Stu Jackson & Wyatt Miller

    https://www.therams.com/news/10-observations-from-from-day-2-of-2025-rams-training-camp-puka-nacua-shines-rbs-breaking-off-big-runs-plus-notes-on-nate-landman-cobie-durant-and-emmanuel-forbes

Senior staff writer Stu Jackson spent the evening watching the defense, while staff writer Wyatt Miller watched the offense. Notes on each unit below.

    Offense

    1) Davante Adams, Tyler Higbee and Rob Havenstein get day off. Head coach Sean McVay explained that the second day of each training camp block will serve as a veteran rest day. That will allow them to see the field together as much as possible throughout the rest of camp. They were still on the field coaching up their teammates, but didn’t participate in practice.

    2) Puka Nacua steals the show. Jared Verse said it best: “Puka’s a psychopath.” Nacua caught a flurry of passes over the middle on Thursday and was the most targeted receiver of the afternoon. He leapt to corral a pass from Jimmy Garoppolo over the middle and then ended the day with a falling touchdown grab between defenders, after which his teammates came to pat him on the helmet.

    3) Terrance Ferguson displays strong hands. Stetson Bennett targeted Ferguson often. He caught everything that was thrown his way, whether it was on his body or above his head, before turning upfield.

    4) Running backs break some big rushes. Both Kyren Williams and Blake Corum found holes in the defense for chunk gains on Thursday. Corum made some quick cuts on a carry up the middle and turned it into a house call, while Williams exploded through the first level untouched for a big gain into the secondary.

    5) Bennett shows flashes again. Whether it was an early strike to tight end Davis Allen on a seam route or a scramble for a touchdown in red zone drills, Bennett made his presence felt on Thursday. His pocket presence was noticeable and he fit the ball into some tight windows throughout the day, including on an early completion to Drake Stoops, a completion that Bennett celebrated with a little jig.

    Defense

    6) Play of the day went to safety Tanner Ingle. During team drills, he took advantage of a Bennett pass deflected into the air by Derion Kendrick, corralling it for an interception.

    7) Landman in command. Linebackers coach Greg Williams told theRams.com during OTAs that Landman was transitioning “seamlessly” into Los Angeles’ defense, and also that “he’s come in and guys respect him just from where he’s been and what he’s done.” That was evident throughout Thursday’s practice. Whenever the defense huddled, he consistently had the eyes and attention of every teammate pre-snap, which says a lot about the respect he has already commanded in such a short amount of time.

    8) Training camp is for experimenting. Verse made a concerted effort to work the edge throughout Thursday’s practice, which he said was by design after specifically focusing on his counter and inside moves in Wednesday’s practice.

    9) Pass rush getting after it. One of the defensive front’s best moments on Thursday was a pressure generated against Garoppolo in red zone drills that forced him into an incomplete pass – one that safety Quentin Lake was in coverage for and nearly intercepted by the sideline. Lake’s effort and near-pick had the entire defense fired up and celebrating with him.

    10) Continued promising performances at cornerback. Cornerback Cobie Durant picked up where he left off on Wednesday, breaking up a pass in the end zone. Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. likewise put together back-to-back strong practices.

“I’ve been really pleased with (Forbes),” McVay said. “We talked about him a lot in the spring, a guy that did a great job in the weight room of being able to put on some weight to be able to play this game while also not losing the functional movement and some of the things that have made him a guy that was a first-round pick.”

    Adam Grosbard@AdamGrosbard
Good second day of practice for Rams RB Blake Corum. Even for touch, he was making guys miss with his cuts

And you can really see Jarquez Hunter’s speed on the field. Bounced one run outside and was off for a 20 yard gain.

    Grosbard, from https://www.dailynews.com/2025/07/23/coleman-shelton-brings-calming-presence-back-to-rams-offensive-line/

After a year in Chicago, Coleman Shelton is back at center for the Rams, signing back with the team on a two-year contract this offseason and bringing a calming presence to the Rams’ offensive line.

“The command, the communication, that’s such an important part,” head coach Sean McVay said. “That rapport between the center and the quarterback and how that echoes from inside out. You hear our guards communicating more. I think it’ll be great. I have so much confidence in what Beaux Limmer’s going to be for our football team down the line, I think for him to be able to see how Coleman runs the show will only make him better.”

Since his return to L.A., teammates have lauded Shelton for his attention to detail and the preparation he puts in before practice and games. And while Wednesday’s practice at Loyola Marymount was uneven for the line – the Rams’ pass rush won frequently and had backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo under pressure for much of the day – Shelton came away encouraged with the foundation his group is building.

3 Immediate Takeaways from Rams TC

    1. Whittington and Mumpfield are playing like starters

    2. Quentin Lake was phenomenal the whole day..except for when Mumpfield changed directions on him

    3. Nate Landman…just wow. Absolutely incredible stuff.

    from https://theramswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/rams/2025/07/27/rams-training-camp-takeaways-practice-players-standout/85394389007/

Nate Landman has emerged as the leader at inside linebacker

Before camp began, it looked like a four-horse race at inside linebacker with Landman, Omar Speights, Chris Paul Jr. and Troy Reeder. After one week of practice, it’s clear Landman has emerged as the frontrunner in that group.

He was wearing the green dot in Friday’s jog-through and has been working with the first-team defense, relaying calls from Chris Shula to his teammates on the field. Sean McVay couldn’t be more impressed by the Rams’ offseason addition, saying he’s “done a great job leading the way for that group.”

“He’s been awesome. He’s a great communicator,” McVay said. “He’s got great command. He’s got the ability to elevate people. He’s got a great feel for attacking the football. He got another punch-out today. I just like the way that this guy’s got a great vibe. He’s just got some natural leadership traits and communication skills where he understands what’s going on from an all-22 perspective. I think when you’re talking about a guy that’s at that inside linebacker position, it’s key and critical. He’s done a great job leading the way for that group.”

If he can put together a breakout season, it’ll elevate the play of the entire defense after the Rams struggled at that position last year.

Los Angeles Rams Camp Day 4 Recap Including Rookie Standout

    Nikko Buenavidez, w/ LAFB

    * https://www.lafbnetwork.com/nfl/la-rams/la-rams-news/los-angeles-rams-camp-day-4-recap-including-rookie-standout/

The Los Angeles Rams wrapped up Day 4 of training camp with high energy on both sides of the ball.

Veterans like Davante Adams and Kyren Williams continued to set the tone, while rookie Konata Mumpfield, Xavier Smith, and Blake Corum flashed with standout plays.

The defense made timely stops and created turnovers, while the offense leaned heavily on its running backs in the pass game. A few key injuries emerged, including an update on Matthew Stafford’s back.

    Los Angeles Rams Offense

Davante Adams continues to dominate reps. McVay called him “an amazing football mind.” He’s leading by example and looks like he could challenge Puka as the top WR.

Kyren Williams looks explosive again. He’s been active in the pass game and is showing elite burst.

Blake Corum is settling in. The rookie is finding his footing and running more confidently.

RBs were heavily used as pass catchers for the fourth straight day, clearly a new core part of the offense.

Tutu Atwell got behind the defense on a deep route but couldn’t connect with Garoppolo.

Jordan Whittington remains steady and reliable. Caught a touchdown from Jimmy and was a frequent target for Bennett.

Los Angeles Rams Rookie Konata Mumpfield had his best day. Created separation consistently and made a contested sideline catch from Bennett.

Xavier Smith hauled in a deep ball from Bennett for a chunk play down the sideline.

Tight ends are splitting roles. Ferguson is being featured more in the passing game, while Higbee is primarily blocking.

Jimmy Garoppolo was efficient at times but inconsistent. Took a sack and threw a pick.

    Los Angeles Rams Defense

Troy Reeder picked off Jimmy G. Solid day for the veteran LB.

Nate Landman forced a fumble on Davis Allen during red zone work, recovered by Darious Williams. McVay praised Landman’s communication and leadership. He’s been the starting cover LB.

Byron Young consistently beat tackles and applied pressure. Also chased down Jarquez Hunter on a wide run.
Jared Verse was disruptive again. Had to be coached by McVay on managing his edge, but the intensity is real.

    Injury Updates

Matthew Stafford is week-to-week with back soreness, per McVay.

Ahkello Witherspoon is dealing with a calf injury.

Chris “Pooh” Paul Jr. is also dealing with a calf injury. The Rams are being cautious with his recovery.

10 Observations from Day 4 of Rams Training Camp: ILB Nate Landman continues to impress and a competitive 2-minute drill

    Wyatt Miller & Stu Jackson

    https://www.therams.com/news/10-observations-from-day-4-of-rams-training-camp-ilb-nate-landman-continues-to-impress-and-a-competitive-2-minute-drill

LOS ANGELES – Day 4 of Rams Training Camp presented by UNIFY Financial Credit Union was the longest yet, and featured some spectacular plays on both sides of the ball.

On defense, inside linebacker Nate Landman continues to shine while outside linebackers Jared Verse and Byron Young made some noise. Offensively, competitive situation drills and deep passing headlined the day.

Senior staff writer Stu Jackson spent the afternoon watching the offense, while staff writer Wyatt Miller watched the defense. Here are notes on each unit:

    Offense

    1) A back-and-forth two-minute drill. This situational work was the most competitive period of the day, with the first team offense going against the first-team defense. After quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had a pair of passes broken up by cornerbacks Cobie Durant and Emmanuel Forbes (one each), he responded with an intermediate completion to Puka Nacua, then a deep completion to Davante Adams before spiking the ball to stop the clock for a series of field goal attempts by kicker Josh Karty.

    2) Going deep. One of Garoppolo’s best passes of the day came on a ball he launched down the left sideline to Adams, who made the catch look easy.

    3) Going deep Part II. Quarterback Stetson Bennett also had an impressive deep completion when he connected with wide receiver Xavier Smith for a big gain during team drills.

    4) Konata Mumpfield impressing. While most of the attention has been on Nacua, Adams, Tutu Atwell and Jordan Whittington so far, rookie Mumpfield was a standout on Saturday with the movement and separation skills he displayed. His best catch of the day was on a short pass near the sideline from Bennett in tight coverage during team drills.

    5) Whittington remains consistent. The second-year wide receiver was once again a reliable target for Bennett throughout team drills, and also hauled in a impressive touchdown reception during team drills on a perfectly-placed pass by Garoppolo.

    Defense

    6) ILB Pooh Paul and CB Ahkello Witherspoon out with calf injuries. McVay said they are “being smart” with Paul, but did not give a specific timeline, and said Witherspoon is “day-to-day” as both nurse calf injuries.

    7) Nate Landman displays command of the field and huddle. Landman set the defensive sideline into uproars when he punched the ball out of tight end Davis Allen’s hands during red zone drills, and the fumble was recovered by cornerback Darious Williams. He was a leader in the huddle once again and McVay was complimentary about his leadership skills.

“He’s a great communicator,” McVay said. “He’s got great command. He’s got the ability to elevate people. He’s got a great feel for attacking the football… He’s just got some natural leadership traits and communication skills where he understands what’s going on from an All-22 perspective. And I think when you’re talking about a guy that’s at that inside linebacker position, it’s key and critical, and he’s done a great job leading the way for that group.”

    8) Young gets consistent penetration. Young beat multiple opposing tackles to pressure the quarterback and collect some sacks, or at least they would have been if contact was permitted. His bull rush was powerful, his moves were twitchy and his quickness was on full display. He also ran down speedy rookie Jarquez Hunter on a run to the outside before he could turn the corner. It looked like Young’s offseason pilates training has paid off.

    9) Verse’s competitive edge comes out. Verse was hounding the quarterback all day. His constant trash talk and aggressiveness led to a teaching moment with McVay.

“One of the things that makes Jared great is that edge that he plays with,” McVay said. “I can remember it’s the same things that Aaron (Donald) and I used to talk about when he was playing… You don’t want to take that away from him, but you want to make sure that you’re able to reset from one snap to the next. We always talk about, let’s respond, let’s not react, and I like the way that he finished practice.”

    10) Troy Reeder picks off Bennett. Near the end of practice, Bennett tried to thread the ball between defenders in the middle of the field, but Reeder leapt in front to snag the interception.
