I can confirm @TomPelissero report that Rams RB Cam Akers tore his Achilles this week and will be out for the season, according to a source with knowledge of the injury. Brutal for the second-year back, who was poised to take the lead role this year and has worked hard to do so.

Darrell Henderson, Xavier Jones, Jake Funk and Raymond Calais currently the rostered backs. Henderson has plenty of game experience, of course, but durability has continued to be a question and he was not fully healthy this spring per McVay. Rams may need to make a move.

I’ll add, and take this for what you will, that if Rams don’t make a move before the season opens, it quietly says a lot about their expectations for Xavier Jones. Again, taking nothing away from Henderson who is very talented – but durability is a real question right now.

Brutal blow for L.A., which loses its leading rusher from last season a week before camp begins.

Akers news is a blow to the Rams offense and more importantly, to the player. He is a GREAT kid.

One note: I don’t see the Rams panicking and rushing out to sign a veteran replacement in the coming days.

Actually thought the RB room needed an addition prior to the Akers injury. Hard to trust 3 guys in Jones, Calais and Funk who’ve never carried the rock in an NFL game.

Henderson’s only carried the ball more than 15 times once in his pro career. Bring someone else in!

Out for the year…… unfortunately sometimes players never recover from this type injury.

Bummer….another season without a top RB for Stafford….

    Huge loss.

But I think Henderson has a lot of talent too, if healthy, and Jake Funk will surprise people.

This is really bad news, but I think the Rams’ O will still be excellent. Might force McVay to become a Martzist, from that famous sub-branch of Frankfurt, the Los Angeles School.

Wouldn’t surprise me, however, if they make a splash trade. It’s not as if they’re out of draft picks, or anything.

    Oh, wait . . .

    Which leaves them with . . . ???

Sean McVay on ESPN 710 right now: Team likes young depth and will gauge how they handle opportunities through camp and joint practices. “I don’t know that veteran route is something we’ll rule out, but it’s not something we’re looking at right now.”

It did not take Jones long to make an impact after driving the three hours from Spring, Texas, to the SMU campus. He started 6 of 12 games played and set a school record in 2015 by scoring 10 rushing touchdowns as a true freshman (152-634-4.2 rushing; 27-214-7.9 receiving). Injuries to his hamstring and shoulder limited him to two games in 2016 (15-140-9.3, one TD rushing), when he received a medical redshirt. Jones bounced back to lead the Mustangs in rushing in 2017, starting 12 of 13 games, covering 1,075 yards and scoring nine times on 182 carries (5.9 average), and catching 14 passes for 84 yards (6.0 average). He had a lesser role on offense as a junior (69-311-4.2, two TDs rushing; 10-95-9.5 receiving, one start in 10 games) but became “the man” for the Mustangs in 2019. Jones was a first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection as a senior, leading his team with 1,276 yards (244 carries, 5.2 per) and finishing among the nation’s leaders with 23 touchdowns in 13 starts.

    Analysis
    By Lance Zierlein

    Overview

Common runner with decent size and a grinder’s mentality/skill set. Jones is just average athletically, lacking the wiggle and creativity to keep runs alive beyond their standard shelf life. He’s a determined runner with good lower-body power and forward lean who runs behind his pads and falls forward through contact. He lacks sideline-to-sideline range as a runner but can work outside the tackles in outside zone. There is nothing special that defines his game. He lacks versatility beyond the early downs, but his toughness and willful running style are positive traits.

    Strengths

Adequate size and rush with consistent toughness
Ate from the touchdown trough with 23 in 2019 and 45 for his career
Can elude early penetration and re-route his run
Adequate job of setting up and directing blocks
Power in his thighs to drive through arm tackles
Determined to drop pads and attack tacklers
Hands are adequate for swing passes and leak-outs
Willing as a contact-and-catch pass protector

    Weaknesses

Segmented with brief indecision as runner
    Pedestrian burst through the line
Doesn’t see and work two moves ahead
Hip tightness strains elusiveness on second level
Below-average speed and feet to win on the flanks
Not much of a third-down factor
    Delayed recognition in blitz-pickup assignments

This is pretty bad. None of the veteran names being floated look like a good idea to me. Gurley, Gore, Peterson…no, thanks. Hopefully they can find a CJ Anderson out there.

I think this calls for some real innovation. Use six O-linemen, and include a second-string D-lineman in the backfield — Copeland or Hoecht, perhaps — as blocker or carrier. Put Tutu back there now and then. Though, as Tom Hanks said in A League of the Rhone, “There is no Tutu in football!” So he’s gonna have to find another name.

Again, I think Henderson has a lot of talent, so it’s just a matter of staying on the field and away from the training room for him. Beyond that, I’d go with Funk before Jones. The name speaks for itself.

I’d actually love to see Gurley back in horns. Or Peterson. Don’t break the bank to do it. But they could help with 5-10 carries a game, if they’re willing.

yeah. i feel bad for akers. but this might be it for him.

one other running back has to step up. i don’t know much about jones. but funk has the ability. i just don’t know if he can stay healthy. again assuming they’re both healthy i actually think hendo/funk could be quite a formidable duo.

also. i think the tight ends are gonna have to feature more in this offense. but can hopkins or harris step up?

    Okay, Gurley makes sense.

Not to replace Akers, but to help. He knows the offense, he’s a good blocker, and a good presence in the locker room, and he’s a free agent. He doesn’t have to be the bell cow. Just make a few blocks, catch a few balls. Makes sense.

would gurley even want to come back?

Dunno, but he has to have faced reality by now. The Rams didn’t screw him. They are the reason he has as much money as he has, and he has to know it was because of his knees, and he hasn’t exactly proven them wrong in their diagnosis.

So I bet he can be lured back with a chance to play again for McVay in a reduced role, and take a shot at a Super Bowl.

NFL Draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah said Sunday that Jones is his best running back that didn’t land an invitation to Indianapolis for the annual draft showcase.

“Spent the day watching RBs w/o combine invitation,” Jeremiah wrote on Twitter. “Best of the bunch? SMU RB Xavier Jones. 5’11 208 (no pro day) Excellent vision, balance and toughness. Lacks elite top speed. Reliable in pass game.”

Might Rams be interested in bringing back Todd Gurley? Nope

    SAM FARMER

    https://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/story/2021-07-26/rams-bringing-back-todd-gurley

What the Rams plan to do at running back has yet to be determined.

What they don’t plan to do is more clear.

In his first face-to-face meeting with reporters Monday, coach Sean McVay dampened speculation of a reunion with free agent running back Todd Gurley, once the centerpiece of the Rams’ offense.

“I don’t think that’s something we’re exploring right now, just the veteran route,” said McVay, in search of answers at the position in the wake of the season-ending torn Achilles tendon Cam Akers sustained while working out last week. The Rams open training camp Wednesday at UC Irvine.

“Todd has obviously been a huge part of a lot of good things for the Rams. I know for me personally, I’m very grateful for all the good things that Todd did and what it meant for our team’s success and the leader that he was.”

After the Rams released him, Gurley signed with the Atlanta Falcons before last season and wound up running for 678 yards and nine touchdowns. Recently, Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson told TMZ Sports that re-signing Gurley would be a “no-brainer” for the Rams.

McVay didn’t permanently close the door on the possibility — “To say that you would never do it, you don’t want to pigeonhole yourself into that…” — but said he’s focused on the running backs currently on the roster, in particular Darrell Henderson.

“He’s the most established guy in that room,” McVay said of the third-year back who ran for 624 yards and five touchdowns last season. “You can see when he gets the ball in his hand and puts his foot in the ground, there’s a burst and he’s sturdy too.

“I think he is a complete back, very similar to how you’ve heard me talk about Cam. Our biggest challenge is not figuring out if he’s capable of doing it, it’s finding that sweet spot of, all right, how do we maximize Darrell Henderson while also getting some of these other guys involved?”

All that will be worked out during practice, and in games that count. McVay is sticking to his philosophy of resting starters in preseason games.

“I can promise you,” the coach said, “you’re not seeing Darrell Henderson in the preseason.”

A major part of establishing a running game is getting the right combination of blockers up front. Of primary concern is who is snapping the ball to new quarterback Matthew Stafford. Center Austin Blythe signed a free-agent deal with Kansas City, leaving a void at the position.

Still on the roster is Brian Allen, who started nine games in 2019 but has been sidelined for much of the last two seasons because of a knee injury.

The plan is to slide Austin Corbett from right guard to center.

“I feel really good about Austin’s ability to do that,” McVay said. “We know he has played really high-level ball at the guard position. Brian Allen has played good ball for us too. I think we’re really in the midst of figuring out what is the best collaboration and collection of those five guys looks like.”

He added: “When we line up the first-team period, Austin will take that first rep.”
