Personally, I like trading back on Day One, collecting picks, and then trading up later. With exceptions made for “generational” talent.
I also think it’s smart to seek at least one pick next year, every year. Doing this usually means gaining a full round in value, cuz next year’s picks are seen, obviously, as less valuable now.
Of course, GMs and coaches are under immense pressure to produce today, not necessarily long term. The future for them is now, as George Allen used to say.
On the trading down thingy: If I had been the Giants GM, for instance, there is just no way I’d stay put and take Daniel Jones. Trade down, grab some extra picks, and he’s gonna still be there. And even if he’s not, so what. If you stay in the Top 10 to 15, you’re likely going to find someone to really, really help your team, including good QBs, and you’ve just added more chances to do this.
I don’t buy the “they obviously really loved him” shtick. No smart GM thinks there is only one player in this draft that will improve their team. Any GM who does is gonna be out of work all too fast.
