Despite a 2-0 start, the Rams offense still has a few issues to work through — including scoring in the first half. Through two games, the Rams have scored only 19 of their 57 points in the first half. There is a consensus among Browns players and coaches ahead of Sunday’s matchup that Rams’ Aaron Donald is as good as it gets in the NFL.
“He’s probably the best player in the league, he’s been since he came out and was drafted, it’s just been that way,” Odell Beckham Jr. told reporters Wednesday. “If he’s not the best player in the league, [he’s] one of the most disruptive players I’ve ever seen.”
Donald has made five Pro Bowls and won two Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year awards since being drafted by the Rams in the first round of the 2014 draft. During that span he has 59 1/2 sacks, 98 tackles for loss and 151 quarterback hits.
There is no disputing his success on the field, and for the Browns, the offensive line players know they have their hands full.

Donald does only have two tackles this season, but both are for losses. He has two quarterback hits and his team is 2-0. He might not be making a statement to win a Defensive Player of the Year award yet, but he has been more than effective for a very good team already.
The Browns absolutely have their hands full and in a spot where they have struggled this year. After trading guard Kevin Zeitler to the Giants this offseason, the line has struggled to find consistency early in the year.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield has been sacked eight times in two games, which is tied for the third most in the league, and his performance has suffered as a result. His 38.7 QBR is 21st in the league behind quarterbacks like Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew. When Mayfield was sacked less than twice a game as a rookie, his QBR was 53.2.
Cleveland will have to account for a man Bitonio also calls “the best player in the league.” Coach Freddie Kitchens also drove home that fact in his press conference on Wednesday.
“Everybody knows this is a big challenge this week,” Kitchens said. “(Donald) is probably the most premier defensive player in the NFL.”

Cleveland’s bigger problem in this game, though, is being able to cover all of Los Angeles’ receivers. That offense is just getting warmed up.

Point spread: Rams, -3The Browns didn’t prove much with their win over the New York Jets on Monday night as they were facing a third-string quarterback for the large majority of the contest. Baker Mayfield hasn’t taken the leap that many expected to this point and it’s hard to to be impressed by the 3-points allowed by the Cleveland defense against New York when factoring in the competition. The fact that Tennessee lost to the Colts in Week 2 makes that 43-13 thumping of the Browns that much more concerning for the AFC North squad. Los Angeles, meanwhile, will be the toughest test they’ll face all year and it doesn’t look like they’ll be up for it on primetime.

Pleasant surprise: It has to be receiver Cooper Kupp. Ten months after Kupp underwent reconstructive knee surgery to repair a torn ACL, the third-year slot receiver has resumed his role as quarterback Jared Goff’s go-to receiver. In two games, Kupp has caught 12 passes for 166 yards. In a Week 2 win over the Saints, he took a 7-yard pass and turned it into a 66-yard catch-and-run.

Drew Brees’ thumb injury took a lot of juice out of Sunday’s NFC Championship Game rematch between New Orleans and Los Angeles, but don’t hate on the Rams if they don’t feel any less pleased about a convincing win. The offense remains out of sync when compared to the best times of the last two seasons under Sean McVay, but Sunday brought progress. The most impressive play? A gorgeous 57-yard rainbow from Jared Goff to Brandin Cooks to set up L.A.’s opening field goal. Cooper Kupp, meanwhile, has not skipped a beat following reconstructive knee surgery. He’s been Goff’s favorite receiver this season, leading the team with 19 targets. His 66-yard catch-and-run to the goal line showed speed and power that backs up the offseason reports that he’s more explosive now than he was before the ACL tear. The Rams are 2-0 and have yet to hit their stride. Good place to be.
CBS: 4th (4th)
At 2-0, the Rams have the look of a deep playoff team again. The defense appears much improved.

Seeing Cooper Kupp go for 120 yards was a great sign. He showed a lot of strength and explosion on a 66-yard catch-and-run that was just short of a touchdown. Coming off a torn ACL, it was fantastic to see Kupp look like he’s 100 percent.

It may not be sustainable, but 2-0 is still 2-0.

They’ve actually been managing Todd Gurley longer than you think, the tailback exceeding 20 carries in just one of his past 11 games.

Do you think that the call on Goff’s fumble was a bit blown out of proportion because it happened to the Saints? I’ve seen quick whistles before that kill plays.
Yes. To me it wasn’t a “quick” whistle. The referee called it exactly as he saw it, and did so with conviction and decisiveness. I’d much rather have that then indecisive. Upon further review, it was a throw. But in real time, he saw it differently and that isn’t all that unusual.
Is it taking Henderson a while to get on the field due to still learning the playbook?
No one has completely said that, but sense is there has been an adjustment for him in terms of how it works at this level in all phases. If I were him, I’m be following Todd and Malcolm around watching how it’s done at this level.
When if at all do you see Greg Gaines being a bigger part of the rotation?
I think as the year goes on it will get better, but I also believe they’ll give JSD every chance to settle in. I felt his second game was better than the opener, which was to be expected. Ideally they end up trading off in a rotation in which they’ll both benefit
Goff has had some uncharacteristic accuracy issues even without facing pressure which he seemed to clean up at the end of the Saints game.
I expected his overall game to take a step forward this year and I’d be surprised if it didn’t. That includes being better under pressure and against the zone. I think his accuracy issues on some of those throws are all fundamentally based. When he gets a little sloppy on the fundamentals, it shows.

I’ve been really impressed with the overall operation of the Rams defense the first two weeks, and talking to players on other teams they are absolutely doing a clever job in scheming/packaging. I suspect that will remain the case against the Browns

That’s more than you would normally have in the third year of a new coach, especially if it was an actual rebuild.
Plus a lot of the free agents who left are still players. McLeod, Jenkins, Johnson (though he was just benched), Joyner, Ogletree, Barron, Saffold.

DL played lights out vs one of the league’s best OL. Not only did the real AD show up but he also came back to the game after an injury to gut it out. SJD had a very strong game in the middle, I was really impressed with how he stuffed things up and was a big part of the reason why we played the run so well. And Brock might have had one of the best games I’ve seen from him since 2017. I mean damn. He moved around, got pressures, stuffed the run, and looked like the guy who is a team leader that leaves it all on the field we remember from a couple seasons ago.
Secondary had not only a great game plan, but executed it at a very high level. Receivers were blanketed on many of the plays. And the safeties just can’t say enough about them when they (and Littleton) hold a guy like Kamara down. Even with Brees out their performance was outstanding.
