    Brandon Staley enters his first year as outside linebackers coach for the Denver Broncos in 2019. He was hired by the club on Jan. 15, 2019.

    A 14-year coaching veteran, Staley spent the last two seasons coaching outside linebackers under Broncos Head Coach Vic Fangio in Chicago. He joined the Bears in 2017 after holding collegiate coaching roles at John Carroll University (2013, 2015-16), James Madison University (2014), University of Tennessee (2012), Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College (2010-11), University of St. Thomas (2009) and Northern Illinois University (2006-08).

    With Staley coaching outside linebackers the last two seasons in Chicago, the Bears tied for second in the NFL in sacks (92.0) and had the third-most sacks by a linebacker unit (51) in the league. Chicago led the NFL in takeaways over that span (58) while also ranking in the top-6 in the league in scoring defense (17.7 – 4th), total yards (299.7 – 6th) and rushing defense (80.0 – 2nd).

    In 2018, Staley helped coach a Bears defense that ranked among the NFL’s best in numerous categories, including scoring defense (17.7 ppg – 1st), takeaways (36 – 1st) total defense (299.7 ypg – 3rd), sacks (51 – 3rd) and third-down defense (34.2 – 4th). He coached Associated Press first-team All-Pro linebacker Khalil Mack, who joined J.J. Watt as the only players in the NFL with at least 12.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and 4 pass breakups.

    Only Watt and Aaron Donald had more quarterback hurries than Mack (27) during Staley’s only season coaching the perennial Pro Bowl linebacker.

    Prior to his arrival in Chicago, Staley spent three seasons (2013, 2015-16) as the defensive coordinator/secondary coach with John Carroll. In 2016, he helped John Carroll finish third in the nation in total defense (218.0), fourth in scoring defense (12.6 ppg) and seventh in passing defense (139.7 ypg) while earning National Coordinator of the Year honors in Division III. He was named Co-Assistant Coach of the Year in the Ohio Athletic Conference in 2013 when John Carroll ranked third nationally in pass defense efficiency.

    Staley spent 2014 as the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at James Madison, where under his guidance the defense ranked 11th in the nation in takeaways (28) and 13th in sacks per game (2.9). Before his first stint at John Carroll, he spent the 2012 season at Tennessee as a graduate assistant.

    Staley served as the associate head coach/defensive coordinator for two seasons (2010-11) at Hutchinson C.C., helping three players develop into NFL Draft picks: wide receiver/return specialist Cordarrelle Patterson (1st Rd., Min., ’13), defensive end Markus Golden (2nd Rd., Ari., ’15) and linebacker De’Vondre Campbell (4th Rd., Atl., ‘16). He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at North Illinois (2006-08) before working with defensive lineman and special teams at Division III St. Thomas in 2009.

    A two-year starter at quarterback and team captain for the University of Dayton, Staley posted a 16-5 record for the Flyers from 2003-04. He completed his fifth collegiate season at Mercyhurst University with his twin brother, Jason.

    Staley, a native of Perry, Ohio, was born on Dec. 10, 1982.

    The hire was likely made based on the performance of the run defense against opponents. The Rams have the sixth-best record when it comes to rushing touchdowns at nine. Meanwhile, the Rams were 25th in the league with 15 ceded rushing TDs.

    Having Staley as DC will help shore up the holes in the rushing defense. Moreover, keeping the rest of the defensive coaching staff would mean that the pass defense will likely stay the same. If they manage to improve their rushing game, their 13th-ranked offense should easily bounce back to the top-ten positions.

    Speculation could only take us so far, though. It will take until September for Rams fans to figure out if he is the right man for the job.

    O’Connell joined Washington as quarterbacks coach in 2017 and added passing game coordinator to his title before becoming offensive coordinator in 2019.

    He began his NFL coaching career as quarterbacks coach in Cleveland in 2015 and went to the 49ers as an offensive assistant a year later.

    O’Connell was expected to join Ron Rivera’s staff, remaining in Washington, and then was listed as a candidate for the Eagles’ offensive coordinator job. He also might have joined Josh McDaniels if McDaniels gets the Browns’ job.

    But none of that happened, and Los Angeles is O’Connell’s next move.

    After losing two coordinators in less than a week, Sean McVay is quickly re-staffing in Los Angeles.

    The Rams are hiring former Redskins offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell as their offensive coordinator and Broncos outside linebackers coach Brandon Staley as their new defensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday night, per a source.

    Los Angeles parted ways with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips this week after three seasons. Longtime special teams coach John Fassel is expected to join Mike McCarthy’s staff in Dallas. L.A. did not have an offensive coordinator last season, and Rapoport reported McVay was “stretched thin.”

    Both McConnell and Staley spent time with McVay this week before he made the hires, Rapoport reported.

    McConnell, 34, spent the last three seasons in D.C. succeeding McVay on Jay Gruden’s offensive coaching staff as QB coach, passing game coordinator and then OC. He was previously an NFL quarterback for five seasons and an offensive assistant in Cleveland and San Francisco.

    Staley, 37, has spent three seasons coaching outside linebackers in the NFL, all under Vic Fangio, who hired him with the Chicago Bears and then brought him along to Denver when Fangio became Broncos coach. A former quarterback at the University of Dayton, Staley has 15 years of coaching experience, rising from Hutchinson Community College in 2011 to James Madison in 2014 to Division III college John Carroll in 2013 and 2015 to the Bears in 2017.

    Going from a 72-year-old veteran defensive coordinator to a 37-year-old first-time DC and a 34-year-old OC will be quite an adjustment for McVay, 33, and the Rams, but one the youthful franchise is used to by now.

    I’m also told that the plan is for Sean McVay to continue to call plays, which is just fine. He now has O’Connell to assist in all facets, both in game prep and during games.

    Lewis repeatedly insisted that The Day the Clown Cried would never be released because it is an embarrassingly “bad work” of which he was ashamed.

    Plot

    Lewis plays a washed-up German circus clown named Helmut Doork during the beginning of World War II and the Holocaust. Although he was once a famous performer who toured North America and Europe with the Ringling Brothers, Doork is now past his prime and receives little respect. After Doork causes an accident during a show, the head clown convinces the circus owner to demote Doork. Upon returning home, Doork confides his problems to his wife Ada, and she encourages him to stand up for himself. After going back to the circus, Helmut overhears the circus owner agreeing to fire him after the head clown issues an ultimatum. A distraught Helmut is arrested later by the Gestapo for ranting about Germany and drunkenly mocking Adolf Hitler in a bar. Following an interrogation at the Gestapo headquarters, he is imprisoned in a Nazi camp for political prisoners. For the next three to four years, he remains there while hoping for a trial and a chance to plead his case.

    He tries to maintain his status among the other inmates by bragging about what a famous performer he once was. His only friend in prison is a good-hearted German named Johann Keltner, whose reason for being interned is never fully revealed but is implied to be his outspoken opposition to the Nazis. The camp receives a large group of Jewish prisoners, including several children. The other prisoners goad Doork into performing for them, but he does not realize he actually is not very good. The other prisoners beat him up and leave him in the courtyard to sulk about his predicament. He sees a group of Jewish children laughing at him from the other side of the camp, where the Jewish prisoners are being kept away from everyone else. Delighted to be appreciated again, Helmut performs for them and gains an audience for a while, until the new prison commandant orders that he stop.

    Helmut learns that fraternizing with Jewish prisoners is strictly forbidden. Unable to leave the children in a state of unhappiness, he continues to perform for them. The SS guards break up one of his performances; they knock him unconscious and warn the children away from the barbed-wire fence. Horrified, Keltner fights off one of the guards, but he is quickly cornered and beaten to death. Doork is placed in solitary confinement. Seeing a use for him, the commandant assigns him to help load Jewish children on trains leading out of the internment camp, with the promise his case will be reviewed. By a twist of fate, he ends up accidentally accompanying the children on a boxcar train to Auschwitz, and he is eventually used, in Pied Piper fashion, to help lead the Jewish children to their deaths in the gas chamber.

    Knowing the fear the children will feel, he begs to be allowed to spend the last few moments with them. Leading them to the “showers,” he becomes increasingly dependent on a miracle, but there is none. He is so filled with remorse that he remains with them, taking a young girl’s hand and walks with them into the chamber

    FYI: #Rams C Austin Blythe underwent successful clean-up surgery on both shoulders this week. Blythe played through a nagging ankle injury throughout season & made a successful transition from G to C at the midway point to help solidify a Rams o-line that finished season strong.

    I’m with ya.

    I personally tend to doubt the “performance” narrative. Especially with Fassel. I mean, one down year from STs should not be the grounds to fire Bones. In fact Dallas hired him presumably because they want to turn their STs around and he’s a good one to do it.
