Higbee’s late-season emergence is showing exactly why the Rams gave him a four-year extension in early September.
With his 104 yards on a team-high nine catches, the former Western Kentucky star posted his fourth consecutive game of 100 or receiving yards.
How rare is the feat Higbee accomplished? He’s only the fourth tight end to do so, according to NFL research, joining Travis Kelce, Jimmy Graham (twice), and Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez.

The dude has been invisible for years and suddenly the Rams give him a big contract and he’s still quiet as a church mouse until TE Gerald Everett gets hurt and then… BOOM. Hygz had another dominant performance even with the return of Everett (who had no catches off one target).
Coach Sean McVay called a solid game, putting his players in arms reach of the victory, they just needed to earn it. Losses are never acceptable, but the Rams were playing a very good Niners team and it was encouraging to see McVay coach them up to such a competitive level, which probably made the loss even more heartbreaking.

Robert Woods and Tyler Higbee have carried the offense in recent weeks, and that was the case on Saturday. They both went over 100 yards receiving, catching 17 passes combined. They’ve clearly become Goff’s favorite targets, especially on the bootlegs to the right side.
The Rams gave up 34 points, but the defense was great until the final drive. Jalen Ramsey was especially good, breaking up two passes, including an interception. Darious Williams more than held his own in his first start, also deflecting one pass and picking off another. On the night, San Francisco only had 334 total yards, 60 of which came on the final drive.
Aaron Donald and Dante Fowler Jr. had strong performances, combining for four sacks, five QB hits and four tackles for loss. The Rams had six sacks as a team with Morgan Fox and Samson Ebukam recording the other two.

After coming out of the toughest three-game late-season stretch in NFL history with a 2-1 record, the 49ers emerged banged up and exhausted. The result was a stunning loss to the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday that has the 49ers needing to win out to claim the top spot in the NFC.
The Rams are healthier than the 49ers right now, and they have the running game to attack San Francisco’s area of weakness on defense. If Jimmy Garoppolo stays cold, like he was last Sunday, the Rams can upset the balance of power and get a revenge win over their long-time NFC West rival.

A few uncharacteristic performances by the Rams hasn’t changed 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan’s opinion of the team heading into Saturday’s game at Levi’s Stadium.
“I thought they were pretty good then and I see them pretty similar now,” Shanahan told Los Angeles reporters on a conference call this week. “I think they’ve been one of the better teams here over the last month. I thought they were playing pretty good when we played them last time.”

The last time was Week 6, a 20-7 win for San Francisco at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, featured two different teams in terms of personnel.L.A. played without starting running back Todd Gurley and linebacker Clay Matthews, who were sidelined by injuries. Its offensive line has since lost three starters to injury.
Its secondary has changed due to injuries and trades as well. Cornerback Aqib Talib, who didn’t play against the 49ers because of a rib injury, was placed on injured reserve and later traded to the Dolphins. Cornerback Marcus Peters was traded to the Ravens, helping pave the way for a trade with the Jaguars for cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Safety John Johnson III was placed on injured reserve. Fourth-year cornerback Troy Hill and rookie safety Taylor Rapp have emerged as starters.
The 49ers, meanwhile, acquired wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders the same day the Rams acquired Ramsey.
“I know they added Jalen, I know they got Clay back, which helps a ton,” Shanahan said. “I think their defense – you take away a couple games this year, the Baltimore game and stuff or maybe Tampa, where it statistically got out of hand and they’re without a doubt a top-five defense.”
Additionally, after the seven-point output against the Niners, the Rams averaged 22.4 points per game over their next eight games. Combined with the Rams’ improvements on defense, Shanahan isn’t going to underestimate them.
“That’s why I think if they can find a way to get into the playoffs, they’re going to be as scary as any team,” Shanahan said.
Beyond the new additions and returnees, there’s also the fact that Los Angeles has never lost two games in a season to a division opponent in the McVay era.
“I mean Sean is as good as it gets. Sean’s one of the top coaches in this league – does a hell of a job,” Shanahan said. “… Sean’s a good coach and he’s got a real good team. So, it doesn’t surprise me the stats you just said, but I know Sean’s always going to give them the best chance.”
