wvParticipantIts amazing to me, that a bunch of NFL asshole billionaire capitalists created this NFL cap thing. I cant believe its lasted this long, either. I know Jerry Jones has pushed against it from time to time, but in the end he’s always backed off.
Turns out that when a rising tide lifts all boats, it’s a good thing.
Who would have thunk?
Indeed. …didnt the 49ers owner try and cheat back in the 90s or something? I think I’m remembering that correctly. Tried to give players money under the table to get around the Cap.

wvParticipantIn the NFL its more of a meritocracy type thing. I think.
The NFL model is better. I don’t know enough about it to know why. But in the NFL, you don’t get owners who pocket the gate/etc. profits, and just let team equity grow, all while functionally acting as a farm system for other teams. AFAIK,all teams spend ~ the same amount on payroll, give or take a percent.
That is why, though, I think a cap isn’t enough. There has to be a window. You can’t let the Marlins spend 27% of their revenue on payroll while the Mets spend 90% of their revenue, especially when the Mets have substantially more revenue.
Well, the NFL cap does solve that issue if I’m not mistaken, because the cap isnt just about the top-end it also takes care of the floor. Every team HAS to spend to the cap. No team could do the ‘Pirates’ thing and just pocket money. There is a ceiling but also a floor.

wvParticipantNow, does anyone really think the Dodgers or the Blue Jays would be in the World Series if they payrolls like the Chicago White Sox ( 78 million)
Do you think the Pirates would be in the playoffs if they spent $125 million more on salaries? Because they made $200m in profit last year. Where’s that money going? Don’t just look at the gross salary numbers. Look at the % of revenue that is going to salaries.
I’m conflicted on this. Money is a factor, and a lot of money is an advantage. One of them. And a salary cap might compress the top somewhat. But I don’t think it would “level” the field. It might make the playoffs a bit more likely for the teams in the second tier, but I think the Pirates’ business model is to keep salaries low, and keep the profits for themselves.
well, you make an interesting point about the profits and the Pirates ‘losing is more profitable’ business model. I’m not bizness-savvy enuff to really analyze that stuff.
But i do know whether its my simplistic-version or your more-nuanced-version — in MLB MONEY makes the league a joke. And the NFL has solved all that. The NFL is a near perfect system, it seems to me.
And believe me, i’m not fixated on Pirates. Its the whole bottom-third of MLB, not just the Pirates.
I keep thinking about that graphic up there of yours showing the World Series winners over the last quarter century. Only one from the bottom tier. That says it all to me. There could be no such diagram in the NFL. Because there IS no ‘bottom tier’ in money.

Can you elaborate more on why you think you might struggle in a KC offense?Kurt Warner@kurt13warner
From what I see in the outside, it’s not as defined as I would like! The route combinations don’t always line up with my sense of timing, spacing and putting players in conflict… there is a bit more free-lancing within the structure of plays that is not something I liked!I wanted everything detailed and defined by guys around me, so I could be more definitive with my reads and anticipation… more free flowing movement would have given me more hesitation, even though I think I “FEEL” (seeing spaces & openings not everyone can see) the game in a very similar manner to PM2!
So. You are raising the freelancing debate again. I see.

wvParticipantOk, lets look at the 10 2025 MLB playoff teams.
Of the ten teams,
6 had top-third payrolls.
3 had mid-tier payrolls.
1 had bottom-third payroll. That is pretty typical. 1 out of 10 from the bottom-third. 9 out of 10 from the upper tiers.
Now, does anyone really think the Dodgers or the Blue Jays would be in the World Series if they payrolls like the Chicago White Sox ( 78 million)
Payroll rankings:
Dodgers 1st ( 350 million. world series)
Yankees 4th
Cubs 5th
Padres 6th
Toronto 7th ( 255 million. world series)
Boston 10th
—
Mariners 11th
Tigers 14th
Reds 19th

Cleveland 26th

wvParticipantNFC West is not very good at running.
Rams are 22nd in rushing so far. (103 yards per game.)
Arizona is 18th.
Seattle is 20th.
San Fran is 25th.
wvParticipantSF radio guys more upbeat about the 49ers than at any time in the past year or more.
Why not? They are 5-2, are 3-0 in the NFC West, and have a last place schedule. Kittle’s back. Aiyuk, Pearsall, and Purdy are expected back this season, and probably Jennings. Mac Jones has not been a drop-off from Purdy in the least.
Mainly, they love Robert Salah and McCaffrey’s return to form last night. Optimism reigns out here, and it’s depressing.
Yeah, and as a lot of talking heads have noted, so far, this might be Shannahan’s best coaching job. They have had a shit-ton of KEY injuries and free agent losses and they dont have a star QB — and it has not mattered. Same with Tampa, btw.
One possible future in the omnivers that makes me smile, is this one — San Fran sweeps the Rams and wins the West. But the Rams make it as a wildcard. And they play in the playoffs. And McVay goes 2-0 against Shannahan in the Playoffs.

wvParticipantI would like to complain about
the fact that Stafford threw a couple 1 yard TD passes. Its unmanly. The Eagles would have tush-pushed their way into the endzone.
The rams are now a finesse team.
w
v
wvParticipantOdd game. Stafford only passes for 182 yards — but gets 5 TD passes.
Rams only get 271 yards on offense. Jags have 358.
And yet, the Rams had 5 more first downs — 26 to 21.Rams had 7 sacks. Jags had zero.
Jags had 13 penalties. I believe two of those wiped out 14 points for the Jags.
Rams had 5 penalties.Jags looked like they were out of sync all day. They fell down, dropped passes, missed open receivers.
I dunno what the hell that was. 5-2. Could be 7-0.

wvParticipantI know its ‘cutesy’ but i like the idea of ‘dog walk analysis’. It should be a Thing.
wvParticipantThe Jaguars listed Travon Walker as full, Robert Hainsey as limited
The Jaguars posted their initial injury report for Week 7. To nobody’s surprise, linebacker Devin Lloyd and tight end Quintin Morris won’t be available. Before the team flew to London, both of them had been ruled out.
Ventrell Miller, a third-round pick in 2023, will fill in for Lloyd. On the other hand, there’s a strong chance that Jacksonville will promote tight end Jordan Atkins to the active roster via standard elevation after signing him before making the trip. If he suits up, he’ll be behind Johnny Mundt and Hunter Long on the depth chart.
For the moment, though, Lloyd and Morris are the only players who won’t suit up. Center Robert Hainsey got the limited designation while he recovers from a hamstring injury he suffered in Week 5. Rookie Jonah Monheim stepped in his place and got the starting nod against the Seattle Seahawks.
If Hainsey isn’t good to go, Monheim will make his second start in a row. It’s important to note that the Jaguars gave up seven sacks and 33 total pressures in the loss to Seattle. However, Monheim only allowed one pressure. Based on his promising outing, it’s possible that the coaching staff may not be in a hurry to get Hainsey back on the field in Week 7.
Apart from Hainsey, safety Eric Murray (neck) and wide receiver Dyami Brown (wide receiver) were limited in practice. Then again, they’ve previously popped up on the injury report but still played, so both of them should be good to go against the Rams.
The biggest news from the injury report, though, is probably that Travon Walker was a full participant in practice. The former Georgia Bulldog is dealing with a wrist injury. He underwent surgery before Week 5 and missed a game. Walker returned for the Seahawks game but was on a snap count. Having more time to recover, he could have a bigger role against the Rams.
Having Travon Walker is huge, but the Jaguars O-Line must play better
The Jaguars should be thrilled that Travon Walker has no restrictions. Having him around will increase the odds of rattling Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. However, the biggest question mark ahead of the game is the offensive line. It may not matter if Robert Hainsey doesn’t suit up, as Jonah Monheim could fill in for him. However, the rest of the group must fare much better after their underwhelming outing in Week 6.
Trevor Lawrence was routinely pressured against the Seahawks, and the Jags couldn’t get the running game going. What’s surprising is that the Jacksonville offensive line was among the best in the NFL early in the season, but somewhere along the way, the unit suffered a steep dropoff. They must buck the trend.
