KeymasterAlso, how different these Rams are going to look in 2027. These are the players that the Rams have today, who will still be under contract in 2027, with their 2027 cap number. We are certainly looking at a two year window, do or die with this team.
- Rob Havenstein ($0)
- Alaric Jackson ($24,425,000)
- Poona Ford ($11,083,334)
- Jared Verse ($4,815,474)
- Braden Fiske ($2,994,130)
- Blake Corum ($1,833,924)
- Kamren Kinchens ($1,780,645)
- Brennan Jackson ($1,272,342)
- Tyler Davis ($1,235,638)
- Joshua Karty ($1,224,597)
- Jordan Whittington ($1,224,597)
- Beaux Limmer ($1,224,597)
- K.T. Leveston ($1,210,184)

KeymasterAnd beyond the cap, and the financial side of this, so disappointed it had to end this way for Kupp and the Rams. Set expectations too high after that super crazy year.
RamsMaineiac
KeymasterSo I am trying to reconcile this:
“Kupp is set to earn $20MM in 2025, made up of $12.5MM in base salary and a $7.5MM 90-man roster bonus due on March 17, per OverTheCap. $5MM of that roster bonus became fully guaranteed in 2024.”
https://www.profootballrumors.com/2025/02/rams-willing-to-eat-money-in-kupp-tradeand
“Kupp’s contract calls for him to receive a $7.5 million roster bonus on the 5th day of the league year. $5 million of that roster bonus is guaranteed and is subject to offsets. Kupp would certainly sign a contract that pays more than $5 million in 2025 and the Rams would get their full amount back.”
As I read this, if Kupp signs a contract exceeding $5MM, the Rams get that money back?

KeymasterMy hope is that he overcomes my concerns like OBJ did in his moment in LA.
RamsMaineiac
KeymasterOkay maybe I don’t know enough about this hah. From CBS Sports:
It wouldn’t be surprising if the Rams end up releasing Kupp given the supply of older wide receivers and Kupp’s injury history and production over the last three seasons. The Rams will initially have $22.26 million in 2025 dead money where $7.52 million of 2025 cap room is created by releasing Kupp before the last $2.5 million of his $7.5 million roster bonus becomes a payment obligation on March 16.
Kupp would surely get a contract from another team for more than $5 million. The offset with the roster bonus guarantee means the Rams would get the first $5 million from Kupp’s next contract. The end result would be $17.26 million in dead money where the Rams gain a total for $12.52 million of cap space relating to Kupp’s release.

KeymasterOverthecap.com: https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/los-angeles-rams
Team Cap Space 2025: $32,609,941
Davante Adams: $14MM in 2025 (14MM guaranteed). $30MM in 2026 (6MM guaranteed). If cut next year, pre June 1, Rams will save $18MM. So this could also wind up being the equivalent of a 1year $26MM deal.
Cooper Kupp: Barring a trade partner, cutting Kupp pre 6/1 will provide $7.5MM in cap relief in 2025 and $19.85MM in 2026.
Keeping him in 2025 and cutting him next year, pre 6/1, would cost the Rams the $7.5MM in 2025 but they would still get the same $19.85MM cap savings in 2026. If the Rams had found a trade partner, the financial dynamics would have been different, saving the Rams upward to $20MM.So the question for me is, if they cannot find a trade partner, is Kupp worth $7.5MM in 2025? I certainly would have paid 7.5MM for him before I would have re-signed Atwell for $10MM.

KeymasterDoes “restructure” imply no extension, as in still just for 2025 & 2026?

KeymasterI am strongly considering the choice of not watching the Super Bowl.
To be clear, I am not joining the boycott that was started by more than 300k other fans protesting the sketchy officiating throughout the season which has inexplicably and consistently benefited one of the teams in this Super Bowl (KC). I am also not boycotting because the public persona of other team’s fans is to be “the most horrible human beings we can be, make other people hate us, and not care but revel in it” (Philly). While I will not deny truly wanting both teams to lose, I am thinking about making this choice because the NFL has made a clear gesture, and has kowtowed to the racism that is sweeping our nation in the last few weeks.
NFL Executives decided to remove the “End Racism” slogan from the end zone, specifically now in this game. For context, this slogan has been in the Super Bowl end zone since 2021. It has been there in most games since 2000 and the summer of protests about racial inequality. Choosing to remove that slogan now, during this game, is no coincidence. Our President, the racist bigot in chief, will in attendance at the game. The NFL’s rationalization for why they are making the change now is also full on PR bs, almost as bad as someone blaming plane crashes on DEI.
I am not deluded, and I know my not watching will do nothing, but I am pretty sure I cannot watch and stay true to myself and my values. As my head comes back above the utter shock of watching our Democratic institutions being unlawfully destroyed, I will certainly look for more productive ways to fight back against the shit show that has been the last two weeks, but for now I am thinking this may be the best choice for me.

RamsMaineiac
KeymasterExpanding on this thought a bit… here is the Rams current depth chart with each player’s draft info. Green is a Rams draftee or UDFA in 2022-24. We have done quite well in these last three drafts. On offense, 36% of the starters and 64% of their backups, but on defense, a whopping 73% of our starters and 64% of their backups. On special teams, its everyone—100%.

KeymasterLocker Room Victory Speech
I have watched it a couple times trying to see in Nacua was in the crowd. He strikes me as the type of player who will understand the impact of his actions, will stew a bit on how he “let the team” down, and will likely come out on Monday Night against the Dolphins focused and determined. We shall see.

KeymasterI think maybe good teams show that they can win… even when its ugly. Maybe this is a sign? lol
RamsMaineiac
KeymasterDefense big, particularly the line, but the defensive backfield is 100% an area where we need improvement. They got their ints, but far too many big plays given up, to a suspect Seahawks WR corp, that looked like just poor coverage.
I thought Geno was terrible. Much like our defensive backfield he had his chuck it up moments, but at other moments just made terrible decisions. Glad he is not our QB.
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall, next to Puca, when the Rams won. I am betting a big sigh.
Road win against a division rival always a good thing.

KeymasterRetirements
Just like teams can end contracts, players can also decide to do this, but in their case, it’s called retiring. When a player retires, it’s similar to being cut by the team, and the same rule about June 1 applies here too.For example, if the player we talked about earlier chose to retire instead of being cut, the money would be treated the same way as if the team cut him. If he officially retires on or after June 1, the money is counted as if he was cut on or after June 1.
There are two “buts” for this rule as well, though, just like in many things in the NFL. If a player retires with time left on their contract and then decides to return to the league later, they don’t become a free agent. Contracts usually count based on a player’s seasons, not just the calendar years. So if the player doesn’t play, they don’t add a season to their contract. This means they would still be under the same team’s control if they decide to return unless that team chooses to cut them.
Additionally, when a player retires, the team can ask for part of the signing bonus back, equal to the parts of the contract that the player didn’t play. This money doesn’t count against the salary cap anymore. An arbitrator usually decides on this. It’s known as the “Barry Sanders Rule” because that’s what happened in his case – he had to give back part of his bonus. The difference now is that there are clear rules written in the CBA to handle this kind of situation.
So, do the rams now have the ability to ask for “the signing bonus back, equal to the parts of the contract that the player didn’t play”?
and would they? I would think that is a millions in cap space implication no?RamsMaineiac
KeymasterOkay from here:
Contract Notes
Aaron Donald signed a 3 year, $95 million contract extension with the Rams according to Mike Florio of PFT. Donald received $65 million in guarantees of which $46.5 million is guaranteed at signing. The full guarantee includes Donald’s 2022 base salary, a $5 million 2022 roster bonus, a $15 million 2023 roster bonus and a $25 million signing bonus. If Donald is on the roster on the third day of the 2023 league year his 2023 salary will be fully guaranteed as will a $5 million roster bonus in 2024. If Donald is on the roster on the 5th day of the 2024 league year he will earn a guarantee on his $30 million salary. The contract contains two void years for salary cap purposes.
Donald restructured his contract for salary cap relief in 2024. The Rams converted $13.79 million of salary into a signing bonus. The move saved the Rams $9.2 million in cap room for 2024. That mones is added into the final two void years of the contract.
RamsMaineiac
KeymasterIf he retired with a year left on his contract, why would he have any cap hit this year?
Is the restructure essentially costing the Rams now in the 2024 season, whereas the retire would not have impacted them? I am struggling to understand the why for the Rams if they new both these were going to happen.
RamsMaineiac
KeymasterI have immediate questions about both the impact on Avila, who earned a starting role last year (I hear he may move to C), and the likelihood of Coleman Shelton’s return.
RamsMaineiac
KeymasterAnd while I am noting that he liked many comments on the thread, and a rational person might think it was likely a Rams PR guy on Aaron Donald’s account, I choose to think irrationally at this moment.

KeymasterMaybe they will use their first 1st round pick in years on a kicker next year? Harrison Mevis, Missouri? 👿
RamsMaineiac
Keymaster- They should have never been in this position. Steelers had 17 points off of 2 missed field goals and an INT. Maher needs to go.
- The officiating at the end was awful. I always thought contact was required for pass interference, and that was the first first down I have ever seen made where the team did not move the ball forward.
- This team should have never left St. Louis. I have never been a Los Angelino or St. Louisan, having lived my life mostly in Maine, so I have no dog in the hunt there, but this town is giving this team no home field advantage ever. Every game is an away game. It’s flat out awful.
RamsMaineiac
KeymasterSurprisingly, $65 million might be less than I thought. Puts them in 10th for available cap. The Pats have nearly $123M.
RamsMaineiac
KeymasterI am guessing it was more about removing the distraction in the clubhouse and less about giving the team more cap wiggle room this year or jumping up one round for a 6th rounder.
This puts them about 3.2 million under the cap this season, for that just in case. While I was looking at the cap, I couldn’t help but peak at next season, which features $65 million in available cap space and 35 returning players.
In looking just at our starters, under today’s depth chart, they are only going to only lose one starter, Anchrum (RG), on O (assuming Kupp returns and replaces Jefferson as a starter) and four on D with starters Jonah Williams (LDE), Christian Rozeboom (RILB), Michael Hoecht (SLB), and Jordan Fuller (SS).
Nobody there that is not replaceable with $65 million in the bank. They should be pretty active in free agency next season filling in the gaps. Should be fun.

KeymasterIts actually click bait. its actually brings you to a video titled, “Isaac Bruce Crushes San Fran in Key Matchup! (49ers vs. Rams 1999, Week 5)”.
15 minute synopsis of all the key plays in that game (which broke the 17 game losing streak with the 49ers). Bruce had 5 receptions for 134 yards and 4TDs.
