Some head scratchers for sure cut Jordan with Countess and Hill looking awful to me and Forest was making plays all over the place but I think Wade knows what he’s doing
I’m not sure why Troy Hill gets all the love. He seems a bit shaky to me at the spot. But they see more than we do. Also–not sure how his special teams skills are. That can be a factor.

PA RamParticipantI must say that Johnny Mundt is a surprise to me. Until he scored the touchdown on Thursday I didn’t even know he existed.

September 2, 2017 at 4:55 pm in reply to: informal poll: at this point, how confident are you in Goff? #73628PA RamParticipantI’m all “wait and see” here. I just don’t have a feel one way or the other. I do know if he fails with this coaching staff and receivers and upgraded line, it’s not good. We shall see.

PA RamParticipantI have to say that I was disappointed that Sam Rogers could not have had more of an impact. I’m wondering if he will make the practice squad. Shippen will probably find a job somewhere–he’s too good. Spruce just can’t stay healthy. He has all the talent in the world and can play in this league. He just has to get healthy. Forrest was a surprise. Not sure what happened there. I guess they just like the other guys better.
Now they’ll check the cuts of other teams before finalizing everything, I’m sure. I’d guess they’re really watching the linemen pretty close.

PA RamParticipantSo…..what was the plan to get through the wall if the Night King hadn’t conveniently just captured a dragon?
Night King: “Okay boys we will get on each others shoulders…thus creating a ladder…Three Stooges style, and one by one we will climb up and over until enough guys can capture the wall and open it for the others. Unless, of course someone is stupid enough to give us a dragon. Then, we will obviously use its blue fire to melt the damn thing. But don’t hold your breath on that one guys. Just get ready to climb.”
And one other thing: Cerci has a strategy to just let the others fight the Night King and army of the dead and hope they win but are left devastated? If they don’t win what is her plan? To battle them herself? And use the elephants?
It all looks very cool. I enjoy it. But the show feels more like a SYFY channel production these days.
Now we wait two years.

PA RamParticipantDisappointment. But not bitter disappointment.
Forget the defense. That was second teamers and I don’t really count that last night. Although I am a bit worried about how this will all suddenly come together on week 1 when they haven’t been really playing together. But we’ll see.
Special teams. My main gripe here was some poor decisions on bringing the ball out of the endzone. The ball is spotted at the 25 yard line now. In most cases it’s just better to take that–unless you see a huge opportunity.
Offense.
I went to GamePass and slowed things down. First of all–Brown was not great at RG. He was inconsistent at best. He worries me a bit there. On the sack/fumble Brown is literally blocking NO ONE. Yes–Havenstein got beat but Brown is staring into empty space. He had other poor results earlier in the drive. Not impressed. By the way–Whitworth chased that defender who had the ball all the way to the endzomne. Great effort–even if he had no shot. Also–I originally thought Goff did not feel the pressure at all but he is sliding a bit to his left as Bosa approaches and he was just a second slow on throwing it. One note: on the play before when he overthrew Higbee in the endzone he could have had a wide open Robert Woods who was cutting across the middle toward the goal line. Goff never saw him.
On the second series after the fumble The Rams start out fine. A quick pass to Cooper for about 6 yards and Brown up the middle for the first down. After that Goff fakes the handoff and the pressure comes from the left side as #93 for the Chargers spins away from Saffold and has a clean line to Goff. Still, Goff has plenty of time to set and throw. It’s just a bad throw. Period. Two Rams receivers were in the area Woods was deep and Watkins(was wide open) shorter. I’m not sure who he was trying to hit because it ended up between them. Either way. Just a bad throw.
On the next drive–the Malcolm Brown drive–other than Havenstein–it was a second unit offensive line. For the record it was Williams, Havenstein, Blythe, Eldenkamp and Wichmann. Chargers were still playing starters. I have to give a high five to Watkins. Sammy is a really good downfield blocker as a receiver. A lot of receivers don’t do that but he blocking alone is an asset.
On the drive Goff throws high to a wide open Higbee, He had time. Bad throw. On a 3rd and 9 Goff hits Wood short of the sticks and takes a good hit to the turf in the process. Goff is done for the night. He finishes 5-8 for 56 yards and an int.
I wish that McVay would have sent Goff back with the first unit on the Malcolm Brown drive and let him throw. Sending him out there to hand off was a waste, IMO. Yeah–it’s great work for the run game but Mannion could have handed the ball to Brown.
It looked to me like Goff threw about 3 bad balls. The high endzone pass to Higbee(not sure if the threw it away or not but he had Woods open)the interception, and a high pass to Higbee on the last drive. Those were his three incompletions. Like I said–I would have liked to see one more drive where he got to throw the ball. I’m not sure if he’s ready for the season. I just don’t know.
Clearly McVay didn’t care about the game itself–and that’s fine–it’s pre-season. So hopefully he was able to see what he wanted to see. The Chargers certainly played more starters and longer. I do think that teams will believe that if you hit Goff you can rattle him and so I expect he will see a lot of exotic blitzes this year–until he burns teams on them. Or he shows the hits don’t matter.
That’s all I got for now.
I do think that Fouts is on to something about the Rams quarterbacks needing to get a better feel for the pressure(although I believe Mannion is better than Goff at that right now). That should come with time.

Weird place.

PA RamParticipantMannion may have value but right now I’d say he’s more valuable as a back-up then he is as a future fifth round pick. Kaepernik is sitting out there. If a team is desperate they will sign him.
I think Mannion can be a solid back-up and potential starter. For a big guy he moves fantastic in the pocket. There’s a lot to like about him. I would not trade him this year. Perhaps in a year or two if he establishes a good value and we’re sold on Goff, But not now.

PA RamParticipantI love Kupp. But this is really unfair to set such lofty expectations after two pre-season games. NFL Network was raving about him as a rising fantasy star. I wish he’d just be allowed to fly under the radar for awhile and just find his game and place on the team without a harsh spotlight.

PA RamParticipantOne of my current (bingeing) favorites is Person of Interest. It’s a Sci-Fi story set in New York that doesn’t make its Sci-Fi aspects hard to imagine as actually existing now. The foundational premise is mass surveillance via an AI “machine.” But it gets ahead of its skis at times when it sets up confrontations between enemies and heroes. When it has impossible numbers of enemies, armed to the teeth, facing off against the very small band of regulars.
You know I have been wanting to watch that series for awhile but just haven’t done it yet. I know that Johnathan Nolan was a creator and I’m a fan of his(as my quote tag reveals)and so one of these days I have to do it. I want to see if it’s on Netflix because I’d like to start at the beginning.

PA RamParticipantOn if he is going to watch the solar eclipse tomorrow)
“It’s funny because I don’t really know anything about anything other than football. Somebody was telling about that. Actually, Shane was telling me because he’s from the area that it’s going to take place.
(On if he knows anything about the eclipse)
“No, I don’t, but I can tell you about a defense. No, I’m just kidding (laughs). So, I think I might have to take a look and see what’s going on with that, but I just recently heard about that last night on the plane, which is embarrassing but true.”
So……Goff knows nothing about where the sun rises and sets. McVay knows nothing about the solar eclipse.
It’s a good thing their chosen field was not astronomy.
Still–I bet Neil Degrasse Tyson knows nothing about attacking a 3-4 defense. So there’s that.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantI think this was a very silly episode.
I never liked the whole, “let’s go grab a dead guy and bring it back for proof” scheme and now we know that this may have mostly been about giving the Night King a dragon of his own. I mean–I’m not sure the dead guy convinces Cersi or that she even cares and if it doesn’t…it was all sort of pointless. Beyond two things—bringing a dragon to the Night King and hooking up Jon and Dany.
But there had to be a better way.
There they are–stuck on a rock while this weird timeline(is it an hour, a day, a week.)
I’m sorry–it was just silly.
Also annoying–the Sansa, Arya spat. Sansa is so easily manipulated, it seems. And where was Bran during all of this goings on? He only reveals things when he feels like it? He knows all about Littlefinger and his schemes.
Still—an ice dragon is REALLY cool. So I’m glad they did it.
But this hurried, rushed season has some flaws and doesn’t measure up to previous seasons.
I thought the Night King and his gang would break through the wall this season but now I think it’ll be next year.
Next week is the big pow wow. I’m expecting a Lannister deception of some sort because–it’s the Lannisters.

PA RamParticipantFirst of all I want to introduce myself as the President of the Cooper Kupp fan club.
Receivers are suddenly a strength of this team and it feels good.
I’m in a good mood about the game and the feel of this team right now. It’s pointed in a good direction.
Some quick thoughts:
I can’t wait until the entire defense is healthy and everyone is in there(Donald) to see what they can do. I’m a bit concerned about Quinn. Hopefully he plays this week.
I wonder if McVay’s reasoning of putting Goff out behind the second string line was to speed the game up for him a bit–to make him a little less comfortable in the pocket to see how he responds. In any case–the line, both strings, gave him pretty good protection.
Nice to see Gurley running with some power and authority. I think he likes this offense.
The refs were a little flag happy.
Still waiting to see the “bowling ball of butcher knives” do something. So far Rogers has been invisible. Did he even play last night?
Big game this week as the so-called “dress rehearsal” game” and then the 4th(sit everyone) game. When is the first big cut down?
Anyway–great time in the chat room enjoying the game with my fellow Rams maniacs. Hopefully we can enjoy a lot more this season.

PA RamParticipantI will have the game live but I will probably be checking in a little late due to picking my wife up at work. Tell them not to start til 10:15 or 10:20. Thanks.

PA RamParticipantWhat is it with Quinn? The back issue?
If that’s going to be a steady problem I’m not sure how much longer he can play.

PA RamParticipantI thought he played a very solid game. I was glad to see that.

PA RamParticipantAfter watching how bad Kellen Moore sucks for the Cowboys against the Colts and how great Dak moved the team on the Colts, I’m also interested in how the defense performs.
Moore has a very slow release, not great accuracy and just isn’t very good. Dak moved the Cowboys with ease on the Colts defense. When Moore came in the Cowboys looked like a different team. They looked like the team the Rams faced.
So was the Rams defense that good? Or were the Cowboys that bad with Moore?
Stay tuned.
In other news Christian Mcaffery looked fantastic for the Panthers. What a great weapon he’s gonna be for them.
Please don’t let Gurley have been a one year fluke.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantI don’t know what to make of Gurley but we’ll find out soon enough. It’s definitely a concern. And a mystery.
Goff needs to show something. Awareness. Good decision making. Good throws. If he looks rattled, uncertain, off on throws, I’ll be concerned.
But those are the big two to watch.
Obviously I hope the line plays well.

PA RamParticipantI broke down and got Game Pass this year. Sammy Watkins sold me. I hope I don’t regret it.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantNope. If being the highest paid defensive player isn’t good enough then there’s nothing to talk about. Sit out and start missing paychecks. See how that works out. The team isn’t going to the Superbowl anyway. Time to play hardball. The Rams would be stupid to give him that opt out.
If he wants more, play this year and sign a future contract worth more. He’s valuable, of course. But every valuable player will want this. They won’t be able to manage a cap with any kind of certainty.

PA RamParticipantTrue story: I watched this last night on a cell phone surrounded by my wife and son. All three of us are fans of the show but we were at a Guns N’ Roses concert last night and stayed at a hotel that didn’t have HBO. So after the concert she streamed it on her phone and we jammed in around it to watch. Now THAT’S being obsessed with a show. We re-watched the bigger version at home today on our television.
Not the most memorable show but Sam and Gilly were funny.
Can’t wait til next week.
The chemistry of the actors on this show is amazing. It is so well cast.
By the way–over the weekend I ran into THREE Rams fans. I always tell my wife we’re out there and this weekend I ran into them. On Saturday I ran into an old friend I used to work with and he’s a big Rams fan. On Sunday morning it was a clerk at WAWA who saw I was wearing a Rams shirt and he excitedly proclaimed to be one of me. We talked about the game.
Sunday night at the concert another guy wearing a Rams shirt started screaming “Yeah, Rams!!!” at me.
See–we really are out there. Just gotta know where to look.

PA RamParticipantThe gold just disrupts the smooth feel of the uniform. It’s flashy. It’s weird. It has to go. Also, the White horns should be thicker.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantI would try to find a place on the PS for him and see if he can improve ball security and blocking. If he can’t do that, his running skills won’t matter. And he IS a very exciting runner.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipant1, McVay’s offense just has a better look to it–period. He seems to give the QB good options and the ball was hitting guys who either had a chance to turn and run–or were running in stride.
2.) The dropsies and fumbles sucked but I do like the skill players better this year and they haven’t even added Watkins to the mix yet.
3.) The offensive line did not suck. Yes–the bad snap sucked and Jamon Brown did not play well, but overall it did not suck.
4.) The defense was very solid. I feel so much better about the switch in that unit now. Nice job, Wade.
5.) Everett and Kupp had nice games. Higbee needs to be more sure handed, as well as Hemmingway.
6.) Mannion did an exceptional job. He can even get better when given the chance. He just hasn’t had a chance.
7.)Goff did not play enough. New system. New receivers. I get that they don’t want him hurt but that can happen in week 1. He can also get hurt if he is not prepared. Goff AND Gurley need more game reps.
8.) Justin Davis. Wow. He can’t block for shit but that kid can run. I can’t believe there isn’t some place for him on this team. He looks explosive. He looks—dare I say it–like our best “running” back right now. But yes–he must hold onto the football.
9.)I don’t remember if McVay took any time outs in the game. Did they take ANY?
10.)McVay did not look happy at the end of the game. This is a serious dude. The win meant nothing to him at all. You can bet he will be focused on the mistakes.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantPA…Goff came out of Cal much further behind than most drafted qbs.
To this day, not one single qb who has come out of the college Air Raid offense has ever become a consistent starter. This goes back to Couch. The closest have been Foles and Keenum. Though Foles did well in a pro spread under Kelly, with the Rams he had to play a pro system, and as we know, crashed.
The offense Trubisky was in in college was not as far from pro systems as the Cal offense was.
Well, I sure hope Goff becomes the guy who makes the transition because if he can do it–this young offense is set to do great things. If not, they’d better not waste time on him. They need to know for sure after this year if he can be the guy or not.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantGoff.
He doesn’t have to look like Tom Brady. But he has to look decent. I watched some of the Bears game. Trubisky looked fantastic. Looked like he was playing the game forever. I get it. Pre-season. Vanilla defense and all of that. But his poise, his accuracy, his decision making were first rate. And this was his first game.
But I won’t look for perfection. Just show me something, not a complete meltdown or disaster.
So to me, Goff is very important. He will touch the ball on every single play. He HAS to be at least good.
That’s what I’m looking for.
After that–protection. Is the line looking competent? And pleeeeeease no injuries.
Don’t know if I’ll make the chat room tonight. The wife’s home and I’ll probably be away from the computer watching the game upstairs. But I’ll comment on the board from my tablet probably.
Anyway, GO RAMS!!!
