Make People Think AGAIN? Did they ever think-critically?

Well, no, Americans probably have never thought critically. But that’s not entirely their fault. They aren’t taught to think that way. They are taught to accept statements from people in authority as the truth. That was just meant as a playful spin-off of the Trump slogan anyway.

I mean, its not just Science. Americans dont know shit about Colonialism, Corporotocracy, Propaganda, CIA, NSA, Capitalism, HISTORY, etc, etc

I agree that not enough attention is being paid to that stuff. Educators and journalists need to stop being complicit in keeping us ignorant of those topics. But how can that happen when the institutions that control what we know and how we think have a stake in keeping us ignorant?

On a separate issue, do professors really teach that “science is just another narrative” that might be right or wrong?

I don’t know. I haven’t seen that from science professors obviously but I can’t speak to what philosophy and humanities professors might be saying. Of course, at places like Liberty College it’s probably carved into the marble above the entrance of the ‘science’ building.

we are seeing a completely different defensive scheme from the good guys this year than what we’ve seen in the last few years.

GW loves to pressure the QB and is known for inventive ways to bring extra rushers.

This year the Rams have been primarily a cover 2 and 4 rushers team…even from game 1 when everybody, with the exception of EJ, was healthy.

I think they started they year this way because EJ was out and Sens was starting and the safeties were a question mark….so they tried to give the DB’s a little room to not get beat over the top. Now that Tru is down, Sens has been canned…insert Hill…., and the safeties are playing better than hoped. But they are still trying to protect the DB’s playing bend but don’t break.

Excellent point. Last year with JJenks and TruJo at corner, they could do more things defensively. This year they have had to play more vanilla to protect their newbies in the secondary.

I would expect next men up, be coached up, and prepared to play well.

So you think there are teams 2 deep when it comes to a top pass-rushing right defensive end?

Name the teams you;ve known through all NFL history that were 2 deep that way. That is they could afford to lose a top pass rushing end because they didn’t lose anything with the next guy up. How many teams have ever been that deep at end? (And that’s not to mention the fact that it’s both a top corner and a top end.)

Because see the issue is, not replacing A player. It’s replacing one of the top players in the league.

Is a team better off with one of the top defensive ends in the league? Cause if not I don’t know why they extended him. Turns out according to you, you can get just as good production for cheaper from your bench.

I keep asking these tough but obvious questions and you keep repeating coaching cliches.

If the Head Coaches strength is defense, like Jeff Fisher is supposed to be, I would expect it to do well, even with 11 new starters. If he struggles with that, then that is a problem.

Jack, so you think a team’s performance falls all on the coach even when his best players are injured? The coach should be able to plug any player in and get good results? In other words the player doesn’t matter – only the coach matters.

If that’s the case then why does the NFL pay millions of dollars on scouting departments? Why do they spend millions flying scouts to college games to evaluate players and why do they fly entire coaching staffs to a dozen or more college combines and pro days every year? If what you say is true then why doesn’t every team in the league simply stock their teams with cheap scrubs?

Because the players do matter, right? And the better they are the more they matter and the harder they are to replace. That’s why coaches can’t be expected to do as well when too many key pieces of their roster are hurt. The players matter.

He can’t swat defenders out of the way like Godzilla does fighter jets.

Then what did they draft him for?

    Bust.

    zack, look at me.

I’m going to be blunt. If this hurts, I’m sorry but I don’t know any other way to say this.

    Gurley isn’t Massey.

And as much as we would like to think he is…as much as we like to hope he is…Massey’s not coming back.

    You’re treadin’ water here, man.

It’s time to move on, zack.

Help me help you to move on.

Massey is gone, zack! He’s gone!

Yes, I know that makes life unbearable but it’s the truth.

But now it’s time to soldier on – like Massey would, zack.

That’s it. Just think about what Massey would do.

I actually liked a lot of what he said especially when he said the problems in the Middle East are largely the result of western intervention and that we should ‘own’ that.

He did lose me at the end when he said the election is fixed. That’s tinfoil hat stuff. But of course he’s right that the system is rigged in favor of the two major parties.

    ————-
I liked what he said about the mid east too, until he got to the part where he said the US was trying to “build democracies” in a region that didnt have a clue about how to have democracy.

I would have liked to explain to him that the US version of “creating democracy” means, they tell the CIA to pour millions of dollars into a region, and conduct every kind of murderous tricks imaginable so that the “approved” leader gets “elected”. Such as Chalabi in Iraq.
And heck they only go with the “democracy” plan when they prettymuch ‘have’ to. Blah blah blah.

Jesse still thinks the mighty-Empire “means well” i guess. Naive.

    w
    v

Well, I agree with you. His take on the Mid East is overly simplistic and he was wrong about the Kurds, Sunnis and Shites always being at war and he was wrong that the region has always been a mess. Dysfunctional civilizations wouldn’t last for thousands of years. Someone has to fuck them up.

I was at least impressed that he understood the root of the current problem though…Western intervention.

It would have taken a Masseyian effort for Gurley to get into the endzone on that play.

But Gurley, as great as he is, is only mortal. He can’t swat defenders out of the way like Godzilla does fighter jets. He needs at least some help from the o-line.

Typical scriptural fundamentalist. You take a text from the Apocrypha, and twist its meaning.

Jesus did NOT say the kingdom is inside the tackles, or outside the tackles.

He said inside of you, or outside of you.

Plainly, he meant that the Touchdown is both Inside you, and Outside you. It’s a state of mind AND a place.

He never said anything about how to reach the end zone kingdom. Well, he did. But not in Thomas.

    —————-
You are saying Jesus never said anything about how to reach the end zone ?

Then why does Fisher even pray to him?

Gurley seemingly had a hole to his left, with Cory Harkey blocking his man while acting as a fullback and right guard Jamon Brown acting as a pulling guard to create a hole on the left side. But Gurley ran straight ahead, and the penetration came quickly.

I mentioned during the chat that I thought it was odd for Gurley to try to run off right guard when the right guard pulled to the left. As it turns out, Gurley just ran the wrong way.

That happened several times during the game. Mr. Gurley needs to study his playbook. Kudos to Keenum for not fumbling any of those hand-offs.

They still had a shot to win with the ball and 6 minutes to play and fizzled out. I thought that should have been Gurley time. 14 rushes for TG is not the Rams game. I said in an earlier post they couldn’t get in to a shoot out with Detroit…that’s playing their game.

Yeah I’m surprised they didn’t run Gurley more since he was having success. I can understand riding Keenum’s hot hand but the defense was struggling. They could slow the game down and keep Detroit’s offense off the field if they had gotten Gurley more involved.

Anyway, it’s good to have you here, sanbagger. Stick around and post often.

Yeah but it’s no big deal. The Rams just lost two games they expected to win. It only makes sense that the head coach was going to have something to say to his team using language that he might not want the public to hear.

The so-called depth the Rams supposedly have along the d-line is overrated. Donald was being double-teamed the entire game and the other defenders couldn’t even sniff the QB. I think the Rams should invest another early pick in a pass rusher. Quinn and Brochers miss too much time with injuries.

    Me too.

But I don’t think Fisher believes they should be losing games like this to teams like the Lions anymore.

I bet the talk he had with his players without the media present touched on that belief. 😉

    It’s a tupsy-turvey season.

They were supposed to be a running team with Gurley, win with defense, and Keenum was just supposed to be a decent game manager…they didn’t have the receivers anyway.

Well the receivers are the best they’ve been since…jeez how long? 2006? Including Tavon, but especially Quick and Britt.

Keenum keeps them in games yes with smart game management but also a very good long game.

Gurley can’t get going (though he’s the best receiving RB outside of Faulk…since, forever)

And without Quinn and Johnson, the D can’t keep them in games.

As far as the D goes…they really aren’t blitzing much at all. I know GW likes to pressure the QB so I’m wondering if they have concerns with the DB’s and this has been going on all year including when Tru was out there.

Before the season if you told me the Rams offense would put up 28 points in a game I’d chalk that up as a win.

I know stuff like this depends on the “flow of the game”, but how did Gurley only end up with 15 carries? He should have gotten the ball a lot more. However, I don’t have a problem with the offense.

The defense though is really struggling. Last week they couldn’t stop the run and this week it was the pass. No one other than Donald can generate a pass rush but he’s being doubled every down. Looks like Brockers came back too early but he’s too fragile anyway. Without Quinn and TruJo this defense has no teeth.

    The defense came up small.

The NFL is now a week to week league. In any game it’s hard to predict the winner (unless the Pats are playing) but the Rams have now lost to two so-so teams in a row.

This isn’t a playoff team. Maybe they’ll get better but right now this is a mediocre team.

Quinn’s the key. Without Quinn a great pass rush is just ok.

Now a secondary minus TruJo has to cover longer…

The offense has to pick it up today to take some pressure off the defense.

Most americans, myself included, are in favor of gays having the same benefits as conferred through marriage. But calling it marriage is wrong. Marriage is only between a man and a woman.

Most Americans have no problem calling the formal union between two homosexuals ‘marriage’. Why do you? What is it about the term marriage as applied to homosexuals that’s offensive?

Most americans don’t even think about it. For most people of faith it is offensive to use the term marriage in that context.

Well, I would disagree that most people of faith are offended by it. Regardless, marriage predates Christianity so the word doesn’t belong to Christians. And as Billy points out the concept of marriage has meant different things to different cultures throughout time. What Christians consider marriage today is different than marriage in the Bible. And the meaning of marriage will likely remain fluid as it always has been.

Martz inherited a historically bad defense . Vermeil has said one of the reasons he retired was he didn’t want to cut those players so that problem fell to Martz who responded with rebuilding the worst defense in the NFL into a top 5 Defense in one freaking season!

I see that differently. Martz inherited the number 7 defense from Vermeil and he helped make it historically bad. After the Superbowl victory, Vermeil said the defense had to get tougher because he watched them wilt away in the 4th quarter against Tennessee. Their lack of conditioning almost cost them the game. When Martz became head coach he was asked about Vermeil’s comment about the defense and he openly disagreed with it. His practices were about tempo and efficiency…not about building toughness or conditioning. And that translated to the field. Also, Martz was convinced that the two-headed DC system with Guinta and Bunting that worked effectively under Vermeil was no good after the Lions game because a miscommunication led to an improper defensive call that allowed Detroit to complete that long pass to win the game. Martz said one man should be accountable. So when Martz became HC he got rid of Bunting and kept Giunta who as it turns out was in way over his head when given complete control. They had to bring in a dying Bud Carson who had been Giunta’s mentor to try and fix his mess. One of the things Carson would complain about is that the defense lacked toughness.

Now, Martz does get credit for rebuilding the defense in 2001, but he helped destroy it after Vermeil retired. That mess in 2000 was all on him.

It’s scary that scientists are being harassed and threatened by powerful individuals/groups who might not like what they find. They want propaganda and politics to shape public opinion instead of data and hard evidence. The program mentioned fetal tissue and climate science but it is also happening to researchers investigating gun violence.

Anyway, there is something seriously wrong with a system that allows someone like Lamar Smith to chair the House Science Committee. That’s like putting Joseph Goebbels in charge of a Jewish charity.

I won’t be sold until the Rams no longer field the worst offense in the league (and yes, I’m aware they aren’t statistically the worst if you eliminate the 9’ers game).

Fix the running game…then I’ll start to believe.

I would say the blocking schemes and responsibilities sit squarely on Boras and Boo.

Right now, the Rams O-line is just flat getting beat. I thought it was stacked lines, but apparently that’s not the case. The defenders are still close in but the line really isn’t helping TG out

Yeah, the Rams o-line is not getting it done in the running game going back 13 games. It’s frustrating because the talent level (at least on paper) seems to be much better than the performances we’re seeing.

The Lions have been bad for so long that most of their fans are at the final acceptance stage of grief and loss. They are at that point where they have accepted the losing and can now even find humor in it. The hope is gone but that’s ok – they have made peace with it.

    Good for them.

However, there are a few that are still in the denial stage – desperate fans clinging to the idea that the season can still be saved and that they have a chance against the Rams.

Poor, pathetic, delusional souls. It’s sad, really. I hope they can come to terms with the beating the Rams are about to lay upon the Lions as most of their brethren have. Hopefully this loss will hasten their journey towards final acceptance.

Then the pain will be replaced with sweet, soothing numbness.
