nittany ramModeratorBring on someone pushing for corporate accountability, and you’ll hear one of their reporters take the side of Big Business against them.
Yeah, I was listening to Tom Ashbrook’s show a few years ago when he was interviewing a couple oil company executives. I thought finally someone was going to hold their feet to the fire about climate change, opening up federally protected lands for drilling, etc. Instead he asked innocuous questions and basically kissed their asses for an hour. He even dressed down a caller who tried to ask a tough question. I’ve hated him ever since.
I probably caught that same show. :>)
Looking back, I must have been terribly naive as a teenager in college (1970s), cuz I really, really couldn’t even conceive of that kind of journalism. It strikes me as so obviously wrong and against everything I thought was at the root of the journalistic mission. Fight the power. Speak truth to power. Power to the people, right on! All of those sayings were very real for me. I was openly against the Vietnam War, protested it in high school, protested against a crack down by administrators in response to our protests — we walked out of class en masse, etc. etc. And while I’ve always seen my generation as being just a little bit too late for the fireworks of the 1960s, I still look back with fondness at our ability, relatively speaking, to see through “the man.”
Until OWS, I thought that was largely absent and we had become far too acquiescent as a culture, and far too compliant. I hope millennials and the generation after them bring back that spirit and then some.
Well, in the end the corporate media will always be beholden to its corporate masters. Can media outlets whose primary concern is profit and marketshare ever be trusted to deliver accurate and unbiased information? There is no fix for this as long as the media operates under the current system.

nittany ramModeratorThst was a great article.
The media doesn’t print the truth (which we’ve known for a long time) and even if they did, they’ve reached a point where nobody believes them anyway because they’ve lost all credibility with the public. So politicians/the govt has little to fear from the media so they can basically operate unchecked. It’s why Clinton and Trump can vie for the presidency in spite of their histories.
And now we have a megalomaniac in power who threatens to ban any members of the press who print anything negative about him and the public cheers him for it.
I don’t know how this can be fixed.
nittany ramModeratorArthur ‘Pappy’ Lewis?
Wasn’t he the original drummer for Spinal Tap?
nittany ramModeratorThey only named him because Hekker demanded it.
I can never take the Pro Bowl seriously since it never recognized Chris Massey.
By rights it should be called the Chris Massey Bowl.
nittany ramModeratorIf Jared Goff takes a big step forward and Gurley returns to form, that alone could get them to .500, (assuming the defense remains tough).
nittany ramModeratorThanks everyone for validating what I was seeing.

nittany ramModeratorSpruce couldn’t stay healthy enough to dress for a single game. His entire rep is based on part of one preseason game.
Well…that and his college accolades.
I get what you’re sayin, but this guy has a pedigree and showed hands when he was healthy. I have hopes for this guy.
I have hope for him too. But he hasn’t established himself yet so we don’t know for sure. Same for Cooper and Thomas. Hopefully McVay can fast-track these guys’ development.
January 17, 2017 at 5:24 pm in reply to: LA Rams To Let CB Trumaine Johnson, WR Kenny Britt Leave In FA, Sign WR DeSean J #63779
nittany ramModeratori would let britt go. unless mcvay thinks he can do something with him.
sign a guy like garcon, who knows the system, and you got garcon, austin, cooper, thomas, and spruce.
i think that’s enough to work with at receiver.
They definitely need to sign a good FA WR, preferably someone who has worked under McVay. But I’m not sure they should just let Britt go without attempting to sign him. I saw nothing from Cooper and Thomas during the regular season that made me think they can play in this league and Spruce couldn’t stay healthy enough to dress for a single game. His entire rep is based on part of one preseason game.

nittany ramModeratorRanked-choice voting just makes so much sense. It should be implemented nationally at every level of government.
I agree, and I think that spreading state-by-state, the way that gay marriage and pot spread, is the best way to get it on a national level. Washington isn’t going to change the law and expand voters’ choices unless they are forced to, and they won’t be forced to until Americans realize ranked voting is a better system.
Why does progress have to be so bloody slow?
Well, it will upset the status quo so Washington will probably be against it and spread some BS propaganda about it like they do for the electoral college and how it makes sure the entire country is represented equally…blah, blah, blech

nittany ramModeratorDidnt look fifteen feet long to me. Hard to see the scale in that vid.
I think Pa ram should stand next to it so we can get some scale.
w
vIt didn’t look that big to me either. Maybe 12 feet long or so. But you’re right, we need PA Ram to stand beside it for scale. Perhaps he could wrap his arms around its midsection so we could get an indication of its girth as well.
On a side note, I was told by a ranger in the Everglades that the gators in Florida are typically smaller than they are anywhere else in their range (Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc). Nobody knows why…

January 17, 2017 at 3:06 pm in reply to: LA Rams Film Room: What To Expect From New HC Sean McVay On Offense #63758
nittany ramModeratorWashington’s offense last year was about as close to a true “spread” offense as an NFL can get. Considering Goff played in Cal’s “Bear Raid” system for three years in college, McVay’s spread-out attack should give Goff the conditions he needs to succeed.
McVay likes to stretch the field vertically.
Interesting. McVay isn’t your typical WCO guy. Typically, the WCO is a horizontal passing game featuring short passes where receivers run outs and crossing patterns and rely on ‘picks’ to get separation.
McVay doesn’t take that approach. He likes to stretch the field.
Cool.

nittany ramModeratorI don’t know why the Rams would let TruJo go without a serious attempt at re-signing him. Big, physical corners who can cover aren’t easy to find. He had a down year but so did the entire team. I chalk that up to the move and injuries as he was banged up quite a bit.
nittany ramModeratorNah, I’m onboard the Coach Zygote train…
Next stop, Super Bowl.

nittany ramModeratorNewton’s not elite. Never was.
nittany ramModeratorif this was true i would have to think it was someone involved in the hiring process of mcvay. i mean who would get on board after they had hired the new coach?
i’d be intrigued if it was marshall faulk…
Yep, Marshall Faulk. That was my first thought.
nittany ramModeratorGreen Bay sure has quieted down the fans in big D.
If GB wins and plays ATL next week, I’m takin the over. The score should remind us of a basketball game.
It’s amazing what Rodgers and that Packers offense can do.
But it’s also depressing when you consider how far away the Rams are from that.
Light years.
I was thinking the same thing watching Atlanta yesterday.
nittany ramModeratorI think Shanahan just won the 49ers job.
You’re probably right, but I really don’t want him in San Francisco.
I wonder if he’ll have a grudge against the Rams for not even interviewing him before they hired Coach Zygote?
Oh well, that’s the sorta thing that keeps rivalries spicy I guess.
my fear is that the rams let the right one go. again. and the niners will dominate the nfc west for years to come.
unless i believe that demoff made the right decision…
i guess it’s possible.
Well, hiring a coach is never a sure thing especially when he’s a first time head coach. Sometimes even guys that have been successful head coaches with other teams fail in their new locale. There’s just so many things outside of their control that have to break just right for a team to be successful.
What gives me hope is that everything said about McVay has been positive. Everyone that knows him thinks he will be a good head coach. Other coaches, players, media people, etc all think he’s going to succeed.

nittany ramModeratorSeattle leading Atlanta early, i see. Are we for or against Seattle?
w
vRams fans are ALWAYS against Seattle.
I can see why YOU might be confused, though.
January 14, 2017 at 3:46 pm in reply to: Rams winning the battle for hearts and minds with the Chargers #63569
nittany ramModerator…i suppose it could be worse. It could be the Cowboys or Vikings or Patriots sharing the stadium. Imagine THAT. The Chargers are not a malevolent force of evil as far as i can tell. I suppose we can get used to them. Ya know.
w
vKroenke is there. Spanos is now there. It’s only a matter of time until Jerry Jones is there. I have a theory that the Hellmouth in nearby Sunnyvale is beckoning for its children to return – probably as a prelude to a Revelations-style apocalypse in which all the beasts of Hell are released on the surface of the earth.
Fortunately, we’re not alone…
January 14, 2017 at 3:00 pm in reply to: Rams winning the battle for hearts and minds with the Chargers #63564
nittany ramModeratorWell thats one reason why i hate this whole La Charger thing. There shouldnt even BE a battle for hearts and minds.
The Chargers should have the hearts and minds in San Diego
and the Rams should have the hearts and minds in LA.Thats how God intended it.
w
vI agree. The Chargers being in LA is just…so…wrong.
nittany ramModeratorNorv Turner is still lookin for work. Not sure his type of O would mesh with McVays, but I’m confident they could put their heads together and work a system out.
I also like that Norv is focused on balance in the O while I think McVay may be more of a pass oriented type of O guy. This team is gonna need Gurley as they transition to the new O and beyond IMO.
i agree with you about bringing in someone who is more balanced. i just don’t know that turner is that guy.
first i think that he is a coryell guy while mcvay is more of a west coast offense.
second i would think turner would want playcalling duties so unless he’s willing to give that up, it doesn’t look like a match.
i’m thinking a guy like callahan would work. don’t know that washington would be willing to give him up.
Not wanting to give up play calling duties is why Turner left Minn. That, and as you say, him being a Coryell guy, makes me think he wouldn’t be a good fit. I do love him as an OC though.
nittany ramModeratorI’m interested in who the OC will be. Bill Callahan?
January 13, 2017 at 10:20 am in reply to: speculation conversation…what if they switched to a 3/4 #63421
nittany ramModeratorI think Donald is much more valuable on the D-line. I would be leary of moving perhaps the best DT of his generation to another position.
January 13, 2017 at 6:47 am in reply to: speculation conversation…what if they switched to a 3/4 #63385
nittany ramModeratorSee the post previous to this one.
On how to use Donald. in the 3-4 defense these days the DC can play one of the DEs down a 3-tech. In the Phillips playbooks it’s called “Sink” and they can have AD move to either side.
Just thinking out loud. The idea there is that rather than play both 3/4 DEs over the tackle (as DEs do in most 3/4s), one plays in the 3-tech gap between guard and tackle. The idea is that that suits Donald better.
According to the pic in the last post the front 7 would be:
LDE: Westbrooks, Hayes
NT: Brockers
3-tech: DonaldLOLB: ?
LILB: ? (in the pic it’s Barron but I can’t see that) (Forrest?)
RILB: Ogletree
ROLB: QuinnDonald, Quinn, and Tree on the defensive right side would be a lot of fun and a nightmare for opposing offenses.
According to the way I have interpreted this, Barron seems to be odd man out. Too small to play LB in a 3/4? But then I ain’t Phillips and maybe he has ideas.
If though I am right about Barron, they would then need 2 LBs. Could one of these guys can become a linebacker in this system? —> Forrest, Longacre, Fox, Sims.
And you know…that IS possible, that one of those guys could convert.
…
I have no idea how Phillips uses his safeties, so it’s not clear if he would like the Alexander/McDonald combo.
BTW another thing I have seen guys talk about is moving Donald to ILB. On paper that’s plausible but then you would still need a DE.
.
..
I saw a blurb somewhere where a guy said not to worry about the 3-4/4-3 distinction with Phillips. He said all Phillips does is have one of his DEs stand up.
Oops. Now I remember where I saw it. It’s from a tweet Ag posted in another thread.
