I agree with Florio. I’m glad they are moving towards the classic blue and white scheme but they should have waited until 2019 when the entire uniform could be changed.

That was a ‘cool’ battle scene.

But as far as the most ‘realistic’ battle scenes go, I remember sitting in a theater watching “Saving Private Ryan” and during the Normandy beach scene an old man sitting near me with tears running down his face told his wife that that was exactly what it was like.

It is very difficult to imagine, at this point, that there is not a significant problem.

I no longer think we are looking at just the sole act of dumping DNC emails in an effort to tip the scales towards Trump. This isn’t just about a foreign policy preference.

There is an entire tangled web of financial shadiness happening here, and I can’t see the administration surviving an honest inquiry. Even if the financial stuff is all “legal,” there are clearly significant ties here that completely compromise Trump’s ability to be impartial on behalf of the USA. He is in this up to his neck in all likelihood, and clearly Tillerson and Ross are without question.

    ————
Well Its not that i disagree with your description of the ‘tangled web of financial shadiness’ but…I dont thihk the the ‘american people’ are gonna care.
I mean Trumps base certainly wont care. And the Dems have zero credibility themselves so whatever they do will look like the usual partisanship-games.

I just think we are past the time when a President can be impeached. The entire system is now BASED on corruption and money and money-influence. The SYSTEM should be ‘impeached’ but it wont be.

Frankly, i think Trump would be more likely to get in trouble for a sex scandal or some BS crap like that. THAT might annoy the voters. Ah well.

    wv cynic

It’s true that Trump’s supporters won’t care. But the majority of the American people care. Trump was the first president ever elected with an approval rating below 50%. Then it got worse. I’m sure his speech gave him a bump up but it won’t last.

The problem is that Congress in controlled by the Republicans. And Trump is doing exactly what the Republicans always wanted (increase military spending, decrease domestic spending, dismantle environmental protections, etc) so why would they impeach him? And even if they did, they won’t impeach Trump’s VP and his cabinet, so impeaching him probably wouldn’t change much.

So ultimately, you’re right. There’s no bright side to be had. The stuff Trump has put in motion won’t be reversed for at least four years and by then, if it happens, a lot of stuff is gonna be irrevocably f’d up.

I don’t have time to go back and search for the link but on twitter a fan asked him why he would leave the Pats since he won a Super Bowl and played 65% of the defensive snaps (most since 2013) which means he met the requirements of his incentive clause. Long replied that in the playoffs he only played on third down and that he only played 3 technique with the Pats. I guess he wants to be a 4-3 DE.

I prefer the single solid stripe like they wore in the 60s. However, I think wearing blue and white pants while the jersey and helmet still have gold is sorta stupid. I don’t like this piecemeal approach to changing the uniform. I know why they’re doing this…they want to keep the fans interested – especially given the lousy season they just had and the Chargers arrival – but still… Just leave the uniforms alone until the big unveiling in 2019.

Having you back here is a huge relief. When you disappeared for days I figured the rapture happened and I was left behind with all of these hellbound sinners. Sure, me missing the rapture sounds ridiculous (it was designed with me in mind for the most part) but computer snafus do happen. For all I knew maybe some of PA’s debauched life got downloaded into my file? Anyway, since you’re back I guess I have nothing to worry about.

We had Comcast as our internet provider for years and I don’t think we had many service issues.

I think it’s time for a split, and I was rather hoping for the announcement of a new party in the wake of this latest DNC bullshit.

Yeah. I think things are bleak regardless but if I’m going down at least I want to go down fighting in a party of compatriots who share my core principles. A party I could finally be proud to be a member of.

The true left is screwed. This election was about the establishment democrats re-exerting their grip on the party and basically telling the left to ‘f’ off.

The fact is we need the democrats to begin to tilt towards the progressive side if we are going to get anything done. But if we have to battle the corporate democrats along with the republicans we’d have a better chance of squeezing a camel through the eye of a needle than nudging the country towards the left.

The same could be said of today’s battle over the DNC and the push to install a loyal technocrat like Perez. This reluctance to cede control comes despite the fact that Democrats have lost over 1,000 state legislature seats since 2009. There is no case for Perez that cannot be made for Ellison, while Ellison is able to energize progressives in ways that Perez cannot. The question that will be answered on Saturday is whether Democrats have more urgent priorities than denying power to the left.

Calling those people researchers is sort of a stretch. They aren’t really conducting research – not in the scientific sense at least. They have already decided Bigfoot/UFOs/Ghosts exist and are cherry picking evidence that fits that belief, although even then their ‘evidence’ is about as flimsy as it could be.

Besides, everyone knows Bigfoot/UFOs and their ilk were invented by the US government to distract us from the kaiju portal located in what is now known as Area 51.

Thing is, if we could coach ’em up, they’d make great defensive tackles. I mean, who’s gonna block them, right?

Yeah but I think we’re already set at DT with Donald and Brockers. Besides, I think the damage they do to the stadium and the number of fans they trample every week might be prohibitive.

Well Jack, on here you can post about any topic you like so if you are bored by the lack of activity here the simple solution is to post more often. The trick is to post about stuff that not only you are interested in but also stuff that you think the other people here would be interested in based on their posting history. That will lead to more activity.

The Whorf theory makes language primarily cultural. We internalize it and its logic as we learn it. Chomsky makes primary linguistic capacity entirely hard-wired psychological, not cultural.

That’s interesting. Coming from a place of almost zero knowledge of linguisitics I would say that Chomsky’s hypothesis makes more sense to me.

From things I’ve read I think the human brain is hard-wired for language. Culture plays a role too – but more along the lines of what language and how a language is spoken. The ‘why’ is because it’s an innate, biological part of us. I mean, we have other physical adaptations for language – especially pertaining to the position and shape of our hyoid bone and larynx, etc…it only makes sense that the brain could be adapted for speech as well…

    It is a good rant.

I have always wondered why the right gets to own God, flag and country.

If a Republican is in office and you oppose him you’re unAmerican.

If a Democrat is in office and you support them you are working against “American values”.

I can tell you this though–the Republican party has become a PARTY FIRST party above anything regarding country. If what is happening now doesn’t prove that I don’t know what will.

I think it stems from the fact that Republicans see things as black or white. Democrats often recognize there are shades of grey. Because Republicans have a simplistic, unambiguous outlook on things, they don’t have to study an issue before making a decision about it. They appear decisive, whereas a Democrat who takes a more measured, reasoned approach is weak. Family values, God, patriotism…these are presented as black and white issues and thus are owned by the Republicans.

He tapped into a vein of concealed bigotry that is now gushing like an oil well in Texas.

I agree with this. And this is a huge portion of how I see it. American right-wing populism has a long deep history of both overt and “under the radar” bigotry. The problem is that many of the people who are most affected by bad economic policies are not particularly interested in analyzing those issues as being economic.

It’s a world where muslims defiantly kill western whites at will so we are war with a religion, and black lives matter types defy ordinary law and order. All of that has gotten worse (from that perspective) in the last couple of years.

You subtract that component and trump doesn’t even win in the republican primaries.

I actually don’t see much of interest in the effort to claim Trump as the bad prophet who tapped into people’s economic malaise. I think it is far more accurate to say he tapped into their ordinary american right-populist racism and xenophobia.

This is why you don’t see any backlash against his economic policies and appointments. Most of his supporters don’t even know about the term “neoliberalism” and so are in no position to notice that if anything, he is a far more dangerous neoliberal crusader than any non-republican who did run against him or (to cast the net wider) even might have opposed him if the primaries had gone differently. To the trumpists, this stuff just does not register. It’s not what counts about him to those who support him.

Bigotry is about fear of the ‘other’. Even though you are more likely to be killed by a toddler with a gun in this country than you are by a Muslim terrorist, somehow Muslim terrorists are the supreme threat to our sovereignty. The GOP has successfully been massaging that ‘fear of the other’ for decades. It’s all a misdirection. Dangle those brown illegal immigrants in front of them to keep them from seeing how our economic policies are killing them.

Maher can be a valuable ally of the left at a time when there are so few that are charismatic and popular and can reach such a large audience. However there are many things about him that I don’t like including his take on PC, white privilege, feminism, Islamophobia, etc.

I see it differently. While that may be true for a portion of them I still believe the majority are low information voters who vote on emotion and feelings and are easily stirred up by the Rush Limbaughs of the world and believe that the government in the enemy–without knowing all the details or that this is not simply a black and white fact.

    Yeah, that’s how see it.

And the things we complain about on this board – the most heinous things like the Muslim ban or his disastrous picks to head up the Dept of Education, the EPA or for Attorney General? His supporters either agree completely with the selectiosn or they don’t care. Instead of being taken aback by his fascist rhetoric regarding the press they cheer him on. I’m getting more and more tired of hearing about how Trump’s power comes from the marginalized working class. He tapped into a vein of concealed bigotry that is now gushing like an oil well in Texas.

There were rumors about bringing back the T-Rex. Not sure if that if possible or not. It would be cool if walking outside of your house one morning for work, and a T-Rex just runs by your front lawn. Science has yet for that to happen.

I wonder if they would be successful in bringing back the Woolly Mammoth, if they would bring back the Woolly Rhino? Just wondering.

Theoretically you could bring back the woolly rhino the same way they want to bring back the mammoth – taking the genes that make it cold adapted and splicing them with the genes from a living rhino. I know some genetic material has been recovered from woolly rhinos preserved in the permafrost but I don’t know if that includes the necessary genetic material that will allow it to survive the winters on the Russian steppes. The problem is, the Sumatran rhino is the closest living relative to the woolly rhino and they are nearly extinct themselves. Our efforts might be better served in trying to preserve the existing rhino species instead of trying to bring long extinct species back. Maybe that’s true for the Asian elephant as well since it is also facing extinction.

Also keep in mind this process doesn’t actually bring the original species back. It just alters an existing species to somewhat look like the extinct species.

As far as T. rex goes, that will never happen. First, genetic material degrades quickly. The youngest T. rex fossil is 66 million years old. Any DNA present would be too degraded to be of use. Secondly, what living animal could serve as a surrogate for the T. rex DNA? The mammoth idea described above only works because there is a living elephant that is very closely related to the mammoth. There is nothing closely related to a T. rex alive today. Yes, technically birds are dinosaurs but they still aren’t closely related enough…

My great fear is the American public eventually becomes so desensitized to the constant deluge of egregious acts coming from the Trump administration and the GOP that it eventually becomes conditioned to a new ‘normality’ where the people just shrug their shoulders in response to the ongoing fascism. Instead of resisting it, they just take comfort the fact that it could be worse…

“What? They’re moving Muslim Americans into internment camps? Well, at least they’re not shooting them. That’s something, right?”
