i think what’s interesting is that they mix and match and disguise all the different plays making them look the same right up until the last second.

i think what cignetti has done is introduced the zone blocking scheme. that’s an element that schotty didn’t incorporate and seems to serve as a nice counter punch to the power schemes they run as well.

stretch them out wide and the counter them with a gurley power run. or hit them the other way with tavon. so in that sense he has found a different way to use austin. or at least that’s how i understand that. when you get gurley stretching the defense one way and then counter with austin going the other way, the defense is stressed in a way they weren’t before the wide zone offense was installed.

so cignetti has added a wrinkle that schotty did not have. and it might have actually increased the effectiveness of players including austin. although having gurley there doesn’t hurt.

the defense should have no problems with the browns. i don’t care what the stats say. they’ve competed against some of the best backfields in the nfl and contained them. maybe they haven’t shut them down, but they’ve contained them. they shouldn’t have a problem with cleveland.

on offense, they should run them ragged. mason should be involved as well. even if they can’t get the passing game going, they should be able to run the ball effectively.

if they get outplayed, then i will be very disappointed. that would be a huge step back.

I’ll be disappointed if the Rams don’t win by at least 10 points.

yes. they should beat them handily.

i really will be disappointed. i mean barring some catastrophic injury to a key player. there’s no reason the rams shouldn’t beat this team. and not just beat them barely. they’re playing at home. against a journeyman qb and a lousy defense.

it’s worth watching. i don’t know if it’s true, but it sounds really good… haha!

a very nice simplified description of the different components and philosophies that go into their running game and how austin and gurley make it go. bottom line is they are both fantastic athletes and really stress and stretch out the defense. also sounds like they are able to do it in a way that makes it hard for defenses to key in on what they are doing.

just need to find a way to play off this and get other guys going. but a good foundation is a start.

i’m ok with reynolds. saffold wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire this season anyway.

and they got some good developmental prospects for next season.

yeah. makes me excited that this running game could be something special. maybe even a little unpredictable. good description too of how the passing game might play off this gurley austin combo.

I heard this on 101, the Rams had the hardest schedule for the first 5 games and now have the 30th hardest schedule left.

yeah. and that’s why i expect this team to make a run. really no more excuses.

to be fair i’m not saying that he would be fired. i’m just saying i would wonder out loud whether fisher should be let go. my personal feeling is that he should be let go if there was a viable candidate out there. and that isn’t even to say i would know who that candidate would be if he’s even out there.

For better or worse, rightly or wrongly, I figure
Kroenke will give Fisher a fifth
year, as long as he hovers around .500 this year.

I mean, a change now, might make things worse. Ya know.
The players know this system — would they play better
if they had to learn a new system?

At any rate, yeah, the team has an opportunity
here to make a run. If they dont, I’m gonna
be quite disappointed. They have the talent.

Run Gurley, run Tavon, dont turn it over.

    w
    v

sometimes change can be good though. i’d guess that a lot of it would depend on who was available. i mean wouldn’t just make a change to make it but if there was a good young candidate available i would consider it.

but it’s too soon to even consider something like that.

when a qb is already trying to figure out timing and chemistry with his receivers i imagine those problems get exacerbated when he’s under constant pressure throwing off what little timing they’ve established.

i believe in foles. and i’ve seen enough flashes to believe there’s better days ahead for the offense. i think there’s a competent passing game somewhere in there.

foles hits kendricks. and the play was there to be made. you’re looking at 17-21 with 3 minutes to play. eliminate those earlier mistakes and maybe they’re even leading going into the fourth quarter. the rams don’t need him to be great. just a little smarter.

foles needs to take care of the ball. he and the receivers need to keep grinding in practice. and the oline needs to keep getting experience. i don’t think these are impossible things to do.

well from game to game it’s too hard to gauge accurately. he’s gone against some great dlineman especially this last game.

i’m more interested in an overall picture from game 1 to game 16. so basically i’m saying i’m gonna wait until the end of the season or at least another 5 games before forming an opinion.

i think patience is needed with this guy. especially considering the position he plays and how raw he is.

yeah. if they can’t make a run here, i seriously gotta wonder if the rams need to be thinking about a new head coach.

at this point with the talent they’ve added it’s time we see some results.

i hope that oline is working out the kinks during the bye week.

by the end of the season we should have a much better idea of what the rams have in robinson. we’re not gonna have the whole picture, but we should have an idea. if he has made no progress by the end of the season, i will officially be worried.

let me also add that this oline as a whole has gone against two really tough front sevens in arizona and green bay. hopefully, they gotta lot of tape now to look at during the bye week. iron out some of the mistakes.

i still have faith in robinson. he’s got it all. and he works hard. is his head swimming right now? probably. but it’s only his sophomore season. the line as a whole is young. he’s playing next to a rookie. i’ll give him time. boudreau said he has more potential than willie roaf. i believe him.

Gurley added he specifically felt that way about a couple runs in the first quarter against the Packers.

“Just trying to get a feel for the game, I feel like a lot of times I might miss a couple reads at the beginning of the game,” Gurley said. “But I’ll get it together once you get to the end.”

this guy is still adjusting to the speed of the nfl game. the physicality.

but that’s to be expected this early in his career. man but imagine when he does adjust. and imagine when the offensive line starts to gel. or rather. hopefully it gels.

and he finally takes that knee brace off.

Wow. Hi, guys. Nice to feel missed.

I think you can assume that! We’re an old community and I think everyone in it means something to everyone else, and you’re a big part of all that. That’s my sense of it anyway.

    I second that.

And also wish to state I miss California Tom. Pound for pound, no poster amused me more.

i don’t think i’ve been here as long as most of you guys. but i have been reading a lot of people here for going on close to 20 years maybe?

i don’t think any running back period could handle that kind of a workload. i’d venture to guess that no one in the history of this game has ever had to shoulder 30 carries a game.

If it’s any consolation Fisher did say this

    @nwagoner

On Todd Gurley’s workload, Fisher said he didn’t plan for 30 carries for Gurley and acknowledged that’s not sustainable moving forward.

i’m sure it wasn’t planned. but that’s why you give mason a set amount of carries a game. gurley then is the variable. now that’s flexible. like for example if the rams are blowing a team out or are getting blown out then mason sees more carries.

but mason getting 2 carries a game is unacceptable to me. not when gurley is less than a year removed. fatigue comes into play when the carries get that high. just concede the loss at that point and think long term.

one thing on foles. he is entering his fourth year. including the 5 games he’s started this year, he’s at a grand total of 29 starts.

that’s not quite even 2 full seasons as a full time starter. on top of that five of those games are with new coaches. new teammates. he’s looked good. he’s looked really really bad.

i want to wait until the end of the season before i make any real judgment on this guy. he’s still being molded right now. i want to wait a little longer when he’s more finished.

i agree, rfl. but. and i just have to add this. i talk about this incessantly.

the packers have the second best. currently. pass rush in the league. a legendary coordinator in capers.

these next 11 games they’ll maybe have to face something like that 3 times? cincinnati, detroit, and tampa bay currently rank in the top 10 in pass rushing.

but yeah. the offensive line needs to improve. it’s not a guarantee that they will. but i think they will.

    2) We wondered when the Rams acquired Nick Foles whether he was the 27 touchdown, two interception quarterback of 2013, or the thirteen TD, ten interception thrower of last season. So far, it appears to be the latter.

With his TD pass and four interceptions (two inside the Packer ten yard line), Foles has six TD’s and five picks. Granted, he was under duress, but you just can’t throw the ball to the other team. And when you get to the red zone, as a quarterback you have to give your team a chance to score points. The two red zone picks didn’t give the kicking game a chance.

i think he’ll end up being somewhere in between.

    3) Todd Gurley looks like a potential star, with 305 yards in his first two NFL starts. I do wonder if, coming off an ACL injury, he can carry the burden of thirty carries a game. He had thirty on Sunday, and had 21 touches against Arizona. It’ll be interesting to see how much of a workload the Rams give him after the bye.

i don’t think any running back period could handle that kind of a workload. i’d venture to guess that no one in the history of this game has ever had to shoulder 30 carries a game. and even 25 carries a game is way too much. most running backs completely break down after a 400 carry season. at the very most you want 22 carries. and in this situation having mason. you have the luxury of getting that number down to 18-19 carries. that would put him at about 300 for a 16 game season. that’s what they need to be shooting for.

i would second that. wherever you are.

this has been a roller coaster season so far. but i think the storm is nearing an end. i hope. is that a mixed metaphor?

come back if you have a chance.

We turned Rogers into an ordinary QB. We did it wo/ blitzing.

The GBay defense is better than I thought it was. They played almost as good as our defense. imo They couldn’t stop Gurley. I hope we don’t wear Gurley out before he gets is brace off. 😉

i am worried that fisher will overuse him. he ran chris johnson ragged his sophomore year. i think he overused eddie george too.

gurley is averaging his last two starts nearly 25 carries a game. less than a year removed from knee surgery. that doesn’t jive with me. they have to back off in my opinion.

an optimal gurley in my opinion should only be getting 18-19 carries a game. throw in several receptions in there as well. get mason another 5 carries a game. he’s only averaged 2 per game the last 2…. i mean he’s a starting caliber nfl running back. use him. keep gurley fresh. not just for the game. but for the season. for his career. let mason soften them up a little bit for gurley.

if it was me. i’d designate 5-6 carries for mason. in the second and third quarters. then let gurley have the rest depending on how the game is going. sprinkling in mason additionally as needed.

the rams should be a much different team those last 6 games.

Barring injury, I bet that’s likely.

and you know. people might say well that’s true of any team. what makes the rams any different?

well. maybe. but specifically looking at the offensive line. they start 2 rookies and one greener than most sophomore left tackle. so i’d guess that it’s “truer” for this team which is one of the youngest in the league and specifically for this offensive line than most other teams.

couple that with foles who is in his first year under this system and receivers he’s never played with before…

ya know. seattle had similar problems at offensive line beginning this season. but. wilson knows the offense. he’s been in it for several years. i’m guessing he’s familiar with many of his teammates. they do have to integrate jimmy graham. but many of his receivers are still there. baldwin. kearse.

the rams? as far as i can tell zero games with his receivers and tight ends. new offense. new coaches. on top of that they’re installing a new zone scheme which is stalling the running game. so yeah. lots of moving parts. lots of young guys unfamiliar with one another. but. not just with one another. but with another level of competition.

now might we see this rams offense see a similar improvement in performance as LAST year’s rams DEFENSE? well. i wouldn’t quite expect THAT kind of ascension. but i do expect to see SOME improvement.

by the way… this just makes gurley’s first two starts that much more startling. truly inspiring. pure fucking genius this gurley. just gotta get him involved in the passing game.

    i think we can, ag.

i think the oline continues to get better. those tough games you mention are later on in the season hopefully when the oline has more games under its belt. i also think the coaches need to be looking into ways to get the backs more involved in the passing game. that’s a facet of gurley’s game that isn’t being exploited like it should or could be. but maybe they need him to stay in and help protect. i don’t know.

but yeah. the rams aren’t gonna face many pass rushes with the potency of a green bay packers defense. currently cincinnati, detroit, and tampa bay rank in the top 10 in sacks but again they are later in the season when. hopefully. the pass protection has tightened up a bit.

furthermore outside of baltimore which ranks 14th and san francisco which ranks 16th the other 3 teams in those first five games rank near the bottom in rush defense. todd should have a field day.

just seems like the schedule is set up in the rams’ favor. it’s up to them to take advantage or just completely blow it.

    Avatar photoInvaderRam

If we want to be 10 – 6, we probably have to win 4 of the next 5, then 4 of the next 6 games. Maybe we can win 5 of the next 5? Winning 5 of 5 is hard to do, but they are all weaker teams.

i think they very well could go 5 of 5 after the bye which would put them at 7-3.

the remaining 6 games i see seattle, cincinnati, and arizona as tough games. but i can see them beating cincinnati. and we also gotta remember that the oline should continue to gel throughout the season and foles should develop more of a rapport with his receivers. the rams should be a much different team those last 6 games.

so yeah 10-6 is possible. if they go 8-8 i would be very disappointed.
