Now we need a Center and help on the DLine. I’m assuming a Center or 3-4 DE will be picked with our 2nd round pick.

i wonder if they’d take mcdowell if he got to them. i also wonder how they rank kpassagnon.

also maybe sanbagger gets his wish and elfein becomes a target with that second rounder.

now i’m imagining the rams draft bucky hodges with their second round pick.

they need a tight end. higbee and hemingway aren’t going to cut it. and neither is that converted tight end they just signed. maybe they sign a fa, but i’m guessing they draft one.

me: pretty much sounds like a younger, less expensive Garcon.

i don’t know about in terms of style or anything, but statistically his first four years are comparable to garcon.

so i found this interesting tidbit. whitworth was a championship tennis player in the state of louisiana.

i’ve heard of football players with a background in basketball and wrestling. but never tennis. i don’t know what to make of it yet.

I love the Whitworth signing. Whitworth, GRob, C, Saffold, Havenstein looks like a pretty decent o-line depending on what they do at center.

I think they might have overpaid for Woods whose production makes him seem like a younger version of Britt but he may not have hit his ceiling yet and they needed a WR so it’s all good…

oh i like the whitworth signing. just not sure yet about the woods signing. but maybe he gets better. could be a late bloomer like garcon was. he’s been solid so far in his career. and he’s still young.

i think this sets them up well for the draft.

a little underwhelmed, but with what garcon was getting i’m fine with it. this is a not too expensive deal for a somewhat productive guy who will only be 25 come april.

he probably is what he is though with not too much room to improve. but maybe.

at this point i’d be over the moon if they could add one of the premium tight ends in this draft or just draft defense for rounds 2-4.

    either way i’ll be happy.

i’ll say this. he’s performed at a high level, and while he’s 35 years old, his body hasn’t been beaten up like your typical 35 year old nfl body has. he came into the league as a 25 year old. he’s only been playing at the professional level for 11 years. and olineman can typically play longer anyway, so hopefully he’s taking care of his body.

and this draft class was pretty horrible at tackle.

hmmm. i don’t see why a team would trade a draft pick for trujo when this draft is supposed to be loaded with cornerbacks.

tyus bowser is a freak of nature.

can’t post his exact numbers right now.

    but approximately

    6’3″ 247 pounds
    33″ arms
    10″ hands
    4.65 40
    6.75 3-cone
    37″ vertical
    10’7″ broad

this guy has huge upside too. made the houston basketball team as a guard his freshman and sophomore years so he must be athletic.

i could see them using brockers some at defensive end like in obvious running situations.

but yeah. they need a defensive end. i don’t think hayes is gonna cut it.

    This is my hope:

    link: http://theramshuddle.com/topic/free-agent-top-100-salary-ranges/

    24. WR Pierre Garcon (30) — $8.5-10.5 million/year – Run-after-catch specialist has become one of the NFL’s best route runners. Great hands: Has dropped only 8-of-330 targets (2.4%) over the last three years.

that’s mine as well. just makes too much sense. not too expensive. knows the system. very underrated. could be very good for the young guys. actually i don’t know that last part. i have no idea who he is as a person or if he’d even want to be a mentor. but the other parts are true.

he seems to like mcvay, so i think there’s a chance. but does he really want to play with goff who’s completely unproven.

too many stars here. i feel overwhelmed having just watched that.

some that i like who could be available at that second round pick

    budda baker
    chidobe awuzie
    gareon conley
    fabian moreau
    marcus williams

there are so many more. i’m missing some. it’s crazy. i don’t ever remember seeing a class like this. by far the strongest i would guess of any position. and the rams seriously need some dbacks.

if i had to rank, i’d say.

defensive back (safety and a corner needed)

offensive line (left tackle and a center)

wr/te (i include them together cuz really either one would do in this offense. mcvay loves tight ends)

    outside linebacker

    defensive end

me personally. i think they’re better off signing cheap veteran talent at offensive line and one premium signing at wide receiver. i don’t think drafting more young guys is going to help much. get somebody who’s ready to step in day 1.

draft defense. this is a strong draft for defense. you can draft a guy and reasonably expect him to start right away.

after watching the defensive backs today, i’m confident they can find a starter at corner, safety, and outside linebacker at least. if they just stay disciplined and stick to the draft board. they could put out a great defense next year if they draft right.

on offense, if they can make key free agent additions at wide receiver and offensive line and if goff can improve, they should be fine there. draft an offensive lineman who needs to be developed. or draft a wide receiver who isn’t quite ready to step in and start. they’re no better than they were last year.

probably not an exact fit, so wade will have to make some adjustments most likely.

ideally i’d want him to be a little bigger. at least 15 pounds heavier. i wonder if it’s possible for him to add more weight.

ok now this is just ridiculous. looked up tj watt’s short shuttle and 3-cone times.

short shuttle was 4.13 seconds. 3-cone was 6.79.

ridiculous. both place him in the top 2 for his position. combine that with his relentless motor. this guy has only been playing his position for 2 years. imagine what he’d look like in 2 more years. and if he’s anything like his brother, he lives and breathes football.

yeah. this defensive class is loaded. one could easily get 4 starters on defense this year without a first round pick. that’s how strong this defensive class is.

I don’t think Bonsignore has any idea how much talent is or isn;t already on the offensive roster.

The coaches are still learning themselves.

But Bonsignore seems to talk like there’s none at all.

    I personally don’t buy that.

    .,

i don’t either, and i also don’t think the answer is by getting even younger on offense. in fact i think that’s the exact opposite of what goff would need unless there’s blue chip talent to be had there. sign some veteran talent. a veteran wr and some up and coming oline talent and i think there’s some talent already on the team that can be developed.

meanwhile the defense has some glaring holes that could be filled with some serious talent on what might be the strongest defensive class the league has seen in a long time.

maybe this is some kind of smokescreen.

close to 60 high impact players with pro bowlers on the DE and DB front.

this is why you go all in on defense. i think wide receiver can and should get addressed in free agency.

as far as oline this is a weak class.

the only one i’d really consider is the tight end position. just because of the quality this class has.

tj watt. brother of jj watt. so yeah. he’s gonna get hype. but here’s the thing. wade phillips coached jj in houston. that’s one thing. he’s only played linebacker for 2 years. converted from tight end. so he’s raw. but if he’s anything like his brother, he’s going to be a relentless worker. wade’s gonna like that.

he also might drop considering the amount of talent in this year’s class of linebackers and edge rushers.

the only drawback i can think of is his injury history. he’s had problems staying healthy.

    6’4″ 252 pounds
    33.125″ arms
    11″ hands
    40 – 4.69s
    vert – 37″
    broad – 128″
    ss – ?
    3-cone – ?

i’d take him in round 3.

They could get an OLB/edge rusher, a CB, a FS, a DE, and a WR …all in rounds 2-5.

they totally could do that. that’s how deep this draft is i think.

    jordan willis
    6’4″ 255 pounds
    33.5″ arms
    9 7/8″ hands
    40 – 4.53s (1.54s 10 yard split!!!)
    vert – 39″
    broad – 125″
    ss – 4.28s
    3-cone – 6.85s

very solid production. high motor. he’s not going to even go in the first round i don’t think.

Hmmm…Kupp possibly dropping to 37? I would be very interested in him at that spot.

i do like kupp. he’s not fast, but he’s quick.

short shuttle – 4.08 (5th best among wideouts)
    3-cone – 6.75 (9th best among wideouts)

and then of course insane production.

rams have needs at secondary, but they also need to bolster the pass rush and run defense in my opinion. there are plenty of athletes here to choose from.

i’d almost rather they go all in on defense this draft.

bolster the offensive line through some cheap fa additions. and address wide receiver by making one big signing – say a pierre garcon. if they could somehow pull off a trade for brandin cooks – even better. and then develop what they have. they have some talent on offense – they’re just young. guys like cooper and higbee and hemingway and spruce. they’re young. can’t give up on them.

but make this defense even better than it was last year. this is the year to do it. they cannot fall into the trap of just drafting offense for the sake of drafting offense.

would you trade the 2018 first round pick for brandin cooks???

    i would. i wouldn’t even blink.

    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/saints-reportedly-reject-patriots-offer-of-no-32-pick-in-package-for-brandin-cooks/

According to Katzenstein, the Saints want a pick in the middle of the first round, which is something the Patriots are lacking in this year’s draft. The Eagles and Titans, however, are slotted to pick 14th and 18th, respectively.

i’m really curious to see what they come up with for the running game.

mcvay and kromer with exposure to the gruden offense with callahan and mcvay and lafleur with exposure to the shanahan offense. plus kromer and the greg roman offense.

    lots of different perspectives there.

    Good stuff IR.

I don’t think they are gonna give up on either Higbee or Hemingway…the only problem I saw with Higbee was he couldn’t block…he was just manhandled when he was tasked with blocking.

I looked at Reeds numbers and they really took off once McV started calling the plays, that leads me to believe he really regards the TE spot as a weapon….so, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some additions in that area. Also, much to my chagrin, I don’t think they are gonna let Kendricks go either. I actually compared Reeds numbers and Kendricks numbers and they were very comparable prior to McV….maybe LK can salvage his once promising career.

they’ve been talking higbee up recently. makes me think they’ll sit tight with what they have there.

my main concern with higbee is he seems to get nicked up every year. hasn’t played a full season in three years i think.

in reply to: tight end group #65873
    Avatar photoInvaderRam

I like Engram and would not be opposed to that….and, that might spell the end of Kendricks which I’m not opposed to either

i don’t know that it would mean the end of kendricks. i think it’d be more the end of higbee and/or hemingway. i’ve read differing things on engram as a blocker. even if he was capable, i’d think he would be used mainly as a receiver his rookie season.

my guess is he goes in the first round. the only thing holding him back is if someone really falls in love with njoku and the strength of the defensive class pushes him down. edge rushers are going to go fast and furious in the first round. defensive ends too. defensive back could possibly be stronger than either of those positions. so that might push engram down into the rams’ range.

i like hodges too. unreal explosiveness on tape from what i’ve read (ya know everything i write should be taken with a grain of salt cuz i don’t really watch college sports. i just read about it). and it shows in the testing too. 39″ vertical and 11’2″ broad jump (a record by the way for tight ends)! that’s crazy given that he’s 257 pounds. but he too is not much of a blocker. he’d be used out wide and in the slot i suspect. much like a jimmy graham. in fact, if you measure them side by side, they’re very similar – in terms of size, speed, and explosiveness. the catch with hodges is he’s only played the position for three years. he came to va tech as a quarterback. so he’ll probably slide into the second round. that could actually work to the rams’ advantage, but he’s a project somewhat.

mcvay, however, might have a particular affinity to tight ends having coached there and featured them as well in his offense as a coordinator. he’s at least partly responsible for having developed jordan reed. reed and davis both loved him at washington.

i just don’t see the talent at wide receiver that i do in the tight ends. part of me feels like the rams should try and develop higbee and hemingway who both seem to have talent, but how does one ignore the athleticism at that position this year? if the rams really want to upgrade their skill position players, that would be a good place to start in my opinion. again, given the mcvay offense and the role tight ends played in it the last two years.
