The Rams hold a 42-40-1 edge in a series that began in Cleveland in 1937. Since the move to St. Louis in 1995, the teams have met seven times, but just once — a 41-33 Rams win in 2006 — in St. Louis.

I was at that game with Les Baker. Remember when the Rams used to score?

The Lions promoted 31-year-old quarterbacks coach Jim Bob Cooter to offensive coordinator.

    Really.

    In Detroit.

With a name like that, this guy shouldn’t even travel, much less coach, north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

I actually liked Kurt Warner in preseason that year. But, you know, that meant nothing. I am going to say you knew he was real about 5 or 6 games into the season. And, Joe makes a great point about that Titans loss. Our RT, Fred Miller, almost single-handedly lost that game. He couldn’t block Peppers and must have had 4 illegal motion penalties. The crowd was nutz! But, the Rams kept plugging away. I wonder what it would be like watching that game again, and paying attention to how Fisher coached that second half. Did the offense play too conservative and allow the Rams to get back into it?

That was just such a talented Rams squad. I would give the tip of my right pinkie finger to have that type of talent back in horns again.

Not with a high draft pick, anyway. Projects are for later in the draft.

I had a bad feeling about G-Rob, by the way. I still think he could be pretty damn good. But, remember, the Rams were looking for great, like all-time great, with that pick. They’d just have to coach him up. It’s taking way longer than what they ever expected.

Is that orangutan video a metaphor of some kind?

Yes. Just trying to weave some humor in. In the vid, there is something at first, then nothing, which the orangutan finds funny. The joke is that’s like the offense. Started out okay, then nothing.

Maybe it’s hard to find humor in this?

    .

OK, I watched this first thing this morning, and I was not getting it. I was focusing on the ape. I thought, well, maybe he’s like an O-lineman, falling down, from injury perhaps, or getting pushed over. Maybe the magic was like defensive fronts and the orangutan like our O-line. Maybe.

But, now I get it. Yes, first it was there, then it was gone. And, everyone’s laughing, ha-ha-ha … except Rams’ fans, that is.

It’s been two years. He should be a lot better by now. Maybe it’s time to replace the OL coach, too. I know that Boudreau has a great reputation. Maybe he’s lost a step as a coach.

I think that’s why I would be OK with moving on from Fisher. Let’s see if someone else can change the culture. I hate to do it again. I like continuity. Hell, I’d love for some continuity … but Fisher’s been here long enough to get a good idea of what he’s about. And, it’s always about inconsistency.

Penalties, penalties, penalties…. they had 100 yards in penalties AGAIN yesterday……….. Fisher’s team has NO discipline.

Interestingly, in his press conference today, Fisher cited the pre-snap penalties on offense as a reason for the change in OC. Hmm. It’s as if this problem just started this year. Fisher added that there needed to be more accountability for mistakes on offense. Again, you could say that for the entire team, and for the offense going back years.

Seems like a desperation move, but maybe there was more to it than that.

I just know that I’m watching other games yesterday where quarterbacks were given as much time as Foles and WRs just as open, and were hitting them for big gainers. The OC can’t throw the ball. Maybe they’re blaming Cignetti for Foles’ regression, or at least partly blaming him. Maybe they think Boras can do better, but wouldn’t Boras be part of the problem since he’s also involved with the offense?

I don’t think Fisher knows offense, and I don’t think he’s good at finding receiving threats. Britt? Cook? These are his guys? Quick was never a good answer to any question. And, yet, they’ve done nothing to upgrade the passing offense. They just got rid of Givens. And, they drafted an LT who was a project with upside. Let’s wait a little in the draft to find projects.

This team is very young, still. They needed to find veterans in key spots. And, on offense, it seems that the veterans are not leaders by example.

The thing that gets me the most is how many pre-snap penalties this team still makes. On offense, going back 5 yards is as good as giving up the possession.

Mistake after mistake after mistake. I think that’s why I would be OK with moving on from Fisher. Let’s see if someone else can change the culture. I hate to do it again. I like continuity. Well, I guess they felt like might as well give someone else a shot.

Wasn’t Boras like 1B on the hiring list this offseason?

I personally don’t blame the OC. What the hell does he have to work with?

    1) Need better talent evaluators, if these guys made the trade for Foles, thinking he was a legit QB or going out of the their way to get Head Case Keenum back in camp, then these guys need to bring Don Klosterman back from the dead….. the RAMS need talent eval guys who can find talent in the mid rounds…. this staff hasn’t done it for the skill positions…and the FAs (Kenny Brit and Dane Cook) are Fisher bonus moody babies from Fisher’s past life that are not difference makers…..

I was actually thinking about this during the game yesterday. I think they’ve been OK in the draft … except for missing on G-Rob (yes, I’m calling it a miss at LT) and passing on WR that year. But, they sure haven’t been good in evaluating their own talent, nor other teams’ pro talent. They’ve really screwed the pooch at WR and LT. Long was about done with his injuries, then they take G-Rob. So many times we heard that they would be OK at WR, but week after week the Rams face teams with 2 or 3 better starting wideouts better than the Rams’ bunch. I wonder if this crew knows how to evaluate, or use, the WR position.

And, Cook. Cook is a the prime example of how Fisher values guys he knows, to a fault. Fisher had to know that guy was a space cadet. I know that coaches think they can “coach up” a headcase and make him special. You know that Cook has physical talent. Anyone can see that. But, do you want him out there as a key element to your offense? For big free agent TE money? No way.

But, when you continue to get guys like that, you continue to make mistakes. G-Rob might fit in the Cook category of physical freak/nothing upstairs.

What’s weird is that when they went for the opposite type of guy, Barrett Jones, he couldn’t break the starting line-up.

There’s a lot of blame to go around for how the Rams got here. It’s just unbelievable that this team is this bad this far into the season yet again. I don’t know if you can keep giving this group more chances. But, it doesn’t matter anyway: The only thing the owner is interested in right now is how he can get out of St. Louis. I wouldn’t think he’d change the head coach or GM until after he can make a move.

I’d get Mannion ready to go right away if I thought he could do any better than what they have. I’ll defer to the coaches. I mean, I wondered why Keenum wasn’t in there a week earlier, and then I see Keenum, and man, he’s just awful. So, they tried to get Foles back on track as long as they could. It didn’t work. So, you try Keenum. Who makes me yearn for Austin Davis. I bet Mannion would struggle, too.

There’s just no good place to go on offense. And, now the defense is starting to struggle at times.

We’ve got ourselves a full-on meltdown, and there’s not one QB on this team who can turn it around. It’s going to take a lot of players playing better, and getting healthier.

This offense is not just on the QB or the O-Line, imo. The WRs are just bad in general. Just a below par group. Tavon Austin is more a wild card type of position, getting many of his yards on misdirection and creating in space. I have to say that the Rams have done a very good job of giving him more chances this year to create plays. And, even with his improvement, the other WRs STILL can’t make plays. They have airheads like Cook and inconsistent vets like Quick and Britt, and little else. I really think that Welker is now the team’s best WR threat. He may be the only dependable one.

I thought the O-line was just getting it together before blowing up with injuries. I like the idea of moving G-Rob inside and drafting a LT high … the problem is that they need to draft LT, QB and WR all high, and might need to draft CB high, too, with JJ’s contract coming due.

And, even if they could draft all of those positions, and hit on every pick, I’d say that this offense wouldn’t reach its potential for a couple more years. How long a window do we have with this defense?

I was pleasantly surprised when they scored their second touchdown. And, just as soon as they got the extra point blocked, I knew. Just knew. Another fumble, and another fumble … and just one mistake after another.

Here’s the deal with this team: Blame the O-line injuries, sure. Quinn being out didn’t help. But, what I saw out there was a good enough performance from the fill-ins to win that game.

There were four turnovers, three either by, or caused by, first-round picks:

    Tavon muffs a punt.

    Gurley fumbles.

And, the worst to me, was Greg Robinson getting beat in crunch time, just flat-out toasted, and Keenum getting stripped.

Then, there’s your drafted kicker, who you can not count on in the clutch, either.

Now, on to Case Keenum. Whew boy. I really did not know that he had such a pop gun arm. This is our backup? This is who beat out Austin Davis? Man alive. Who knew it was possible to take steps back year after year at the QB position?

Even having said that, he made a few plays: And, just as bad as the turnovers, was the only long pass play down the middle that was called back because of stupid penalties.

It’s a frustrating loss because this team has potential, and then never realizes that potential. This team has more talent now (aside from QB), but still blows it. How many times is a big play called back due to penalty? How many times do they allow a big play when the game’s on the line?

And, it’s getting to the point to where I expect it. I just can feel the bad things coming on.

Ah, well. They’ll be LA’s problem, soon. The Raiders are starting to look a little better. They’ve got a decent young QB. Maybe they’ll end up in STL.

Well, Foles was playing so poorly that I don’t think Fisher had any choice. But, yeah, Case Keenum isn’t going to lead this team to the Super Bowl. Time to address the passing game this offseason, I’d say.
