just over this past one week:
—New York legalized marijuana & adopted nation’s strictest law against solitary confinement
    —Virginia legalized marijuana
—New Mexico ended qualified immunity (& almost there on weed)
—Washington State restored voting rights to tens of thousands

    Solitary confinement is horrible.

    https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/10.1146/annurev-criminol-032317-092326

    Abstract
A robust scientific literature has established the negative psychological effects of solitary confinement. The empirical findings are supported by a theoretical framework that underscores the importance of social contact to psychological as well as physical well-being. In essence, human beings have a basic need to establish and maintain connections to others and the deprivation of opportunities to do so has a range of deleterious consequences. These scientific conclusions, as well as concerns about the high cost and lack of any demonstrated penological purpose that solitary confinement reliably serves, have led to an emerging consensus among correctional as well as professional, mental health, legal, and human rights organizations to drastically limit the practice.

I read only the first ten or so responses to this, but it all seemed pretty solid.

I agree with this. I think Obama could have been the counterweight to Reagan. He had the charisma, the popularity, the ability to paint a vision, and he had the attention of the nation.

But he sold out the country before he ever took office. He filled his cabinet with Goldman Sachs. In light of that, I don’t know why so many people believe he meant well, but just couldn’t overcome the machine. Not only did he never try, he allied with the machine from the beginning. He should be reviled widely as a self-serving, opportunistic, bald-faced liar. But somehow, the only people who hate him are the racists.

I don’t know how well you remember this. But on the first huddle board, when we had an open political discussion forum, we were discussing Hillary v. Obama during the primaries. As that discussion went along we (including you) paid pretty close attention to who was choosing for appointments. All of scrutinized that stuff pretty closely. (The first red flag was universal health care, which he shot down with a machine gun.) It became pretty clear pretty quickly that he was just a replay of the old Clinton style dem centrist vision. We knew before he took office.

And yeah you’re right, he had the goods to be something else, and it was all just for show. He talked the talk pretty well on race, gender, and sexuality issues, which just made him a more inclusive version of the old dem centrist machine.

I;m not being weird btw, I just remember those discussions is all. We were all very good at helping each other reality test the Obama election.

Yeah, I remember. We also posted opensecrets stuff about where his donations we coming from. I remember well. Back in 2008, I still had some hope that we could reverse course, and he “had the goods.” At this point, it’s hard to know who is most to blame for destroying us all. So many candidates – Powell, Rand, Reagan, Weyrich, Murdoch, Clinton, Kochs, and so on. And Obama.

But it’s over now. There will be no swing back to even an FDR-level of less terrible capitalism as long as the government remains capable of governing. They are privatizing water, militarizing the border, and turning the police into an army to destroy the inevitable uprising, and that’s where we are headed now. There will be no savior from within.

I’m so far to the Doomer-Left these days, I
am having a hard time seeing how Biden is better than Trump.

Foreign Policy? Biden is mass-murdering people in Yemen,
    Afghanistan, Syria, Palestine (through Israel)…
Cuba? Sanctions. Venezuela? Nope. Enlightened policy anywhere?

Climate change? He’s not a denier but he’s also totally,
utterly, completely in the pocket of the Big-Corpse/CIA

Domestic Policy? Health Care? Nope. Minimum Wage? Nope.
    Fracking? Nope. Police Reform? Nope.

I’m not emotionally invested in saying Biden is no better than Trump,
I’m just saying I am having a hard time seeing how Biden is
significantly better than Donald, Ass-Clown-Fascist, Trump.

If the Biosphere wasnt dying, I might care more about the
plethora of minor policies where there might be stark differences.

But the question of Biden vs Trump takes place in a context of
worsening extinction rates, worsening climate change, worsening environmental pollution… That context makes it harder and harder for me to
    see a ‘meaningful’ difference.

I’m probably wrong about this, but thats where I’m at.

I don’t like Biden one bit but he is clearly better than Trump. Your only argument is that he does not have progressive/leftist policies. Yeah well we knew that going in. But even this kind of died-in-the-wool deep committed Dem centrist is better than Trump. That doesn’t mean “good enough” but Trump is a very low bar and it’s easy to clear that bar. For example, he’s not encouraging and participating in racist discourse and he’s not encouraging and participating in dangerously untruthful discourse about covid and vaccination.

    It’s a long list.

You add it all up and it’s nowhere near enough. We know that.

But STILL, even given that, to me, you honestly seem to be forgetting how exactly fucking bad Trump was.

Well, nothing you said there was convincing, zn. Trump used racist language.
Biden doesnt. Ok. Biden is still mass-murdering people of color all over the globe and building up a militarized-police force and building up the CIA,
    etc, etc.

Its not that I have forgotten how bad Trump was.

Biden just seems like a different ‘kind’ of racist to me.
