For the 2nd time this season, Puka Nacua has been voted the NFLā€™s Rookie of the Week following his 163-yard day against the Colts.

Pretty much the entire league missed on Nacua. I couldn’t find anyone or any draft service, pre-draft, who had him rated as worthy of an early pick. All kinds of receivers were slotted ahead of him. Boiled down, he was thought to be too slow and too banged up.

But the Rams apparently dug a bit deeper on this one and utilized Next Gen stats, saw that his GPS speed crushed his 40 time, and took a risk that he’d get healthy.

He’s got Rookie of the Year written all over him, and if he stays healthy, he’s a likely pro-bowler, season after season. He basically has it all: size, good speed (20.7 mps at the Senior Bowl; 21.05 as a Ram), great attitude, heart, good hands, etc. From the outside looking in, he’s a coach’s dream.

Kupp is 30 now. The Rams need to find another guy to pair with Puka for the long haul. But in the near-term, Kupp and Nacua make for a seriously dynamic duo.

plus he’s young and still raw. i think with kupp he came in already pretty polished. sure there was still a learning curve but he had a pretty high floor.

i think nacua has a lot of potential still to tap into.

Rams rookie star Puka Nacua plays with a very physical style. Is it sustainable?

Rams get lots of bang, Puka Nacua lots of bruises, from receiverā€™s painstaking play

    GARY KLEIN

    https://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/story/2023-11-23/rams-puka-nacua-injuries-receiver-rookie-season

Puka Nacua has learned valuable lessons during his record-setting rookie season, which has featured dozens of catches ā€” and corresponding hits absorbed and delivered.

How does the Rams receiver deal with the sometimes-painful days after?

    ā€œMotion is lotion,ā€ Nacua said.

Nacuaā€™s physical playing style, and the weekly aftermath, supplied him with a new appreciation for cold tubs and other rehabilitative resources. But the best way to play through bumps and bruises, he said, is to not sit still, even on days off.

    ā€œMovement does help,ā€ Nacua said.

Despite injured ankle, Ramsā€™ Cooper Kupp might be able to play Sunday at Arizona
    Nov. 20, 2023

Early in the season, with star receiver Cooper Kupp on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury, Nacua rocketed to the top of the NFL receiving list. Quarterback Matthew Stafford looked for Nacua early and often, and the fifth-round draft pick produced three 100-yard receiving efforts in his first four games.

Nacuaā€™s statistical performances cooled upon Kuppā€™s return, but with 69 catches he ranks ninth in the NFL. His 987 yards rank sixth.

Kupp did not practice Wednesday because of an ankle injury suffered during Sundayā€™s 17-16 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, a win that ended a three-game losing streak and improved the Ramsā€™ record to 4-6. If Kupp does not play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, Nacua could again become the undisputed go-to receiver.

The question is how long can the 6-foot-2, 205-pound Nacua endure his physical playing style?

This week he was nursing a shoulder issue, the latest byproduct of his physical play.

ā€œI love playing the game that way,ā€ he said. ā€œThatā€™s how I was raised. But it definitely has its pros and cons.ā€

Nacua, as with many rookies, already has completed more than the equivalent of a college season. The Rams played three preseason games and have played 10 regular-season games. They will play at least seven more, with the playoffs also still a possibility.

Collisions in the NFL are ā€œway differentā€ than in college, said Nacua, who played at Washington and Brigham Young.

ā€œJust the consistency of them,ā€ Nacua said. ā€œI definitely wasnā€™t blocking defensive ends in college. As much as I think I was a physical player, thereā€™s no chance they were asking me to block the Nick Bosas of the world and stuff like that.

    ā€œItā€™s definitely been a little different.ā€

Nacua, 22, has embraced the role, and the physical presence he brings to the offense is ā€œa tremendous asset and value,ā€ coach Sean McVay said. But it also presents a challenge: How does he not curb Nacuaā€™s style while being cognizant of keeping him physically sound for the entire season?

ā€œI donā€™t have the answer quite yet,ā€ McVay said. ā€œYou want to continue to allow his greatest traits to come to life, but be smart about how thatā€™s reflected. Now, heā€™s delivering a lot of punishment himself, but that takes a toll on you.

ā€œIā€™ve been really impressed with his ability to be a pro about getting his body turned over week in and week out.ā€

Nacua ā€œloves having the ball in his handsā€ and scoring touchdowns, and also ā€œloves the physical contact aspect,ā€ offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said. When LaFleur watches replays of the games, he is struck by the close-ups of Nacua.

ā€œHis face looks like heā€™s in a certain zone that not a lot of people can get into,ā€ LaFleur said.

Last Sunday, the cameras found Nacua after he caught a second-quarter touchdown pass, and after using second effort on a jet sweep to pick up a first down during the game-winning drive.

For a rookie, Nacua is ā€œabout as comfortable as Iā€™ve ever seen somebody,ā€ Stafford said. The 15th-year pro does not want Nacua to change his physical play and tone-setting ways.

ā€œAs he gets more and more comfortable in the game, heā€™ll find his opportunities to try to stay up on his feet,ā€ Stafford said, adding, ā€œIā€™m sure his body feels not great on certain days, but heā€™s been able to show up for us, and thatā€™s huge.ā€

There was no bigger steal in the NFL draft this year than Puka Nacua. As a fifth-round pick, heā€™s already turned in an 1,100-yard season and still has four games remaining, putting him in striking distance of the single-season rookie receiving record.

The Rams selected him with the third of their three fifth-round picks, the final selection in Round 5 at No. 177 overall. Though they clearly liked Nacua more than the other 31 teams, they very easily couldā€™ve missed out on the rookie sensation.

Needless to say, Sean McVay wouldnā€™t have been a very happy camper if that happened. He joked on Friday that he mightā€™ve choked out Les Snead if the Rams didnā€™t draft Nacua when they had.

ā€œWhen it was getting down to it, I mightā€™ve choked Les out if we had missed out on Puka when we were waiting so long to be able to take him,ā€ McVay said with a smile. ā€œBut heā€™s a stud and weā€™re really grateful to have him.ā€

Nacua was injured often in college, which McVay admits was ā€œmaybe a reason he was available when he wasā€ in the fifth round. Had Nacua put together a healthy career in college, he mightā€™ve gone much sooner because there was a lot to like about his game.

ā€œThe toughness, the aggressive hands, just the competitor,ā€ McVay said. ā€œAnd you could see with a lot of the different things he was asked to do, the football acumen and IQ, you had to guess was really high before you even talked to him based on the versatility of his game.ā€

Actually if you list all the great Rams receivers from 1970s on, only 1 was a 1st rounder (Holt). Ellard and Bruce were 2nd rounders, as was Anderson. Harold Jackson was a 12th rounder.

In the deeper past, a couple of great Rams WRs were 1st rounders: Hirsch and Snow.

I think if teams were able to do a redraft today, many would pick Nacua in the 1st or 2nd round. If they’re receiver-needy, it’s a 1st.

He does need to work on his hands, especially when it comes to “easier” catches. But given his obvious intangibles, he’ll work like a madman to get better and better each year. He’s basically the Rams’ missing 1st rounder in 2023.

Now, they just need to do a better job with their actual early round picks to go with those late round gems. If they can put all of that together in the 2024 draft, and hit on a coupla free agent pickups, they’re back in the hunt.

    4. Puka Nacua, WR, Los Angeles Rams

If the next two guys behind you in reception totals are Travis Kelce (80) and Davante Adams (76), you’re having a top-tier season. Nacua is on track to break the NFL’s single-season record for catches by a rookie (Jaylen Waddle with 104 in 2021).

Nacua is ranked ninth in the NFL in yards after the catch (437), too. If he keeps up his current volume, he could threaten the greatest statistical rookie seasons ever at the position.

Nacua is only the 15th non-kicker drafted specifically in the fifth round to make the Pro Bowl as a rookie and just the eighth since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970.
