I watched Donald, in fact focused on his play and I was not that impressed. Is this guy everyone is raving about in camp?
If so, when is it going to translate to games?Grits

Because what you watched isn’t Donald. What you watched was Donald taking Brockers role in the defense with Brockers out. Donald isn’t Brockers, he wasn’t drafted to play that role, and he wasn’t going to look good doing it.
I thought with Donald last night they just sent him out there to take some hard reps as part of a learning curve.
When they use him the way he was drafted to be used, we will have more to judge him by.
Basically it was like asking Rod Perry to play MLB. Rod Perry not being able to play MLB doesn’t mean he can’t play what he is supposed to play.
August 17, 2014 at 12:13 pm #4207PA RamParticipantI think last week in the Saints game he flashed here and there. He is quick. But that alone won’t save him. He has work on technique, figure some things out, maybe get stronger. I think Donald CAN be really good–but I’m not sure he’s going to be part of any Fearsome Foursome II this year. He will play and the Rams will pick their spots with him. And by next year with another camp under his belt I think he may show more.
But there’s no doubt the Packers ate him for lunch this week.

While I agree with that–he has to be able to shed single blocks. On that Rodgers scramble the lineman was glued to him. But I agree that he will benefit in how they use him and if the intent was to just let him work hard this week it was a success. But on the other hand, he was sort of set up for failure. Hopefully it benefits him when they set him up for success. I’m not worried about him. I think he just needs time.

I’m not sure anyone is trying to judge anyone with any accuracy. I think it’s just a response to what we’ve seen so far–in that very limited sample. I’m excited about Donald. Loved the pick. Players are always being judged, every game, every play. Fans will have opinions but that’s all they are. It’s no big deal.

August 17, 2014 at 8:23 pm #4262Eternal RamnationParticipantDonald is already incredibly strong. He’s a rotational interior pass rusher from what Fisher said. The Pack’s OL focused on him. Running no huddle in the preseason seems like game planning to me.I can see how they would want to practice but they knew the Rams wouldn’t blitz,I even heard it was agreed on before hand.I think there is method to this madness although I was still too disgusted to see it yesterday.
August 17, 2014 at 8:59 pm #4273MackeyserModeratorFirstly, let’s all take it down a notch. We’re all just talking football.
Secondly, it’s preseason. So, it’s almost impossible for the fan to really glean much about what’s going on without really looking at individual matchups since we know the teams aren’t scheming.
Lastly, Donald won’t be used much as a rookie on running downs at the point or in the NT position. More like never. He’ll be rotating on pass downs at the 3 tech. So, trying to evaluate Donald out of position and extrapolating isn’t likely to yield much useful information.
The good news is that if the Rams DL gets back on track, we’ll have ourselves a Rookie DPOY in Aaron Donald and he’ll get plenty of attention when we’re in the playoffs…

Well, but, we’ve been on this particular board

and moved on to another board ?I mean, geez. This place is so old-newz.

Nowhere did I say anything like that. And you know it.
I simply made an observation that posters watch one game and make claims like “Aaron Donald has been over hyped”. This being after what was reported to be a strong first game. And this is with not any consideration of what he was being asked to do or what the game plan was. Happens every year and with many players.
FYI: I usually don’t read what you write.

C’mon guys let’s keep it just a bit more civil. Fair enough? One mod (Mack) has already said something.

At this point, we have 2 different views of how to weigh the pre-season. That’s an eternal debate.
